MIRI: Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town (RCMOT) recently organised its first medical mission to Ulu Teru in Tinjar, Baram to provide free health screenings for villagers there.

The mission, from June 22 to 24, saw a team of medical professionals from Miri Hospital and RCMOT members carry out a total of 547 screenings for villagers.

Club president Kenny Kong said the mission was to ease the burden of rural folk who often encounter difficulties in accessing medical services.

“Thus, instead of them coming out of the village and facing various logistics issues and high costs, we took the whole team to them,” he said.

Apart from free health checks, the team also provided other services such as cutting hair, traditional joint therapy and hygiene education for the children, Kong added.

“We are happy with the participation of our team members as they are using their professional skills, vocational skills and passion to serve the community, especially those who are in need.”

HISTORY & OBJECTS OF ROTARY CLUB OF MIRI OIL TOWN

The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul P. Harris called together a meeting of three business acquaintances in downtown Chicago, United States, at Harris's friend Gustave Loehr's office in the Unity Building on Dearborn Street on February 23, 1905.

In addition to Harris and Loehr (a mining engineer and freemason), Silvester Schiele (a coal merchant), and Hiram E. Shorey (a tailor) were the other two who attended this first meeting. The members chose the name Rotary because initially they rotated subsequent weekly club meetings to each other's offices, although within a year, the Chicago club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common practice of a regular meeting place.

The next four Rotary Clubs were organized in cities in the western United States, beginning with San Francisco, then Oakland, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The National Association of Rotary Clubs in America was formed in 1910. On November 3, 1910, a Rotary club began meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the beginning of the organisation's internationality. On 22 February 1911, the first meeting of the Rotary Club Dublin was held in Dublin, Ireland. This was the first club established outside of North America. In April 1912, Rotary chartered the Winnipeg club marking the first establishment of an American-style service club outside the United States. To reflect the addition of a club outside of the United States, the name was changed to the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912.

In August 1912, the Rotary Club of London received its charter from the Association, marking the first acknowledged Rotary club outside North America. It later became The first four Rotarians. Harris known that the Dublin club in Ireland was organized before the London club, but the Dublin club did not receive its charter until after the London club was chartered.

During World War I, Rotary in Britain increased from 9 to 22 clubs, and other early clubs in other nations included those in Cuba in 1916, Philippines in 1919 and India in 1920.

In 1922, the name was changed to Rotary International. By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members

What inspired us to form

Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town?

The saying goes that everything happens with a reason.

RC Miri Oil Town was formed by a group of good hearted citizens who want to serve the community in need.

The idea came on the 2nd day Jan 2017, by Kenny Kong, Wilson Chiam, Dr. Tarek, Amy Wong, Meena Tiong, SP Ling and Tang Si Yang.

The Vision

of RC Miri Oil Town is to establish to be a strong club with good positive culture.

The objective is to focus on Clean Water, Medical and Education as our core Mission.

Long before this day, we had been encouraged to form another club in Miri by many Rotarians within the region justified by the population and the needs in our community.

In just over a month, we were able to engage more than the minimum requirement of 25 members; required by the District to form a new club.

Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town was officially admitted by Rotary International on 19th May 2017. The Charter President of the club is Kenny Kong Suy Choy with seven Board of Directors and eighteen other charter members.

Dear fellow Rotarian, I want to congratulate you on your installation to the office of 2018-19 club president.

Although the details of each position differ from year to year and place to place, your ultimate responsibility is the same as mine. We work to move Rotary forward, doing whatever we can do to make the part of Rotary that we’re responsible for as effective and efficient as it can be. We make sure that we are transparent and accountable while changing the lives of as many people as possible. And we ensure that Rotary provides the best possible experience to its members and continues to grow, all while remaining useful to the world.

It’s only by coming together that we’re able to accomplish so much. Without Barry Rassin active members like you, Rotary wouldn’t President be the organization it is today. As our new 2018-19 vision statement says: Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change —— across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Congratulations again on your appointment as club president. I look forward to having you join me to Be the Inspiration.

I wish to express my sincere thanks for

giving me the honor to write a message in connection with your Club’s Installation event.

This year Rotary International has given us several objectives to fulfill.

One of the key objective is in membership growth.

Rotary’s membership structure is aging. If there is no net membership growth, Rotary will soon stagnate and fade away. Time and effort are needed to recruit Henry Tan members, to provide them with Rotary District Governor information, to assess them, to get 2018-19 them committed, etc. Therefore, I encourage all clubs to have an early start early in their membership drive.

Another area which requires our attention is Youth service. You may want to explore the setting up of an Interact Club. Better still, explore the chartering of a community-based Rotaract Club as Rotary International President Barry Rassin is encouraging us to build more Rotaract Clubs which are community-based.

Rotary International also wants us to increase the scale of our service projects by partnering with other clubs and/or non-Rotary entities. A bigger scale project will help to raise our profile in the community. I noted that in one of your service project you have partnered with Green Summit Development. Do continue to undertake such commendable joint-projects.

In this technological age be open to creative ways of attracting younger members. Make regular use of social media as well as Rotary’s IT platform My Rotary and Club Central. Do make use of the Club Central IT platform to monitor your progress vis-a-vis your objectives and to share and showcase successful projects so as to inspire others.

Rotarians are also part of a big global family. As such I encourage all members in our District to actively connect with each other. Invite Rotarians from other clubs to share their experiences and Rotary information. At the District level we are planning for a Rotary Day to be

celebrated by everyone on the same day. Details will be out shortly. Get ready to invite influential people from your community as well as potential members to come together to celebrate that Rotary Day event. This will let others know more about us and give us a chance to show them the good work we are doing.

Our new Vision Statement calls for unity. As such, I urge all clubs and its members to stay united. By being united among ourselves and by uniting with others, we will be more effective in reaching out to others and to carry out projects and activities that will have a longer lasting impact.

I like to wish President Kenny Kong Suy Choy, his Board of Directors and all your members a successful year – a year that will be filled with exciting events, activities and projects that will inspire others.

It is my honour to be invited as the Guest of Honour and given the opportunity to leave a memorable message in this newsletter.

I would like to congratulate CP Kenny Kong and the team elected as the Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town (RCMOT) 2018-2019 Board of Directors.

RCMOT is celebrating its 1st club anniversary and I am glad that CP Kenny is leading the club for another rotary year. I believe the good foundation set up by CP Kenny and team will lead the club to be vibrant and move forward at the correct pace.

Besides that, I want to express my gratitude to RCMOT for appointing me as the 2018 – 2019 Club Honourary Member and the honour is mine.

The club has organized a few remarkable projects such as Tusan Community Project, setting up ‘’We Love Kids’’ Program, Medical Mission to Ulu Teru Tinjar and clean waters project in a number of longhouses in the last Rotary year. I was briefed that the club is going to continue the medical mission, expand the ‘’We Love Kids’’ Program and also focus on clean water projects. It is indeed wonderful to see a group of professionals doing vocational service to the community and young people starting to join a Rotary Club. Kudos to club under CP Kenny’s leadership and continue the Service Above Self work.

Last but not least, I want to congratulate the organizing committee of this wonderful club anniversary and installation. They have spent their own precious time on organizing this celebration and sharing the joy with the families, friends, sponsors and not to forget our fellow Rotarians that flew in to Miri. Once again, I want to congratulate the outgoing board members, incoming board members and the club anniversary and installation organizing committee.

CLUB OF MIRI OIL TOWN

Dear fellow Rotarians, Through a friend from Brunei I was introduced to Rotary. It was an interesting journey throughout my 2 years 10 months in Rotary as it continued its trajectory as a leading international service organization rooted firmly in the values of ethics and moral practices. Fourteen months after I joined Rotary, I was asked and encouraged by several senior Rotarians to form a new Club with the justification that Miri required more Clubs to serve the community. I’m delighted that we are heading towards the goal of developing a better place and contribute to the greater community. Three months seventeen days later, Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town was chartered with the given objective to focus in 3 main mantras, namely, Medical, Clean Water and Education.

I believe every new club goes through similar experiences, especially on membership retainment where RCMOT is not exceptional. It has been an engaging year during which our community has experienced both highs and lows.

Through it all, I appreciate our commitment to each other; our willingness to tackle with difficult decisions; and our Kenny Kong pledge to work for the common good. I understand that many of us are new to Rotary and that doesn’t always makes Charter President things easy but I am thankful that many of us were able to work very closely together.

RC Miri Oil Town I wish to remember all the moments when we were happily carrying out our projects and enjoying many wonderful fellowships. While there have been some remarkable accomplishments, there still remain a number of exciting initiatives that we want to accomplish with this Club. I am thankful to all our members who put their trust and confidence in me to be the first President of the Club and further still another year to lead. I shall not disappoint your trust by doing the best I can and the best is immeasurable.

I cannot put all my appreciation in this message but at the least I must not forget to thanks those who contributed significantly to RCMOT. For all that you have done to get Rotary to this unprecedented place in our history. Your generosity demonstrates how much you value our vision.

I look forward to this journey with all of you as we continue to work together toward the greater good.

Firstly, thank you PP David Sukhdev for returning to Rotary to guide our young members. Secondly, I salute SAA Keith Howard, a senior citizen, which never failed to get yourself involved in every Club project and activity. Thirdly, I sincerely thank Vice President James Chin for his tremendous effort in raising funds and being an effective mentor to the young members. Fourthly, thanks to Secretary Leslie, despite the fact that you have been very busy, you still put in all your effort for club matters. Fifth, thank you “We Loves Kids” Chairman Joseph Chiu for initiating this wonderful project that will put RCMOT permanently in a good image. Sixth, appreciate PE Choong; Treasurer Peter; International Chair Sean; Yeoh, Meena, Soon Onn, Benson, and Edward Chieng, Andrew Law and others for their hard work and contributions. With the effort of every one of you, RCMOT can only be better. Together, let us put into actions on engaging more positive and committed members from now on and we shall be doing more meaningful projects in the near future and beyond.

CLUB OF MIRI OIL TOWN

Hi, good day fellow Rotarian and friends. My name is Leslie Lau. I am the Club Secretary for Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town (RCMOT) and also the Organizing Chairman for the club 1st anniversary. First and foremost, I would like to thank my club members for entrusting me in organizing the club anniversary and the honour is mine.

On the 19th May 2017, RCMOT was officially admitted and received a lot of blessing from fellow Rotary Clubs. Thank you to our CP Kenny for the effort on assembling the whole team and leading us to Rotary. Being the youngest and also the secretary in the team, I have learnt so much in Rotary knowledge, management skill and other self-development knowledge from senior Rotarians and leaders in companies. I would also like to express my gratitude toward the past BOD for working hard together to charter the club and also the new BOD for taking up the challenge to continue the hard work.

Rotary is a platform for the people within a community to provide a community unique needs. In general, the areas of focus in Rotary are: -Peace and conflict prevention / resolution -Disease prevention and treatment -Water and sanitation -Maternal and child health -Basic education and literacy -Economic and community development In RCMOT, we focus on the disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation and lastly is the basic education and literacy. Members in RCMOT are practicing vocational service which means Rotarian are contributing their expertise to help solve the problems and needs of Miri Community. We have lecturers, engineers, accountants and management people within the club to do run the club and solving the problem arise in the community. It is a wonderful experience to know more expertise in Miri and exchange ideas on creating a better Miri and provides the best for the people. Our past projects included the Medical Mission to Ulu Teru Tinjar, clean water project at several rural areas and We Love Kids program. The medical mission is one of our signature projects which provides medical assistance to the rural areas, clean water projects are the initiative to provide clean water to the villages and We Love Kids program is a long term project that our members use their expertise to develop and train the underprivileged children in the community.

This newsletter provides a lot of information about Rotary and more information on the projects by RCMOT. I encourage more people to take up the responsibility to take care of the

Chartered way back in 2017, the Rotary Club Miri Oil Town has been actively involved in many community service programs since then. Living well up to the Rotary spirit of ‘Service Above Self’, I must congratulate Charter President Kenny, the Board of Directors and members for a wonderful Rotary year of Making a Difference.

RCMOT is moving along the right path by teaming up with other NGOs as well as corporate partners in carrying out its various programs. This not only helps with the funding but also enables other organizations to be aware of Rotary’s activities in general and RCMOT in particular. With better awareness, the club will be able to carry out more community service programs. It will also help the club to attract more members to be Rotarians of the club.

RCMOT must bring in not just members but dedicated and committed Rotarians who believe in the ideals of Rotary. Rotarians who are prepared to serve are the pride of any club, but they must be inspired.

RI President Barry Rassin said we should ‘Be the Inspiration’ for our communities not by planning projects or assigning tasks, but “Begin with inspiration. Begin by awakening the souls in your Rotarians the longing for a better world – and the knowledge, deep and true, that they can create it.”

RI President Barry has said that Rotary is a membership organization. We must take care of our members to be able to serve the community and to succeed in our goals.

And if we want to build a stronger organization, we must let people know who we are, what kind of activities we are involved in, making use of the social media and the public media to get our message across.

I wish all the best and another successful Rotary year to CP President Kenny, the BOD and to all the members of RCMOT. Be the Inspiration to create a better world.

the book The Power of Habit,Charles Duhigg quoted William James who wrote in 1892, “All our life, so far as it has definite form, is but a mass of habits.”

One simple and yet not obvious in many people is the habit of being gracious. Being gracious is about taking full ownership of how we conduct ourselves with decorum and respect.

It is about the habit of being sensitive to the needs and concerns of the people we come into contact with in business and personal life (including in Rotary).

Starting the day with a simple greeting or “Salam” (in our Malaysian context) to the first person we meet in the lift or office, goes a long way to make us feel good with a strong sense of connectivity.

A simple “Thank You” or “Excuse me” is all it takes to show respect and kindness towards others. In Malaysia, we exist harmoniously across diverse cultures accepting differences in the way we conduct our businesses. Generally speaking, we do display such graciousness in our daily life.

Budi Pekerti or the virtues of graciousness is very much embedded in the Malay culture and for a long time it has been a strong Malaysian identity.

Rotarians are business, professional and community leaders that are ingrained with high ethical standards in all vocations, promote international understanding and help build peace and goodwill in the world.

The Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town is 16 months old. With nearly 70% of the charter members still being in the club, I would like to call upon each and every member to take the initiative to exert upon ourselves to make Budi Pekerti a brand we can leverage on. This is because courteousness, good manners and civility have

My fellow rotarians of Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town, as we celebrate our very first anniversary, how indeed do we engage rotary to enable it to change lives? I believe the question leads us to contemplate WHAT IT MEANS, AFTER ALL, TO BE A ROTARIAN. It is a pleasure and an incredible honour to celebrate with all of you this evening. I would like to begin by thanking the organizing committee who made the event possible, this evening. Rotary adds a richness to my life and hope to each of you too, and the lives of more than a million members (1.2 million at last count) that is not measured in dollars, but in the tangible benefit that we deliver to others and the personal joy and fulfilment derived from collaborating with good, honest successful people for the purpose of serving our fellow man.

Saravanan Rotary allows people, who enjoy varying degrees of personal success, to leverage that success and multiply their opportunities for service, thereby multiplying the Krishna joy that comes from putting service above self. One simple virtue which has carried Past President many a Rotary club in the world over the years, that of being always needful and New Club Advisor seeking of meaning. Meaning, we are not just a social club filling our idle time. We seek to be of meaning to our fellow members, and of meaning to the world. As Paul P. Harris had said, “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

And the Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town will seek out its own meaning within the noble and humanist network of the Rotary Clubs of the world. It will work within the context and circumstances of the city and the country and, like the rest, make a genuine difference in the lives of others in its immediate community of Miri. So, I not to take credit for any of contributions that this honourable Rotary club and its many honorable members, have made to the Rotary Club Miri Oil Town continue to serve the community in Miri with splendid projects such as Medical Mission, Tudan Community Projects, The Bomba Run to name a few.

There have been many but rather to thank all of those who have worked to initiate the formation of this club namely Past District Governor Michael Yee, Immediate Past District Governor Datuk Lee Chuen Wan, District Governor Elect Jeff Young, Past President Albert Tan, the members mother club Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan, the Chartered President, Kenny and all the chartered members and all of you today in helping to keep the opportunity of service above self through Rotary possible for others whose pursuit of happiness would be less fulfilled were it not for Rotary.

It will take all of the imagination, dedication, commitment and effort we can muster to recruit more members who can help us live up to that challenge and to provide them the leadership and encouragement to do so. Medical Mission 1.0 Organising Chair Statement

It is always an honour for RCMOT members to serve the community in need.

The Medical Mission is one of the three areas of focus that was laid out during the formation of the Club.

Our objective is to reach out to people who do not have the luxury of convenience to enjoy the required infrastructure and healthcare facilities.

RCMOT successfully carried out its first Medical Mission from 22nd - 24th June 2018 in Ulu Teru Tinjar with a 30 members team, which consisted of: RCMOT members, Medical support staff, family members and friends of Rotary.

The recently concluded 3 days Medical Mission gave all of us a very satisfying experience which we were able to smoothly carry out.

Medical checks carried out were BMI, Glucose level, BP, Medical screening, Dental care, Eye screening.With additional services such as Traditional joint treatment, Kids hygiene awareness and Hair cutting.

There is a saying: “Success requires Teamwork”.

“Seeing through a child’s laugher has made me the person that I am today and I will always have those memories with me.”

The process of how I became a Rotarian is always a funny one, It all started when I first moved to Miri 7 years ago when I met a renowned architect named James. We worked closely together and organized the ‘Tusan Community Project’.

However during discussions he would only use 2 minutes 15 seconds discussing on the project itself and 2 hours 35 minutes trying to convert me into a Rotarian.Because of his consistency I received a phone call from CP Kenny, we didn’t discussed the possibilities of solving local issues through community work but instead he said “Joe, welcome to RCMOT.” Before I could even answer to his question he hung up on me, and that’s how I started my journey with Rotary.

My journey with Rotary Club of Miri Old Town (RCMOT) began last year on January (2017), it has been the most rewarding experience I can ask for.

This experience has helped me to grow and define people around me. There are many less fortunate people around us who has to make it through the day and by no choice of their own. However we can all do something to help make someone else’s life better and I believe that we all have the power to help the less fortunate. Seeing them run towards me and watching their eyes light up as I sit by them, telling them stories, just warms my heart.

Growing up in a family that runs a McDonald’s business was indeed challenging for me. Not only the business itself was tough, I was given different nicknames too at school. I was chubby, short, with a coconut hairstyle. I never approved the process of intimidating or mistreating someone because they’re indifferent. With that in mind thus “We Love Kids” was born.

We Love Kids...

The “We Love Kids” program is an initiative by Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town (RCMOT) that focuses on Character Development and providing the necessities needs for under-privileged or neglected children.

Many of us are blessed with financial advantages and stable income, and most importantly into a family. What if you had none of those? What if you had to suffer with limited resources? But one thing is certain, we can all do something to help make someone else’s life better. I know I have thought about all these things. Thus it is our duty to help those can’t help themselves. Furthermore there are numerous ways that can take very little time and effort to help those who are less fortunate.

Deprivation and rejection dominate the lives of many children, among both poor and wealthy. This group of children often come from struggling families — sometimes they can even be from the middle-class families. This can greatly impact the life of children as every child deserves the same and equal care like anyone else. Ensuring that the kids are taken care and are treated respectfully is crucial.

Our first mission is to provide fun for the children, give them a sense of belonging and give tender loving care to them.

Our second mission is to provide a training centre for the children in the future. This will be a platform for all the children to have the chance they deserve and hoped for to strengthen their early communication and a variety of foundational speaking skills that provides a basis for future literacy and a stage to showcase their hidden talents.

The training centre will provide mentors to individually develop them educationally and socially. The training centre that we will provide includes: a learning centre for them to engage in exciting activities, a living room for them to relax and open up and finally a hostel for them to rest. The training centre will be built alongside where our company resides (IDEASMAKEOVER).

This will significantly change for children in our community that are at-risk for academic challenges and particularly reading failure. We will also work on the development of key skills including, vocabulary development, language comprehension and invest in their personal interests.

We need to bring a greater sense of urgency to this task—built around our collective understanding as these children are our future, if we could create a positive impact on their life; one day they might do the same. cont’...

This is only made possible through the generous funding we have received from RCMOT and the community. In addition the committee is planning a fund-raising event where the money raised will go to “We Love Kids Centre”.

On this coming December of 2018, we will officially launch “We Love Kids”.

And we have already planned events with our team together to bring the children out for a day to have activities, gatherings and as well as building wonderful friendships with one and another.

We hope that you will be able to join us in funding the development of a better environment for the children to live in.

Our hope is that everyone will help generously in assisting RCMOT and “We Love Kids” committee in providing a better environment and a place for the children in their hour of need.

To materialise this “We Love Kids Centre”, the committee requires a huge support in terms of financial aid. The team want to bring the children out for a movie and experience watching movie in the cinema with friends and family and club members. Along this event, the committee is doing fund-raising and all the money raised will go to “We Love Kids Centre”.
