HOLISTIC & NATURAL GUIDELINES AND RESOURCES FOR YOUR PETS NUTRITION

by Cheryl Larson, Pet Journal Columist clarson@petjournalmidwest.com Garlic has antiseptic, antibiotic, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. It can also be used as an anthelmintic (de-worming agent).

It acts as a potent expectorant (helps bring phlegm or mucous up and out of the airway). It can lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots.

And it can support the formation of good bacteria in the digestive tract.

In the U.S., garlic is commonly fed to dogs due to its reputation for repelling fleas and ticks. The sulfur in the garlic is excreted through the dog’s skin, keeping fleas at bay.

How to feed Garlic The most important ingredient in garlic is a substance known as “allicin,” which is formed from a combination of two enzymes found separately inside garlic cloves.

The first, “alliin,” is a nonvolatile, odorless sulfur amino acid. When a clove is cut (or chewed), alliin comes into contact with another enzyme called “alliinase.” Combined, the enzymes become allicin, a pungent, volatile sulfur compound that gives garlic its distinctive taste and smell.

Allicin is unstable; it converts into other compounds if it is not stabilized during manufacturing.

Heat, in particular, drastically reduces allicin yield. Due to intense competition in the market, most companies that make garlic supplements for the medicinal benefits for humans monitor the amount of allicin in their products. Many state their stabilized and standardized allicin yield on their packaging. If you feed dried garlic, whether in a powdered or granulated form, the important thing is to get garlic that has not been heat-treated.

Begin with a low dose, introducing garlic in increasing amounts over a week or two until you are feeding the entire dose. An average dose of garlic for large dogs should be about one fresh, crushed garlic clove per day. If you feed pure, cold-processed garlic powder or granules, the equivalent is about a half-teaspoon. The suggestion for medium-sized dogs is half a clove (or 1/4 teaspoon of powder); for small dogs, give just a quarter clove

Hops used in the brewing of beer is very toxic to dogs, only a few flower heads can lead to elevated body temperature, racing heart, anxiety, abnormal clotting and death. Home beer brewers with pets will want to be extra cautious about storage of Hops.

What to Avoid in your pet food, meat by-products (of dubious origin and not typically stored as carefully), a “generic” fat (can literally be of any animal origin including restaurant grease), added sweeteners (used to persuade animals to eat food comprised of grain fragments), and artificial colors, flavors or preservatives (food should be appealing because it is made with healthy meats and fats, things that dogs and cats love naturally)!

If you live with a carnivore as a pet it is important to understand how they were designed to eat naturally, and to look for foods that strive to provide nutrients closest to the natural form. Cats eat mice and birds and reptiles, and dogs eat chickens, deer and sheep.

VEILED CHAMELEONS ~ CHALLENGING BUT REWARDING

by Dr. Michael Wenninger, Pet Journal Contributor Veiled chameleons inhabit coastal mountain regions of Saudi Arabia and Yemen. They are arboreal lizards that inhabit a variety of habitats from lush tropical regions to more arid scrub environments.

The temperatures found in their native habitats range from 75 - 95 degrees. They are insectivores but will eat other small animals that can be overpowered. Chameleons have several distinct characteristics that separate them from other lizard species. They are laterally compressed and generally thin. The males have prominent casques on top of their heads and are much larger and more brightly colored than females. There eyes move independently and chameleons have excellent eyesight. Prey is hunted by sight and captured using a long flexible tongue that may extend up to 1.5 times the length of the body.

Captive care of veiled chameleons should mimic natural environments.

They should be kept in open-air or screen type enclosures with adequate ventilation. A temperature gradient from 75 - 95 degrees should be provided. The enclosure should be heavily planted to provide visual barriers and micro-habitats.

It should include vines and small branches for climbing. Since veiled

chameleons are arboreal species and generally drink from dew or rain collected on leaves or from rain running off of their heads, they require a misting system or adequate spraying to maintain hydration.

They should be fed a variety of “gutloaded” insects daily. Supplemental calcium and vitamins are required.

They are believed to be incapable or inefficient in the conversion of beta carotene to vitamin A so a supplement containing vitamin A is beneficial. Chameleons also require UVB irradiation for activation of vitamin D and subsequent calcium metabolism.

Common medical problems in captivity are usually associated with underlying husbandry problems. A thorough history and physical examination can help to determine the underlying cause of the presenting disease process.

Well, in a few short weeks we’ll be celebrating the first day of spring on March 20th! Now, don’t expect to be hopping and frolicking on your plush green lawn with puppies and bunnies dancing madly to happy singing birds. No, just get that idea out of your head right now.

A certain obese rodent from Pennsylvania has slammed on the breaks to any possible enjoyment on 2014’s first day of spring. Mr. Groundhog (also known as a whistle-pig?, go figure) has cursed us with six more weeks of winter. Who gave him the on/off switch for winter? Apparently, a group of humans who call themselves the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club meet on the morning of February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob (Wait, WHAT? No, I’m above this) in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The club members, dressed in suits and top hats then rifle the whistle-pig outa bed, thrust him above their heads and demand a weather prediction. The groundhog speaking in Groundhogese directs the club president, who speaks fluent Groundhogese (bars must open pretty early in Punxsutawney), to a scroll that contains the prediction for spring’s arrival. I’m not making this stuff up. There’s a website that explains some of the lore surrounding the G-Hog. There’s also some nonsense about Phil drinking some elixir that grants him eternal life and

that he’s 126+ years old! I suppose he sparkles in sunlight too (this will be my first and LAST Twilight reference… ever. I promise). Is the whole country going nuts! I’ll never complain about living in Wisconsin again. Yeah, we have bigfoot, the hodag, werewolves, ghosts galore, the occasional chupacabra, and aliens, but the one thing one don’t have or need is a rat the predicts the weather. It’s the 21st century where we have super high definition mocha flavored laser coffee, robots delivering pizza, rocket cars we can take to our summer homes on the moon, a dog and cat running for the oval office in 2016, and we still allow an attention starved chubby rat prognosticate our weather for us.

Are we still in the dark ages?

My only reminder this month is about St. Patrick’s Day. I know I’ve mentioned this at least a dozen times, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to sink in. No treats for us. I know you may think beer is really no big deal and with it being green, it almost seems like medicine. But alcohol is extremely bad for us. Try to remember this while you celebrating St. Patrick’s banishing of the snakes from Ireland. Poor snakes, what did they do to anyone. Also, please do not, no matter how cool you think it’ll look, dye us green. As a dog, we’ll just sit there and let you have your fun while we pity you. Cats,

SCRAPPY on the other hand, will bring down wrath of a thousand angry demon cats to punish you for the indignity you brought against them. Maybe it would be a good idea to just skip the whole dying process.

Well, I think that’s about enough for this month.

Even with the weather, I hope everyone has a great March and just keeps thinking about the summer that’s coming up. I have to busy myself with something to take my mind off the freezing temperatures and snow covering the ground. I know, I’ll unpack my clothes and start working on my look for the summer. Dig out all my shorts and Affliction shirts (hey, I’m a pit bull and an MMA champion).

Start hitting one of those 24 hour gyms and bulking up and then it’ll be lots of trips down to the beach to bark at all the lady dogs and do some casual posing.

Frank, a former member of the Free Roaming Felines Program and appeared in the “Frank Sinatra Syndrome article in January 2014 edition of Pet Journal, passed away on January 21st at about 10 years of age. Frank was an abandoned house cat who became part of a cat colony and just over a year ago entered into the Roamer Program. He was adopted by his foster parents.

Unbeknownst to all was the cancer that was in his body. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Alarm Clock Kitties from catsinternational.org, reprinted with permission It’s spring and Cats International Hotline is ringing with calls from sleepy cat owners. Early morning sunshine is convincing kitties that 3 - 5 am is ideal for hunting. (Cats are naturally dawn and dusk hunters). Since many kitties are indooronly cats, the prey becomes the nick-knacks on the dresser, Mom and Dad’s feet, or the other cat in the house. All of the above get Kitty into a lot of trouble, so an early morning chase ensues. This isn’t what Kitty had in mind, but it’s just as good. Let’s face it, any time a little 7 lb. creature can get a person who is 6 times his size and at least 20 times his weight out of a reclining position, then victory has to be claimed by the diminutive one. If he actually succeeds in getting a meal out of this fiasco, then his victory is complete and forever engraved in his memory.

If you are one of those sleepy people who are regularly awakened by a feline alarm clock, then give some serious thought to conducting a strenuous interactive play session with Kitty just before bedtime. Fishing pole-type toys allow you to relax in a comfortable chair while Kitty runs off some of that pent-up energy.

Ten to fifteen minutes is all it usually takes to wear Kitty out. Don’t stop until he is lying on his side batting at the toy (too tired to chase after it). If you still get that early morning wake-up call, Kitty will have to have his own bedroom for awhile. This is not a punishment, just an evening routine that Kitty will learn to accept.

Kitty’s room should be a comfortable temperature with a litterbox on one end and his food and water on the other end. A favorite bed, some toys, and a window perch (to watch the early morning wildlife) would also be nice. Give him a special

food treat each time he is put in his room so that he soon will look forward to bedtime (and you will look forward to a good night’s sleep).

Their selfless work has brought economic, environmental and social benefits to their neighbors - and it all started with the trees up the street.

Every year about this time, the Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council honors citizens, groups and communities for their hard work making sure there are healthy, thriving trees that can make a community unique and special.

In times of limited budgets, these award winners have helped stretch those limited dollars with volunteer labor and savings by keeping valuable resources from going into landfills. These savings have been plowed back into the community’s urban forests that line streets, fill city parks and grace lawns.

The Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council waded through many worthy nominations and selected the following for the five awards that reflect their efforts in 2013.
