BA(Hons) Advertising and Media

Course Outline

Advertising affects us more and more it is a key part of the creative industries . How advertisers use the media to reach customers and what they say to them is fundamentally what this course explores. The increase in satellite and cable channels, mobile phones and the Internet means you are exposed to more advertising messages than ever. More companies want to reach you and each has something different to say about their product in ways that you will find interesting. But new media technologies mean that you also have more ways to avoid these messages and so the advertisers have to be more creative in both what they say and how they say it.

This degree studies advertising in the context of media and consumer culture. It covers the practices of the advertising industry and studies the analysis and the critique of media objects, including film, television, print and new media as well as advertisements. It aims to produce professional, creative communicators and includes opportunities for professional experience: either a work placement in a media organisation or an equivalent professional live brief or project.

BA(Hons) Communication, Culture and Media Course Outline

What does it mean to live, study and work in our digital world? How has our use of online social media such as Facebook and Twitter affected our senses of personal identity and our relationships with others? How are the media and the cultural industries changing and adapting to this digital revolution and the ways in which we communicate with others? This course enables you to understand and be actively engaged in answering these questions, from your own perspective and in collaboration with local and global communities. The course provides you with an in-depth understanding of both the ways in which the media and cultural industries have developed historically and the

how these industries are adapting to and transforming themselves in the light of the current digital revolution. The course involves an integrated mix of work in which you will be producing your own media and cultural objects within a theoretical understanding of the key principles involved in these areas. You will study such areas as the Internet, social media, advertising, film, sound and music, television, video and photography, all within local, national as well as international contexts. You will investigate questions of media industries, cultural policy and the nature of media and cultural audiences.
