SAM LEACH

EXHIBITION: 20 NOVEMBER - 6 DECEMBER 2014 Peter Walker Fine Art 101 Walkerville Terrace Walkerville, South Australia 5081 info@peterwalker.com.au

Sam Leach is one of Australia¹s most admired contemporary artists, widelyacclaimed for his finely-detailed, meticulously-rendered, jewel-like paintings, works which have their intellectual and artistic origins in the traditions of the seventeenth-century Dutch ‘Golden Age’. But Leach’s paintings and sculptures are distinctive not only for their virtuoso technical skill; there is a great deal more than gratuitous or solipsistic aesthetic gamesmanship at issue in his oeuvre. For all their ludic visual wit, these works are seriously meaningful. They challenge us to attend closely and thoughtfully to the world beyond the picture plane: to consider economic and historical processes, hard and soft scientific realities. Behind the super-fine, near-invisible brushwork, in the velvety shadows, lie profound and sometimes disturbing philosophical, political and personal questions.
