from Satoshi Kitamura, and you have the type of first class picture book list that Andersen is so well known for. Here at Andersen we are growing a fiction list to be proud of, fastbecoming known as the home of daring, innovative and award-winning novels. Following the success of recent classics Everybody Jam and Out of Shadows, we have high hopes for heartbreaking debut Urgle which has got everyone talking. And on the subject of award-winners, Autumn welcomes a new novel from twice Carnegie-winner Berlie Doherty with The Company of Ghosts, a beautiful, haunting ghost story for teens, as well as the paperback of Newbery Medalwinner Rebecca Stead’s incredible critically-acclaimed novel Liar & Spy. Look out too for a poignant and moving new book from award-winning Sharon Creech, The Boy on the Porch. Future Jacqueline Wilson fans will love A Friend in Need, the second in a brilliant new series for girls of age 7+ written by Julia Jarman and illustrated by exciting new illustrator Kate Pankhurst. Also out for young readers

this Autumn is the third book in the hilarious Dragonsitter series by Josh Lacey, and illustrated by Garry Parsons. The Dragonsitter’s Castle is every bit as funny as the first book which was shortlisted for The Roald Dahl Funny Prize – and that’s not all on the Dragonsitter front, look out for a fourth book in Spring 2014! Other exciting titles to look out for include Gabriel’s Clock, an exciting fantasy debut that fans of Jonathan Stroud will love, and The Ghost Prison – a stunning, hauntingly illustrated ghost story from Spooks Apprentice author Joseph Delaney that will haunt you long after you’ve put the book down! Bloomsbury are dishing up a smorgasbord of storytelling delights this year, from popular names and well-loved series to exciting new talent. Feast your eyes on some extremely tasty new picture books. Bestsellers Claire Freedman and Sue Hendra team up to wreak mealtime mayhem in the hilarious Spider Sandwiches. Tom Percival’s utterly delightful Herman’s Letter is a touching story about friendship with added lift-theflap fun that’s perfect for sharing, while perennial favourite Debi Gliori’s What’s the Time, Mr Wolf? was just made to be read aloud. We’ve got plenty of fantastic fiction to whet your appetite. Storytelling genius Neil Gaiman has created Fortunately, The Milk . . . , a brilliantly bonkers time-travel adventure unlike anything you’ve read before, packed full of Chris

14

Riddell’s delectable illustrations. Readers craving the next serving of their favourite fiction series will be more than satisfied by Mark Walden’s H.I.V.E. 8: Deadlock, a return to the school where it’s good to be bad, which is as full of high-tech gadgetry and impossible escapes as ever. Meanwhile, Angie Sage wraps up her bestselling Septimus Heap series with Fyre, the eagerly anticipated final instalment. Anyone hungry for horror will love The Dead Men Stood Together, Chris Priestley’s masterful and unsettling reinvention of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. There are plenty of treats to tempt teens, from Natasha Carthew’s bonechillingly powerful debut Winter Damage to Crown of Midnight, the action-packed, heart-wrenching sequel to Sarah J. Maas’s addictive YA hit

Throne of Glass. Sarah Crossan’s bittersweet comingof-age story The Weight of Water is shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, as is Nick Lake, whose second novel Hostage Three is a taut and devastatingly powerful thriller about a family captured by Somali pirates. When Mr Dog Bites is destined to be the book everyone is talking about in 2014. Brian Conaghan’s hilarious and breathtakingly original novel does for Tourette’s what The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time did for Asperger’s. Definitely one not to be missed. Jo Empson’s debut picture book RABBITYNESS was published to universal acclaim in 2012. NEVER EVER displays her inimitable sense of fun, her love of storytelling and surprise, and her delight in the magical world of the imagination.

Never Ever

This heart-warming debut by Susanna Moores, delicately illustrated using pencil and wash, is a hilarious introduction to something that all children (and many adults) find difficult!

Or does it? IT’S NOT YOURS, IT’S MINE!

Blieka has a present. It’s a lovely red ball, and it’s not for sharing! But what happens when the ball loses its bounce?

Nothing ever happens to me. Never, ever. Ever, never. Nothing.

SUSANNA MOORES

Jo Empson’s debut picture book Rabbityness has had an amazing year. Shortlisted for four major awards and longlisted for the Greenaway Prize, it has been recognised as a very special book by adults and children the world over. Its celebration of the individuality and the creativity in all of us, and the value of these life-affirming qualities when loss is encountered, resonates with everyone who reads the book. Nothing ever happens to me. Never, ever. Or does it? The sublime joke underlying Jo’s second book Never Ever demonstrates her inimitable sense of fun, her love of storytelling, language and surprise and her delight in the magical world of the imagination. Harold Finds a Voice, by Courtney Dicmas, features a parrot who is an amazing mimic, and who can imitate the sound of everything in his home. Tired of repeating the same old noises, he resolves to explore the other sounds out there in the big wide world. But what happens when he finally realises that he doesn’t have a voice of his own? This book is full of colour, humour, invention and onomatopoeia – perfect for joining in! Another debutant, Susanna Moores, deals with the age-old problem of sharing in It’s Not Yours, It’s MINE! Blieka has a present. It’s a lovely red ball, and it’s not for sharing! But what happens when the ball loses its air? Will help arrive, and will Blieka realise that sharing brings some unexpected benefits? Airlie Anderson’s Momo and Snap are NOT Friends is unique in that it is told solely through actions and sounds. We defy any reader not to want to imitate the characters’ gestures and utterances. Initially competitive, the two characters become united in adversity and learn the comfort of true friendship. Child’s Play is a fiercely independent publisher, actively promoting diversity and inclusivity, and specialising in whole-child development, focused play, life skills and values. Aimed mostly at 0-8 year olds, it caters for a wide range of different learning styles.

Macmillan caught up with Chris Riddell, author of Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse, which publishes in September, and asked him a few questions. What were your favourite books when you were growing up? And what are your favourite books now you are grown up? One of my favourite books was ‘Flat Stanley’ by Jeff Brown. I loved the illustrations but I loved the concept even more. Stanley turns the tragedy of being flattened into triumph by embracing his flatness- becoming a kite, posting himself, hiding in a picture frame to catch a burglar - sublime! Another favourite was ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. I loved the story but I loved John Tenniel’s illustrations even more. My favourite was the white rabbit in his waistcoat and umbrella. I copied that illustration over and over, trying to analyse the cross-hatching. It was only later I discovered that Tenniel was also a political cartoonist and his cartoons were filled with characters right out of

important is it to encourage children to visit libraries over the school What influence do you feel these have holidays? on your work now? I think it is extremely important to Flat Stanley influenced Ottoline, a encourage children to use their local chapter book where the pictures are libraries, now more than ever, but integral with the text to telling the story. especially during the holidays. There is Tenniel inspired me to work both for compelling research that shows children children and adults. who read purely for pleasure during the summer holidays significantly improve Your new book, Goth Girl, is out this their academic performance when they year. Can you tell us about it? return to school. Wonderland.

Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse follows-on from my Ottoline books in telling a story with words and pictures, and is an 18th century gothic novel for eight-year-olds. It is about Ada, the only daughter of the Byronic Lord Goth, England’s foremost bicycling poet and her adventures in the rambling ancestral home of Ghastly Gorm Hall. There are mythical creatures, distinguished lady novelists, radical cartoonists and of course, ghosts!

You’re also a political cartoonist. What are the differences you’ve found between illustrating for adults and illustrating for children? Children are often more discerning and perceptive when it comes to visual literacy. We can become more literal minded as adults. I do enjoy bringing my children’s book characters into my political cartoons in different guises- Tory trolls, Russian bears and nuclear white elephants.

You’re the official illustrator for the Summer Reading Challenge 2013. How What advice would you give to aspiring young writers and illustrators?

My advice to aspiring young writers and illustrators is to keep a notebook with you at all times and to write, doodle and sketch in it every day. My notebooks are where all my cartoon and story ideas begin and where I do all my thinking. I used to jot ideas down on pieces of paper then lose them but now they’re all kept together in my notebooks.

Orchard are known and loved for the breadth and joy of their picture books and we hope you can share our excitement about some very special books this year. The Dark by Lemony Snickett and Jon Klassen is an amazing, wonderful book that is garnering rave reviews in the UK and around the world. The Memory Tree by Britta Teckentrup is a heart-lifting story about loss and death, a difficult subject which Britta handles with great sensitivity in her story focusing around the death of Fox and what it means for his woodland friends. Mandy Sutcliffe’s adorable Belle and Boo continue their adventures in Yummy Scrummy Day. For fun and mischief look no further than the wickedly naughty Ding Dong Gorilla! by Michelle Robinson, and Leonie Lord and the perilous counting adventure in Ten Little Pirates by Mike Brownlow and Simon Rickerty. We have plenty of Christmas goodies, but choosing just one to highlight, it’s the undoubtedly cute rhyme I Love You Father Christmas from bestselling duo Giles Andreae and Emma Dodd. Usborne is the largest independent children’s publisher in the UK and the second largest children’s imprint, according to Nielsen Bookscan figures. We publish a huge variety of children’s books – with over two thousand titles in print – for every age from baby to young adult, and have won multiple awards. Usborne was named Children’s Publisher of the Year in 2012 at the Bookseller Industry Awards where the judges called Usborne “a powerhouse that retains a good, independent spirit”. The also praised our sales figures: despite difficult times, Usborne showed an amazing 18% growth in 2011, which topped off 10 successive years of sales increases – “a unique record and one that confirms Usborne as a heavyweight in UK publishing”. 2013 brings us more cause for

62

celebration as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. Peter Usborne MBE (an honour awarded for services to the publishing industry in 2011) founded Usborne Publishing in 1973 with the intention of creating books that could compete for children’s attention with TV, comics and magazines. Forty years on, children have more media competing for their time and interest than ever, but Usborne books still have what Peter calls ‘quali-pop’ – a combination of very high quality and very high popularity. The company, and the Usborne list, continue to grow all the time. For instance The Usborne Reading Programme – which consists of beautifully produced, full-colour, hardback books on a wide range of subjects, both fiction and non-fiction – now contains more than 300 titles, graded in seven levels, with

more on the way. Highlights for the second half of 2013 include special 40th anniversary editions of Usborne classics including The KnowHow Book of Spycraft (Peter Usborne’s ‘favourite Usborne book of all time’), The Complete Book of Farmyard Tales, First Thousand Words (the original findthe-duck book) and How Your Body Works (now completely reillustrated by the original artist, Colin King). We are also continuing to publish essential titles such as our word books for early years, the Phonics Readers series, lots of picture books, more illustrated stories and, of course, fiction. For the full range of Usborne books, visit our website www.usborne.com.

2012 has been an unprecedented year for Walker Books with Patrick Ness and Jim Kay winning both the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals for A Monster Calls and Frank Cottrell Boyce winning the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize for The Unforgotten Coat. With an array of amazing books from talent familiar and new, 2013 is set to be just as exciting. We have lashings of action with Anthony Horowitz’s Russian Roulette, the highly anticipated prequel to the bestselling Alex Rider series, charting the journey of a young assassin. A cynic meets an unlikely superhero in Kate DiCamillo’s genre-breaking Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures. Mysterious Traveller is an inspired tale about the strength of wisdom by Carnegie Medallist Mal Peet and his wife, Elspeth Graham, captivatingly illustrated by P.J. Lynch. Rob Lloyd-Jones’ debut novel Wild Boy is set in the underworld of Victorian London and will appeal to fans of Sherlock Holmes. Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made by New York Times No. 1 bestselling cartoonist, Stephan Pastis, is sure to have kids in stitches. From Vivian French comes Stargirl Academy, a magical new series for girls while Scream Street author Tommy Donbavand returns with a monster comedy-horror series, Fangs Vampire Spy. We have an impressive range of young adult fiction too. From two-time Carnegie Medal-winning Patrick Ness comes More Than This, a provocative new novel chronicling the life – or perhaps afterlife – of a teen trapped in a crumbling, abandoned world.

Richard Kurti’s debut YA novel Monkey Wars is an unflinching examination of the politics of power. Edward Hogan returns with a second compelling and thrilling novel, The Messengers. Blood Donors is an edgy, funny mix of urban horror and social realism from radical new voice Steve Tasane. Ancient Japanese gods and monsters are unleashed on modern-day London in Zoë Marriott’s The Night Itself while Sawbones by Catherine Johnson is a forensic crime thriller set in eighteenth century London. Look out too for some exciting new fiction from publishers Constable & Robinson and Little Island who we represent, including The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente, The Dead Girls Detective Agency by Suzie Cox, Bartolomé by Rachel van Kooji and The World’s Worst Mothers by Sabine Ludwig. If all this isn’t quite enough, we have a wonderful selection of picture books on offer. Silver Buttons is the exquisite new picture book from Kate Greenaway Medal-winning Bob Graham. Mo Willems returns with a riotous re-telling of a classic fairytale with Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs and That Is Not a Good Idea!, the hugely entertaining story of a hungry fox who meets a goose! Ballet Cat by Fiona Ross is a twirl of a book that celebrates friendship and individuality. From dynamic picture book maker Hervé Tullet comes Help! We Need a Title!, a book that tests the very meaning of a picture book story. Splash, Anna Hibiscus!, is the perfect summer read from Atinuke and

Lauren Tobia. Nicola Davies evokes a powerful vision of a world where people and nature live in harmony in The Promise, beautifully illustrated by award-winning Laura Carlin. Send for a Superhero! is an exciting blend of picture book and comic book storytelling from Michael Rosen and Katharine McEwen. Every baby is individual, so every Walker Book is individual too. Honk, Honk! Baa Baa! and Time for Bed by Petr Horacek will delight babies everywhere with engaging artwork and simple flaps. There are also some exciting graphic novels to look forward to. Bad dreams just got good in The Sleepwalkers, a striking new direction for Kate Greenaway shortlisted Viviane Schwarz. Set in a near-future Britain, Dark Satanic Mills is a powerful new story and debut comic book from award-winning author Marcus Sedgwick collaborating with brother Julian Sedgwick and internationally renowned comics artist John Higgins. In Non-Fiction, we have Patrick Dillon’s The Story of Britain, a magnificent narrative history of Britain from 1066 to the end of the twentieth century, brought to life by P.J. Lynch’s fine full-colour illustrations. Stewart Ross and acclaimed illustrator Stephen Biesty present some of the greatest explorations ever made in the remarkable Great Explorers. We are sure you’ll agree that 2013 is set to be another astounding year for children everywhere.
