ABORIGINAL KIMBERLEY STONE HEADS A rare group of Aboriginal Kimberley Stone Heads carved by the Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. This movement started in the late 1970’s and continued into the early 1980’s with thepatronage of the well known collector Lord McAlpine being a driving force. The imagery varies from realistic to what could be described as primitive natural interpretations of the human face. The heads are carved from sandstone and decorated using paints and natural ochres.

PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVES OF ABORIGINALS A rare group of 25 glass negatives depicting aborigines in different social situations. The monogram of Detective Walter Lingwood Smith, who was given the job of organising photography for the SA Police force in 1892, is present on several of the slides. Each glass negative measures 8 x 10.5 cm.

VERA COATES Art Exhibition at the Institute Building, North Terrace, Adelaide, circa 1915 Oil on canvas 51 x 36 cm sig lower right This painting depicts an exhibition at the heritage listed building on the corner of Kintore Avenue and North Terrace that is part of the State Library of South Australia. This historically significant painting illustrates an exhibition of the period, with artworks by artists such as James Ashton, and demonstrates how at the time aboriginal works were hung alongside those of the artists of European descendent. The artist Vera Coates was associated with the Royal South Australian Society of Arts.
