* Welcome * to the very first issue of petfriendly living!
T
This exciting new travel and lifestyle magazine is for people who love, and live with their pets.
I
t’s about living in a world where you consider them and their needs as much as you do your own. It’s a world where dogs and cats and other pets have as much fun as their people do, and where animal lovers get the best of everything; never having to compromise on style and comfort. In this issue, writing specifically for petfriendly living magazine, New York Times journalist, author and interior designer, Julia Szabo, teaches us how to stay stylish and still be petfriendly. Numerous studies have shown that being in the company of animals can actually help to lower our blood pressure, help us de-stress and can even keep the depression ‘monster’ at bay. Similarly, animals too enjoy both regular physical and mental stimulation and as a result, live longer. It makes sense then, to have your pets with you and around you as much as possible and to try to include them in outings and holidays. With six editions of The South African Petfriendly Directory behind us and a 7th edition due for release at the end November this year, we want to do everything we can to help you plan holidays and outings where you can take your pets along. This magazine promises to bring you all the latest petfriendly updates, four times a year, and will complement your latest edition of The South African Petfriendly Directory. Each issue will showcase different petfriendly accommodation establishments that range from a 5-star hotel on the beach to a rustic cabin in the forest, to a cottage on the edge of a cliff. We identify petfriendly places and spaces where you can walk with your dogs, from your local park, to hiking trails in the mountains. We find you places to swim with dogs, from natural rock pools to the warmth of the Indian Ocean. We suggest petfriendly venues to wine and dine at, from your favourite bar, estate or cellar, to a top class restaurant with views that will take your breath away. We also provide personal accounts, reviews and photos from avid travellers who use our annual Petfriendly Directory.
In this first issue we take you on a tour of Cape Town’s favourite petfriendly beaches. We also treat you to a sneak peek inside the Presidential Suite of The Oyster Box Hotel in Durban - where Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco recently spent a few nights – and yes, it may not be cheap but it is petfriendly! Why focus on beaches when it’s not yet summer, you may ask? Well, out of season periods are actually the ideal time for going away with pets, especially to beach destinations! There are no hordes of holidaymakers and the beaches are often your own to enjoy! It’s also not as hot, which means you can plan more activities with your pets. You may even want to join the Petfriendly Travel Club where members get discounts on just about anything, including accommodation and car hire! But let me not spoil things by giving it all away. This is our petfriendly world and we welcome you to it!
Janine

Dini and friends on the beach in Port Edward
Peaceful Paradise in Port Edward Greengates Cottage (one of BillsBest) in Port Edward, was actually our second choice. We’d spent many heavenly holidays at Whaleback Cottage in Ramsgate, but needed something a little more affordable - since it was just one couple (of people) and our four 4-legged furbabies! Well we certainly got a pleasant surprise! A large comfortable clean house (cottage made it sound small) with a huge verandah overlooking a fenced garden (doggy paradise!) and a glorious ocean view. Being higher up than at Whaleback we actually saw more of the sea… and saw dolphins and whales every single day! The weather wasn’t ideal for baking (cool, breezy and overcast) but was PAWfect for long beach walks with the dogs along huge stretches of sand. We walked early and for two or three hours and would barely see a soul, except a lone fisherman, strandloper or resident. It was as though the Pana-pack owned the entire coastline! Four little swallows made friends with my most recent rescue, a little feral dog we named Dini (as in Houdini, the escape artist). These swallows would play up and down the main beach with him, and if he lost them they would come back to find him to continue the chase! This holiday gave Dini the gift of roots (knowing he had found his forever home and family-pack) as well as wings - the freedom to sprint with the sea breeze in his hair and ripples at his toes up and down the beach; it was beautiful to behold!
Greengates has everything your heart could desire; hubby even got to watch the Rugby final on DSTV! Prudence, the housekeeper, took great care of us and was polite efficient and unobtrusive. Our only gripe is that it is so difficult to book a place… and how dumb are we, now advertising the place, so that it will be even more difficult to get in! But then again, sharing is caring and that is what Greengates is all about - this piece of peaceful paradise has something to offer everyone! REVIEW BY GUMBY & THE PANA-PACK

Jo’burg beagles’ first beach trip to Wilderness We have taken our beagles to quite a few weekend getaways and one day we headed off to Wilderness where we stayed at the Forest Lake Manor which was lovely. It is outside of Wilderness in the Langvlei dunes and was very peaceful. The flat was very comfortable for all of us and had a beautiful view of the lake and the forested dunes. It is also on a big stand which gave the beagles lots of places to explore. The sand roads in the area made for nice walks with the dogs when we couldn’t go down to the beach. The only problem that we encountered was that the owners had taken down the enclosure where we were originally told that we could put the dogs if we wanted to go out. The owners did help out by watching our dogs on the few occasions that we went out without them. As for what to do in the area with dogs: we went to Kleinkranz beach every day which was amazing for the dogs. The beach stretches as far as you can see in both directions and has very few people as it is not a swimming beach. We allowed the dogs to run off lead and watching them made the long drive more than worth it. Another win was the Steenbok Nature Reserve on Leisure Isle (Knysna). The reserve runs along the lagoon and has a little beach at one end. The dogs are allowed off lead there and ours had great fun running around and swimming in the lagoon. After their run there we went across the road to the Leisure Isle Coffee Shop which allows dogs on leads if you sit outside. I would recommend visiting this Reserve to anyone going to the area. Thanks for your help in finding places for our beagles’ first beach trip! CAROLYN CHELCHINSKEY

“Lazy like crazy” at Stone Hill in the Magaliesberg Oh yes!!! Caroline and Mark are amazing people, Stone Hill “rocks”!!! On arrival, we received the cutest little welcome gift with a box; stone inside and a card saying welcome to Stone Hill! What a very special touch! I had a wonderful chat with Caroline; she is such an interesting person. I cannot wait for Wolfgang to get time off, so we can go there again for a weekend with Gina and Nacho. It truly is so quiet there. I actually put on the television for some soft background noise, to ease myself into the quiet surroundings of the bushveld. Gina and Nacho had a wonderful relaxing time too. I saw a hot air balloon gliding gracefully in the early morning hours and two eagles soared above us while we were enjoying a healthy breakfast. Gina made friends with the Shetland Ponies, whereas Nacho was not so keen at first. We took three 15 minute walks each day and soaked up the warm winter sun on the verandah, and were lazy like crazy! The cottages are so cosy, clean and tidy. EVERYTHING is there! I told Caroline – 5 Paws she gets from us! Here are some of my favourite photos of our visit to Stone Hill. Enjoy! SEE PAGE 65... LOVE BIGGS, GINA AND NACHO
Acrabella If you’ll forgive me for ‘stealing’ from MasterCard... Dog’s chewy toy: R65 2-seater couch: R6599 Watching Bella jump for kelp: PRICELESS At the chewy stage of puppyhood, Bella and Pippin worked their way through one couch, three cellphone chargers, one TV remote, and at least seven pairs of shoes. And that was just for starters. The only way we could try and stem this daily tide of destruction was to take our two darlings for daily runs on the beach. It was here that Bella’s true colours came out. What started as a game of tug-of-war with a piece of kelp quickly turned into an acrobatics display. We encouraged this wholeheartedly because it meant that, instead of running endlessly, we could stand and twirl some kelp around our heads and the dogs would get exercised (Pippin also jumped but never quite with the enthusiasm of his sister). But the advantage of the beach for walking dogs doesn’t stop there. They don’t pick up ticks and fleas, there’s space for them to get into a real sprint, there are no cliffs to fall over, no snakes, and they don’t get muddy. Of course, if your dogs are water babies like mine, you’ll need a good stack of old towels to prevent the wet-dog smell, but it’s a small price to pay for all that sand, sea, and fun.
Snuggles takes to the streets of Clarens! I frequently go on road trips with my miniature maltese poodle, Snuggles. She is a wonderful travel companion, very well-behaved and accustomed to dining in restaurants (when allowed of course). On our way back home from Cape Town on the 29th of December, Snuggles was clearly exhausted after a very active holiday in Langebaan. Somewhere between Touwsriver and Beaufort West, she could no longer continue her duties as navigator. I hope you enjoy the photo! I bought your Petfriendly Directory previously and it was very helpful. I’m not sure if you include restaurant information in your latest edition but if not, it may be worth considering. There are many restaurants in the smaller towns that are happy to let your dog join you provided you sit at an outside table and your dog is well-behaved of course. This information is quite helpful as Snuggles no longer has to sit in the car with the window open while I have a hurried meal. Here is another photo of Snuggles, this time on holiday in Clarens in the Free State. ELMARIE STODART

TRAVEL
Beach Bums Dog behaviourist, trainer and avid walker, Taryn Blyth, along with Wyatt, Judah and Rosie, take us on a tour of some of their favourite petfriendly beaches in Cape Town.
B
eaches provide opportunity for many enjoyable doggy activities such as running, playing, sniffing new and interesting things (and rolling in really smelly stuff!), fetching, digging, swimming and even socialising. Most dogs seem to perk up immediately at the prospect of a walk on the beach and my three even start whimpering in excitement when they recognise that the car is headed in that direction! My dogs adore beach walks and in fact, a friend recently commented while watching my youngest dog, Rosie, enthusiastically alternating between digging holes and fetching her ball from the water, that she was “just like a kid at the seaside! For those of us lucky enough to live on the Cape Peninsula, there are quite a few beaches to choose from that are dogfriendly and these beaches make excellent outings for the whole family. Here follow some of our favourites:

Noordhoek Beach One of the largest and longest beaches on the Peninsula, Noordhoek beach will appeal to anyone who likes a good, long beach walk, giving you and your dogs the opportunity to stride out and get some really good exercise. You can even walk all the way to Kommetjie if you have the energy! It is best to park at the Noordhoek side of the beach in the car park at the end of Beach Road and then follow the designated path onto the beach. The beach is managed by Table Mountain National Park and certain rules apply as to where dog walkers may go, so taking note of signage is very important. Dogs are allowed all the way along the beach below the high water mark off the lead, but are required to be on lead above this area to minimise conflict with birdlife which may congregate around the water at the back of the beach. During the breeding season of ground-nesting birds a high-lying section of beach beyond the Kakapo wreck is closed completely. Dog walkers must be aware that the beach is also used by horse riders and you will need to keep an eye and ear out for their approach to prevent dogs from chasing them or taking fright. Because of the vast area the beach covers and the fact that it is bordered largely by uninhabited bush and wetland, it can become quite isolated and it is therefore advisable to always walk in groups.

Where to eat in Noordhoek? Take a drive to Noordhoek Main Road where you will find Noordhoek Farm Village, a quaint country-style estate with a number of shops and restaurants. Most have outside seating areas where pets are welcome. Café Roux, situated in Weltevreden Farmhouse on the estate, serves great food for people and their pets. They even have a special “Menu for Pets”. +27 21 789 2538 There is also The Food Barn, a popular delicatessen and restaurant. +27 21 789 1966

Where to stay in Kommetjie?
Kommetjie Beach (Long Beach) Long beach is a very popular surfing spot, but the number of surfers who use the area may well be outnumbered by the dog walkers! It is very unusual to go to Long Beach and not meet at least one other person with a dog. Many are locals who live in the houses and neighbourhoods close to the beach, but many also travel from further away to give their canine family members an enjoyable outing. Long Beach lies between the car park off Benning Drive (from here the beach extends to the right) and the car park at the end of Wireless Road (walk to the left). You can also walk to the right from the Wireless Road car park and all the way to Noordhoek along the beach. The section between the car park and Noordhoek Beach features some lovely rock pools and is a very pretty area to walk along. Dog walkers at Long Beach are usually a fairly relaxed bunch and it is rare to see a dog on the lead. It is a great beach if you like your dog to socialise with other dogs. Kommetjie has many interesting areas to walk in and if you take a drive to Van Imhoff Way you can walk along the path at the front of “Outer Kom” and all the way to the Klein Slangkop Lighthouse.

Did you know? “Kommetjie” is derived from the old Dutch word for “little bowl” or “little cup”, and usually signifies a small depression in the ground, commonly seen in parts of the African veld. In this instance, it refers to Kommetjie’s natural tidal pool where people have enjoyed safe, sheltered swimming since the early 1800s.
Where to eat in Kommetjie? Bluewater Café at Imhoff Farm allows you to sit with your dog at tables on the rolling lawns under the trees. +27 21 783 2007

Fish Hoek Beach
Scarborough Beach
Fish Hoek Beach is divided into two sections: the Fish Hoek end of the beach which is a “no dog” zone and the Clovelly end of the beach where dogs are allowed. You can park either in the main beach parking area (permits or prepaid parking may apply during the summer season) or at the Clovelly end of the beach right next to the traffic lights on the main road. Please take care when crossing the railway line at this end of the beach and keep dogs on the lead until well away from it. The dog walking area of Fish Hoek beach is fairly small in comparison to Noordhoek or Kommetjie, but it is certainly adequate for a good walk and provides plenty of opportunity for your dog to fetch a ball and meet other dogs. The beach is best at low tide, as the area above the high water mark is very narrow and fairly steep to walk along. The water at Fish Hoek is usually nice and warm in summer, but if you or your dog are going to swim, please be sure to pay attention to the shark warning flags and be sure to instantly obey any instructions to get out of the water! For those who would like to extend the beach walk, you can leave the beach at the Clovelly end with your dog on lead, cross the main road and walk around the pathways of the Clovelly Wetlands, an area which has been replanted with indigenous fynbos and turned into a very attractive place to stroll and watch water birds.
Scarborough is a very pretty beach that is used mainly by local residents when it comes to dog walking, although when the holiday makers arrive in summer, they often have the canine family members in tow as well! The main car park for the beach is at the end of Camel Rock Road. The main beach to the left of the car park is managed by Table Mountain National Park. Dogs are allowed off lead on the beach (must be on lead in the car park) and it is very rare to see a leashed dog in the area! Scarborough beach is a fairly quiet place to walk most of the year (summer weekends and holidays can be rather busy!) and local dog walkers (and their dogs!) are generally friendly and laid back. In winter the Shuster’s River flows into the sea and creates a lagoon which dogs and kids love to play in! The river itself is very attractive while it is flowing and provides a good swimming spot for dogs where it comes out onto the beach. This is a lovely route for dogs and a very popular one with local dog owners. However, it is very important to be careful of wildlife in the area: Baboons may be encountered at Schusterskraal, as well as otters in the river or on the beach (mainly at dusk and dawn); seals on the rocks; and cobras, puff adders and mole snakes anywhere around the Point!

What to take along to the beach: A lead for each dog: even if your dog is extremely well-behaved, it is only responsible to have a lead with you for emergencies. No dog should be walked along a busy road without a leash and car parks are also not safe places for dogs to run around freely. Despite the safety aspect, many dogs are often so excited when they arrive at the beach that they will jump out and dash off after the first thing they see – rather keep your dog on a lead until you have everything together; have seen who and what is around and have made sure that your dog is out of the way of traffic or anything else that you would prefer him/her to stay away from. Don’t allow your dogs to go up to other dogs that are leashed – leads can really complicate social interactions and it’s asking for trouble! Plastic bags for picking up after your dog: The most powerful ammunition in the hands of people who would like to ban dogs from beaches altogether is owners who don’t pick up after their dogs! Treats: Every outing is a training opportunity. Rewarding your dog with a treat for coming when called or sitting to have the lead put on or taken off will help to establish good manners. Fresh water: Running and playing on the beach is thirsty work and many dogs will even to try to drink sea water! Make sure that you always have water in the car to give your dog before you make the hot trip home. Toys: Dogs that fetch balls or other toys on walks tend to stay closer to their owners and are less likely to get into trouble chasing birds or following other dog walkers! Towel: No one likes a wet and sandy dog in the car! Camera: You have to have photos of your dog having fun!

Table Mountain National Park Activity Card For beaches managed by Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), dog walkers are now required to have a Dog Walking Activity Card. The fee for such a card is R145 per person and each person in the family has to have their own card to walk the dog. This is understandably a bone of contention with many locals and the park has agreed in talks with Friends of the Dog Walkers to reduce the financial burden on dog owners by introducing “couples” cards and possible special local resident cards. However, this was several months ago and there is no sign that the park is going to keep its word at this stage. If you want to purchase an activity card, you will need two ID photos when you apply for one at the TMNP offices. Please request that the park issue you with a Code of Conduct brochure when purchasing your card. They will require you to sign an agreement to their terms and so it is important that you have a copy of them. RULES & REGULATIONS: Rules governing dogs in public spaces seem to change all the time and finding out exactly what restrictions apply is no mean feat. The City of Cape Town’s regulations governing the walking of dogs on beaches varies according to the time of year. Popular beaches like Camps Bay, Clifton and Hout Bay only permit people to walk leashed dogs in season (1 November – 30 April) from 6pm – 9am, and only on certain parts of the beach. Out of season (1 May – 31 October), dogs are allowed at any time, but must be leashed. You absolutely MUST pick up the poop at all times! petfriendly living

Guest input has resulted in Ducktree Cottage being awarded the coveted National AA Award of the Best Self-Catering Cottage in 2005. This standard is still maintained. Ducktree Cottage has been described by guests as a “magical stay.” Another wrote: “We had a blast – fantastic! The dogs really enjoyed it.” Other comments include: “Fantastic breakaway (too short). Another exciting walk (an alternative to walking on the beach) is Clearwater Trails, situated 7km inland from Port Edward on the edge of the Umtamvuna Gorge, and ending at the Trail Centre, with a restaurant, gallery and a gift shop! Jan and Natalie Abbott have created a dog walking trail as an addition to their well established mountain biking, jogging and walking trails. This trail, dedicated to dog walkers, has proved very popular with locals and visitors alike and covers a distance of approximately 2kms through farmland and a section of indigenous bush. The trail passes over the wall of a small farm dam and some dogs like to splash in the relatively cool water on very hot days. After the walk, dogs are welcome to sit with their owners at the fully licensed Taverna restaurant. Water and a dog biscuit are offered to replenish your hound while you enjoy your refreshments.

he petfriendly offering at The Oyster Box allows clients to enjoy their stay at the hotel along with their favourite canine and feline friends. The hotel’s superior garden villas accommodate both guests and pets. The offering includes special pet menus, linen and sleeping baskets, all as luxurious as the hotel’s human offering. In addition, The Oyster Box hotel’s customary warm welcome is also extended to pets upon arrival – consisting of a stylish collar and water bowl gift set. Petfriendly services also include dog-walkers and collection and delivery to the parlour. Hospitality industry doyenne Bea Tollman, who loves travelling with her dogs, felt that the petfriendly concept should be standardised across all three luxury Red Carnation Hotel Collection properties: The Oyster Box, Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat and The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa – to create a home-away-from-home for their guests. Wayne Coetzer, GM for The Oyster Box, comments: “As one of South Africa’s most distinguished hotels and part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, we have to consider all of our guests’ needs and accommodation requirements, and what better way than to include their beloved pets? It’s easy to see why our hotel is a leader in the industry and the first choice among discerning holidaymakers. Not only do we take every accommodation desire into account, but we also create trends and benchmarks in the industry. The petfriendly concept is just another way that we can add to your travel adventures.” Should you wish to share the joy of a stay at The Oyster Box with your pet-pals please let us know when you make your reservation. A deposit will be requested upon arrival, but this will be happily returned to you at the end of your stay.”
Old fashioned classic style and glamour abound at The Oyster Box hotel in Umhlanga Rocks. Impeccable taste and comfort are hallmarks of this prestigious establishment. Decorater and designer, Toni Tollman, assisted her mother Bea with creating the impressive interiors of the tastefully refurbished and revamped Oyster Box Hotel. According to the Tollmans, one of the greatest challenges faced was restoring this iconic hotel in a way that was authentic to when it was built in 1947. As a result much of the inspiration for the décor was taken from the original features of the hotel and design elements from the 1940s and 1950s are reflected in the elegant furnishings and décor. CAN DESIGN HELP SAVE A PET’S LIFE?
C
an design help save a pet’s life? I say, absolutely it can. In 2001, I wrote a book called Animal House Style: Designing a Home to Share with Your Pets. A lot of people thought my idea to combine companion animals and interior design in one volume was so cute! They laughed it, and me, off. But the subject of pets and design is serious.
Two compelling phenomena prompted me to write the book, one happy and one sad. First the good news: As a design reporter writing about people’s homes for The New York Times, House Beautiful, and other prestige publications, I noticed that the most inviting, elegant homes had not just one, but several pets in residence. Too often, people assume that if someone has even one dog or cat, that person’s home must be a filthy mess. Yet the house-proud pet lovers I met proved that stereotype wrong. Their pets had all-access passes, yet their homes were stylish and spotless. Like me, those pet-loving people were more likely to sit on the floor and yield the furniture to their dogs! Now for the sad part: When I became deeply involved in pet rescue, I learned that one of the most common reasons given for surrendering an animal companion is appalling to anyone with a functioning heart: “Because it wrecked the furniture.” First off, animals are not “its”. And in my humble opinion, if an item of furniture could be wrecked so easily, then that wasn’t the pet’s fault - it was the person’s for choosing the wrong “breed” of furniture! To prove that a house just isn’t a home without at least one pet in residence, I got to work researching petfriendly home furnishings. Some tough customers needed extra convincing that an animal house could indeed be the most stylish home in the hood. These were the holdouts who resisted adopting a pet because they feared doing so would mess up their pretty homes. My priority was to dispel the myth that shelter pets are “dirty”, so I highlighted the animal houses with gorgeous, adopted mutts (feline as well as canine). My book was published in September 2001, shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Centre. After this national tragedy that was felt around the world, people began to value their own pets, and pets in general, more. The heroism of the search-and-rescue
K9s who worked at Ground Zero got under everyone’s skin, as did the selflessness of the therapy dogs who brought comfort to fire-fighters’ and victims’ families. We gained new appreciation of dogs as extraordinary beings who are most certainly not disposable. Later, another tragedy would again remind us that home is where the pets are. In 2005, during Hurricane Katrina, the world wept to see evacuees in New Orleans forced to leave beloved pets behind, and animal shelters operating beyond maximum capacity to house homeless pets. Since then, we all take time to enjoy our pets to the fullest, inviting them to join us on the sofa and in bed every chance we get. Awareness of pet adoption has also increased, with animal shelters finally emerging as the first and best place to find the family pet. My latest book, Pretty Pet-Friendly: Easy Ways to Keep Spot’s Digs Stylish and Spotless picks up where Animal House Style left off. It offers detailed information on exactly how to create and maintain the prettiest, pet-friendliest digs. Because black animals - especially large, dusky dogs are always the last to be adopted, I proudly placed Tiki, my charistmatic Chow-Rottweiler cross, and Kitty, my tuxedo cat, front and centre on the book’s cover. My friends and I are pictured sitting on a cool chrome chair by Thayer Coggin, (www.thayercoggin.com) its super-sturdy metal frame encasing upholstery that’s as durable as it is divine to the touch (it’s a faux suede by Crypton in a pale blue called Icing). Pets are natural-born decorators. Any rescued pet, regardless of breed or type, size or stripe, will gladly work - for free! - as your live-in interior designer and style “grrru”. S/he will let you know which home furnishings and accessories work, and which ones don’t. How do pets communicate their instinctive design know-how? By voting with their feet, of course! My goal in publishing Pretty Pet-Friendly was to give readers the information and resources they need to harness the transformative power of design. I hope this knowledge - and the sheer fun of decorating a petfriendly nest - will inspire everyone who sees my book, or reads an excerpt, to visit their local animal shelter and adopt. That’s how design can save pets’ lives.

SEVEN TIPS FOR A PRETTY, PETFRIENDLY HOME
1
Use Mythic Paint which is completely non-toxic and VOC-free. With other paints, you need to remove pets from the premises until the walls have dried completely but Mythic is safe to use even while pets are in the house. Plus, it’s available in a glorious rainbow of gorgeous colours, which is great news for design hounds. www.mythicpaint.com
SOUTH AFRICAN SUBSTITUTE: Local paint manufacturers like Plascon and Dulux have ‘green’ paint ranges available. www.plascon.co.za l www.dulux.co.za
2
When choosing furniture, look for designs that are sturdy and durable, to withstand years of being pounced upon by dogs and/or cats. Skip the spindly-legged settees; your sofa and chairs should resemble a bulldog more than a greyhound! When dressing your bed, arm the mattress with several strong protective layers (hint: I use a moisture-resistant mattress protector and two fitted sheets).
3
Upholster with durable, stain- and odour-resistant Crypton Super Fabric, which looks stylish and feels inviting to the touch, yet stands up remarkably well to pouncing paws. The solids come in a range of luscious colours, while the dynamic patterns were created by world-renowned dog artist William Wegman. www.cryptonfabric.com
SOUTH AFRICAN SUBSTITUTE: MOBELLI: Creating sophisticated and comfortable outdoor spaces need not cost the earth. The Mediterranean range from Mobelli offers outdoor style at an unbelievable price. This cost effective range is made from sturdy, scratch resistant, powder coated aluminium frames with technowood arm rests and Batyline sling. Constructed from a polyester fibre with a polymer coating, Batyline sling, which is produced by Ferrari, is snag proof, fast drying and flame retardant. This hard wearing range of furniture is ideal for pet owners! The range consists of lounge suites, sun loungers, and dining chairs. The Mediterranean range is stackable, making it easy to store. www.mobelli.co.za
SOUTH AFRICAN SUBSTITUTE: SUNBRELLA: For a brand that started out as an industrial-grade awning fabric in only six colours, Sunbrella fabrics have come a long way since their launch in 1961. Advances in technology and various innovations have resulted in Sunbrella being used in a variety of beautiful new products that offer creative solutions for consumers and the décor and design community. Sunbrella fabrics are ideal for outdoor living and cushions can be left outdoors all year long. The fabrics are fade-resistant and stand up to the harshest sun and the most dramatic weather Mother Nature can muster. Using Sunbrella means you never have to compromise style for performance. The added bonus – stains from pets and kids can easily be cleaned without damaging the fabric, which has been designed for carefree living with colour that is locked in. Today’s Sunbrella fabrics are available in a variety of patterns and designs, including ikats, florals, intricate stripes, houndstooth and more. From the latest hot pink to spa blue, chocolate browns and everything in between, there is a Sunbrella fabric available in the perfect colour for any decorating need. www.sunbrella.com

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A RESPONSIBLE CONSUMER?
Whether you are purchasing for yourself, the family or your
companion animals, be responsible. In the case of our pets they have no say, they have no voice. They are
reliant on your informed choice and thus the responsibility is that much more severe and binding.

* THE RESPONSIBLE
PET OWNER IS A RESPONSIBLE
CONSUMER by Paul Jacobson of Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition
O
ur modern era has become materialistic, insensitive and careless. We have steered away from good business and moral ethics and we have distanced ourselves from natural living. In this hectic lifestyle convenience has become a priority with processed, preserved and chemical based products enjoying major support. Corporate business embarks on major advertising campaigns that cloud our clear thinking. Labelling of products is obscure and illegible. So, if ever there was a need to investigate and challenge the commercial institution, it is now. As a responsible consumer and pet owner, I believe that we should commit to three unconditional pledges in order to derive at a clear decision. Firstly, we should step back from all the different opinions and marketing jargon and use our common sense, intuition and logic. We should apply our minds and think carefully and honestly. Secondly, we should rely on the wealth of information available in print and in the electronic media. Search engines allow us to comfortably sit at our computer and study the facts comprehensively. Thirdly, and this is probably the most challenging, is to scrutinise labels. It is imperative, as responsible consumers, that we understand the list of ingredients and feeding guidelines that are labelled on our food and on our household products. This is for the protection of our family and companions. I believe only then can we claim to be responsible and enlightened consumers. I have been commissioned to write regularly for petfriendly living and in doing so I will present content that is challenging and that deserves research. I will introduce to you the legalities of labelling in the pet food industry and how important it is to understand diet, pet care, grooming and behaviour. The consequences of irresponsible pet care will have an impact on your companions’ wellbeing, health and longevity. True enlightenment means understanding all the façades of our material, emotional and spiritual world. The enlightened person applies the same moral principles when approaching life and its challenges. The merits of these principles are judged on truth alone and not according to race or being. We apply these same truths to humans as we do animals. Animal rights organisations, worldwide, are fighting to change the rhetoric describing our animals as “pets” to “companion animals” or “members of the family”. Perhaps then, all our animals will be treated fairly, morally and with dignity. Then, we can truly call ourselves complete and enlightened.

ogs are my passion. I have loved animals for as long as I can remember and have always wanted to save every animal that needed saving. I used to walk the dogs in the rescue organisations who were locked in cages for most of the day and try to make them more adoptable. I used to help catch feral cats and have them sterilised, if there was any chance that I could domesticate them, I would, and try to find a good home for them, the rest we would put back where we found them. I would take on foster dogs and cats and as soon as they were physically and

emotionally strong, I would start looking for the perfect homes for them. This is one of the reasons I have 6 dogs and 6 cats, because some I could not let go. What does an animal behaviourist do? It all starts with understanding the dog psyche and their pack instinct, so that we can competently treat dogs that have behaviour problems. As with everything in life, a calm approach with positive re-enforcement works best. and their dogs, so that they can fully enjoy each other’s company. I get called in to people’s homes to sort out problems like aggression towards other dogs, aggression towards people, barking, chewing, digging, separation anxiety etc. Most of the time it is the owners who are not doing the right thing. You do not get such a thing as a bad dog, just an owner who does not know the correct way. More often than not, I am called in for issues that the owners have already tried to resolve on their own. Owners commonly hope that their dog will grow out of a bad habit, but truth be told, unless deliberately coached and coaxed, dogs become more entrenched in their habits as time goes by (just like us two legged mammals). Owners often reinforce their dogs’ problematic behaviour without even knowing it and then the dog gets blamed for getting it wrong. For a relatively small expense and a dedicated amount of commitment, beneficial changes can easily be made. It’s really not true that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Dogs learn quickly; it’s the owners that are sometimes a little slow. The exciting thing about what I do is the diversity of issues that I’m called to consult on. Diverse issues call for diverse solutions and for this reason I’m never militant in my approach. Meeting you and your dog will give me a chance to consider first and foremost, the needs of the owner. I tap into you and your disposition to find a sustainable solution that will work well for you and your four-legged best friend. To an equal degree, I consider the needs of the dog. No two breeds are alike and no two dogs within a breed can be considered the same. There is no paint-by-numbers solution and I always, always, always take into account each individual dog’s temperament so that I suggest something that we’re all comfortable with. Another factor I will consider is the environment. This pertains not only to your home but also to the general space that you share with your dog. This isn’t just about where your dog sleeps and the four walls that you share, it’s about the garden, it’s about the perimeter and it’s about the immediate surrounds. It also includes the space that your dog thinks s/he “owns”. In my experience, dogs that are integrated into the home are more secure, calm and “playable” than dogs that are made to “live outside”. If I have to choose a key message to owners, it would be this: at the end of the day, it will be you that is left with the dog once I leave. I can only give you guidelines that will empower you to bring about changes - the onus will be on you to consistently implement them. Of course, I’m happy to provide ongoing support, but ultimately it is up to you to create the environment you desire. Your confidence is vital to a long-term solution. A confident owner equals a calm dog; a calm dog equals a happy home. I derive great personal rewards from my work and can talk to dogs for hours, so please feel free to give me a call or send me an email. It’s my passion and gives me endless joy to see families engaging with their dogs in a loving and successful way.

With a strong background in catering which included making food for British Royalty alongside the likes of Jamie Oliver, restaurant owner, Jayne, feels that too often the issue is about convenience versus work. As she puts it: “maybe there is a place for some of the new culinary machines and gadgets on the market, but for the most part, the making of really good food is in the being there; the hands on and head first into that box of fresh, not frozen, vegetables; to wash and to peel, to dice and to julienne, by hand. Here at Infood we like the old ways, which is why our bread is so good. We don’t employ the convenience of pre-mix dough in our breads, but rather use the ten thousand year old way of baking our breads and rolls from scratch, and wherever possible, employing the same with everything we do at InFood.” InFood is very petfriendly and has a lovely garden with dog water bowls all over. We highly recommended you stop by for some of Jayne’s delicious artisan-made, chemical-free breads, and a cup of real barista-made coffee. Reader’s Recommendation Uitkyk Hike
NEAR HARTBEESPOORT One weekend we really wanted to go hiking with the dogs but struggled to find somewhere close to Johannesburg. Eventually, we found the Uitkyk hike through the Jacana Collection. Uitkyk Hike is a lovely day walk close to Hartebeespoort. The hike is about 7km long and although steep in parts, it’s not too difficult. Our dogs loved running through the trees at the start of the hike and then along the cliffs at the top to get a better view. There are spectacular views from the summit. To the south is the vast spread of the Dam and on the southern skyline the city of Johannesburg can be seen. To the west you can see the Magaliesberg mountain range. Extending northwards are vistas of the Brits valley with their mix of agricultural and mining activities. It was really wonderful to find somewhere close to home to be able to do a hike with our beagles. This hike is well worth it! Eikendal Vineyards is situated in the foothills of the spectacular Helderberg mountains, on the R44, between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. It truly is the most perfect location for a petfriendly picnic and there is even a hiking trail through the fynbos that you can follow with your dogs. Nelson Wine Estate stands upon one of the first pieces of land to be selected for making wine by the French Huguenots. Nelson Wine Estate is a family wine farm in every sense of the word where most of the members of the Nelson family are involved in the running of the business in one way or another. The Nelsons love animals, especially dogs and horses. In order to help the local (Wellington) SPCA raise funds to set up a sanctuary for abused farm animals and horses, they hosted their first ever Wine, Dine & Dog Day held in December 2011 with the event set to become an annual fundraiser. The Wine Dine & Dog Day offers many activities catering for dogs, including a “Fluffie Draffie” (dog run/walk), a first ever cross country for dogs, various displays and exhibitions and even an obedience obstacle course open for all dogs to attempt. Dog owners were treated to good food, fine dining and the opportunity to stroll with their dogs through the vineyards and swim in the farm dam.
Bilton Wines, situated in Annandale Road, Stellenbosch, host dog walks on a quarterly basis. cope with stress...
HOW HERBS CAN HELP ANIMALS
by Dr Jimmy Symmonds & Cara Harris
Animals are happy and healthy by nature. However, modern living can be stressful, making it tricky for animals to truly experience their natural wellbeing.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
W
hen animals perceive danger, their response is called the stress-response. In an animal’s natural environment the stress-response (also called the fight-or-flight response) has an important purpose. When threatened, the stress-response provides animals with the means to respond quickly and effectively to the threat, and helps ensure their survival. It is easy to see how the stress-response is beneficial in natural environments, when an animal may need to escape a predator, or protect its young. Once the danger has passed, or the challenge has been met successfully, then animals naturally return to a relaxed state. However, stress that continues over an extended period, even at low levels, can be detrimental to an animal’s health. Many animal diseases and behaviour problems are now understood to be stress-related. Long-term stress means an animal may never get the chance to fully relax. The ability to relax is essential for animal wellbeing, as relaxation allows for optimal healing, and a return to normal, balanced functioning. Herbs that have an effect on the nervous system have traditionally been called nervines. One class of nervine herbs in particular is useful in supporting stressed animals, and helping them to relax. These herbs are called nervine relaxants, and they help to relax the mind and body through their action on the nervous system. Modern science can now explain many of the effects of these herbs. Research into the functioning of nerves at a molecular level has led to the discovery of a number of important chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that can be affected by herbs. These chemical messengers all play different roles in the balanced functioning of the central nervous system. One of these neurotransmitters, called GABA, plays a central role in a relaxed nervous system. Research has shown that many herbs traditionally classified as nervine relaxants, exert their relaxing effects by promoting the function of GABA. Herbs that help
animals relax, through their effects on GABA, include Chamomile, Passionflower, Lemon balm and Valerian. Of course a herb has more than just one effect. In fact herbs often contain hundreds of chemicals that have a variety of effects. Choosing an appropriate herb involves looking at all the effects of a herb and matching it to the signs and symptoms seen in the animal. Chamomile flowers, for example, not only help relax the nervous system, but also help promote a healthy digestive function. Chamomile would then be a good choice in animals that experience minor digestive upsets when stressed, including excessive flatulence, poor appetite, or even diarrhea. When used appropriately, and as part of an integrated approach to wellbeing, relaxing herbs can provide useful support for stressrelated problems in animals. Because herbs have real effects it is always important to consult your veterinarian if your animal is on medication, pregnant, lactating or undergoing surgery before using any herbs. If you have an animal that you feel has a stress-related problem then the first step is to get the support of your veterinarian and an animal behaviourist. Herbal relaxants are most effective when combined with other relaxation strategies that are tailored to the individual animal. Every animal gets stressed for different reasons and shows their stress in different ways. A trained expert can help you to better understand your animal’s condition, what they need, and what you can do to help. Jimmy & Cara are directors of Happiness Is – a social enterprise creating products and workshops that promote the wellbeing of animals. Jimmy’s background includes zoology, veterinary medicine and herbal medicine. Cara’s background includes neuropsycology and animal behavioural science. HEALTH & WELLNESS HOW HERBS CAN HELP ANIMALS
cope with stress...
Happy Animal Clinic >> A Cape Town based Referral Service for Mind-Body Veterinary Medicine
About Happy Animal Clinic Experience and science has shown Jimmy and Cara the relationship between an animal’s mind and body. When an animal worries or experiences stress, his/her mind and immune system are eventually affected, causing or intensifying a range of physical, mental and/or behavioural disorders. In fact, an animal’s emotional and physical wellbeing are so interconnected they cannot be addressed in isolation.
What is Mind-Body Veterinary Medicine? Mind-Body Veterinary Medicine offers an integrated approach for maintaining your companion animal’s health and wellbeing and assisting in healing from more serious disease and/or behavioural challenges. Mind-Body Veterinary Medicine explores the complex interconnections between an animal’s mind and his/her body’s nervous and immune system. It offers an interdisciplinary approach incorporating Jimmy and Cara’s backgrounds in behavioural science, veterinary medicine, neurophysiology, psychology and herbal medicine.
Their Approach
How to book a consultation Clients can call either Jimmy or Cara to make an appointment. Feel free to call us to discuss the suitability of a case for referral. We require a referral from your family vet, as well as a full medical history and all lab results.
Happy Animal Clinic
Cara and Jimmy consult together and work in partnership with clients and referring vets to find ways to ease animal suffering and promote wellbeing. They currently offer home visits in Cape Town and surrounding suburbs. Clients can look forward to personalised programs and treatment modalities that include pharmaceutical medicines, herbal medicines, acupuncture, behavioural counselling, massage, lifestyle advice etc.
When to book a consultation Happy Animal Consultations can assist in: • Stress-related disorders, e.g. skin allergies, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome • Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders, e.g. epilepsy, chronic pain, frailty • Behavioural disorders e.g. inappropriate urination, aggression, lick granuloma • Cancer • Old Age conditions • Convalescence - to promote optimal healing after serious illness or surgery Such cases suggest there may be a role for a Mind-Body approach that looks at the various stressors involved (including psychological, environmental and relationship stressors) in the disease presentation.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Relief REIKI
By Carol Mulrooney
A NATURAL STRESS RELIEVER FOR HUMANS AND ANIMALS
Y
ou wake up one day, and the memories of your seaside holiday have faded like your well-worn denim jeans. You realise with a sinking heart that your days of relaxation are long over and it’s on with the proverbial grindstone. Instantly your whole body tenses as a tsunami dumps gigantic waves of stress over you. Stress is one of the main causes of illness in the body, mind and spirit of both humans and animals. As our animal companions share a close bond with us, they are adept in picking up on our emotional and mental state. They also have the ability to mirror back at us issues that need healing in our lives. If you’re depressed or worried the chances are your cat/dog/horse will display similar health and/or behavioural problems. In such cases, both the person and the animal would benefit from a Reiki treatment. All living beings possess an energy system through which life force energy flows. The chakras (a Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel of light’) circulate life force energy through the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Energy meridians that make their way around the entire body are connected to the nervous system and transport the life force energy. Negative thoughts and emotions like fear, stress, anger, worry etc. disrupt the energy flow throughout the body and cause blockages in the chakras that ultimately manifest as disease in humans and animals.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
A NATURAL STRESS RELIEVER FOR HUMANS AND ANIMALS
- What is Reiki? Universal life force energy is the energy that flows through humans, animals, plants and all living things. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a natural method of hands on healing that utilises this energy to promote health and wellness. Dr Mikao Usui of Kyoto, Japan rediscovered this form of healing in the 19th Century. It comprises two Japanese words; Rei – meaning higher power and Ki – meaning spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki never replaces veterinary or medical treatment or medication, but the two complement each other, affording greater and/or speedier healing.
- How can Reiki help? Reiki can assist in clearing such blockages. Reiki treatments range from an hour to an hour and a half for people. During a Reiki session the client lies fully clothed on the therapy bed, under a light cover. The qualified Reiki practitioner places her hands in specific positions on the body. The practitioner merely acts as a conduit as she channels Universal energy, which flows from the hands directly to the source of the problem. The energy is experienced as a tingling sensation, accompanied by heat that is generated over the affected area. This is very soothing and has a calming and relaxing effect, causing some people to drift off to sleep or enter a deep state of relaxation. Animals seem to prefer hour-long treatments in the garden or on the verandah, where they can take a break to relieve themselves and return for more Reiki if they want it. Most animals relax and enjoy their session, often going off to sleep, while others will rearrange their bodies in such a way that the energy is directed to where they need it most. Regular Reiki treatments promote health and wellbeing. Illnesses can be detected on an energetic level and cleared before they manifest in the physical body. As Reiki heals on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level, it’s perfect for assisting with the healing of emotional and mental problems, giving us the opportunity to live healthy, stressfree lives along with our animal companions.
A Reiki session is relaxing and calming which must be experienced to be fully appreciated.

pet’s name?
These days, when it comes to naming our pets, it’s goodbye Fifi and
Fluffy and hello Emma and Oscar!
A
key pattern today is naming our pets the same names that are popular choices for human babies. Researchers link this to the general ‘humanisation’ trend that is emerging in contemporary pet-keeping, specifically in western influenced societies.
This trend has taken hold in South Africa as well. In the past, dogs were given names like Spotty, Snoopy, Fluffy, Rex and Wagter. These days we prefer Max, Charlie, Molly, Oliver and Sophie. This change is motivated by, amongst other things, the increased tendency to view pets as family members and as ‘surrogate humans’; as companions rather than objects of domination which the term ‘pet’ suggests. The naming of a pet is thus a way of ‘humanising’, so as to give it a unique, individual identity. By giving one’s animal a name, you attribute personality traits and individualism to them. Despite cultural variations, naming pets is common practice among pet owners everywhere. We have all heard the claim that people can resemble their pets physically and some experts argue that what you decide to name your pets, reveals much about your personality. The name you choose for your dog reveals your expectations, interests and yearnings. It can also reveal your sense of humour (if you have one). Ironic names like Killer or Danger are frequently given to tiny toy dogs like Miniature Pinschers and Poodles. Names are also age specific and teenagers in the family can result in pets being named Britney (as in Spears), Bree or Bella (as in the Vampire movies including the Twilight series). Some people give their pets mythical or historical names like Socrates, Rommel, Churchill, Napoleon, Josephine or Cleopatra
(often shortened to Cleo), or name them after famous people. For example: Tyson (as in Mike) Jimi (as in Hendrix), Elvis, and Ozzy (as in Osbourne). Rescued dogs are sometimes named after where they were found or given names that somehow marked or alluded to their ordeal. Names like Freeway and Lucky denote this type of naming. Cats are not always given human names but if they are, popular choices include: Molly, Tabitha, Penny and Jenny. Common, and fairly traditional cat names, like Tigger, Sylvester, Felix and Tommy or Thomas, are still popular. Some pets (both cats and dogs) are named after food and drink, e.g. Biscuit, Fudge, Cupcake, Jelly, Milo, Brandy, Pickle, Pumpkin and Whisky.
What’s in a name
Naming your pet has never been more of a minefield and to help you along, a few books have been published that can guide you in your choice. “The Complete Book of Pet Names: An ASPCA Book” by George Greenfield, paperback, ISBN: 9780962695018 “The Big Book of Pet Names: More Than 10,000 Pet Names (Includes Celebrity Pet Names)” by Eugene Boone, paperback, ISBN: 9780930865542 “The Best Pet Name Book Ever” by Wayne Bryant Eldridge, paperback, ISBN: 9780764124990 Available online at www.kalahari.net

TRENDS
what’s
HOT ?
in animal apparel
espite the general economic downturn, the pet industry overall is still growing at a phenomenal rate and pets are increasingly being seen as family members. They fill the void left by ‘empty nests’ and childlessness and these days it is not uncommon for people to have ‘furkids’ instead. At the same time, their elevated position and the proliferation of products and services catering for their every need has resulted in increased life expectancy for pets. Another key factor propelling and shaping the growth in the pet industry is the increased tendency to ‘humanise’ pets. Consequently, a growing segment of the pet-owning population will seek out human types of services for their pets including massage, acupuncture and hydrotherapy. This extends to pets being included in weddings and even having their own birthday parties, fashion shows, TV programmes and magazines.

Trending in Japan Although the birthrate in Japan has reached an all time low, the number of pets in that country has increased significantly. According to www.guardian.co.uk, there are now many more pets than children in Japan. In addition, their human owners are spending a fortune on designer clothing, specialised equipment, luxury accessories and pampering treatments for them. Japanese dogs can now enjoy holidays at spas and hot spring resorts, yoga classes and gourmet meals at sidewalk cafés. Pet boutiques sell everything from designer outfits, sunglasses, shoes and nappies to organic snacks and meals, to dog ‘carry bags’ or pram-like ‘buggies’ to transport them in. There are many dog hotels and pet funerals have also become available. There are even temples where dead dogs are laid to rest with full Buddhist rites. Because Japan is densely populated and space is a major issue since most people live in tiny apartments, small lapdogs like miniature dachshunds, poodles and chihuahuas are particularly popular.

PET TRAVEL
Globally, pet travel is growing and in South Africa, we are witnessing more and more people travelling with their pets. Products that facilitate pet travel such as car seat covers, hammocks, barriers, portable water bowls, carriers, crates and travel tonics (mostly of herbal origin) to prevent carsickness are becoming increasingly available. Expect more cars with petfriendly features; a wider range of holiday accommodations that cater specifically for pets; and travel agencies involved purely in the transportation of pets, with or without, their people, will all become increasingly available and popular. With more dogs on the road, garages, restaurants, wine farms, markets, shopping centres etc. will also be catering for them by providing watering holes and special menus for our four-legged companions.

BLING TO GREEN
The shift from glitzy and glam to organic, all natural and environmentally-friendly merchandise and services, has been one of the key trends for this year. From organic treats to natural shampoos and spa products; flea treatments; biodegradable dog poop bags; and more natural and healthier pet food options; this change is making its mark here in South Africa as well. The proliferation of green products and holistic healthcare options for pets is evidence of this positive trend.
3
LOCAL IS LEKKER
Top quality, (more affordable than imported) pet products and accessories are being produced right here in South Africa. Companies such as Wagworld, Superstar Paws, Dogs Unlimited, SWAG and KittiCraft are just a few companies that come to mind. At the same time, pet services are diversifying and providing many opportunities for viable selfemployment.

TRENDS PEOPLE ANIMAL
Our Pets
Our Selves part one
W
e are all very familiar with pet lovers describing
themselves as being either cat people or dog people. Some people identify strongly with a particular breed and tend to select this type of pet throughout their lives. But, what do these preferences and choices say about us and our personalities? Are you Snoopy or Garfield? In Part One of this series of articles, petfriendly living investigates…
A
survey conducted by the Associated Press in the USA found that dog lovers outnumber feline fans nearly two to one. Similar patterns can be expected in South Africa where dogs rate as the number one pet of choice for most of us. Unfortunately, many more people dislike cats. Notwithstanding the age-old association with witchcraft, in many Western (and African) societies, ‘cat people’ still tend to be portrayed more negatively and stereotypically than their dog-loving counterparts. Although an individual’s preference for dogs over cats is partly related to cultural and lifestyle differences, it also may have something to do with their own unique personality. Research conducted by American psychology professors, Sam Gosling, Carson Sandy and Jeff Potter, which was published in the academic journal, Anthrozoös

in 2010, showed that dog lovers are generally more extroverted, sociable and agreeable than cat lovers. According to Gosling et al (2010), “given the tight psychological connections between people and their pets, it is likely that the differences between dogs and cats may be suited to different human personalities.” Dog lovers held more traditional beliefs than those who preferred cats as companions. Dog owners, like the canines they prefer, are more willing to please and are more obliging, friendly and accepting than cat fans. Interestingly, so-called, ‘dog people’ were found to be more self-disciplined and conscientious. This led the researchers to argue that the “preference for planned and sociable behaviour mirrors the cooperative organisation found in many wild dog societies.”
ANIMAL PEOPLE
Our Pets
Our Selves “I consider it the finest test of genuine love and understanding of animals if a person has sympathies for both these creatures, and can appreciate in each its own special virtues.” Konrad Lorenz (1955)
On the other hand, those who love only cats have more introverted and aloof personalities. The website, www.pethub.com describes cat lovers as “slightly more neurotic, yet also more open to new and unusual experiences, ideas and beliefs, had a greater appreciation for the arts, and displayed a higher degree of curiosity and imagination.” Apart from being more creative and ‘bohemian’, cat lovers tended to be more philosophical and held more unconventional beliefs than dog lovers. In addition, studies have shown that those who have only cats tend to be more independent, but also less self confident and assertive than those who prefer dogs. In her blog, psychologist, Stephanie Smith observes that, just like their feline friends, ‘cat people’ are moody, emotional types who are not nearly as good natured and even tempered as ‘dog people.’ After all, your dog is always happy to see and ready to forgive, unlike your cat, who is likely to ignore you if you are late or go away for a while. The Telegraph newspaper reported that, a scientific study on pet ownership conducted by the University of Bristol in the UK, found that people with cats are more likely to have university degrees than those with dogs. Researchers argue that highly educated people tend to work longer hours and thus choose a pet to fit their lifestyles. Cats, unlike dogs, don’t need to be walked and can cope with extended periods on their own, like when their humans are at work. The study, published in the Veterinary Record journal, also found that income did not play a part and that cat owners were more likely to be older and female. Another key difference is that cat owners are more likely to live alone than dog owners. Gender and marital status also plays a part, and single women are far more likely to own cats than single males or married females. Past experience, particularly in the family during childhood is another contributing factor and those who grew up with a pet cat are more likely to own them as adults than those who grew
up having dogs as pets. The emergence of these variations in species preference can be attributed to the relationship that people have had with cats and dogs throughout history, as well as their undomesticated ‘nature’. Unlike dogs, who are social animals that live and hunt in packs with an established ‘hierarchy,’ cats living in their wild state are primarily solitary beings. Cats are also nocturnal which is out of sync with human bio-rhythms. Dogs are active during the day and are generally easier to incorporate into family life. They are also eager to please and take an active interest in everything we do. Cats, though curious, observe from afar, remain uncommitted and fickle, easily losing interest and move onto something else. As mentioned earlier on, cats are thought to be low maintenance pets when compared to dogs since they don’t have to be walked and can be left alone for longer periods of time without becoming destructive. It is worth mentioning that studies have shown that walking dogs is an activity that brings people into public spaces and facilitates social interaction and networking with other people (usually fellow dog walkers). In conclusion, notwithstanding that we are indeed generalising and being culturally biased in drawing these conclusions, it does appear that, like the animal that they prefer, people mirror that species’ general qualities. Those who prefer dogs (or have both dogs and cats) tend to be very social and are better able to follow through on things. In contrast, those who are exclusive cat fans seem to be more introverted and self-sufficient. At the same time, ‘cat people’ are more unconventional, making them open to, and appreciative of new ideas and experiences.

tips for responsible pet owners Whether travelling a short distance or across the world, it has never been easier or more safe to take your pet with you.
Responsible pet owners should: 1. Make sure your pet visits a veterinarian before you leave. They should get the appropriate shots and refills for any medication. 2. Get an updated health certificate for your pet. Since they are only good for 10 days, make sure you get this right before leaving. 3. Look ahead at the weather conditions. Inclement weather affects pets as well as human passengers, so be prepared for delays or cancellations. During the winter and summer months, airlines may have restrictions on transporting pets due to extreme temperatures. If possible, reschedule your pet’s travel when weather will improve to avoid last minute delays or an unexpected layover in the middle of a trip. 4. Prepare your pets for flights or long distance travel. By acclimatising them to their crate ahead of time, they will feel safe and remain comfortable during their trip. 5. Consider hiring a professional pet shipper if you are travelling a long distance or are relocating. They will handle everything and make sure your pet is safe during travel. Pet travel is very safe, especially if families use a professional pet shipping company. Professional pet shippers work closely with airlines to provide a safe environment for the pet during transport. During extreme weather conditions, they are able to coordinate directly with the airlines so they can stay ahead of any flight delays or cancellations. “Your pet is a member of your family and you want to make sure they have a safe, comfortable travel experience. That’s our top priority as well!” Estelle Fourie l Owner of Animal Travel Services

At Stone Hill, a site has been found from that period and the pieces are displayed for visitors who may be interested. The collection is dated somewhere between 1899 to 1902. Stone Hill offers privacy, peace and seclusion and it is where your internal clock instinctively slows to the rhythm of the bush. The welcome is warm and the attention is personalised so come and barbeque under the stars and hear the call of the jackals. PET POLICY: All dogs, cats and caged birds are welcome all year round. Pets sleep inside – bring own pet beds, bedding and bowls. Dogs are not permitted on the furniture and pets must be free of ticks and fleas on arrival. Enclosed garden and easy access to walks. Consideration must be given to resident dogs, cats, horses and wildlife. Pets stay FREE. No Doggie Damages Deposit is required. See review on page 7...

Mdzananda Animal Clinic is the only permanent animal welfare support in Khayelitsha, a “township” area just outside Cape Town. The word mdzananda means distemper in the local isiXhosa dialect, and the clinic provides primary veterinary healthcare services i.e. spay/neuter, dipping, deworming and vaccination of dogs and cats in this sprawling area that is home to over a million people. The Clinic runs from six recycled shipping containers and seven of our nine loyal staff members are Khayelitsha residents.

Operational since 1997, TUFCAT looks after close to 200 feral cats living in 24 different colonies on the 160ha campus. The cats are trapped, sterilised and re-released, and perform an invaluable service by keeping the university free of rodents. From time to time cats, kittens and dogs are dumped on campus and TUFCAT then ensures that they are rescued and re-homed wherever possible. Since we do not have our own staff, infrastructure or resources, we rely heavily on other animal welfare groups to assist us and we have developed good relationships with many to this end. The project is sustained by individual and corporate donations. We also collect secondhand books which we then sell to the staff and students and our weekly booksales have become a favourite stop for both students and staff alike. TUFCAT SUPPORTED BY PETFRIENDLY

STERILISATION
is what we’re all about!
www.ebervetcvc.co.za Ebervet Community Veterinary Care has been up and running for 6 years and is based in Gordon’s Bay in the Western Cape.
W
e started out 20 years ago at a private clinic, doing sterilisations for our local Animal Welfare Society. Being avid travellers, it soon became apparent that more needed to be done to help the animals, not only in our local community but also in the more distant reaches of the Cape. It was at this point that the CVC clinic was introduced, a Landrover was bought and travels began. We are pretty much self-sufficient; veterinarian, staff and equipment all travel in the Landie. What we require of the township, farm or village is a building with running water and electricity in which to set up. Then of course the animals that need to be sterilised and a few willing helpers to monitor the animals while they wake up. Some of the places we have held “Spay Days” at include Zoar, Ladismith, Calvinia, Elandsbaai, Knysna, Barrydale, Aberdeen, Villiersdorp, Botriver, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Uniondale and Van Wyksdorp. Still hoping for Mauritius and Madagascar, just a slight stretch of the imagination, although there must be lots of unsterilised animals there too! Mostly our away “Spay Days” are held once or twice a month through organisations such as Karoo Animal Protection Society and Overberg Petcare Society. On these spay days we aim to sterilise as many animals as we can per day, with one veterinarian and one assistant.

On a monthly basis, we spay an average of one hundred dogs and cats at our private clinic, whilst some of these animals are pets being homed and sterilised for our local Animal Welfare Society in the Helderberg. The majority of these animals come from the township or from people who genuinely cannot afford normal private clinic rates. It feels as though it’s a never ending story and in truth it is. All we can try and do is to control it. If you would like to help those who cannot help themselves because they don’t have a voice, please contact your local SPCA, Animal Welfare, Cats Protection League etc. Contact numbers for these organisations can be found in your local telephone directory or, even easier, in the latest edition of The South African Petfriendly Directory. Donations of time, money, unused household items, books, pet food etc. can and will save countless lives! Remember, our work is never ending!
