Industry News & Trends Generation Z
Gen Z is the newest generation to enter adulthood. While many dispute the exact date, the oldest members of the generation were born around 1997. Many of the elder Gen Z population has entered the workforce — you may already have Gen Z peers in your shop or dealership. This group is steadily accounting for more car sales, but what do you need to know when selling to them? Gen Z may not be as brand loyal as past generations. “71% of [Gen Z] say that they need to be aware of all the buying options available to them - making them more likely to engage with competitors and more likely to buy based on research than brand reputation,” says Ed Howarth. This group is likely to research based on your social media accounts and reviews. These digital-savvy buyers will still rely on their parents’ and friends’ suggestions, but many take to the internet to see what the broader world has to say. Hootsuite found that 80% of Gen Z uses a smart phone to visit an online retail store, 95% engage on social media, and 61% shop for a product online.

Because of this, they also look for the ability to start the car buying process online. A good thing to note is that Gen Z-ers prefer their smartphone, so you’ll want to make sure you optimize your website for mobile. A BMW service department has had great success with providing Gen Z customers with technician videos. This way, they can share the video with someone else who has more car experience, like a parent or friend, and get a second opinion. Building trust and catering to their online habits will help you earn the hard-won loyalty of Gen Z.

Industry Debate: Cloth vs. Plastic Seat Covers Several companies offer reusable seat covers for use in automotive service centers, claiming that they provide more benefits than plastic seat covers. So, what is the difference between using disposable seat covers and reusable cloth ones? We explain the distinctions below.
REUSABLE
PLASTIC
BETTER FOR ENVIRONMENT
• Cloth has to be used for more than seven years before it becomes more environmentally friendly than a plastic bag • Has to be washed to keep seats clean, increasing environmental impact
• Uses fewer resources to make • Plastic film used to make seat covers is recyclable • Closed loop recycling programs available
• Initial investment of $525-$750 (average retail price) for 50 reusable seat covers • Will need to be replaced every few months after multiple uses
• Average $200/month $225/month for total of 3 boxes of 500 seat covers
• Cloth covers tend to slide around, exposing the seat to dirt and other service soils while making it difficult for technicians to get in and out
• Advanced Slip-N-Grip® 2-layer technology is designed so that the bottom layer grips seat and top layer allows easy entry and exit
• Less user friendly, as it’s bulkier and requires more time to install and remove • Longer process in service centers due to the fact that they must be washed, stored
• It takes less than 20 seconds to install plastic seat covers and floor mats to protect vehicles from service soils

ICE vs. EV
When EVs take over, we’ll be losing nearly 100 traditional components of an ICE. These eliminations will make room for around 40 new parts. Take a look at Automotive News’ interactive guide to what will be lost and gained.
