OUR COMMUNITIES

8

The charm and beauty of the resort communities that comprise the Petoskey Area will captivate you from the moment you arrive.

PETOSKEY

is best known for its beautiful setting along Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay and its charming Gaslight Shopping District. You’ll find never-ending recreation, delightful dining, inviting hospitality and so much more. The question is never what to do, it’s what to do next.

HARBOR SPRINGS

is a place where time slows down, inviting you to enjoy everything from swimming to dining, shopping to biking. The picture-perfect downtown is great for relaxing and watching boats in the harbor. The famous Tunnel of Trees always delights.

BOYNE CITY

wraps around Lake Charlevoix – voted one of the best lakes in America by the readers of USA Today. There are no strip malls here but a great mix of independently owned shops and restaurants where you’re likely to be personally greeted by the owner.

10

BAY HARBOR

is a luxury waterfront community and world-class vacation destination. Amenities include an upscale shopping district and restaurant scene, the award-winning Bay Harbor Golf Club and an amazing cultural center, the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

ALANSON

is nestled on the banks of the Crooked River, a major link in the Inland Waterway of Northern Michigan, which stretches all the way across the state to Lake Huron. Take a stroll on the boardwalk along the river or relax at Island Sanctuary Park.

BAY VIEW

is a century-old community that touts nearly 500 Victorian cottages, buildings and inns, and has earned designation as a National Historic Landmark. Go back to yesteryear and enjoy performing arts, recreation for adults and children, and miles of trails – all open to the public.

WATER FUN

12

From the crystal-clear blue of Lake Michigan to the quiet beauty of inland lakes and rivers, the water recreation in the Petoskey Area is unparalleled.

COME ON IN. THE WATER’S FINE.

No matter which of our resort communities you visit, a refreshing lake or a glistening stream will be nearby — making your stay even more unforgettable. Our freshwater lakes are perfect for swimming, jet skiing, paddle boarding or sailing. Clean, clear rivers are ideal for fishing or kayaking. And pristine beaches invite you to hunt Petoskey stones, make sandcastles, or simply catch some rays.

Transport yourself to a simpler, more refined time. Our historic downtowns, neighborhoods and museums bring the area’s thriving past to life.

RETURN TO ANOTHER ERA.

As you walk through elegant neighborhoods full of gingerbread homes, you can almost hear the horse-drawn buggies clattering down the streets. The Bay View community alone has nearly 500 cottages, churches, and inns on the National Historic Register. Museums chart our history from the Odawa Indians through the lumbering and ski industries. Tribute is also paid to Ernest Hemingway, who spent his early summers here.

Approximately 35 miles from Petoskey is Mackinac Island, a historic, renowned destination where no cars are allowed. It is about a 16-minute ferry ride from either Mackinaw City in Michigan’s lower peninsula or St. Ignace in Michigan’s upper peninsula. To get to St. Ignace and Michigan’s UP, cross the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge – the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world. Once on the island, take a horse-drawn carriage tour or ride a bike 8.2 miles around the island’s perimeter on M-185. Visit Arch Rock, Fort Mackinac, the Butterfly House and be sure to take home some world-famous Mackinac Island fudge.

Mackinaw City is home to Colonial Michilimackinac, a replica of an 18th century fort and fur trading village and features historical interpreters representing voyagers, soldiers, merchants, and families. In the Straits Area, you’ll also find the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Center, an operating water-powered sawmill built in the 1780s. Guests can enjoy nature trails, ziplining, archaeological exhibits, and other live programs.

Charlevoix Mushroom Houses

Just 20 miles from the Petoskey Area, you’ll find the charming lakefront community of Charlevoix. Accessible by car via U.S. 31 or by bike along the Little Traverse Wheelway, visitors can enjoy local restaurants, eclectic shopping, sandy Lake Michigan beachfront, historic museums and sights - even skydiving! The most popular attraction in Charlevoix is the Mushroom Houses, a collection of 28 stone home structures that can be toured via GEM cart.

Traverse City & Sleeping Bear Dunes

traversecity.com

Approximately 70 miles south of the Petoskey Area, down scenic U.S. 31, is Traverse City. Dining, beaches, kids activities, events and attractions await, including Sleeping Bear Dunes. One of America’s most beautiful landscapes, this National Lakeshore is a 64-mile curve of sweeping vistas, freshwater beaches, and wilderness islands. Climb majestic sand dunes and take in spectacular panoramas – including the famous Dune Climb.
