from Julia DonalDson!
Barrington Stoke is all about getting reluctant and struggling kids into books and 2012 sees our fantastic fiction go from strength to strength. We have a raft of great new titles for girls, a staggering array of first class authors – from Julia Donaldson to Chris Wooding, Jeremy Strong to Chris Bradford, Karen McCombie to Gillian Cross – and a new editions programme that ensures our jackets hold their own on mainstream shelves. With a range of finishes including foil stamping, embossing, fore-edge printing and glow-in-the-dark ink, a relaunched

the eagle-eyed will also spot a tiny reading age/interest age legend by the barcode – designed to be so unobtrusive that children need never know it’s there.
In July 2012, we are particularly proud to be publishing Jane Eagland for the first time. Wild Song is a powerful and atmospheric tale, set in Victorian Scotland, inspired by The Tempest. This is followed in September with the launch of the Little Gems, a new series aimed at 5–8s, with two gorgeous stories from Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson. The series continues into 2013 with stories from Geraldine McCaughrean, Kevin Crossley-Holland and Ross Collins already lined up.
Barrington Stoke will be 15 in 2013 and in honour of our big Birthday we have taken the decision to refresh our branding during 2012. That means a well-earned retirement for our original mascot, travelling storyteller Barrington Stoke. In his place we’d like to introduce Snugs the Squirrel, drawn by the fantastically talented Ross Collins.
We are dedicated to producing quality books in all ways: we have introduced stitch-binding for durability and replaced our trademark cream stock with a more consistent two-colour print process. Other new features include a removable ‘dyslexiafriendly’ sticker on jackets as standard and

Buster Books enters into its 11th year in 2012 and has become a recognisable name in children’s publishing, from the recent Sunday Times number one bestseller Where’s the Meerkat?, which took the country by storm over Christmas 2011, to the new Buster fiction list which launched this February with John Barrowman’s successful debut children’s book Hollow Earth; a fantasy novel that follows a pair of gifted twins as they learn how to harness their powers of imagination in time to save the world. 2012 promises to be another bumper year for Buster with the addition of the Monstrous Maud series to the fiction list. Perfect for young readers, the irrepressible Maud is bound to become every girl’s new favourite heroine. The Buster non-fiction list also continues to go from strength to strength with two graphic non-fiction titles – Boys Only and Girls Only – based around the bestselling The Boys’ Book and The Girls’ Book. Reluctant readers will enjoy the fresh comic book style illustrations whilst learning how to survive a vampire attack and canoe whitewater rapids, or how to teach your cat to sit and how to handle sudden stardom. New for the autumn are some brand new children’s fact books, from the brilliantly gory Dreadfully Deadly History to The Worlds Fastest, Spookiest, Smelliest, Strongest Book. Ideal for inquisitive minds, both books sit perfectly alongside our popular educational non-fiction books for children. We’re also adding to our bestselling Miscellanies series with The Girls’ Miscellany and The Boys’ Miscellany, which will entertain a new generation of girls and boys. And to top it all off, those marvellously adventurous meerkats are off on holiday in June in the paperback Where’s the Meerkat? On Holiday, and will be travelling back in time in September! Find them as they walk like Egyptians, swashbuckle with Blackbeard and feast with Henry VIII in Where’s the Meerkat? Journey Through Time.

Chicken House has a terrific s-coop of new books for 2012. Spring begins with the return of the world’s smallest giant in Muncle Trogg and the Flying Donkey by prize-winning Janet Foxley. It’s followed by Patrick Carman’s Floors, in which the wonderful Whippet Hotel joins chocolate factories and boarding schools as a place of mystery and mayhem. Our acclaimed Sophia Bennett is on top form with The Look, a bittersweet story about two sisters dealing with modelling fame – and serious illness. Then, a run of thrillers: Daniel Blythe’s Shadow Runners, a gripping paranormal drama; Freaks by Kieran Larwood, winner of The Times Children’s Fiction Competition and an exciting mystery about a big-hearted gang of Victorian misfits who turn detective; and especially for girls, a romantic, time-travelling adventure – Girl About Time by Kerstin Gier. From Hollywood scriptwriter, William Osborne, comes Hitler’s Angel, a wartime blend of fact and fiction in which two young refugees are sent back to Germany by the British in a plot to bring down Hitler. And for older readers, our answer to the Hunger Games: the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner – now completed by The Death Cure. Summer starts with a light-hearted new series from Cornelia Funke about a group of young girls, beginning with The Summer Gang, followed by The New Girl. Thomas Taylor’s debut, Haunters, is a supernatural thriller based on the idea that ghosts are time-travellers from the future. And there’s magical realism from librarians Mike and Rachel Grinti in Claws, in which a little cat-magic helps a girl find her missing sister. Andrew Peters returns to the world of Ravenwood with his follow-up The Glass Forest. And for teens, Torn by David Massey, a drama set in Afghanistan, told through the eyes of a teenage girl and British army medic. Squeezing in at the end is Kirsty Mckay, back from the Undead with Unfed – with hungrier, funnier and scarier zombies. And the best is last. This winter, discover Cathryn Constable’s The Wolf Princess. Set in the snows of Russia, this is the most exciting, atmospheric, romantic and stylish mystery-adventure you will ever read. This year, Child’s Play is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Our very first title, the iconic ‘There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly’, will be 40 years old itself next year, yet remains perennially popular with both old and new audiences. At the same time, this year sees the publication of some of our most exciting new work to date. Rabbityness is a unique and original debut by Jo Empson. The design of this beautiful picture book is stunning, with unique, eye-catching artwork featuring bold splashes of bright colour, set against jet-black silhouettes. 2012 is the year Egmont Press introduces three new imprints: Jelly Pie, our new humour imprint, launches with I Am Not a Loser by Jim Smith in June. Joining Mr Gum and Anne Fine will be a host of rib-tickling and riotous books for 5-8 year olds, including the Agatha Parrot, Magnificent Moon-Hare and Alien in My Bellybutton series. Humour is one of the best ways to turn children into readers, which is what Egmont is all about. Earlier this year we launched Electric Monkey, a new YA imprint. We’ve had some brilliant reviews for titles including Code Name Verity, Oliver Twisted and Dear Dylan and additions to the list will include Michael Grant’s best-selling Gone series and Why We Broke Up, the highly-anticipated YA novel by Daniel Handler (aka Mr Lemony Snicket). This autumn sees the launch of Egmont Heritage. This list includes some of the most highly-acclaimed and bestselling children’s books of all time. The high quality range will include classics such as The Wind in the Willows, The Little Prince and The Velveteen Rabbit. In October we are publishing ‘Who Can That Be At This Hour?’, the first in a new series by Lemony Snicket, who himself has remarked: “these books are questionable and contain questions. I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them.” We will also extend our award-winning 10 Minute Tales range in July. Four new character stories for Fireman Sam, Everything’s Rosie, Timmy Time and Winnie-the-Pooh join a strong backlist of 21 titles specifically designed for children aged 3+ and adults to read aloud, read alone and read along. The latest five in our new series of Thomas Story Time titles will be out in August. Based on episodes from the new TV series, these books are aimed at 1–3 year olds who are most familiar with the TV show. Later this year, we will launch four bright and colourful story books for a new pre-school show: Baby Jake. A magical mix of live action and animation based on the adventures of a heroic real baby. Baby Jake Tropical Adventure, Space Adventure, Snowy Adventure and Farm Adventure will be out in September along with three novelty board books.

We’re also hugely excited to be publishing Ireland’s first Laureate for Children’s Literature, Siobhan Parkinson, whose Bruised is shortlisted for the CBI Book of the Year. Talking of award winners, we are delighted that the YLG have recognised David Almond in shortlisting My Name is Mina for the Carnegie Medal – we’ve got our fingers crossed, as he so narrowly missed out on the Guardian Children’s Book Prize. David Melling’s adorable character Hugless Douglas, who’s helping to display all our wonderful books in our advert, is a global success with 13 co-edition partners and even a song in Australia! Look out for Hugless Douglas and the Big Sleep and don’t forget we have a brand new costume available for events. Dust-off your dancing shoes and celebrate all things glittery! The all new CHERUB, starring new agent Ryan Sharma, is the perfect antidote to the XBox! If you’re looking for a way to get youngsters hooked on reading, then any of Robert Muchamore’s books will do the trick. At MIRA Ink we’re excited to be publishing some of the freshest, most sparkling YA around. From tough-edged romance, wistful coming of age to witches, vampires, goddesses and banshees, MIRA Ink has something for everyone. New York Times bestseller Julie Kagawa’s The Immortal Rules is one of the most exciting YA books of the year, taking the dystopian thrills of The Hunger Games and adding a vampiric twist. Soon, feisty heroine Alison will have you asking ‘Katniss, who?’ Look out for the second instalment in 2013. Saving June is the un-missable debut by Hannah Harrington, following Harper on a road trip to California with her sister’s ashes. Saving June will make you weep - and laugh - as Harper finds love, life and rock ‘n’ roll en route. What if the last person you fall in love with is the only one who can save you? This is what Katie McGarry asks in Pushing the Limits, a powerful, deeply affecting contemporary YA romance. It’s a one-of-a-kind book that’s had us crying on the tube and passing dog-eared print-outs between friends! Spellbound is the first book in a magical series from Cara Lynn Shultz. Powerful witches meet Gossip Girl in this story of love so intense it can destroy an ancient curse. Meanwhile, Alice in Wonderland gets a zombie twist in Alice in Zombieland; book one in New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter’s The White Rabbit Chronicles. Looking ahead to 2013; the war between vampires and witches rages in Covet, the second in Mellissa Darnell’s Clann series. As battle surrounds them and a prophecy forbids them to be together, Tristan and Savannah will do anything to protect their forbidden union in this story of blood lust and enduring love. Set in New York in 1897, The Girl in The Clockwork Collar; the second in The Steampunk Chronicles trilogy, features teenage misfit Finley Jayne, who must learn to control her dark powers. Louise Rozett is an exciting talent, and you’ll fall in love with her protagonist, Rose Zarelli, a self-proclaimed word geek and angry girl, who has some CONFESSIONS to make in Confessions of an Angry Girl. At Penguin Children’s, we make stories. Whether it’s incredible fiction by the UK’s best-loved authors, household-name brands and classics or building a life-long love of reading through Ladybird’s extensive range – there’s something for everyone. 2012 breaks new ground for Puffin fiction. Incredible new bestsellers such as Jacqueline Wilson’s Four Children and It and Michelle Paver’s Gods and Warriors move onto the list alongside established favourites. Myth-master extraordinaire, Rick Riordan, presents another bestselling Percy Jackson adventure in The Heroes of Olympus series and Charlie Higson’s next instalment in the Enemy series, The Sacrifice, will have teens on the edge of their seat. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid phenomenon continues, with more laughs (and sales!) than ever before. With millions of children awaiting the 3rd movie and 7th book this November, everyone’s favourite wimp is set to become bigger than ever! With over 63 million users, Moshi Monsters are taking over! The Ultimate Moshlings Collector’s Guide is one of the summer’s most hotly anticipated titles, along with the new Lego Ninjago title and the Skylanders Official Guide. Also - don’t forget to join in with Peppa’s Big Day Out or keep your eyes peeled for Doctor Who in Where’s the Doctor? We’re also celebrating some milestones this year. The Puffin Classics list celebrates its 30th birthday, continuing the release of stunning new covers across the range. Roald Dahl’s The BFG also turns 30, still whizzpopping childrens’ imaginations with a brand new anniversary cover by the legendary Quentin Blake. It’s also a big year for a certain little rabbit celebrating his 110th anniversary with a new adventure - Emma Thompson’s The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit – is the first ever new tale commissioned in addition to Beatrix Potter’s original Peter Rabbit™ books. From naughty rabbit to playful puppy, Eric Hill’s Spot is busy spotting all sorts of things in What Can You See Spot? Ladybird’s got it covered for every stage of a little one’s life, from the delightful Baby Touch Moo Moo for babies and This Little Builder for busy toddlers. We’ve also got a brand new series for little pirate fans, Skullabones Island, and the magical ‘Read it yourself’ chapter book series Genie Street - full of funny adventures for independent readers. Pre-school and Early Years - Our pre-school category this year provides the perfect introduction to the changing seasons with our Animal Seasons series. Pre-schoolers can discover the seasonal transition in nature whilst enjoying wonderful stories and beautiful illustrations. In Puzzle Adventures, mazes, ‘a friend to spot’, and ‘look and find’ features combine to create adventure stories and puzzles children will enjoy solving. Picture Books and Fiction - Our rapidly-expanding QED Storytime series presents four new titles; My Friend the Weather Monster, Listen Up, Pup!, Little Chick and the Secret of Sleep and Hens Don’t Crow will soon become story time favourites with their captivating characters and alluring illustrations. Our Classic Collection series also has four new titles to offer. Contemporary language is teamed with charming artwork on every facing page to make these classic tales accessible to young readers. Key Stage 1 - Animal Diaries is a new series from QED with an imaginative perspective on natural history. Discover the natural world through the eyes of young animals themselves. This unique take on animal life not only encourages young readers to write their own diary, it also gives scientific and accurate knowledge of the specific species of the diarist. Readers will learn about the narrator as well as the animals they encounter along the way with fact sheets on each one. Marvellous Manners poetically encourages good behaviour, as the main characters learn the hard way the consequence of their bad behaviour. Readers will love discovering why pirates should say please and why princesses do share. Key Stage 2 - Budding astronomers will love QED’s new series The Universe Rocks, which guides readers through our solar system and beyond. Stars, spacecrafts, galaxies and planets are all explained in detail with delightful photos and illustrations to accompany each explanation. Animal Attack introduces readers to the deadliest creatures on Earth. Learn fascinating facts about the scariest animals. Gatefolds featuring actual size images enhance young readers’ ability to put the size of a tooth or a claw into perspective. This year QED are introducing a series called Tales from Shakespeare in which classic Shakespearian plays are retold in modern English, making them accessible to all readers.
