Can a Pet Change Your Life?

ABSOLUTELY!

by Clyde LeFevre

If I wanted to sound cliché, (God knows, I love clichés..) I’d say there was a sparkle in his eyes, but I’d prefer to describe it this way. I think there are times when dogs see us for who we are, for instance, when they sit beside us, or in our laps and look up into our eyes. Then there are the occasions when I believe dogs look right through us ... usually when we’re holding a treat.

began realizing the incredible bond that I shared with my dog was not uncommon. So many of the people I met shared funny and touching stories about their own pets, I knew a story had to be told.

T

As Cosmo peered up at me from the ground, he was not yearning for a snack, or staring me down for a favorite chew toy. He was looking at me— right at me ... thanking me, for the joy he had just experienced.

Back in the early Spring of 2004, I was in Ellison Park with my dog “Cosmo.” He loved going there, and I loved that he loved it. Romping around the muddy shores of ‘doggy beach’ with a multitude of canine visitors was one of his favorite things to do.

I smiled and said, “You’re a good boy, Cosmo.”

And, because of Petpalooza, I enjoy a job that never feels like work.

Ironically, it was I, who should have been thanking him.

And, because of Petpalooza, I’m happily married to the beautiful, Lenore, the love of my life; my soulmate.

en years. That’s a long time to keep a secret. At least, I think it is, especially for someone like me. I like to talk .. and tell stories. So here goes one ...

How did I know? He told me. Not in so many words... or in barks, or growls. But, in his eyes. After Cosmo had his fill of running and jumping, chasing and being chased, splashing and shaking; he would slowly amble his way back over to me. When he reached my side, he’d circle once, maybe twice, before curling himself into the lush green grass. Then he would look up at me—right at me.

PETPALOOZA • Fall 2014

Because of our many trips to the park I

That story turned out to be Petpalooza.

C.E.D. (Chief Executive Dog) Maximus aka “Max” Publisher Clyde LeFevre Editor Natalie Porter And, because of Petpalooza, I have met and continue to meet incredibly caring, passionate individuals that not only love their pets, but are committed to helping less fortunate pets in need. And because of Petpalooza, I have become the person I was destined to be.

Cosmo, I was blessed to have you in my life. •••••

And finally, what is the secret that Petpalooza has kept for the past ten years? Petpalooza began as a magazine created by one man and his dog, and for the most part, it’s still that way today. Look to the right side of this page and you’ll see a list of Petpalooza’s staff. Other than the contributing writers, all the personel and names are fictitous; just pen names. If you’ve ever tried to reach us by phone or email and it has taken forever to hear back—now you know why. Yes, just one man and his dog, and his dog refuses to do email.

Max: King of the Couch W

hen Petpalooza’s C.E.D. (Chief Executive Dog) wants to take a break from his hectic schedule of eating kibble and chewing on his favorite bone, he enjoys taking a nap on his favorite couch. However, there is one small obstacle to his relaxation plans, his pet mom isn’t thrilled having him on the couch, so she tries a variety of methods to keep him off it. Sometimes she simply closes the door to the family room, but Sylvester, Max’s feline brother, also likes lounging on many of the window sills so that isn’t always the best option. She has tried placing a variety of items on the couch trying to disuade Max from hopping on it, but nothing seems to do the trick. No matter how uncomfortable the obstacles may seem to you or I, Max just plops himself on top of them and proceeds to snore away. Now, you may think Max’s mom should just give up and let him sleep on the sofa; but she’s a determined type of person who doesn’t like to lose a battle of wills (or a game of Scrabble, for that matter.) Her husband mentioned that he could just put a a throw blanket over the couch but, she also believed the couch’s

legs wouldn’t stand up much longer to Max’s 150+lbs of furry mass jumping onto it on a regular basis. So she set about implementing a series of well thought

out plans to outwile the wiley Max. As you can see from some of these detailed photos, her diabolical contraptions made from TV trays, kiddie gates—even a mess from the kids’ school work could not, and would not, deter the mighty Max from achieving his cushy goal.

It’s hard to believe he was ever this small.

So what did she do? She did what any good pet lovin’ mom would do. She threw a nice fluffy blanket on her and her husband’s kingsize bed and said, “Here you go Max!”

Please mail it to my house.

It’s only logical, the bed has a much sturdier frame.

Tips for Keeping Your Cat Happy by Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester

Y

our feline friend is an indoor cat because you know he’s much safer that way, but do you worry that he gets bored, especially when you’re not at home? Try several of these tips, and you’ll be rewarded with a happier, healthier kitty.

C

reate a cat playground. Catnip mice, bouncy balls, feather toys, laser pointers … a trip to the store will reveal more toys than your cat could possibly use. Many cats also like items that don’t cost a thing—crinkled-up paper or foil, cardboard boxes, paper bags, or pieces of yarn. (Just make sure never to leave your cat alone with yarn or string; he might swallow them.) Rotate toys to keep things interesting.

Provide acceptable places for scratching. If you don’t want your cat shredding your sofa, placing several scratching posts around the house is a good strategy. Some cats prefer carpet-covered scratchers, others choose cardboard, and some like sisal. Vertical scratching posts should be sturdy and tall enough for your cat to stretch to his full height.

Offer up a cat’s-eye view.

Cats love to hang out in high places, and cat trees, wall shelves, and carpeted windowsill perches give them great vantage points. You can buy these items at the store or even make your own!

Turn on the TV.

You can find DVDs made just for kitty audiences at pet-supply stores and on pet-product websites. Seeing feathered and furry critters up close and personal will keep many cats entertained for long periods of time. Otherwise, you can leave the 10

PETPALOOZA • Fall 2014

TV or radio on for your cat to provide some background noise when you’re not home.

Bring home a friend.

Your single cat might love to live with another kitty—a readymade playmate, grooming partner, and nap companion. Lollypop Farm has many cats available for adoption who have lived successfully with other cats before, and we have felines of all sizes, colors, and personalities.

Challenge his mind.

Although cats seem to sleep most of the day away, you can exercise their kitty brains while they’re up and about. Did you know that cats, like dogs, can be clicker-trained? (Check out www. clickertraining.com/cattraining for tips.) You can also try teaching your cat tricks and games, like fetch. Some cats are even willing to walk on a leash and harness outdoors!

Give a taste of nature.

Buy a container of “cat grass” or catnip—or grow your own at home—and let your cat munch away. You can also bring inside a section of tree branch thick enough for your cat to scratch. Some cats seem to prefer objects with natural textures to storebought scratchers.

Spend time together. Quality time with your pet is

important, so brush your cat, play with him, and talk to him, too. If you work all day, schedule a play session in the evening. It may prevent him from waking you up in the middle of the night in the hopes that you’ll be up for some playtime.

Make mealtimes more interesting. You can appeal to a

cat’s hunting instincts by placing some of his dry food inside his bowl and the rest of it throughout the house so that he can discover the pieces in different hiding places. As your cat gets better at the game, choose trickier spots.

Help your cat be a cat.

You’ve probably noticed that kitties love to hide. You can make this instinct easier for them to fulfill with play tunnels and cubes, cardboard boxes and paper bags, and cat beds with tops.

Ask Dr. Dori ...

by Dr. Dori Marion

Dear Dr. Dori, I am looking forward to taking my dog, ‘Maple’, out trick or treating with me. I even have the perfect costume picked our for her; she’s going as a pumpkin! My mother told me that I’m not supposed to share any of my candy with Maple. Why is that? What’ll happen if she “accidentally” gets into my goody bag?

Jimmy, age 12

Doorbell Vet • A House Call Veterinary Service

W

ell, Jimmy, your mother has told you the truth. It is dangerous for pets to eat candy. Every year in the days after Halloween, I see a few unfortunate dogs who have gotten into the bag of candy. And they can get pretty sick!

There are several reasons why pets get sick after eating candy. You may already know that chocolate is bad for pets. Aside from the potential for a big belly-ache, more serious complications, such as vomiting, diarrhea or even a potentially fatal condition called pancreatitis can occur. Chocolate contains chemicals called methylxanthines, which include Caffeine. Animals have trouble breaking down methylxanthines, so they can reach high levels in the bloodstream and in the brain, where they can cause excitation, restlessness and a rapid heart rate. If Maple eats enough of this, it can even lead to seizures and death! The danger depends not only on the size of the dog

but also on the type of chocolate: dark chocolate, Baker’s chocolate, and cocoa are the most potent and therefore the most dangerous. Candies that are sweetened with Xylitol can also cause problems. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that’s in lots of candies and gums. It doesn’t take much of this stuff to make your dog’s blood sugar drop. The brain is very particular as to which energy source it likes to use, and if it doesn’t get the real sugar (glucose) it needs, well, it won’t be good for your doggy friend. For reasons we don’t fully understand, Xylitol can also cause liver failure which can be devastating. To keep Maple happy and healthy during Candy Season, it’s important that all “people treats” are kept out of her reach. If she does manage to get into some candy, even if it’s just a single piece of gum, you should call your veterinarian right away! In order for the vet to help Maple as much as possible, make sure that you know exactly what the pet has eaten and how much. If possible, try to find the wrappers.

Paul Lewis

Yes, ‘Bird Brain’ is a Compliment!

I

f you were to call Paul Lewis, the owner of Birds Unlimited, a bird brain you wouldn’t get an argument from us at Petpalooza. Paul is far and away the most knowledgable individual we have ever met regarding exotic birds and their care. Last week we sat down with him to discuss his passion for his feathered friends. P’looza: Paul, how did your love of birds come about? Paul: As a kid, I was intrigued by all types of animals. It didn’t matter whether they crawled, flew, or swam, I wanted to investigate and learn more about them. When I turned sixteen, I got a job at a local pet store that had a Scarlet Mccaw named “Polly” and I became enamored of her. Within a few months, I got my first parrot and my fascination with exotic birds grew even more. P’looza: Did you ever keep tabs on Polly to see how she was doing? 20

PETPALOOZA • Fall 2014

Paul: Actually, the owners ended up giving her to me, and over the years she raised a lot of babies for us here at Birds Unlimited. P’looza: So your passion for raising

and caring for birds has been a large part of your life? Paul: Forty-one years, give or take a month or so. P’looza: Wow, that’s amazing! Paul: It naturally evolved from working at the pet store. Many of the customers knew that I had begun raising birds so they would ask me questions about nutrition and other related care. Sometimes, they’d even have to ask, “Do you know what kind of bird that I own?” P’looza: How could someone not know what kind of bird they own? Paul: It happens more than you might think. It’s not uncommon for birds to be passed from one home to another. Sometimes, the original owner dies, and his or her bird is left to a friend or family member, or sometimes, a previous owner just decides for one reason or another, they just don’t want the responsibility of caring for the bird any longer.

P’looza: Then, choosing to own a bird is a responsibility, not unlike raising a puppy or a kitten? Paul: Absolutely! While there are differences in regards to how you might care for one pet from another, there are fundamental issues that apply to all the pets you have in your home. Everything from proper nutrition, routine health care, and of course, taking time to interact and bond with your pets is essential for both them and you. P’looza: When did you first consider opening a store that only catered to bird people? Paul: Well, in the mid 80’s I started a Hookbill Club for like-minded aviary enthusiasts that grew to 300+ members. I continually educated myself on a variety of birds, their natural habitats, and their required needs for living a healthy and contented life in our homes. It was in 1990 that I first opened Birds Unlimited in Penn-Fair Plaza. P’looza: When did you move to your current location on Empire Boulevard in Webster? Paul: That would have been back in 2008. P’looza: I’m sure you’ve seen a tremendous amount of changes over the years in this specialized field. What do you think has had the most impact? Paul: Two things come to mind immediately. First, the Wild Bird Conservation Act in 1991 brought about a change in how most birds were acquired. The importing of many exotics was banned, and rightfully so. The second factor which has had a large impact is the internet. In the past ten years or so, I have seen a more and more people come into my store with a core base of knowledge that 20 years ago would have taken months or even years of research to find the information that is now floating around for free online. P’looza: Is that a good thing, or is their web acquired .. continued on pg.30 Read Petpalooza online at: www.petpalooza.com

Hansen’s

Puppy Kindergarten helps socialize your puppy! by Debbie Hansen

P

uppy Kindergarten is a great way and a safe way for your puppy to develop socialization. In uncontrolled environments, your new puppy has a greater chance of being exposed to dogs that are not vaccinated. You should avoid taking you puppy to dog parks or other public areas until they have receive their second round of shots which is around 12 weeks of age. While a puppy’s immunity system is still being developed, exposing your puppy to public situations can expose them to infectious diseases such as parvo, which can have devastating results. Dogs have a sensitive period for socialization and exposure between the ages of 3 and 12 weeks. This means being exposing your puppy to different people, noises, situations, other animals, and surfaces at this age will have a positive long term effect on the sociability of your dog. Puppies experience normal fear periods during this time into adult hood. Items which frighten a pup during these times can make a permanent impression, so

22

PETPALOOZA • Fall 2014

please be gentle with your pup while exposing them to different experiences. Should you see this behavior arise; ignore the fearful behavior, allow the pup to escape from what is frightening them, and give them lots of rewards for confident behavior. These normal fear periods will come and go sporadically as your pup matures into an adult. Why puppy kindergarten? Your puppy will have a great foundation for all future learning and a great attitude about their new world. Puppy socialization is an essential ingredient in building and strengthening the bond you will share with your dog throughout their life. The time you put in now will be well rewarded. The bad news? Thought you’d take your puppy to kindergarten and that would result in an obedience-trained dog? It doesn’t work like that. You too must continue to work with your puppy every day. When dogs are not socialized correctly they can develop fear from non-exposure and can cause fear biting. Fear biting my not be seen until the dog reaches 2 to 3 years of age. This has been my experience anyway. A puppy that grows up fearful and defensive can gain confidence

back and overcome early problems with people and other dogs with proper socialization and training. Fear can become a learned behavior and can affect your dog throughout their whole life. It is important to allow puppies to play with other puppies and non-aggressive adult dogs. Interacting with puppies and properly socialized older adult dogs helps your puppy learn proper canine social skills. Dogs that do not learn “dog language” are tense and antisocial and cannot read other dogs well. They are consequently, at higher risk for dog to dog aggression, fearful reactions to other dogs and may become biters. Hansen’s Kindergarten is to help owners be realistic about the capability of puppies along with helping you to understand what dogs can learn at different stages of their life. Puppy socialization needs to be highly monitored by a Certified Trainer so they make sure the puppy is not put in a bad situation. Bad socialization at a young can be extremely dangerous and could make them fearful and aggressive throughout their remaining life.

D og biscuits were invented accidentally in a London butcher shop during the late 1800s. Many readers are familiar with Petpalooza’s current Pet-Mobile, but do you know what kind of car was used as the first Pet-Mobile?

c.) Bingo

According to the story, the shop’s owner was trying to expand his business by creating a new biscuit recipe for his customers. After baking a batch, he tasted them and thought they were terrible. He gave one to his dog, and the dog gobbled it right up. This gave him the idea of making biscuits especially for dogs. He made his biscuits in the shape of a bone and they began to sell rapidly. In 1908, his recipe was bought by an American businessman who introduced it to the United States. The F.H. Bennett Biscuit company was established, and they began selling the dog biscuit under the name Malatoid. In 1911, the recipe was granted a patent. The name was changed to Milkbone in 1915 to reflect the fact that cow’s milk was one of the main ingredients. The Milkbone dog biscuit brand was later acquired by Nabisco Biscuit Company.

n a recent Tuesday, Albert is ready to begin another work day. He is in high demand and the schedule is jammed with people waiting to see him. Each of his clients requires a specialized service. Some can be demanding. One lady just loves to see him jump through hoops.

On the agency’s 60th anniversary in June, the Pet Connections program unveiled a dog “spa” where ARC participants work on basic dog-grooming skills. The agency plans to open it to the public later this year. “Pet Connections is far reaching and benefits those we support with animal-assisted activities and therapy,” said Lora Winghart, associate executive director of program services. “In addition, it expands our volunteer and employment opportunities.”

A

Pet Connections has also worked to create community partnerships. It’s not unusual for ARC participants to be seen with Albert and his colleagues socializing at local hospitals, nursing homes and teaching dog-bite prevention in various community programs. Children at after-school programs read to therapy dogs from Pet Connections. On Tuesdays, a group from the Pet Connections program attends dog-agility classes at Boom Towne Canine Campus in Farmington, N.Y., which allows Ontario ARC participants explore new interests - and allows Albert to jump through a few hoops.

Started in 2012, Pet Connections puts together animals with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ontario County. The program is multifaceted and growing quickly. One branch of the program uses therapy dogs like Albert to help ARC participants achieve a wide range of goals, from improving their range of motion to helping build job skills. In another branch, Ontario ARC participants are producing a line of pet products, such as sewing together dog-training mats and bottling its own line of dog shampoo, Bad Dog™ Shampoo, which is sold on eBay, at community festivals and in local retail outlets. ARC participants are paid for their work and the revenue from their sales is funneled back into the program. 24

work of therapy dogs and handlers. The agency now has 15 volunteer dog-handler teams, who work with agency staff, including two occupational therapists who design treatment sessions around their client’s specific needs. “It is amazing each and every time I see one of our participants working with the dogs,” said Brenda Burton, an occupational therapist who helped found the program and uses therapy dogs in a variety of Ontario ARC programs. ”Our participants have a look of pure love and happiness on their faces and they don’t even realize they are gaining skills to increase their independence.” Not only have Ontario ARC participants made progress toward their goals, said Burton, “it has surpassed any gains I could have made on working with them my own.” The program is thought to be the only one of its kind in the northeastern United States and program managers are confident of its future. “The possibilities are endless,” said Furst.

point down the road there are going to be issues directly due to no proper water changes done on the aquarium.

Aquariums:

Water Wisdom by David Wido, of ‘Pet Friendly’

“My tank is crystal clear, I don’t have to change the water”... Just because a tank may look clean doesn’t mean it IS clean. Everything in the aquarium either ends up in the filter pads or in the gravel. Both should be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis; the gravel should be vacuumed with every water change and the filter media should be changed or cleaned when necessary.

“I top off the tank when it evaporates”... This is nice and easy, but there is no cleaning being done! Here’s and example: Take a puppy and place him in a 10’ x 20’ Kennel. (This is a special kennel. It is sealed and the only air that is brought in is from an air filter. There is 26

If this is a statement you have made, you need to take a look at how you are doing your water changes. Is the temperature of the new water the same as the old? Has the water been dechlorinated? Did you clean the filters at the same time? How did you clean/change the filters? These are some questions that can lead to an answer as to why you lost fish when you did the water change.

“It takes too long”... There is some time involved in cleaning an aquarium, but it doesn’t have to be a long time. A simple 5 gallon change with a small gravel siphon and using the same bucket to drain and fill just took me 7 minutes. Most of the time consumption is caused by not having a plan for the water change. Basic tools for a single bucket change are: a bucket, a siphon, a thermometer, and water conditioner.

ne of the best things you can do for your aquarium, and many people don’t do it at all, is a water change. Removing some water from the tank and replacing it with fresh water allows you to clean up some of the fish waste & debris at the bottom of the tank, remove and dilute the build-up of nitrates in the tank, as well as refresh mineral content that may have been used up. Here are a few examples of why people do not do water changes on their aquariums and some words of wisdom about doing the proper water change:

“Every time I clean my tank I lose fish”...

also a floor drain/filter in a corner that if any food or waste gets in there it can be cleaned and removed from the kennel – If it doesn’t make it in there, well hopefully you get it out when you clean it.) Give him some food and water. So far, so good... right? Now, put nine more puppies of various sizes in the kennel with the first. And give them PLENTY of food. What will it look like in an hour? A Day? A Week? A Month? And Don’t forget those were puppies you put in there. They will create even more waste as they grow! You need to get in there on a regular basis and manually clean out their kennel! It is a little gross to think about, but that is similar to what many aquarium fish go through in their fish tank homes. People set up their tank, add some fish, and feed them everyday. Add some more and feed some more. When the water level goes down due to evaporation they fill it back up. Once a month, maybe they change the filter media. At some

“Once a Year I just take the fish out and clean the whole thing”... This is just a bad scenario all around. Most aquariums should not have to change 100% of the water; too many things can change and go wrong. Not a good idea. To make it easier on you, decide on a regiment you can be happy with. You may hear from a pet store to perform a 25% water change a minimum of one time a month. Please keep in mind that is the MINIMUM water change requirement. What if you did a 10% change once a week? At the end of the month you will have changed 40% of the water! Frequent smaller water changes are better than infrequent large ones. In addition doing 10% a week really only takes a few minutes on all but the largest aquariums. We need to change how we think of aquarium maintenance. Remembering that a proper, partial water change is one of the best things you can do for an aquarium.

Halloween Safety Tip #641

Happy Hollow Weenie

Dogs can have lethal tails, wagging all over the place. Don’t leave any lighted candles or Jack-O-Lanterns where they could be knocked over by a swinging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process.

knowledge not always so accurate? Paul: I think it’s a good thing. The internet provides an amazing wealth of knowledge and insights for anyone considering adding a bird to their home. And yes, while there are some sites that may not be 100% accurate

with their information, it is still a good starting point when first considering a bird as a pet. P’looza: I would think the best starting point would be to come here; Birds Unlimited. Paul: (laughs) Yeah, that works too. We definitely want you to understand what it requires to be a responsible bird owner. I, together with my store manager, Megan Poppoon and the rest of our staff are dedicated to caring for each and every one of our birds, as well as providing our customers with the finest quality toys, treats, foods, supplies and services for their own bird families at their own homes.
