BADDER/URINARY WELLNESS PROGRAM
DIET FOR CATS WITH URINARY TRACT INFECTION The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The key elements in the system are the kidneys, a pair of purplish-brown organs. The kidneys remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine, keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood, and produce a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped chamber in the lower abdomen. Urine is stored in the bladder and emptied through the urethra. The urinary system is structured in a way that helps ward off infection. The ureters and bladder normally prevent urine from backing up toward the kidneys, and the flow of urine from the bladder helps wash bacteria out of the body. An immune system compromised by a bad diet can create aback which will help cause an invention and or crystals. Make sure you cat has lots of fresh water and only feed her wet food, preferably a whole food (non processed) diet. Kibble will dehydrate the body increasing the chances of reinfection. To get them to drink more water by adding the liquid from a tuna can to her regular water, but make sure you don't let the water sit for a long time. Also get her some cat grass, and I've found the best formula for UTI's in cats is an organic whole food diet. We have treat hundreds of cats with UTI and only a few of them have had this problem since switching to our diet plan. Bladder stones can appear as "stones" or crystals all depending on their actual make up and the cat's system. The smaller the crystals, the easier it is for the cat to pass it without surgery. Processed kibble and cans food such as Eukanuba and Hill's Science Diet has been the cause of many UTI problems in cats. This is very sad since these two companies, as well as others, are commonly recommended by veterinarians. They carry animal byproducts, which are not good for urinary health. Pet Nutrition Systems recipes are scientifically formulated to keep the pH at 6.6, where it should be. Our meals are byproduct free, have no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors, no corn, no wheat and no soy. It is full of Omega-3 fatty acids, Probiotics, antioxidants and minerals. You can look our food at www.petnutritionsystems.com. or email me at VPN@petnutritionsystems.com. We have a VPN (veterinary prescriptive nutrition)
service that provides you with the best scientifically designed formulations from the most noted Animal Nutritionist in the field. General rule of thumb with stones is if they don't appear for 3 (three) years you are in the clear but as the pet ages over 10 (ten) they may reappear. Here are some things that will help your cat to stay healthy if you are not using Pet Nutrition Systems’ cat VPN meals. Begin to add Garlic powder to their food daily. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help eliminate bacteria and infection. Don't be afraid to sprinkle it with a heavy hand, cats like Garlic and they should eat it right up. This will not harm them and this will boost their immune system and healing time by 70%. Cranberry mixed in your formulation is a good idea as well. Begin a regimen of Probiotics such as Acidolphilus. These good bacteria are actually found in yogurt. You can purchase these in capsule form at your pet store but it is best to add yogurt to their food.. Acidophilus helps to maintain and strengthen the good bacteria of the gut crucial for healthy digestion. Without these good bacteria animal bodies are prone to disease and illness. When cats and dogs are put on antibiotics, they kill this good bacteria and render the body weakness and acceptable to bacteria. This is why you may have heard woman complain of getting a yeast infection after taking antibiotics. You may even add a tiny drop of salmon oil to their food. This will ensure good passage of fecal matter and will not allow bacteria to be built up in the gut. An added side benefit of adding a drop or two of salmon oil to your cat’s food is their coat will be more shiny and healthier in appearance. You can also add a drop of unsweetened Cranberry juice to his food daily. This juice must be purchased from the health food store because it contains no sugar or other products. Cranberry acts the same in animals. It helps to strengthen, tone and cleanse the kidneys. These are great supplement to add to your cats diet and will not harm them in any way. They all are incorporated in Pet Nutrition Systems VPN Cat meals. Call us 570.266.1124 or email vpn@petnutritionsystems.com us for your order.

STEP B: Assist With PNS Nutritional Diet Plan Calcium oxalate crystals are often a genetic problem caused by a lack of an enzyme to process oxalates. Diet change is needed to help prevent these. PNS has developed a guideline for recipes and supplements that will help you. There is more than a strong link between feeding a dry diet and the occurrence of bladder crystals. PNS suggests that feeding a dry diet causes dehydration leading to high urine concentration. The higher the urine concentration the more difficult it is to flush mineral deposits from the urinary tract. Pet parents whom feed a dry diet either out of convenience or because they believe a dry diet combat dental plaque. Dry food does not clean your cat's teeth! In fact, dry food really has no benefit for the cat. It is merely a convenience for the people choosing to use this processed product. The high heat used in processing dry food damages (denatures) the proteins in the food. The resulting unnatural proteins may trigger an immune response that can lead to food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease. Feeding your cat a raw or cooked whole food diet are the best diets available.
DO NOT use fish flavored foods. Many veterinarians report a link to feeding fish flavored foods to outbreaks of UTI. Fish-flavored foods have also been linked to the development of hyperthyroidism in older cats and they are not recommended for cats with kidney disease due to their high phosphorus content. In addition, fish flavored foods tend to be addictive to cats and when fed these foods consistently they can suddenly refuse to eat anything else. your cats' formulation may include ground chicken, salmon, tuna, eggs, dairy (yogurt and cottage cheese). If purine crystal amounts remain high, protein may need to be reduced. Once we have obtained your blood test back from the lab and receive your PNS Veterinary Prescriptive Nutrition form our animal nutritionists will select the proper recipes for your pet’s diet plan. You will receive these recipes to make for yourself or have our commercial kitchen make and ship to you.
Step C: Adequate Hydration Making sure your dog has access to clean drinking water is especially important for dogs that have recurrent UTIs. Water source must be pure - PNS recommends the use of filtered or spring water. Never give your dog water that has gone through a water softener the sodium levels are too high. PNS has a line of filtered health infused water for you purchase on our Health and Wellness page. Water must be abundant - A normal dog will drink 1.5 cups of water per 10 pounds of body weight per day. During hot weather or after exercise these needs increase. Dogs experiencing urinary tract or kidney problems may drink even more. Water must be kept clean - Unmoving water is an ideal breeding ground for harmful bacteria, so water bowls should be cleaned daily and the water replenished. Remember; never allow your dog to drink from puddles or other freestanding water. It could contain toxins from road run-off, lawn chemicals, etc.
Step D: Supplements Natural substances can be used effectively to provide relief from UTI symptoms as well as strengthen the urinary tract and provide support against future occurrences.

It is recommended that you feed your adult cats twice a day. This recipe provides approximately three servings. Rotation of these protein source is suggested (meat amounts given in raw weight):
1/2 pound boneless chicken breast or thigh, minced 6 ounces ground turkey, or minced turkey (dark meat) 1/2 pound lean beef, minced 1/2 pound beef, chicken or turkey heart, ground or minced About three times per week, include one chopped hard-boiled or scrambled egg. If you would like, once a week, substitute 4 ounces of organic liver for 1/2 of any meat source. Another option is to substitute a four-ounce can of tuna that is packed in water, a six-ounce can of sardines, or a five-ounce can of salmon with bones for any meat source once every two weeks. Do not use canned fish as a protein source for cats that are prone to urinary tract problems. For cats needing a lower protein diet, add one cup of cooked white rice. Supplements: Two teaspoons of olive oil or one teaspoon of olive oil and one teaspoon of flaxseed oil 300 mg. of calcium (as carbonate or citrate) or about one slightly rounded teaspoon of bone meal (human grade).
