Architectural Concept The bilateral symmetry that derives from the extension of Beijing’s central axis, choreographs the fluid integration of the distinct elements that create the Phase 1 terminal building’s spatial organisation diagram. Like two wings to the north, the Phase 2 terminals articulate and reinforce the completeness of the diagram, integrated as a seamless flow that sits between forecourt and landscape.

Terminal Spatial Organisation The Terminal building is formed by a series of elements that articulate the architectural qualities of each space, while providing an integrated functional and spatial experience for the traveller. The roof shells define the main zones of the building, arranged around the central orientation space where the airside and landside spaces meet. This array of roof structures configures a sequence of spaces that contain the different programs and functions that allow the terminal to operate.
The interlocking layering and weaving of internal spaces creates a sense of verticality throughout the terminal building that allows for a continuous visual orientation and clear navigation for arriving and departing passengers. The forecourt and the train station create an integrated continuous flowing space and define the building as an icon that sits seamlessly within the airfield and the surrounding Airport City.

Terminal Passenger Flows These diagrams show the spatial flows for the terminal. All domestic and international passengers have been separated after check-in. International passengers flow from the main check-in facility at Level 3 (+12m) to the centralised International processing facilities at Level 2 (+6m).
交通接驳(-7米) Transport Interchange (-7m)
It therefore also alleviates the need for technologies that would have been required to prevent these scenarios, such as facial image-recognition, that may have led to additional responsibilities for staff at presecurity and at each domestic boarding gate.
The other major design feature of the schematic passenger flows is the separation of departing CIP Domestic passengers flow across Level 2 from check- passengers from the rest of the outbound population. This is achieved through provision of separate CIP in, directly through one of four separate processing drop-off, check-in and security facilities at Level 5 zones also located at that level. This separation of (+22m) and provides for an enhanced experience for international and domestic passengers mitigates any this passenger type. CIP passengers rejoin regular possibility of a passenger ‘short-cutting’ between international and domestic flights airside, which could passenger flows within the domestic and international retail areas, wherein all passenger types are given the allow a foreigner to enter China without having gone opportunity to enjoy the commercial offerings. through the requisite immigration process.

One of the most poignant elements of the design of such a large facility is the degree to which level changes are reduced to a minimum. In the design for the Beijing New Airport terminal, domestic departure facilities are kept on one level, only stepping once to bring passengers to the single pier level. This stepping not only facilitates an aboveground, double-height baggage hall, but also allows a clear view from the retail and seating areas over the airfield. Passengers are also able to view over the gate signage from their vantage point within the lounge areas, thus creating an exemplary clarity of wayfinding unlike almost any other airport.

International departures also experience only one level change in their entire journey, being placed underneath domestic departures to create an effective separation between the two populations beyond check-in. Once in the International Departures lounge, no more level changes are required on the outward bound journey.

The roof structures were developed using gravity defined form finding algorithms to achieve long column free spans with maximum efficiency, reflected directly in the expression of the architectural form. Using the most appropriate construction forms, complexity in the geometry and assembly are reduced to a minimum. Since all structure is hidden behind cladding; standard methods of construction such as space frames and steel grid shells ensure that a maximum of off-site prefabrication can be employed. In the floor structures, too, the seemingly complex geometries are simplified as best possible using rectangular grids and standard steel/concrete composite construction.
Isometric view of the double layer steel space frame roof structures adapted to the organic architectural external envelope.
Isometric view of all floor plates and the roof illustrates the position of the expansion joints and typical detail of expansion joint where the columns are doubled-up.
Isometric view of all floor structures shows the different grids used to enhance the functional requirements of the building and minimise the need of transfer structures.
This view shows the structural composition of the structure: long span steel roofs, composite concrete floors and reinforced concrete shear walls providing stability.

01 Section 01
NAMOC’s façade is redefined through a geometric and material duality that underscores the spatial duality of the museum: complementing mineral materials are used to express the different contexts of permanent and temporary collections which are already defined through the spatial articulation of the building. This improved materiality also provides a greater functionality for the building, with simple maintenance and improved constructability. The heaviness of the GRC contrasts the lightness of the glass panels while together giving a greater sense permanence and sophisticated majesty to the museum.

Design Principles Volumetric Resolution / Geometry and Structure As established in Frame Work Design Stage, the volume has been rationalized to be symmetric where possible having large benefits for design budget and construction. An important architectural feature that has driven the project since the early competition design intent has been to develop the geometrical resolution of the stadium as an intricate structural composition that is both light and cohesive.
