CAMDEN HEILBORN, SIARAH BROWN MLK ASSEMBLY The MLK assembly has come and gone and of course it was a big success. To honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., MBMS had very talented music performances. The orchestra played “Amazing Grace” and choir sang “Imagine”. “’Imagine’ song represents no war, and peace,” said Mr. Char. The band played, “Just a Close Walk with Thee” , which is a New Orleans Jazz classic . Also Ms. Ryan did a play of when young Martin
Luther King Jr. was a boy. The staff had a big surprise for Mr. Billy when they called him out to honor him for the school board recognizing him for being an outstanding staff member. CELEBRATE CHANGE Celebrate Change was a wonderful program that provides teenagers a chance to present their strengths and talents on Jan. 24 at ARHS. “[It also helps them show their] contribution to the society.” member of Celebrate Change and Builders Club Chayse Cason said.
Besides going to the annual We Day in Seattle where they earned to go and celebrate their changes they have made. Celebrate Change and Builders Club has raised money for UNICEF. Also they decorated tissue boxes to hand out to teachers to make their day. SCHEDULE CHANGES Second semester means schedule changes. Students will be getting new electives and different classes. There are not too many students wanting to change their schedule, but it still takes a lot of time. “[Counselors] have spent many hours because of overloads and the computer made mistakes,” counselor Mr. Vatne said. Schedule changes take time completing without destroying someone’s schedule. According to Vatne, about 15-16 students ask for a second semester schedule change per grade, and about ten of them work. Vatne recommended if students do want to request for a schedule change, there are slips to fill out in the attendance office and main office. CAREER FAIR The annual Auburn Career Fair is a way “to expose our students to some of the professions” that students might want to do when they’re older, accrdng to assistant principal Mr. Lewis. The Career Fair can help students decide what they want to do after college. Lewis said that the “[school work that students are doing now] relates to your future,” This makes kids think that different things intertwine with what they are doing now. Police officers, engineers, caterers, and many other professions showed up at the Career Fair and gave students many ideas on what they might want to do in their future.

ADELINE MAURUS With the second performance task having just passed (only four school weeks after the last one), students are most likely wishing that they never have to do another one in their lifetime, but there is one more remaining to prepare for the SBA. In school, students may become easily overwhelmed with the stress of being expected to study for said tests, complete all of their homework assignments, and perform in extra-
curricular activities. Due to this, some students might believe that they are being severely over tested, though teachers might have another opinion. “I give a quiz per week, so that would be about 36-38 [per year], more or less, [be]cause some weeks we don’t have one, ” sixth grade science teacher Ms. Root said when explaining why she thought that the amount of tests that students take is the perfect amount. “I think tests are important to let students, and parents, and teachers know how much students are learn-
ing.” In Root’s case, her quizzes are short and to the point, never needing more than 15 minutes to finish. Some tests, however, drag on for days, such as the performance task that has recently passed. “I don’t find [having the second performance task so soon after the first one] [a good idea] because you literally just finished the performance task, and you have to do another one right away,” eighth grader Andrew Chon said. Much of the general student population agreed with Chon’s opinion, resulting in the thought that they are being over tested. The topics that are provided are dull and highly vague. They are enough to put a student to sleep, or at least confuse them. Students become bored easily and might forget to focus. Being required to sit and write with very few pauses also takes its toll. The hand-cramps that you end up with are terrible and take up time that you could be using to finish the performance task. “I think it’s possible to spend too much time on a test,” Root said. “But if tests are short and give good information, I think they’re important.” The performance task, a test that spans over the length of five days, could be considered a test that students spend too much time on. If students spend a long time on tests, they might become uninterested and not try. All in all, the performance task may be too soon and cause stress for many students while trying to provide information for government statistics.

TYLER HOLDEN Designed to prepare students for the SBA, performance tasks can be difficult on students and teachers. Eighth grade language arts teacher Mrs. Keaton modeled her “creative” process for assessing the second round of performance tasks taken by MBMS students. These three steps don’t necessarily reflect how Keaton’s colleagues grade papers as teachers grade these test three time annually.
1.
GETTING STARTED: Fight the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness associated with grading 130+ essays and sets of questions. Climb the pile of papers to give students the feedback they need to meet standard on the SBA.
2.
POTTER METHOD: Use strategies of assessing student work from your favorite literary works. Harry Potter’s “swish and flick” method may not let you summon your magical grading powers, but at least you win style points.
3.
AVOID ANGER: After grading five of the 130+ assessments, you realized that all students used the same evidence. Take a break and relax to avoid rage-quitting. Grades are due in only a few days.

SOPHIA R AMOS & AISLYNN HESTER “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward,” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said. That’s exactly what Martin Luther King did, and thus he was spit on, stabbed, and threatened by many, but he didn’t let that hold him back. Equality, freedom, and justice are some of the ideals King fought for. King knew from the beginning that life was unfair, as racism surface everywhere he fought for equality. Later on, King played a crucial role in the desegregation of AfricanAmericans in the south and other areas of the nation. This peacekeeper also led the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ,which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, and national origin. Also, he led the creation of the voting rights act of 1965, which outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in the many southern states. In 1964, King got recognized for his great work and obtained the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, King was assassinated by a single bullet, while he stood on the balcony of room 306 at Lorraine Motel. “I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land,” King said in his last speech before his death. “So I’m happy, tonight, I’m not worried about anything. Some people are too busy to realize the importance of Martin Luther King Day but we need to understand that King worked hard to make this world a better place. “[I believe it’s important to celebrate Martin Luther King Day] it helps people remember what he did,” Casperson said. “And being like him could make really make a difference in this world.”

Rosa Parks, the honorable woman who is forgotten by most, and ignored by many school districts, including ASD, as a holiday. Rosa Park’s official holiday is Feb. 4. This remarkable woman, who sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, faced first-hand the horrors of racial discrimination. In her childhood, she lived with her grandparents, who
were both former slaves, on a farm in Pine Level, Ala. In one particular memory, Rosa Park remembered her grandmother sitting on their porch with a shotgun as the KKK marched past. Through the rest of her life, Rosa Parks was forced to go to segregated schools, who were only supplied with second-hand materials. When she was older, she dropped out of high school to help her sick mother and

Raymond was a barber and a member of the NAACP - the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He helped Rosa get her high school diploma and join the NAACP. Then, on Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving her seat to a white man.

She was bailed later that same day with a date for her court trial, Dec. 5. She was convicted guilty at her hearing and was fined $10 for her “crimes”. Rosa Parks was an ordinary person who decided that she had had enough of being pushed around because of her race. Rosa Parks is an example to all who think that their actions are too small to make a difference, and proves that everyone can make a change.

AARON BALDRIDGE Dances have been a big part of MBMS culture and 2015 has been a big year for dances. This year, the first dance for sixth graders called the Sock Hop Dance, sponsored by Mathletes, took place and
the Glow in the Dark Dance, sponsored by Yearbook, was popular among the seventh and eighth graders. Along with being popular among the students, the dances raised money, which means the school can get better things and get more for the next dance. This year the Valentine’s dance will have the
theme of a “Love cruise ship to a tropical paradise,” according to Mr. Char, who plans the dance. “[I like] to see kids have a good time, and eat a lot food, and my noodle bar,” Char said. For the first Valentine’s Day dance in 2010 as a fundraiser, about 100 people showed up, but with a steady increase, as of 2015 about 250 people showed up. Averaging $1300 each year the dance is a huge hit with the students in the first year only 100 people showed up to the dance but now the number is up to around 250 which means more money for the choir and drama programs, which means better dances. Along with the food the dance also includes a photo booth and a gaming room! Now mind you it doesn’t have GTA 5 or Fallout 4 or Halo, but it does have just dance so you can work off all that food you just ate. Mr. Char felt dances would remain popular at MBMS. “Dances are only going to get better and better because we’re starting a tradition and each year we do better,” he said.
One of the dances that took place in 2015 was The Glow in the Dark Dance. Eighth grader Lily Scheschy believed the dance was a success, saying “Maybe 50 to 75.[Out of those] about 25 to 35 kids brought somebody with them [to the dance].” So you might be asking, oh what about the people who didn’t bring somebody whether as a friend or a date. Well most were dancing awkwardly and running around. Since the Valentine’s Day Dance is coming up Scheschy was asked what she like about the Valentine’s Day dance she said, “I liked the game room and the photo booth.” The Sock Hop Dance was the first ever MBMS dance for sixth graders. Sixth grader David Essang-Ekpo said, “It was great in every way.” With about 70 people showing up most were doing dances like the whip and the nae-nae and other trending dances. At the Sock Hop you could eat food (of course), dance, and just have a good time wearing holiday socks that went up to the knee.

CHLOE KNOX & JOCELLE PHAM The annual Valentine’s Day Dance, will be held on Feb. 12, for seventh and eighth graders, from 2:00-4:00. Since seventh graders haven’t attended before, and some eighth graders haven’t either, this list of do’s and don’ts will help you have a great time at this event.
WHAT TO WEAR GIRLS Many girls have the tough decision on choosing what to wear for the upcoming Valentine's Day Dance. “I think they should wear a dress, something nice, not too fancy,” Gio Parascondola said. Although, rules such as not being able to show your shoulders and having to have the length of your clothing mid-thigh limits options.
WHAT TO WEAR GIRLS Even though the dance isn’t formal, it definitely isn’t casual. Eighth grader Tyler Pisha said, “[Girls should not wear] sweats, a sporty outfit, a T-shirt, and boots [to the dance].” Even though sweats can be comfy, you should leave them in your closet for this February's Valentine’s Day Dance.
WHAT TO WEAR GUYS
HOW TO ASK SOMEONE TO DANCE
For guys, they have many options from wearing jeans and a nice, casual shirt to slacks and a button up. “I would suggest jeans and a flannel, and definitely style your hair,” choir student, Kyle Miller said. Casual clothing is okay but make sure ahead of time that it’s not too casual where you look underdressed.
If you go to the dance with a date, the awkward question of should we slow dance, arises. If you decide to, there is an inappropriate way of asking. Eighth grader Katie Severson said, “Don’t text [your date or crush] from across the room and ask them to dance with you later.” Just like asking someone to go to the dance, asking someone to dance is just as important to be done in person.
WHAT TO WEAR GUYS
ASKING A DATE
Taken directly from eighth grader, Angelica Agcaoili, “Guys shouldn’t wear basketball shorts and a T-shirt [to the dance].” At the same time, eighth grader, Gio Parascondola said “...not too fancy.” So, leave the shorts, and ditch the suit and tie, and wear something nice, rather than fancy, for the dance.
Some people believe having a date to the dance is essential, some do not. Also, many people think that the guy should ask the girl instead of the girl asking out the guy. “I would bring my girlfriend flowers and ask her upfront,” Tyler Pisha said.
HOW TO ASK SOMEONE TO DANCE
ASKING A DATE
When slow dancing the lady’s hands should be on the guy’s shoulders and the guy’s hands should be on her waist. There should be enough space between you two where you can fit an algebra book between each other. “Ask them ahead of time to save a dance for you later,” Mr. Carter said.
A lot of people take it upon themselves to go to the Valentine’s Dance with a date. So, this creates the problem of how to ask someone to the dance. Eighth grader, Brittany Porter said, “Don’t have someone ask the person for you, and don’t text them.” So step it up this year, and if you’re going to ask someone to the dance, ask them in person.
TYLER PUHLICK & LOGAN CONNER Every year all around the world on Feb. 2 a little groundhog pops its head out of the ground, ready to judge if it’s going to come out and enjoy an early spring, or go back into its den and hibernate through the last couple weeks of winter. Some people have different opinions about Groundhog Day, some say that it shouldn’t even be a holiday, while others celebrate it at large festivals. Like every year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania they throw a giant parade. Those who do care about the
groundhog and what its decision is have high hopes for it choosing the season they like best. Will the groundhog see his shadow and go back underground for six more weeks of winter, or will it come out for an early spring? “I care about Groundhog Day, I would rather have an early spring than six more weeks of winter,” seventh grader, Gunnar Tang said. Groundhog Day is so popular in some places that Hollywood film writers thought it would be a great idea to make a film on it. This fantasy comedy featured Bill Murray. In the film, Murray has to go to
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to report on Groundhog Day, but there’s a twist, Murray did not want to report on the groundhog so he gave a bad report, and the same day kept repeating itself until he got it right. The movie turned out to be a hit in 1993 and received a 96% on Rotten
Tomatoes.
“The movie was good, but it definitely could have been better,” seventh grader Ethan Walter said. Different places across the world have different names for the groundhogs that show up on their soil. In Raleigh, North Carolina there is a groundhog named Sir Walter Wally,
and in Woodstock, Illinois there is a groundhog named Woodstock Willie. “I don’t know much about groundhogs but I think the names are pretty cool,” eighth grader Kade Purcell said. The Germans brought the tradition of groundhogs day to the United States. Whether you think it is a dumb, pointless holiday, or a fun holiday dedicated to celebrating the choice of a little groundhog, a ton of Americans and almost all the people of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania will celebrate it for a long time to come.

The Joke’s Over, Trump As of Jan. 5, 2016, Donald Trump was leading republican votes with 35% support, with his closest competitor Ted Cruz trailing with 18% support. A lot of people think the Trump campaign is funny, and that when it comes down to it, no one will vote for him. As the election date comes closer, some Americans are quite frightened by Trump’s stance. Do you think Donald Trump has a good chance of becoming the United States next president?
2016 Movies Coming Out
Many exciting movies are coming out in 2016. Such as Finding Dory (June 17), Captain America: Civil War (May 6), Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25), the Divergent Series: Allegiant (March 18), X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27), and many more. Most of these movies are ending the series, and others are there for your entertainment. Will you be going to see any of these movies?
Valentine’s Dance Attendance The Annual MBMS Valentine’s Dance is hosted by Mr. Char, the choir and drama director of our school, along with assistance from our choir students. The dance has been a special Valentine’s Day tradition that seventh and eighth graders have attended for six years. It’s a time and place where you celebrate the day with a special someone or with friends. The dance consists of music, dancing, and snacks. Will you be going to the Valentine’s dance on Feb. 12?
2016 Summer Olympics The 2016 Olympics are being held in Rio, lasting about two and a half weeks, from Aug. 5-21. Events range from the typical, volleyball, gymnastics and swimming, to the not so ordinary including canoe sprinting, sailing, and trampoline jumping. Are you excited for this summer’s Olympics?
Taurus (April 20- May 20): Take a nap and relax knowing that no one is cheating on you. You just get to be worry free. Gemini (May 21- June 20): Relax and watch some Netflix; don’t think about how single you are. If you do, then you start crying and getting all sad… and who needs that. Cancer (June 21- July 22): Get a bucket of ice cream and some chocolates; cuddle on the couch with a soft blanket and cry to romantic movies. Leo (July 23- Aug. 22): Be proud that you are single. You are independent and handle problems on your own. Even though at times you feel lonely, you should still do what makes you happy. Virgo (Aug. 23- Sept. 22): You feel like you are a good person, but you don’t understand why you are single. Your charm must be too much for them to handle. Libra (Sept. 23- Oct. 22): Enjoy the good life; you don’t have to spend money on anyone but yourself. Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 21): If you don’t get a date, make like Kylo Ren and throw a huge tantrum. Sagittarius (Nov. 22- Dec. 21): School work is your main focus right now. Your grades should matter more to you than having a relationship.
Dance Being Overrated Students at MBMS take the dance to a whole new level. They treat it as if it’s a middle school prom. Guys go to great extents to ask girls to the dance and girls wear dresses as if they were to go on a red carpet. This middle school dance is just too simply celebrate Valentine’s Day at school. Are the students at our school making the dance overrated?
Miley and Liam Back Together Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were a strong couple after starring together in The Last Song, in 2010. They then broke up in 2013. Now, in 2016, all sorts of rumors are going around, “Miley and Liam engaged?” “Miley and Liam moving in?” One thing for sure, Miley and Liam are believed to be back together. Do you think Miley and Liam are a good couple?

JEREMY GREGERSON Last month, custodian Billy Daniels was recognized by the Auburn School District Board of Directors for his outstanding service. Daniels is known as “Mr. Billy” to his peers and students at
MBMS. He is known for being extremely kind to students and starting conversations with them. According to eighth grader Juwan Jackson, “He’s really nice and fun to be around.” Daniels takes the time to really get to know the students. For example, he remembers their birth-
days, he high-fives them, and really just talks to them. Daniels wants to be remembered as “a good person” and it looks like he’s making that happen. People like Gio Parascondola have said that he’s “an amazing person.” Making the students at MBMS happy, is one of the most important thing to Daniels. Before Daniels came to MBMS, he worked at Dick Scobee as a custodian, and at Boeing as a shipping and receiving clerk. He’s worked at MBMS for almost nine years. In his childhood, Daniels always wanted to play football for any team in the NFL.. Even though he didn’t become a football player, Daniels inspires students and teachers here at MBMS in a way that no one else can. When you say “Hi” to Daniels he replies with a very jubilant “Hey how are you doin’ young man?” Or “How are you doin’ honey?” He inspires students to be “nicer and more cheerful.” Mr. Billy inspires teachers, like sixth grade social studies teacher Mr. Brown, to be more cheerful. “How Mr. Billy comes to school every day with a smile on his face, and how positive he is inspires me to be happier at work,” Brown said. During lunch, Daniels will go around the Commons and ask you how your day has been and most times will pat you on the back. He’s a really generous person and out of the blue he’ll give you some candy, a snack, soda, or anything that he wants to give. Daniels wants to be remembered as a good person and he likes to talk and really get to know the students here at MBMS. The students at MBMS are his favorite thing and we make him happy. He is most grateful to have this job and he is glad to be around good people.
Daniels was recognized at an ASD school board meeting and at our MLK assembly for being an outstanding staff member. It is his “greatest achievement” and he “loves it”. PHOTO BY C. HEILBORN

SOPHIA RAMOS & KYLIE NILES “People say, 'I'm going to sleep now,' as if it were nothing. But it's really a bizarre activity,” comedian George Carlin said. “'For the next several hours, while the sun is gone, I'm going to become unconscious, temporarily losing command over everything I know and understand.” According to the National Sleep Foundation sleep is essential for health and wellbeing, despite it’s oddity to Carlin. Studies show that at least 40 million Americans suffer from seventy different sleep disorders like Narcolepsy which is a sleep disorder that involves uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. Sleeping is also essential when it comes to school. Lack of sleep impairs your attention in school. Not only is sleep important to your brain and health, but sleep is also important for athletic performances. Cyclist Lance Armstrong usually gets six to eight hours of sleep to improve mood, concentration, and performance. Sleep is important but ignored by many, nearly three quarters of Americans say they don't get enough sleep. Lack of sleep is a growing problem and if the majority of people are tired every day that could affect how well jobs are being done.
SLEEP TIPS Sleep is extremely important to all the teens of our generation. Most middle school students are deprived of the sufficient amount of sleep teenagers need. The following are some tips to assist you in falling asleep. Maintain an acceptable sleeping schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can be really affect your sleeping patterns. If you follow this tip, your body will know when it’s supposed to shut down. You’ll be asleep in no time! Turn off your electronics. Bright light triggers your brain to stay awake. Turn off your electronics and relax at least 60 minutes before you go to bed. Eat earlier. Avoid heavy meals before you fall asleep, bodies cannot digest while asleep and will stay awake. Try not to eat for one to two hours before you go to bed. Have a comfortable sleeping environment. Make sure your room is a place of relaxation. Your pillows fluffed and comfy, your room should be dark and a cool temperature of 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Waking up earlier in the morning (TOP) allows time for relaxing activities such as reading a book or watching TV while the rest of the world sleeps the morning away. Family Troubles
So you wish to know what grinds my gears? Very well. My idiot grandson. First off, every five seconds, he throws tantrums and destroys everything in sight! Does he even KNOW how much that equipment costs? I’m going to go bankrupt by the time he destroys his next planet! … even though I’m dead. Apart from that, he WORSHIPS me!! Why, in JarJar’s strange name, did he FREAKING CHOOSE THE DARK SIDE? I’ve assured my peers, time and time again, that they don’t have cookies! THE DARK SIDE IS COMPLETELY DEVOID OF COOKIES! DID HE SERIOUSLY FALL FOR THAT?! Excuse me for a moment. No, Obi-Wan, I do not have anger issues! My grandson is the DEFINITION of anger, not me! What the heck did my daughter raise…? Another great point in which I can rant about Ren is…does he even brush his hair? It’s unruly enough to hide an asyyyriak! That black mess he calls presentable is nothing more than just that—a black mess he calls presentable. And besides, if he’s on the dark side, he has to do it well. His lightsaber ISN’T EVEN WITHIN REGULATION. WHAT ARE THOSE POINTY THINGS COMING OUT OF THE SIDES AND— *Continues to rant to the room with Obi-Wan in the background, groaning for his terrible fate of rooming with me.* And that, my friends, is what grinds my gears.
You want to know what really grinds my gears?? It’s that I’m just a scavenger, and then all of a sudden a little droid appears and the whole galaxy is counting on me to save them from the First Order. I mean all I wanted to do was get back to my family, but instead I keep getting pulled around and my life is constantly in danger. I never asked to learn how to use a lightsaber or how to use The Force. I understand that the great Luke Skywalker is a legend and that this droid holds the key to finding him, but that doesn’t mean that I wanted Kylo Ren to lock me up and almost kill me. But again I wasn’t about to be held accountable for ruining the galaxy if I told him where BB-8 was. I didn’t want to die either. WHY ME? WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS? Um, nothing! I am an innocent bystander who found a droid that was being taken for its spare parts. Now being a generally nice person I helped him and that is when all of this chaos started. That is what grinds my gears. —REY

This month’s ‘What Grinds My Gears’ is turning to the dark side, as some may say. Rather than share the opinions of our very own MBMS students on generalized topics, with the new Star Wars is mind, the angry rants will be given from the perspectives of Star Wars characters. We hope you enjoy, and may the Force be with you. The Universe

You want to know what grinds my gears? *Pulls out lightsaber* YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT GRINDS MY GEARS!?! THE UNIVERSE GRINDS MY GEARS!! FOOLISH SCAVENGERS KEEPING ME FROM REACHING MY FULL POTENTIAL AS DARTH VADER’S HEIR! *Breaks control panel* FATHERS WHO PULL ME AWAY FROM MY PLACE AS RULER OVER ALL! *Force chokes three Stormtroopers* And worst of all… THAT POTTED PLANT THAT PHASMA GOT ME FOR MY BIRTHDAY!!! *Proceeds to smash everything* She knows that I prefer lilac!! She went so far as to find a magnificent Darth Vader mask as a pot. ONLY TO HAVE THE BEAUTY OF THE POT ITSELF CONTAMINATED BY THE FILTHY DAISIES! SHE’S MOCKING THE TRUE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE BY DOING SUCH A THING!! *Throws a second tantrum* General Hux, I don’t WANNA calm down. *Stomps foot* I DON’T CARE IF I’M THE CAUSE OF THE PLANET’S POWER OUTAGE! TELL PHASMA TO GET ME THE LILAC I PREVIOUSLY REQUESTED!! This is ALL THE FAULT of that scavenger scum, Rey! If she would’ve joined me on the dark side, THIS NEVER WOULDV’E HAPPENED!! I am DONE with all these cameras following me around! NO, I WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN YOUR REALITY SHOW!!! YOU ARE ALL WHAT GRIND MY GEARS!!!!!! *Throws lightsaber into the hallway, killing four bypassing civilians*
You know what grinds my gears? Solo cups. As you can already tell, the plastic product and I share a name, but I had it first. Whenever I go to the Cantina, the only question I hear is “Which solo came first; the cup or the Han?” I MEAN THAT IS THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS THING I’VE EVER HEARD!! Of course it was me, the Han. The creators of the company have never even recognized me for the free promotion I give them every time my name is mentioned!! My wife, Leia is always upset because I have all these bills to pay, but I never have money. Maybe if Solo cups gave me some sort of profit for the use of my name, I wouldn’t be so in debt all the time. It’s so low for them to do that to me (okay that’s a bad pun, but it still proves my point). BESIDES, WHY DO THEY EVEN MAKE THE CUPS RED?! DON’T THEY KNOW MY FAVORITE COLOR IS GREEN?!. Do you really want to know why Kylo uses a red light saber? Probably because he is aware of my intense revulsion for the color!! Anyways, that is what grinds my gears. —HAN SOLO

CAMBRIA BAKER
Thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy faces, a new threat from the sinister Kylo Ren and the First Order. When a defector Stormtrooper named Finn crash-lands on the desert planet Jakku, he meets Rey, a tough scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map. Together, the young duo joins forces with Han Solo to make sure the Resistance, those who oppose the First Order’s ideals, receives the intelligence concerning the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi Knights. Their efforts, however, are hampered by the notorious First Order, who creates a planet-destroying mechanism.
Breaking box office records, Star Wars VII overall was a great and exciting movie. The characters were extremely lovable, Finn and BB-8 in particular. Rey is a strong female character that goes against many archetypes, the most common ones being she doesn’t like when Finn takes her hand to run, doesn’t swoon and gasp over every straight male in the film, and takes care of the two muggers by herself. Not to mention her flying the Millennium Falcon. Now, most would cry ‘Mary Sue!’ on her achievements, but she has lots of training flying ships, as well as fighting with a large stick-like apparatus. This leads to her nearly defeating a heavily-injured Kylo Ren, as well as the aforementioned muggers. This doesn’t make her a Mary Sue character, it instead makes her strong and experienced. On top of that, when she found out that Finn was the one who decided to save her, she hugged him. IE, she didn’t kiss
him like normal Disney or any other movies would. This is huge for the Feminism movement, showing female and male characters at the same level. Now, aside from the heavy SJW (Social Justice Warrior) content, the main antagonist Kylo Ren has his own hijinks. For one thing, he looks like an awkward teenaged boy trying to be ‘emo’ or ‘goth’ instead of a Sith Lord. For another, he throws the worst and most hilarious temper tantrums. In one instance, he destroys a completely innocent and important control board right in front of his second -in-command, General Hux, and in another, he slashes a chair that once held an important captive. As for the other main protagonists, Finn and Poe, they could be, according to Disney, a canonically gay couple. If we reference an interview with the actors, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, they both said that they were playing romance characters. Disney also said that they might make them a gay couple. Overall, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a great movie with fun characters, settings, and plotlines. I would definitely recommend this movie to people who love action, hilarity, and don’t like the normal clichés.

It is predicted that in the next year alone they will total in over $5 billion in merchandise sales off The Force Awakens, which is to be expected as the series makes a large portion of its revenue off merchandise. PHOTO COURTESY OF ABC.NET.AU VIA CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE
JOSH ABBOTT The latest installment to the Star Wars series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens amazed and shook the world, with two more installments and three new spin-off series on their way in the coming years, is Disney overdoing Star Wars? Throughout the history of Star Wars creation, the merchandise has always been a hot topic and a key aspect to making the franchise what it is today. It is predicted that in the next year alone they will total in over $5 billion in merchandise sales off The Force Awakens, which is to be expected as the series makes a large portion of its revenue off merchandise. Merchandise has included everything from action figures and clothing to cereal and soup. Even going to the extremes of a Death Star waffle maker, a Chewbacca fur drink koozie, and even costumes for your pets. It all comes back to the question, is Disney really overdoing Star Wars? Well, fans are worried that with such a long list of episodes yet to come, it will diminish the magic and will burn the series out causing most

fans to get tired of it and begin to lose interest. Disney’s only hope would be for them to make them well enough so that doesn’t happen. Not to mention, Disney also will include an extreme amount of marketing for each episode as well as all new merchandise, once again offering the opportunity to burn fans and collectors out. 4-LOMtoZuckuss is a local run web-
site specifically dedicated to the discussion and collection of Star Wars merchandise such as action figures. When asked on his opinion towards the topic, webmaster of 4LOMtoZuckuss.com, Jake Stevens said he believed Disney both is and isn’t overdoing it. With over 30 years of collecting, he has witnessed countless companies

produce merchandise throughout the franchise history. “But since it is now the number one film in America and of all time, apparently they knew what they were doing,” Stevens said. Many reviews that came out not long after the release of The Force Awakens claimed it was unoriginal and was just used to make viewers feel nostalgic after seeing many members of the original cast. It’s also said to use reuse many of Episode IV’s major plot lines. George Lucas had originally written a script idea for Episode VII and given it to Disney, which had apparently never been used. George Lucas commented in an interview, “They wanted to do a retro movie. I don’t like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different plants, with different spaceships, make it new”. While it remains to be seen whether the future Star Wars releases will have the same impact and success as The Force Awakens , as it stands right now fans can’t wait to see how the next one will turn out.

CAMDEN HEILBORN During the Valentine season we all know the love comes pouring out and all the single people out there they just love to hear all about breakups. In new songs released about break-ups, you think it’s a beautiful song about them splitting for their own private personal reasons, but of course they will always love them, blah, blah, blah. It’s really a terribly-written, break up song that can be quite disturbing and gives horrendous advice. Here are a few examples. “E VERY BREATH YOU TAKE” Bad Advice: Stalk the person who broke up with you. This song was written by The Police, an English rock band that published this song in 1983. The lead singer Sting sang this and wrote it. So let me get this straight, even though that person dumped you, you need to stalk them every single second of the day? Great way to get yourself a law suit! Or to prison! The song is for sure “stinging.”

”Every breath you take and every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you, every single day and every word you say, every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you,” Sting sang. Stalker much? Thanks for the heads up, now I’ll be getting myself a personal body guard! “As Long As You Love Me” Bad Advice: If you love someone, date them even if they are a mass murderer. This song is known by Justin Bieber, but also another band that played this is Backstreet Boys. This group is an American vocal group formed in Orlando. The band published this is 1996. You’re willing to date them no matter what? Even if they’re some kind of psycho path? Little desperate, don’t you think!? “Don't care what is written in your history, as long as you're here with me, I don't care who you are, where you're from, what you did, as long as you love me,” they sang.
arts & entertainment
Ok, this scared me a little bit. You could honestly be anyone, but you know he/she loves you so you’re good to go! “DON’T SPEAK” Bad Advice: Just in case you have something really important to talk to me about, do NOT tell me. “Don’t speak” is by an American band No Doubt that formed in Anaheim, California. This song was published in 1995. The lead singer is Gwen Stefani who sang with her brother, Eric Stefani. Tony Kanal was the reason they wrote this song. Her message? Even though my parents are sick and my grandma just passed, and I really need someone to talk to, but I can’t cause it hurts YOU too much. “Don’t speak I know just what you’re saying, so please stop explaining, don’t tell me cause it hurts.” This depresses to me a little bit. “HELLO” Bad Advice: Call over and over, and over again until they are finally get annoyed enough to give in.

The oldest known love song was written 4,000 years ago and comes from an area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Whether it contained good advice is suspect. PHOTO BY C. HEILBORN
This is song that most people recognize because it was published 2015 by Adele. Most of you think it’s a beautiful written song, and
course it is, but if you really have a peak at the lyrics then it can get real interesting. His phone is probably broken from all the times you called him. I’m guessing he proba-
bly doesn’t appreciate the regular phone calls he gets at 3 AM from you. “Hello from the other side, I must have called a thousand times.” You don’t think he knows that! Word of advice, if you want her/him back, don’t call them over and over. “I DON’T TRUST MYSELF (WITH LOVING YOU)”
WENDY KALEBU, RACHEL VASILEVICH, AND MALIYAH KIM
Bad Advice: Hold onto a terrible relationship. “I Don’t Trust Myself with Loving You” is an original song published by John Mayer in 2006. He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in nearby Fairfield. His message? I’ve changed. I want to get back with you no matter what. Then I’ll breakup with you, then get together again, and finally breakup. Looks like you have a bad case of an Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt episode. Oh yeah, and also I will pretend to care for you than just again breakup with you, so don’t trust me. ANSWERS: 1.Hotline Bling 2. On My Mind 3.Same Old Love 4.Marry You 5.Photograph 6. Baby 7. ELLIE WALTER And now it’s time for the biggest football game of the year. SUPER BOWL 50. The Super Bowl will be held on Feb. 7, and the Denver Broncos will be playing the Carolina Panthers at the new 49ers facility Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Musical performances at half time include Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Coldplay. To go along with the biggest football game of the year, many people gather together to watch the
big event. Here are the things you will need for your Super Bowl to throw the best football party. SNACKS You will need to have enough food to please hungry football fans. You need the essential foods like seven layer and onion dip, chips, and make sure not to forget hot wings or pizza. “[We have] pepperoni pizza and hot wings. Sometimes a veggie tray,” Zoe Moore said.
Jack Looney also said he would eat buffalo wings. Another creative idea could be to make a football stadium out of sandwiches and veggies. Mrs. Rodgers said she had made “Cupcakes with white laces to look like footballs.” Whatever you choose, just make sure you have a lot. PARTY FAVORS No matter what team is playing, you must

have decorations. You could take the simple road with just some balloons and streamers, you could take some brown paper and make a simple football, maybe you could put up some 12 th man flags. Or you could incorporate your kids. Rodgers did the same. “Last year, my kids and I made paper chains out of Seahawks colors, and hung them up around the house,” she said. For all you extreme fans out there, you could put face and body paint on. Maybe if you have some left over fire-
GAMES WITHIN THE GAME We have all had the one person who just isn’t into football, so you need some way to “distract” them for at least 5-6 hours. You could just make them sit in their own misery while you yell at the TV for a “bad call”, or you could play some games to keep them interested in the game, like playing a scavenger hunt with all the things you would see during the game. Maybe a D-FENCE sign, someone in body paint, or iconic land marks depending where the game is being played. Then you can make it into bingo and the first to find three pictures in a row wins. Before they know you just got them to sit down and watch an entire professional football game. BUSY KIDS Now, little kids are hard to make sit still and get to do anything, let alone watch a sport they don’t know much about.
Some people still have to work on Super Bowl Sunday. That includes Domino’s Pizza, which estimates will deliver 9 million pizzas to hungry customers. The Super Bowl trophy is 20 ¾ inches and weighs about 6.7 pounds. 14 billion hamburgers will be consumed during the Super Bowl . The day after the Super Bowl is the most missed work day. One billion potato chips are consumed on Super Bowl day. 1.25 billion buffalo wings are consumed during the Super Bowl .

So there are some different options you could take. For one, you could buy them new toys or movies like Rodgers did. “I bought them new headphones and DVDs to watch during the game and gave it to them fifteen minutes before the game,” she said. What is also helpful is if they have someone else their age to play with. Start an in house game of hide-and-seek. What you’ll need to do is hide a football and some flags (colored napkins) around the house for them to find. Say something like the first to find two items wins a cupcake. Then, presto! You can now watch the game in peace. With these tips, this list should be useful for the future games. Remember, have enough food, it doesn’t take too much to decorate, play games to watch the game, and finally, keep the kiddos busy.

VARSITY BASKETBALL The varsity basketball team had a great start and finish to this season becoming 80 and staying undefeated, becoming league champions again. They had wins against Tapps (54-29, 48-28), Olympic (56-36, 4434), Rainer (47-37, 39-37), Cascade (42-32, 50-40). The second time they played Rainer, they had an unbelievable victory over Rainer with a tied game 37-37 in the fourth quarter. Rainer had the ball with 10 seconds to go on the clock until the ball got stolen by Gio Parascondola. Parascondola passed the ball to Javon Forward, who drove to the hoop with two guys on him, missed the shot. Tyler Pisha grabbed the rebound then put a shot up with 1 second left, as the buzzer sounded Pisha’s shot fell in. “I felt very pumped and excited after the game because of the steal from Gio and the

Unfortunately they lost in the second game (1-0). Marco Valdovinos said his favorite part of the season was “playing as a team.” The varsity soccer team clinched the third consecutive league title when beating Olympic 5-0. Jeremy Gregerson, Arturo Gallegos, and Hunter Williams kept the Olympic Cougars from scoring. Then, Josh Bair scored a hat trick with another goal from Joshua Morales. Neftali Garcia, Noel Trujillo-Garcia, and Valdovinos combined for the 5 assists. Arthur Melnichuk and Daniel Sanchez were outstanding defensively holding on to a shutout. The varsity team had a big improvement in the final meet placing second against the all other school in the championship. The team fought hard against the other schools with Brittany Porter (9.55) on the beam, Amber Carman (7.8) on the vault, and Tiana Troncoso (8.5) on the floor.

Math teacher Mrs. Toy in her early stages of life [LEFT] and present day [RIGHT]. COURTESY OF D. TOY AND MBMS YEARBOOK.
ADELINE MAURUS Mrs. Toy is a successful teacher here at MBMS, and was the honorary subject of our last edition’s Guess Who teaser. Growing up in the town of Forks, Washington, Toy attended Forks Elementary School. During her junior high years, she attended Meeker Junior High. While Toy was in high school, she traveled with her band to many places, as her best friend was one of the baton twirlers. When traveling, Toy assisted by lighting her friend’s batons on fire for the performances. In the ninth grade, she made the fateful decision of wanting to teach high school students. Even though she teaches sixth grade math here at MBMS, she had wanted to be a home economics teacher. “I had a home [economics] teacher that I loved,” Toy said when asked about why she became teacher, “I decided I wanted to be a home

[economics] teacher.” Starting in the year 2009, she taught home economics here at MBMS for about five years before stopping in the year 2012. However, before this she had taught eighth grade math for roughly three years. While teaching both home economics and eighth grade math, she also taught sixth grade math, which she has been doing for nine years. No matter what Toy was teaching at the time, she has certainly left a mark here at MBMS and on the students. “She taught me new skills that I didn’t know,” eighth grader Maliyah Kim said about how Toy’s home economics class impacted on her. “She taught me how to cook new things, [and] how to be a proper person at home.” Toy has impacted many students with her teaching ability. Whether it is a sixth grader, seventh grader, or eighth grader, reflecting on her teaching style and skill definitely inspires many students. Because of Toy’s remarkable teach-
*
ing skills, some students might be inspired by her to teach, just as her home economics teacher inspired her. This teacher also has left her own legacy, some of which consists of her
boys, whom she holds very dear. Students at MBMS often state that Toy treats them much like she would treat her own children, and in this way MBMS is very thankful for her.
JOCELLE PHAM The upcoming edition’s staff member is born and raised in Auburn, Washington. Growing up she went to our local schools, Cascade Middle and Auburn High. As a teen she found herself very involved with sports. She was a cheerleader for a year, and she was a high school state champion for softball. She shares her athletic spirit by coaching volleyball for the school and her daughter’s team. Roleplaying with her little brother when she was eight years’ old, she found herself over joyous being a teacher. “Every day I laugh and I love my job because of that.”
