BAY VIEW

WATER FUN
From the crystal-clear blue of Lake Michigan to the quiet beauty of inland lakes and rivers, the water recreation in the Petoskey Area is unparalleled.
COME ON IN. THE WATER’S FINE.
No matter which of our resort communities you visit, a refreshing lake or a glistening stream will be nearby — making your stay even more unforgettable. Our freshwater lakes are perfect for swimming, jet skiing, paddle boarding or sailing. Clean, clear rivers are ideal for fishing or kayaking. The Bay View community alone has nearly 500 cottages, churches, and inns on the National Historic Register. Museums chart our history from the Odawa Indians through the lumbering and ski industries. Tribute is also paid to Ernest Hemingway, who spent his early summers here.

Approximately 35 miles from Petoskey is Mackinac Island, a historic, renowned destination where no cars are allowed. It is about a 16-minute ferry ride from either Mackinaw City in Michigan’s lower peninsula or St. Ignace in Michigan’s upper peninsula. To get to St. Ignace and Michigan’s UP, cross the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge – the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world. Once on the island, take a horse-drawn carriage tour or ride a bike 8.2 miles around the island’s perimeter on M-185. Visit Arch Rock, Fort Mackinac, the Butterfly House and be sure to take home some world-famous Mackinac Island fudge.
Mackinaw City is home to Colonial Michilimackinac, a replica of an 18th century fort and fur trading village and features historical interpreters representing voyagers, soldiers, merchants, and families. In the Straits Area, you’ll also find the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Center, an operating water-powered sawmill built in the 1780s. Guests can enjoy nature trails, ziplining, archaeological exhibits, and other live programs.
