GMO FREE PET FOOD

CHOOSE NON-GMO PET FOOD As responsible pet caretakers, you have the right to know what you are feeding your pet companions. One of the most important choices anyone can make is whether or not to feed pet food containing GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms, also called genetically engineered ingredients). Because GMOs are pervasive in our pet food supply most familiar processed pet food sold contain them. Pet food manufacturers are not required to label them, many Americans are not even aware that most of the cheap grains are GMO and in many cases they are in your petʼs favorite food. Being the most progressive retailer of natural & organic holistic pet food, Pet Nutrition Systems® is proud to support GMO choice and transparency, such as supporting labeling efforts like Proposition 37 in California and also by providing our customers with the only Non-GMO and organic handmade products available anywhere. We are really excited to announce that all Pet Nutrition Systems® partnership retailers in the US will have the first and only Non-GMO Pet Food products on sale starting this coming week, Monday, October 22. Pet Nutrition Systems thinks its time for pet retailers to start offering their customers a fresh, clean, non-GMO choice. We have supported mandatory product labeling measures for both human and pet foods over the years, most recently Californiaʼs Proposition 37 and Washington Stateʼs Initiative Measure 522, with the hope that these grass roots efforts will lead to FDA & AAFCO standards for all food.

The research showing the health problems from eating Genetically Modified foods first came out during the major pet food recalls in 1997. These recalls were caused by melamine. The scientists behind the melamine-enhanced foods were food geneticists. The 2002 and 2007 recalls were repeats of 1997 and which tells us that the problem was not corrected. (The manufacturers did not stop using GM ingredients) Recently Árpád Pusztai, one of the leading scientists and former GMO advocate, was hired to test the safety of GMO foods. His conclusion were staggering! For speaking out against GMO food safety after his research was completed his career was ruined. Pusztai stated: “After the animals were dissected, we found out that in comparison with the non-genetically modified potatoes, their internal organs developed differently.” The intestines and stomach lining increased in size, the liver and kidneys were smaller, and the overall rates of growth of these animals were retarded. Most notable in this study was the evidence proving that the immune systems of all the animals in the study suffered. Pusztai emphasized, “ very highly significant differences between the GMfed animals and the non-GM fed animals.” When Pusztai saw the extensive damage that his potatoes caused in the lab animals, he also realized that if biotech companies had done the safety studies for themselves, the dangerous potatoes would have easily made it to market. He knew this because he had reviewed the confidential submissions from the biotech companies which allowed their GM soy and corn onto the market. “They were flimsy,” he said. “They were not scientifically well founded.” They would never detect the changes in GMO-fed animals. Reading the industry studies was a turning point in Pusztaiʼs life. He realized what he was doing and what the industry scientists

were doing was diametrically opposed. He was doing safety studies. Companies like Monsanto, on the other hand, were doing as little as possible so their foods would go to market as quickly as possible. Pusztai went on to say that the GM soy and corn already on the market had been produced using the same process that had created his dangerous potato. Thus, the GM crops being consumed in the UK and the US might lead to similar damage in the gut, brain and organs of the entire animal population tested. This means that the farm animals fed GMO grain would be at risk from the same type of problems found in his study and ultimately your petĘźs health is at risks. The majority of all pet food produced in the US market is made from meat fed GM grain. During his national TV interview, Pusztai stated: “If I had the choice, I would certainly not eat [GM foods] until I see at least comparable experimental evidence which we are producing for genetically modified potatoes.â€? Here in North America, it is important to avoid processed corn, wheat and soy products in pet foods because these foods are often GMO. This list will grow as more and more GMO foods become accepted. Your best bet is to avoid processed foods altogether and feed your dog organic whole foods made from companies you know use local farms and farmers they can trust. This is the only way to know the quality of food your pet is eating. Pet Nutrition Systems knows how difficult it may be to stay up-todate on food ingredients that are at-risk of being genetically modified, as the list of at-risk agricultural ingredients is frequently changing. We are committed to inform our clients about their choices, we work diligently to maintain an accurate list of risk ingredients, work diligently with our suppliers to supply you with the

cleanest, freshest and most nutritious pet food at the best price. Agricultural products are segmented into two groups: (1) those that are high-risk of being GMO because they are currently in commercial production, and (2) those that have a monitored risk because suspected or known incidents of contamination have occurred and/or the crops have genetically modified relatives in commercial production with which cross-pollination (and consequently contamination) is possible. High-Risk Ingredients (in commercial pet food production; ingredients derived from these must be tested every time prior to use in Non-GMO Project Verified products (as of December 2011): Beef (approx. 90% of all beef is raised on GMO corn & wheat) Chicken (approx. 95% of U.S. poultry is fed GMO corn) Alfalfa (first planting 2011) Canola (approx. 90% of U.S. crop) Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011) Cotton (approx. 90% of U.S. crop in 2011) Papaya (most of Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres) Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011) Sugar Beets (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010) Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000 acres) ALSO high-risk: animal products (wheat, rice, eggs, honey, etc.) because of contamination in feed. Go organic! The USDA National Organic Standards do not allow genetically engineered seed and ingredients in the growth and

production of human organic foods. Now it is time for the AAFCO to do the same with pet food. Pet Nutrition Systems is leading the way offering the first non-GMO pet food formulations.
