IT’S A NEW YEAR ... STOP THINKING, START DOING!

Do we fear confronting certain tasks, or do we simply enjoy the act of not doing?
Editor’s Note: Well, now it’s almost 4:00am and I can honestly say I’m not thinking, I’m just writing... and, if this column sounds familiar— Maybe our pets are teaching us an Remember it’s true that history often invaluable lesson. Stop thinking .. does repeat itself. Start doing !

Winter Weather can be Deadly for Pets
Experts Offer Important Winter Safety Tips to Keep Pets Healthy
N
ow that winter is here, pet owners should take extra precautions with their pets’ wellness and safety. Cats and dogs need protection from the wet and cold weather, just like we do. Families can help their pets enjoy a happy and healthy winter by incorporating pet-friendly steps into their daily winter routines. Pet professionals are dedicated to keeping pets safe both inside and outside the home. Veterinarian Peter H. Eeg says, “Some pets are better suited than others for staying outdoors in the cold. There is a common misconception that all dogs will be fine if left outside. All dogs need our help and intervention during the cold months. Just like we take extra precautions with our children, we should do the same with our pets.” The experts at local vet hospitals can provide information to pet owners about Invisible Fence Brand pet containment system. They have compiled a list of winter safety tips pet owners should adhere to:
device not approved for use with animals.
Winter Safety Tips and Checklist:
· Pets are attracted to the sweet taste of antifreeze, a deadly poison. When ingested, even a small amount of this substance destroys the animal’s kidneys. Early signs of antifreeze poisoning include disorientation and stupor, followed by coma and death. Lock up antifreeze containers and clean up spills immediately.
· Dogs that spend extra time outdoors need more calories in the winter to produce body heat, so ask your veterinarian what amount to feed your pet. The more your pet is outside, the more extra fuel needed. Indoor pets, on the other hand, may get less exercise in the cold months, and will need fewer calories to avoid weight gain. · Cats are best kept inside when it gets cold, as are most small and shorthaired dogs. A dog spending time outdoors needs a dry, elevated doghouse with clean, dry bedding and a flap over the opening to keep drafts out. · Never use a space heater, heat lamp, or other 10
PETPALOOZA • Jan/Feb ‘14
· Be sure your pet has plenty of fresh water to drink. Pets lose moisture through breathing and the effects of cold temperatures are magnified by dehydration.
· Chemicals used to melt snow and ice on sidewalks can irritate pets’ paws. This may also cause pets to lick their paws, causing them to ingest toxic chemicals. Wipe the paws with a wet cloth and provide a foot bath when you bring your pet indoors. · Arthritis pain may be worse during cold and damp weather. Take special care to handle your pet gently, watch out for icy walks, provide soft bedding, and administer any necessary medications. · Be sure that your pet is current on vaccinations and medical care. A healthy pet will tolerate winter stress much better than an unhealthy one.
If your pet spends most of the time outdoors, take extra precautions for his or her shelter. Tony Hettinger, owner of Invisible Fence of Upstate NY, adds, “Outdoor dogs should have a warm, dry doghouse in an area protected from the wind, rain, and snow. Insulation such as straw and blankets is a good way to keep in body heat.” Invisible Fence professionals are dedicated to keeping pets safe at home. Invisible Fence Brand pet containment systems offer pet owners a proven way to keep their pets safe. For more than 25 years, Invisible Fence has been keeping dogs safe at home with a 98% customer satisfaction rating. More than one million customers trust Invisible Fence and our local professionals to safely contain their dogs with the only system to have been granted the ASPCA® Seal of Approval and trusted by veterinarians nationwide.

The 365 Days of Pets 2014 Calendar is the epitome of a WIN/WIN situation. Smart Dog Media Group together with Petpalooza Magazine began working with various leaders from the Rochester pet community in the summer of 2013 to develop a fundraising product that was not only entertaining, but could also be a useful tool around the home or office. To top it off, we believed it should offer additional value beyond the actual product itself.

I’ll explain. All of the pets in the calendar are winners; loved by their pet parents, who in turn are winners for helping our pet community by participating in this calendar. Local pet shelters are winners for being able to offer the calendars for sale or by donation to raise money for their charity, which in turn makes all of the animals in their care; winners. Also, the calendar was developed, designed and printed right here in Rochester, making it a win for our local economic community.

The Siberian Husky comes in all colors from black to pure white are allowed. A variety of markings on the head is common, including many striking patterns not found in other breeds. The face mask and underbody are usually white, and the remaining coat any color. The eyes are almond shaped, moderately spaced and set a trifle obliquely. It is a common misconception that all Siberians have blue eyes. They can have eyes that are blue, brown, amber, or any combination thereof including eyes which are half blue and half brown, which is referred to as being partieyed. Having one blue eye and one brown eye is referred to as being bi-eyed. The large “snow shoe” feet have hair between the toes for gripping on ice. Its ears are set high and erect, with a sickle shaped tail. The Siberian Husky has a thick, wooly undercoat and a soft outer coat. It is able to withstand temperatures as low as -58 to -76 degrees F. These dogs are gentle and playful, but willful and mischievous. This cheerful dog is very fond of his or her family. A puppy at heart, they are clever, sociable and loving, easy-going and docile. Though they do generally have a lot of energy, especially as puppies. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone.
Siberian Husky S
iberian Huskies are strong, compact, working dogs. Native to Siberia, the Husky was brought to Alaska in 1909. They were used for centuries by the Chukchi people in Siberia to pull sleds, herd reindeer and perform watchdogging functions. They were perfect working dogs for the harsh Siberian conditions: hardy, able to integrate into small packs, and quite happy to work for hours on end. The Siberian Husky is a very light-weight sled dog with great stamina. It was brought to North America by fur traders in Malamute for arctic races because of their great speed. In 1925 there was a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska and many dog teams relayed the precious medicine to the stricken city. This event focused national attention on the Siberian Husky and helped popularize the breed. The Siberian Husky was also used during Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic Expeditions. An excellent pack animal, the Husky gets along well with his comrades. Siberian Huskies have now become very popular as a companion dog, but they are also used for sledding, carting and racing.

PETPALOOZA • Jan/Feb ‘14
Huskies are very intelligent and trainable, but they have a mind of their own and will only obey a command if they see the point. Training takes patience, consistency and an understanding of the Arctic dog character. This dog will take advantage if he can. Huskies make an excellent jogging companion, as long as it is not too hot. Huskies may be difficult to housebreak. This breed likes to howl and gets bored easily. They do not like to be left alone, so if this is the breed for you, you may want to consider having two. A lonely Husky can be very destructive. Remember that the Husky is a sled dog in heart and soul. They are good with other pets if they are raised with them from puppyhood. Huskies are thrifty eaters and need less food than you might expect. This breed likes to roam. Siberian Huskies can make wonderful companions for people who are aware of what to expect from these beautiful and intelligent animals.

New Year... New Attitude It’s the start of a new year and a great time to start making healthier choices for your pets. At Pet$aver Healthy Pet Superstore all of our associates are trained in pet nutrition and will help you pick out the best food and supplies for your pets’ needs.
Pet$aver recommends feeding your pets only natural and holistic foods made from the highest quality ingredients because such food helps them live long, happy, and healthy lives. The foods we recommend contain actual meat, not animal or meat by-products and no corn, wheat, or soy fillers. Meat by-products and fillers can be harmful to a pet’s health, contributing to digestive problems, allergies and other health issues. To keep your pets healthy, it is also important to keep them active. Be sure that your pet is
getting plenty of exercise, both mentally and physically. Running, walking, and playing fetch or other games with your dog each day can greatly improve your dog’s quality and length of life and yours, too! For cats, entertaining them with toys will not only help them to stay active, it also distracts them and tires them out, making them less likely to scratch and bite. How you care for your pets directly affects the quality and length of their lives. Please come in to Pet$aver today to learn how we can help you to make a positive impact on your pets’ health and happiness!

Dogs can hear sounds that are too faint for us to hear, and also can hear noises at a much higher frequency than we can. Their hearing is so good that they probably rely more on sound than on sight to navigate their world.

BIRD BANTER with Paul Lewis
Megan Poppoon, manager & Paul Lewis
Q. What kind of birds are good for kids?
A. My top three choices are
Cockatiels, Bourkes, and English Budgies, all of them train easily, are fairly quiet, not overly expen-
sive, and the cage isn’t huge like that needed for a larger parrot. I’ll be the first one to tell you that the large parrots and little kids don’t make a good combination. A small bite on a little finger is gonna hurt. Then you have to listen to that little screaming, crying voice, maybe make a trip to the doctors to patch them up and then figure out what you’re going to do to keep the kid away from the bird until it gets older. Start small. Other birds that have worked out quite well are, Lineolated Parakeets, and some of the smaller Pyrhurra Conures like
Owner, Birds Unlimited Located in Webster, NY
the Black Capped and the Green Cheeked. If you’re just looking for some entertainment and the child doesn’t want to handle the bird, try a couple of normal parakeets in a larger cage. They’ll offer plenty of activity and a little bit of noise. They’ll also teach some responsibility to the child and what is involved in keeping a bird if someday they may like to step up into a larger species of bird. Visit www.birdsunltd.com for more!

The bond between dog and master goes beyond the grave, as evidenced by Capitán’s unyielding loyalty to his master Miguel Guzmán, from Argentina. Capitán went missing for a few days, but he was eventually found lying in the cemetery next to Guzmán’s resting place. The remarkable part about this story is that Miguel died in a hospital, and his body was taken to a funeral home far away from where he lived. Capitán had never been to the cemetery before. The first time the funeral director saw Capitán, he arrived at the cemetery alone. The dog did a few laps through the tombstones before finding his master’s grave — all on his own. Capitán continues to visit his old master every single day, at 6:00 p.m., like clockwork. If this isn’t a display of true dedication, we don’t know what is.

This Year’s Resolution—Banish the bulge. If your dog is overweight, resolve to begin a sensible eating program. A study by the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention shows that 45 percent of dogs are overweight, including 9 percent who are obese. Cut down on the amount of food you feed, especially the packaged snacks. Most commercial treats contain too much fat, sugar, and unnecessary calories. If you must give your dog a goody, add some cutup pieces of fruit or steamed veggies to the food bowl. (But make sure to stay away from grapes, raisins, avocados, and onions, as they can be toxic to pets.) And, of course get outside and have some fun!

My dog has black nails, and because of this I cannot see the vein that runs trough them and am afraid to hurt her by trimming her nails improperly. Our daily walks, on cement, seem to keep them filed: however, her dew claws never reach the ground and I’d like to learn how to properly trim them. Any suggestions? The focus of proper nail trimming is on choosing the correct length, and not on the vein. The blood supply grows out as the nail grows. When the nail is trimmed, and blood is drawn, the vein recedes. This makes subsequent trims easier. If you avoid the vein on an overgrown nail, you will not gain ground, and will inevitably have to face cutting the vein in the future. Although the precisely correct length is subject to personal preference, and does vary between breeds, a nail length equal to the toe width is generally sufficient. Another rule of thumb (or rule of dewclaw) is to trim the dog’s nails so they are just above touching the ground when he stands straight. Then, the dewclaw should be trimmed the same length as the nail on the neighboring toe.
