The Deep A Companion

978-1-80079-257-9 pb

978-1-80079-259-3 epub

Oxford, 2023

Price:

What’s in the Deep?

This companion explores the myths and legends of merfolk and sea monsters to navigate our transcultural pasts and environmental presents and explain our endless fascination with the sea . More than any other time in human history, our relationship to the oceans and the creatures of the Deep has come into focus, not just as an environment to be explored, exploited and, more recently, poisoned, but as a source of both our deepest anxieties and possible futures . In 31 original essays by experts in their respective fields, the Deep is brought to life, from representations of mythological sea creatures to present-day visions of the blue environment As our place in the world and our effects upon it become increasingly contentious, The Deep offers ways in which we might re-experience and realign ourselves to the watery world that covers the majority of the earth’s surface and become part of a shared, more ecological, future

This collection responds to the unusual and disturbing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic . The volume surveys the immediate effects of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in documentary film cultures as well as providing a space for unpacking the recent past and future of documentary in the context of the pandemic’s possible effects It is published as part of Peter Lang’s Documentary Film Cultures series and reflects the value of documentary as an enduring and influential channel of media discourse and community of practice . Media producers have been forced to both interrogate their chosen professions and innovate with limited resources Already, we are seeing new distribution and production methods emerge to highlight the importance of media-makers as essential workers, as they are uniquely equipped with the ability to represent the various dialogues undertaken to respond to the cultural, social, economic and political challenges the pandemic has foisted on global society

In order to reach sustainable supply chains, the Ecologically Dominant Logic calls for improvement in measurements With regard to climate change, this is the task of corporate carbon accounting and footprinting . This book contributes to these topics by proposing a double-entry based bookkeeping approach for carbon accounting, that enables continuous reporting along the supply chain, supports both product and corporate carbon footprinting and is compliant with the established carbon accounting standards . Furthermore, for estimating missing carbon footprints, a regression-based estimation approach is proposed and tested, which needs only publicly available data as input and facilitates the estimation at a decent level of quality without knowledge about the internal processes of a company

Economy-Wide Policy Modeling of the Food-Energy-Water Nexus Identifying Synergies and Tradeoffs on Food, Energy, and Water Security in Malawi

Franziska Schünemann

978-3-6317-5618-8 hb

978-3-6317-6111-3 epub

Berlin, 2018 . 224 pp ., 4 fig col ., 4 fig . b/w, 27 tables

Food, energy, and water are intrinsically connected through economic and ecological linkages and dependent on limited resources that are particularly threatened in developing countries by climate change, economic and population growth A nexus perspective that simultaneously encompasses food, energy, and water has thus become crucial to avoid inefficient resource use This volume contributes to the research on the food-energy-water nexus by first developing three integrated modeling frameworks for ex-ante policy simulation and then analyzing four policies in Malawi – biofuels production, irrigation expansion, improved cookstoves and agroforestry The analyses show that the design of policies matters and that the inclusion of smallholders generally maximizes synergies between food, energy and water security Integrated modeling frameworks are vital for analyses of policies that simultaneously affect the economic, social, and environmental spheres to quantify relevant tradeoffs

The COVID-19 affects both people’s health and socio-economic structures around the world . Measures were adopted to contain the pandemic suppressed economic activity, leading to stagnation and contraction . Such contractions impacted on employment; losing jobs and income levels turned the contractions into severe fiscal and economic crisis

The study examines the effects of the pandemic on socio-economic structures and the effectiveness of public policies . It reveals that some countries successfully managed the pandemic while others lead to deepen its negative effects Social and economic policies that were decisive in successes and failures are examined through comparative descriptive analyses within a framework in each chapter . This study is hoped to serve as a guide for policy-makers in such circumstances .

Tourism is one of the most sensitive industries across risks and crises based on economic, social, and political developments . In recent years, the challenges such as terrorism, epidemics, and economic blockades based on political tension between countries not only cause increased risks and threats on destinations but also cause decreased touristic mobility A global pandemic, depressed economy, political uncertainties, and social problems can also interrupt the touristic movement . This book focuses on global risks and crises management in the tourism industry with a proactive approach It is aimed to create an essential source/reference about preparation to emergencies, steps to be taken to eliminate uncertainties and risks, and effective risk and crisis management practices, and to guide managers and industry practitioners .

Innovation Ecosystems in the New Economic Era Digital Revolution and Ecological Transition

Bruxelles, 2023 . 384 pp ., 30 fig b/w, 14 tables .

Price: CHF 63 00 / €D 54 95 / €A 56 10 / € 51 00 / £ 42 00 / US $ 61 95

Digital technologies are revolutionizing global economy, modes of production and consumption, at individual and collective levels . Nevertheless, involved socio-economic models can be often incompatible with major challenges faced by humanity, notably environmental crisis and climate change that warn about the end of a linear growth model which aimed at “produce, consume and throw away”, in order to move towards an economic development that tends to limit the waste of resources and environmental impact For that purpose, innovation should be responsible and at the service of a more sustainable development

This apparent contradiction between digital production forces and bio-climatic issues can be questioned by the emergence of innovation ecosystems . At their center, new technologies constitute drivers for solving problems of degradation of nature, food, and survival of species In this perspective, the questions addressed in this book focus on the beneficial interactions between digital technologies and environmental challenges .

Decolonizing Environmental Education for Different Contexts and Nations

978-1-4331-9174-9 pb .

978-1-4331-9184-8 epub

New York, 2022

As Dominant Western Worldviews (DWWs) proliferate through ongoing structures of globalization, neoliberalism, extractive capitalism, and colonialism, they inevitably marginalize those deemed as ‘Other’ (Indigenous, Black, Minority Ethnic, non-Western communities and non-human ‘Others’, including animals, plants, technologies, and energies) Environmental Education (EE) is well-positioned to trouble and minimize the harmful human impacts on social and ecological systems, yet the field is susceptible to how DWWs constrain and discipline what counts as viable knowledge, with a consequence of this being the loss of situated knowledges . To understand the relationships between DWW and situated knowledges and to thread an assemblage of ontological views that exist in unique contexts and nations, authors in this book take up decolonizing methodologies that expand across theories of Indigenous Knowledges (IK), Traditional Ecological Knowledges (TEK), two-eyed seeing, hybridity, and posthumanism As EE opens to emplaced and situated socio-cultural and material stories, it opens to opportunities to attend more meaningfully to planetary social and ecological crisis narratives through contingent, contextualised, and relevant actions .

The Art of Research When Nature Matters

What changes in education, when it is not just humans whose teaching is sought and acknowledged? And how can educational research be accountable to the voices and agency of such more-than-human teachers, interlocutors, and kin? These have become pressing questions in an era of soaring interest in forest and nature schools, place- and land-based education . Ecoportraiture offers theoretical and practical guidance into an emerging methodology with deep roots in the anti-racist, emancipatory research tradition of portraiture initiated by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot and Jessica Hoffman Davis . Bracketed by the editors’ wide-ranging introductory essay and a closing critical conversation, five inspiring chapters take readers deep into the thinking and action that characterize ecoportraiture research Ideal for researchers at all levels who want to explore more deeply how human learning is shaped and informed by the more-than-human, this book also invites a wider audience into the artful practice of close listening to the many voices of the natural world Ecoportraiture seeks to evoke and to guide journeys of knowing that are both profoundly ecological and profoundly personal This is an open-ended and transformative methodology: one that is less about finding answers than about asking better questions—about learning to participate more deeply, as student, teacher, parent, community member, and/or co-researcher, in the conversations of the Earth

The last decades have demonstrated growing calls for innovations associated with science teaching methods In the light of science education reforms, teaching methods have focused on scientific inquiry, discovery, and other constructivist approaches Research on innovations in science education raises discussion about the application of new technology, a need to infuse arts and social emotional learning content into science education, and use of innovative models to improve critical thinking skills and enhance teachers’ self-efficacy However, there is a lack of research on innovative work behavior of science teachers’ personal, cognitive, and environmental factors .

The researchers in this book address to the phenomenon of innovative work behavior and aim to reveal the associations between the science teachers’ innovative work behavior and personal, cognitive, and environmental factors

Community Values and Legality under Challenge The Example of International Climate Change Law

Climate change requires fundamental reconsiderations of the values our political and legal systems are to protect . At the same time, international law seems weakened after years of anti-multilateralism and pushbacks against a principled, value-driven international order Against this backdrop, this book is the first to give a comprehensive and systematic analysis of values in international climate change law and the interplay between value-laden norms and legal form . It shows how an increasing focus on values in the climate change regime has facilitated a decline of legal form in comparison to the 1990s Teasing out the tensions and trade-offs between a value focus and legal form, the book advances broader insights on the role of community values in public international law .

The World Economic Forum prepared a manifesto-like statement and opened the issue of the great reset to the discussion The great reset lays out the main idea of rebuilding the world economy and redesigning capitalism in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic . The idea is emerging that the biggest crisis after the great depression in 1929 is currently being experienced due to Covid-19 and that Covid-19 will have very serious and long-term effects on economic growth, public debt, employment and human welfare According to the fathers of the great reset, for the world to recover after Covid-19, radical changes should be made in many areas from education to social contracts and working conditions, countries should act together, and all industries should be transformed per new conditions and ways of working .

This book presents a new method for measuring the effectivity of national and international environmental law It took four years of research and experimentation to develop a way to construct evidence-based legal indicators . The existing environmental indicators evaluate only statistical, scientific or economic data . With legal indicators, governments, parliaments and other public and private actors, including environmental NGOs, will be able to assess accurately and concretely, on a scientific basis, what the gaps, progress and setbacks in the implementation of international conventions and national laws are . The legal indicators will also serve as innovative tools for decision-making, in particular to carry out legislative reforms in full knowledge of the facts and not blindly, as well as to avoid regressions in environmental law .

The mathematical method used makes it possible, through a questi onnaire addressing all the legal and institutional stages of the application of legal texts, to provide data highlighting both the points to be improved and the strengths of the application of the law .

This essay is an update of a first book published in 2018 by the Institut de la Francophonie pour le développement durable It is the result of a partnership between the International Centre for Comparative Environmental Law and the Normandy Chair for Peace .

In 2014, when Lucy Sargisson was promoted to professor in the School of Politics and International Relations, at the University of Nottingham, she became the first and, so far, only, professor of utopian studies . This choice symbolized the centrality of utopianism to her life, thought, and educational practice . In three books, each in their own way groundbreaking, a fourth book co-authored by one of us, and in important articles, her work falls into four primary areas: political theory, feminism, environmentalism, and intentional communities, with much of her work intersecting two, three, or even all four . And in all her work, she brings the lens of utopianism to bear on the subject and, in doing so, illuminates both utopianism and the subject at hand The volume honors Sargisson’s contributions to the field of utopian studies, with contributions by Ibtisam Ahmed, Raffaella Baccolini, David M . Bell, Suryamayi Clarence-Smith, Chris Coates, Elena Colombo, Davina Cooper, Rhiannon Firth, Ruth Levitas, Sarah Lohmann, Almudena Machado-Jiménez, Dunja M Mohr, Tom Moylan, Robyn Muir, José Reis, Lyman Tower Sargent, Lucy Sargisson, Simon Spiegel, Maria Varsam, and Laura Winter .

This book, Nature Walks: “Peripatetic Tradition in Non-fiction Travel Writing of Robert Macfarlane” examines pedestrianism in the long history of British travel writing and examines the consequences that foot mobility has for the walking self and for the meaning-making of the surrounding world This book also discovers how the books by Robert Macfarlane, a widely read British author, on the one hand, uphold some of the long-established tenets of the travel genre, and, on the other hand, demonstrate an openness to departure, renewal, and the reconfiguration of discursive practices . Nature Walks offers a profound examination of the ways by which literary language may respond to our present environmental challenges .

Cli-Fi A Companion

Price: CHF 41 00 / €D 34 10 / €A 35 70 / € 32 45 / £ 25 00 / US $ 39 85

What is Cli-Fi?

Climate change fiction is a new literary phenomenon that emerged at the turn of the twenty-first century in response to what may be society’s greatest challenge

Climate change is already part responsible for extreme weather events, flooding, desertification and sea level rise, leading to famine, the spread of disease, and population displacement Cli-fi novels and films are typically set in the future, telling of disaster and its effect on humans, or they depict the present, beset by dilemmas, conflicts or conspiracies, and pointing to grave consequences . At their heart are ethical and political questions: will humankind rise to the challenge of acting collectively, in the interest of the future? What sacrifices will be necessary, and is a green dictatorship our only hope for survival as a species?

Each chapter in this volume offers a way of reading a particular literary text or film, drawing attention to themes, formal features, reception, contribution to public debate, and issues for class discussion Popular novels and films (Kim Stanley Robinson’s Science in the Capitol trilogy, Michael Crichton’s State of Fear, Ian McEwan’s Solar, and The Day after Tomorrow) are examined alongside lesser known writing (for instance J . G . Ballard’s «proto-climate change» novel The Drowned World and Antti Tuomainen’s Finnish thriller, The Healer), and films not generally thought of as being about climate change (Frozen and Take Shelter)

The book, which includes an introduction tracing the emergence and influence of cli-fi, is directed towards general readers and film enthusiasts as well as teachers and students Written in an accessible style, it fills the gap between academic studies and online blogs, offering a comprehensive look at this timely new genre

It is now more than a quarter of a century since the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published their first comprehensive report on the dangers posed by anthropogenic global warming Over the last twenty-five years the weight of evidence about the causes and consequences of climate change has become compelling . The solutions are fairly simple—we must switch to more sustainable and efficient forms of energy production And yet they remain elusive—globally we produce significantly more greenhouse gases now than we did back in 1990 The sad truth is that this inaction has made climate change inevitable—the only question that remains is whether we can prevent it spiraling out of control . How do we explain this colossal global failure? The problem is political rather than scientific: we know the risks and we know how to address them, but we lack the political will to do so . The media are pivotal in this equation: they have the power to set the public and the political agenda . Climate Change and the Media, Volume 2 gathers contributions from a range of international scholars to explore the media’s role in our understanding of the problem and our willingness to take action . Combined, these chapters explain how and why media coverage has, to date, fallen short in communicating both the science and the politics of climate change They also offer guidance about how the media might shift from being the problem to becoming part of the solution

Media and Transnational Climate Justice captures the intriguing nexus of globalization, crisis, justice, activism and news communication, at a time when radical measures are increasingly demanded to address one of the most pressing global issues: climate change . Anna Roosvall and Matthew Tegelberg take a unique approach to climate justice by focusing on transnational rather than international aspects, thereby contributing to the development of theories of justice for a global age, as well as in relation to media studies . The book specifically explores the roles, situations and activism of indigenous peoples who do not have full representation at UN climate summits despite being among those most exposed to injustices pertaining to climate change, as well as to injustices relating to politics and media coverage This book thus scrutinizes political and ideological dimensions of the global phenomenon of climate change through interviews and observations with indigenous activists at UN climate summits, in combination with extensive empirical research conducted on legacy and social media coverage of climate change and indigenous peoples . The authors conclude by discussing transnational solidarity and suggest a solidarian mode of communication as a response to both the global crisis of climate change and the broader issues of injustice faced by indigenous peoples regarding redistribution, recognition and political representation .

Warren Buffett once opined that "only when the tide rolls out do you discover who’s been swimming naked ." In a similar vein, American Sport in the Shadow of a Pandemic focuses on how communication practices, structures, and principles change when a key locus—sport—has much of its cultural and political-economic power disrupted How intertwined is the economic viability of an American collegiate institution to the communicative enactment of the regular staging of collegiate sports? What proportion of a sports media contract is for the competition itself, as opposed to the documentation of fans being "fanatic" as they witness contests live and in-person? Who and what is deemed most disposable, and how do such decisions play out for athletes of different genders, races, and abilities? Questions such as these form the core foci of this volume . As many have observed, out of crisis comes opportunity. In this instance, this volume provides an opportunity for leading scholars of communication and sport to consider which principles should be rethought or reconceptualized based on the effects of the pandemic on our culture, politics, and economy.

Urban Communication Reader IV Cities as Communicative Change Agents

New York, 2021 XVI, 338 pp , 12 b/w ill , 7 tables

Today, the world is facing climate change, wealth inequality, housing crises, food shortages, mass migration, and now a global health pandemic . Cities are at the heart of both these problems and their solutions Urban communication scholars are wellpoised to examine the change initiatives that are both caused and inspired by such complex problems This volume provides a collection of urban communication research focused on how examining change through the lens of communication provides unique processual understandings of cities as dynamic sites formed through the interplay between concrete cases and conceptual ideas The first section, Change through Institutional Intervention, addresses how diverse societal institutions— including policy, regulation, planning, and voluntary arts—interplay with changes in our urban communities The second section, Change in Place and through Space, explores various ways in which spaces and places are able to transform through communicative practice, specifically focusing on how space and place provide unique frames for communicating change and influencing interaction in cities . The third section, Change through Participation and Engagement, collectively draws attention to the ways that public participation and engagement are utilized in cities in ways that enhance the communication both within and about them, focusing specifically on how this happens globally in teaching and learning environments, community planning partnerships, industrial site redevelopment projects, and approaches to food sovereignty in urban agricultural initiatives

In recent decades, green chemistry dominated the imagination of sustainability scholars all over the world and was embraced by leading global universities and companies . This new concept is supposed to address the environmental crisis by making chemistry safer and less polluting

And yet, under this seemingly straightforward success story hides a tangled and ambiguous reality: alternative frameworks, shoddy greenness criteria, and power struggles .

This book retraces the history of the green chemistry concept and critically assesses its claims and dominant narratives about it It is an indispensable guide for all those interested in the challenges of sustainability, whether they have background in chemistry or not . Its underlying question is: is green chemistry really that green?

Affect, Ecofeminism, and Intersectional Struggles in Latin America A Tribute to Berta Cáceres

Affect, Ecofeminism, and Intersectional Struggles in Latin America: A Tribute to Berta Cáceres examines the power of affect in structuring decolonizing modes of resistance performed by social movements such as COPINH (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras) Despite a harsh legacy of colonialism, indigenous communities continue suffering from territorial displacements, dispossession, and human rights abuses due to extractivist projects that are violently destroying their land and, therefore, the environment

In particular, the Lenca communities in Honduras have been negatively affected by Western ideas of "progress" and "development" that have historically eliminated ancestral knowledges and indigenous ecological cosmologies while reinforcing Eurocentrism Nevertheless, by reflecting on and articulating strategies for resisting neoliberalism, COPINH and its cofounder Berta Cáceres’ commitment to environmental activism, ecofeminism, and intersectional struggles has contributed affectively and effectively to the production of democratic encounters in pursuit of social justice In homage to Berta, who was brutally assassinated for her activism in 2016, this book takes the reader on an affective journey departing from the violent affects experienced by the Lencas due to colonial disruption, contemporary industrialization, and criminalization, towards COPINH’s political and social intervention fueled by outrage, resistance, transnational solidarity, care, mourning, and hope In this way, subaltern actors nurture the power to—in line with Brian Massumi’s interpretation of affect—transform necropolitics into natality with the aim of creating a fairer and better world .

The volume is an ideal contribution to environmental studies, cultural studies, and Latin American studies courses focused on social movements, activism, ecofeminism, and postcolonialism .

Time for a European federation

How Europe could remain relevant in the century of globalization, climate change and the fourth industrial revolution

In the third decade of the 21st century, Europe is facing several serious challenges to its prosperity and freedom Those include economic, financial and productive decline compared to the rest of the world, demographic stagnation, the effects of climate change, energy dependence from other continents and exclusion from technological innovations .

This book proposes the creation of a federal European state that would replace and succeed the EU, its member states and other willing European countries This is the only way for Europe to successfully address all those challenges and stay at centre stage in world affairs, in the century of globalization, climate change and the fourth industrial revolution But addressing Europe’s existential challenges is not the only reason to move in that direction A federal Europe would also become a major, self-sufficient geopolitical power, as strong as orstronger than the USA, Russia or China . It would be a model for other regional federations around the planet

The book is not restricted to the analysis of why we need a federal European state but further suggests substantial policies for many different sectors: economy, banking, foreign affairs, defence, education, health, social security, immigration, human rights, agriculture, fourth industrial revolution, circular economy and climate – to name some of them At the end, it presents a rough budget estimation to show that such a federation would not only be desirable but also be feasible .

Irresponsible Citizenship

The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the serious crisis of political authorities that liberal societies are currently experiencing . Indeed, a significant number of individuals living in these societies did not hesitate to defy the sanitary rules enacted by their government which has made it difficult for them to stop the virus from spreading What can explain such a situation? This is what this book is discussing . Whether it is the growing popularity of conspiracy theories, the distrust towards governments or cultural and religious beliefs that take precedence over the respect of governments’ directives, all these factors that have led so many individuals to act in an irresponsible way during the pandemic find their roots in the liberal tradition as it originated in the 18th century and in its more recent development which has had the effect of decentralizing the individual from his collective responsibilities in favor of an almost unlimited enjoyment of his individual freedom This health crisis has revealed the urgency for liberal societies to establish a better balance between collective interest and individual freedom through responsible citizenship capable of protecting its citizens against the adoption of draconian measures when they will be struck again by upcoming pandemics that appear to be unfortunately inevitable

This book introduces an innovative theoretical framework to identify how different systems of government shape climate policymaking arrangements at the local level It highlights how resource interdependencies and power relationships involving municipalities, higher tiers of government and other local actors shape urban governance in two case study cities: Newcastle upon Tyne, in England, and Gelsenkirchen, in Germany By applying the framework to policymaking in three sectors (climate change strategy, planning and each council’s own corporate activities), the study shows how these relationships shape policy styles, objectives and outcomes at the local level . The book also reveals how urban policymaking arrangements in both Germany and England are evolving, as municipal governments seek to increase their capacity to address challenging policy problems whilst facing resource constraints . This book was the runner-up in the 2017 Early Career Researcher Prize in German Studies, a collaboration between the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham and Peter Lang

Changing the Paradigm of Energy Geopolitics Security, Resources and Pathways in Light of Global Challenges

This book offers an overarching view of the underlying challenges that the energy transitions pose to interstate energy relations Geopolitics of energy currently epitomizes one of the principal sources for geopolitical vicissitudes affecting global energy landscapes The ever-changing global energy architecture, global decarbonization plans and low-carbon technology developments are having deep geopolitical consequences The extensive and rapid adjustment towards lowcarbon energy is unsettling the conventional transnational energy structures, affecting economies and altering energy interstate relations The geopolitics of the energy transitions is a field in the making, hence the existent academic literature is scarce and limited in scope Current debates on decarbonization tend to mimic the geopolitics of oil and gas when discussing the stakeholders involved in the energy transitions . Besides, energy transitions tend to be studied at the national level overlooking the interactions at regional and global scales . Most research on the geopolitics of the energy transitions to date has mainly focused on the path to achieve the transitions to low carbon energy systems, and less on the global dynamics and the impacts of those transitions to inter-state relations and energy security The fundamental question that needs dwelling is: How, and to what extent, will the multiple dimensions of the ongoing energy transitions affect existing fundamental geopolitical issues, and what new dynamics may result from the decarbonization process of the planet? The reasons to organize this publication are many, but among them stand one, which is functioning as the driving force behind this project: to contribute to a broader discussion on the ways in which energy transitions and geopolitics intersect

The history of urbanization was inseparably connected with the exploitation of the environment and the subjugation of rivers Today we experience the effects of this expansion in the form of escalating water problems The book outlines the processes of transformation of anthropogenic, natural and waterborne structures in urban environment, which were presented in three historical phases: the period of Respect, Conquest and Return River-friendly cities require integrated water management in entire catchments from the source to the recipient The key to the success of the Return strategy is the recovery of space for greenery and water, responsible spatial planning, circular economy and rainwater management as well as continuous raising of awareness of the whole society

Welche Kräfte wirken in ihm?

Small Islands, Big Issues

Pacific Perspectives on the Ecosystem of Knowledge

Price: CHF 116 .00 / €D 99 .95 / €A 101 .90 / € 92 .60 / £ 75 .00 / US $ 112 .95

This work, an initiative of the University of French Polynesia, Tahiti, showcases research collaboration between small island universities in the Pacific .

It addresses a number of «big issues» for Oceania which are also big issues for the world, concerning the biosphere and human society, sustainable development and well-being The authors seek to create an ecosystem of knowledge through a dialogue, in English and French, between the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities .

The work also brings into perspective academic and traditional knowledge, with a view to enhancing cultural and agricultural practices and the development of public policy.

Climate change, environmental degradation and food security are key questions for survival How can the preservation of cultural heritage, the transmission of native languages and the integration of traditional knowledge into formal education contribute to a harmonious future? How is the phenomenon of violence relevant to an understanding of history, interpersonal relations and social inclusiveness, including for women in the political sphere?

The Tongan-Fijian writer Epeli Hau’ofa described Oceania imaginatively as a «Sea of Islands» . This volume sees Pacific islands as being interconnected in ways beyond imagining, in which nowhere is remote, where the peripheral has become a decentred centre

«This work highlights the need for a holistic approach to the confounding issues confronting the region, confronting our age . In reminding us of the many vulnerabilities and vitalities of Oceanian communities and island worlds, it shows the potential for dialogue between disciplines and consilience between academic scholarship and local community understandings . The collection’s clarion call for a new ‘ecosystem of knowledge’ is utterly timely.»

—Alexander Mawyer, Director, Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawai‘i

«This work breaks the barriers imposed by language and distinctive intellectual traditions in presenting a wide-ranging selection of current work from the South Pacific in the humanities, social and natural sciences Of particular significance is the fact that Francophone as well as Anglophone scholars are represented . This gathering of minds, a meritorious initiative of the University of French Polynesia, is an invitation to ‘think the Pacific’ in the vein of pioneer Oceanian intellectuals like Epeli Hau’ofa and Jean-Marie Tjibaou »

It is being said that we should all be proud of the way we are confronting the Covid-19 pandemic . Rather than privileging profits and trade, Western societies have made the noble decision to save lives at all costs Indeed, the logic that has prevailed is that accepting any trade-off between saving lives and saving the economy is an unacceptable and monstrous idea, which is why liberal democracies worldwide have chosen to shutter businesses and force people to self-quarantine in their homes as much and for as long as possible A vast majority of citizens and political leaders deemed that acting otherwise would have been nothing else but pure moral bankruptcy.

Is it, however, possible that Western societies have gone the wrong way by embracing this inherently basic and impoverished version of life? The reason why a significant majority of us are unable to see this truth is because of our refusal to accept death and the tragic essence of human life which is the result of the various cultural parameters we have grown accustomed to over the past decades that followed WWII The Covid-19 pandemic has simply been the triggering factor that has allowed these factors to reinforce the full strength they wield on our understanding of life . Defined primarily by a fear of death, the desire to prolong life as much as possible and minimize the hurdles individuals have to face during their existence has created a beast that is, in appearance, reassuring to the fearful creatures we have become .

This beast has asepticized societies that refute the tragic nature of life and are willing to hinder individuals’ freedom and what makes our existence inherently humane However, without realizing it, this Leviathan that now takes the form of a "nanny state" has altered our nature from individuals able and encouraged to enjoy life to people whose only destiny is to simply survive for as long as possible, without any other purpose than to avoid anything that might jeopardize this objective

In this collection, Literacy and Learning in Times of Crisis: Emergent Teaching Through Emergencies, the contributors offer insights from theoretical, historical, and pedagogical lenses and these critical insights emerge out of their academic, scholarly, and personal experiences of teaching during crises . In some cases, authors have taught while battling COVID, and others have done so while addressing and acknowledging school-based violence While some teach the analysis of the discourse of crisis, others critique the missteps of policy-making during calamity. More so, some authors examine the finesse of micro-teaching at emotional levels; others find the means to develop macro-structures of programmatic curriculum Literacy and Learning in Times of Crisis highlights the educational decision making that educators have used to cope with the dilemmas that they and their students have faced at the turn of the millennium . Specifically, contributors to this collection offer a broad range of experiences, expertise, and engagement with pedagogy during emergencies that we currently face but also frame issues of emergencies that will inevitably challenge educators in the future .

In Great Britain, discussions of the Coronavirus pandemic have frequently been intertwined with references to the Second World War Such allusions are to be found in political speeches, journalistic accounts and opinion pieces; they are also replete in the cultural sphere . Bringing together scholars from a range of disciplines, this comprehensive volume seeks to evaluate the uses (and abuses) of this rhetoric . The result is a multifaceted meditation on Britain’s response to the pandemic

Tanzania has been considered a model for development, peace, and stability despite the arrival of refugees from neighboring countries and the potential tensions related to climate change Although it has accessed the rank of middleincome country, Tanzania still faces several challenges, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic . The book aims at analyzing these challenges as well as the country’s successes through a multi-disciplinary approach considering economic perspectives as well as conflict prevention, dialogue integration, climate change adaptation, forests’ protection, and social perspectives – especially relating to women and girls . The current Covid situation has shaken the whole world and raised many questions on how the different regions and countries could adapt and develop resilience strategies in an uncertain and ever-changing context Therefore, the book is not only about Tanzania but also about what we can learn from the research on Tanzania in terms of vulnerabilities and resilience strategies . This book is an outlook of International Development Challenges

This book is co-funded by the European Union in the framework of the project Pilot 4 Research and Dialogue .

Examining social imaginaries is important for exploring how we might live differently. This interdisciplinary book combines ethical, narrative, and media analysis to investigate emerging ideas regarding human-animal interaction and cohabitation in Australia in the twenty-first century The authors appraise the range of conventions, standards, and narratives that have driven Australians’ interactions with animals . They further trace how animal advocates, activist groups, and other influencers are calling for change, together with inspiring everyday Australians to better consider the status and wellbeing of animals in Australia In this work they draw on a wide range of sources: from activist campaigning and well-known cultural narratives to diverse forms of mainstream media production and scientific analysis . They examine the treatment of livestock animals, common understandings of companion animals, the protection of threatened species, the complexity of living alongside native animals, and the possible rewilding of Australian communities and landscapes . The book also addresses the question of what living in more-than-human, multispecies communities might mean and look like in practice In every chapter the authors endeavour to better understand how Australians live alongside animals and imagine how better models for interaction, cohabitation, and communal living with animals might be built .

https://www.peterlang.com/series/anthro

New geological period following the impact of human activities on the Earth system, the Anthropocene is at the same time a concept resulting from the Earth System Sciences and Geology, a political concept on the possible orientations of the human adventure, but also an ideological concept invested to generate social, economic and political changes

In this collection the works raise the question of the future and its preparation in a period marked by uncertainty. The topics covered can be particularly varied, as, for example: stratigraphy of the Anthropocene, planetary boundaries, plastics, biogeochemical cycles... but also education, health, governance and democracy, the organization of contemporary societies and ecological changes, agriculture, urbanism, the stories of the Anthropocene, science fiction, or economic models .

EcoPolis

Series founded by Marc Mormont .

The EcoPolis series is dedicated to the analysis of changes that occur simultaneously in society and the environment when the latter becomes a fundamental concern

For a long time the environment was defined as being external to society, like the world of nature and ecosystems which serves as a material foundation for social life . Thus the aim of environmental policies has been to "preserve", to "protect" or even to "manage" that which was seen as a sort of infrastructure of our societies After several decades of environmental policy, nature and the environment have become objects of government and it is seemingly within the same movement that each society models its environment and shapes itself . This dialectic will be central to the series

Plants and Animals: Interdisciplinary Approaches aims to publish scholarly work that addresses common challenges across the fields of plant and animal studies from interdisciplinary perspectives . The series welcomes monographs and edited collections that focus and reflect upon interactions of plants, animals, and humans in innovative ways . At a time of large-scale anthropogenic species extinction, there is a pressing need to promote scholarship that can help us envision more equitable and harmonious forms of coexistence on the planet . The series therefore encourages submissions explicitly geared to build bridges not only between plant and animal studies, but also leading-edge research on other forms of life or ways of being, including fungi, lichens, algae and other microorganisms, as well as scholarship on fantasy creatures, cryptids, semi-living beings, and even non-living forms of existence The goal is to abolish an artificially compartmentalized view of the world in order to add to the ways of knowing that are beginning to grow through the interconnections between these related fields of study Grounded in the humanities, Plants and Animals welcomes trans-disciplinary perspectives that engage with scholarship in the social sciences and in the natural sciences
