Even if you are not ready to make healthier food choices for your pet companion there’s a dirty secret that the big processed pet food companies don’t want you to know about. Your pet food contains “Frankeningredients,” ingredients that are genetically altered to perform other functions in addition to providing nutrition. These ingredients are no longer the natural food our livestock is meant to eat, nor the natural food found at you local organic market. What is worse, your pet’s body is having a hard time assimilate these new genetically modified ingredients. The effect bring a rise in allergies, autoimmune disease, cancer and digestive disorders over the last 3 to 5 years. Genetically Engineered Food or Genetically Modified Organisms are created by bio-engineers working for the large agricultural corporation. The major source for most of our produce, meats and processed foods come from these companies. The thinking behind genetically modifying plants/food was to bring out desired traits, ward off pests, or withstand herbicides and pesticides used in their cultivation. (see our GMO Free Pet Food guide or our fb page) The major problem is these genetically engineered foods are unlabeled. You have no knowledge of how much or how little GMO were used in the making of your pets food. Over 79% of all Americans pet dogs are eating processed food filled with genetically modified meat and vegetables. In fact, genetically engineered ingredients are in 95% of the pet food on America’s big box pet stores shelves. (21% of all dog owners now either fed a raw diet, whole food diet and/or home cooks food)
The AAFCO, FDA and our medical/health industry are not speaking out against these foods saying that GMO are “Generally Recognized as Safe.” GMO’s have been tested on animals as part GMO human studies to horrifying results. The results of these animal testing show GMO’s can be linked to toxic and allergic reactions, organ disease, cancer and many auto-immune diseases in canines and felines, and to sickness, sterility, and fatalities in rats and livestock. They have also shown to be linked to damage to virtually every organ studied in the animals used in these studies. While many European and South American countries have outright bans against genetically engineered foods in their regions, America does not even label GMO ingredients in human or pet food let alone out right ban their use. High-Risk Ingredients Beef (approx. 90% of all beef is raised on GMO corn, soy & wheat) Chicken (approx. 95% of U.S. poultry is fed GMO corn & soy) Alfalfa (first planting 2011) Canola Oil (approx. 90% of U.S. crop) Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011) Papaya (most of Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres) Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011) Sugar Beets (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010) Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000
acres) ALSO high-risk: animal products (wheat, rice, eggs, honey, etc.) because of contamination in feed. What most consumers don’t know is that the pet food industry is an extension of the human food and agriculture industries. Pet food provides a market for slaughterhouse offal, grains considered “unfit for human consumption,” and similar waste products to be turned into profit. This waste includes intestines, udders, esophagi, and possibly diseased and cancerous animal parts. Three of the five major pet food companies in the United States are subsidiaries of major multinational companies: Nestlé (Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, and Ralston Purina products such as Dog Chow, ProPlan, and Purina One), Heinz (9 Lives, Amore, Gravy Train, Kibbles-n-Bits, Nature’s Recipe), Colgate-Palmolive (Hill’s Science Diet Pet Food). Other leading companies include Procter & Gamble (Eukanuba and Iams), Mars (Kal Kan, Mealtime, Pedigree, Sheba, Waltham’s), and Nutro. From a business standpoint, multinational companies owning pet food manufacturing companies are an ideal relationship. All of these companies produce GMO produce, fed GMO feed to their livestock and are against the any mandatory labeling of GMO.
What can you do? Pet Nutrition Systems believe that everyone in America has the right to know what’s in their food and their pet companion’s food. We shouldn’t worry about whether our pet’s nourishment contains GMO’s. Given the undisputable harm these crops have on all the animal studies and the rise of cancer, organ failure and allergies connecting the dots is not that hard to do. As pioneers in the pet nutrition revolution, Pet Nutrition Systems is petitioning the AAFCO to label GMO’s in our pet’s food. Will you join us? Most importantly start to integrate organic whole food into your pets diet or buy premade, frozen holistic pet food that can replace or augment any commercial pet food you may be feeding.

Pet Nutrition Systems has broken the breeds down by ancestral regions that they were developed in. Once you have indentified which region or combination of regions your pet is from the better prepared you will be to select the correct protein base. These regional specific guidelines provide an evolutionary basis for diets appropriate for a variety of dogs. Below are 8 Breed Groupings and the recommended Pet Nutrition Systems whole food Retail formulation that match their general nutrient needs. When canines are fed a region whole food diet they are less likely to develop food allergies, digestive disorders and autoimmune issues. Asian Breeds: Fish poultry and lamb, along with steamed vegetables including beans and whole grains such as white, brown and wild rice (all ingredients plentiful in the region at the time these breeds where first created) form the basis of a sound diet. (Salmon, Turkey, Chicken, Boar) Euro-coastal Breeds: Diets rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber compliment these breeds’ special needs. In addition to fish lamb and poultry sources of protein, potatoes and other vegetables should feature prominently. (Beef & Salmon) Field Hunting Breeds: Lamb, rabbit and chicken adequately fuel these active breeds, along with vegetables and grains, including oats and whole barely. (Chicken & Turkey) German Breeds: Greens and grains, in addition to lamb and beef, make all the difference for these breeds that have shorter colons than other breeds. The right blend of all three types of ingredients is essential to prevent bloat and adequate nutrient absorption. (Beef, Bison & Boar) North American Coastal Breeds: These breeds, developed in close association with water, not surprisingly thrive when fed a diet rich in water foul and fish. Duck, salmon and other aquatic proteins rich in fatty acids provide vital nutrients for these breeds. Greens and whole grains complete the diet. (Turkey, Chicken & Salmon)
Northeast USA Breeds: Combinations of fish and crude animal proteins form the basis of well-balanced cold-weather breeds. Game meats, such as elk and venison, closely mimic the diets they were developed to consume. These breeds often do not tolerate whole grains, which cause them stomach upset and gas. (Beef, Turkey & Bison) Sight Hounds: Rabbit, chicken and turkey protein sources most closely match what these breeds were developed to hunt. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains round out their diets and are designed to provide energy for a variety of activities for which these breeds are known. (Chicken & Turkey) Toy Breeds: Chicken and fish, along with protein and omegarich avocado ensure these delicate breeds retain vigorous health and lustrous coats.
