ave you ever taken a different way home, that you’ve never taken before?
Maybe you needed to try a shortcut or just wanted a change of scenery. In these instances, the decision to leave the normal routine was your own. But, sometimes it happens due to unforeseen circumstances; an unexpected detour or a faulty GPS device. Sometimes you find yourself in unfamiliar surrounding and it’s not too enjoyable. In fact, it’s downright scary.

about it. I found myself lost, confused and unable to tell my head from my tail. Unsure of which way to go, I just kept wandering around in circles until I collapsed into a heap. Wearing out not only myself, but also a small circular patch of grass that now laid beneath me. I had been so afraid to make the wrong decision on how to find my way home... I made no decision at all. And that my friend, was terrible.

National Pet Memorial Day Annual Observance - Open to the Public

National Pet Memorial Day, observed each year on the Second Sunday in September, was established by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries in 1972. Although there has been no legislation to make it official, it was thought that there should be a special day to remember our pets; and using the initials SSS helped make it easier for people to remember when the special day is. Since Rush Inter Pet Cemetery opened in 1979 (34 years!!) they have held an annual observance for National Pet Memorial Day. This is a nice day for people to come together, to meet and talk about their pets. Rush Inter Pet is always happy to see families who have established friendships because of the common bond they share... the love of pets. In the past, Rush Inter Pet has held picnics with pony rides, ostriches and dog sled demonstrations. Many times visitors have enjoyed obedience, agility and fly-ball demonstrations. One special milestone was celebrated with a butterfly release! For years now, Rush has remembered our pets with a beautiful candle lighting ceremony hosted by their friend, Rev. Kathy Smith. Families place candles in memory of their pets on a memorial table. Kathy then offers a heartfelt blessing and lights the candles. Also in the past few years, another friend, Fern Hilsinger has offered a Native American Blessing, which is enjoyed by all with her bells, drums, feathers and singing.

Pet Carrier Pointers A
Pet carrier that is safe and keeps your pet out of harm’s way is an ideal choice. Your home, car, or even an airplane can all board this convenient accessory. They prove to be really helpful especially for small pets. It is the best means to keep them secure from other pets thus saving them from potential harm. So, it is important that a pet owner understands how necessary and purposeful these carriers are. There are a variety of basic attributes that the carriers must have.
1. Securely Hold Your Pet In order for your pet to remain secure, a quality carrier should come equipped with a belt to hold the pet in place. If you are traveling in a car, a quick jolt may bang them to the floor or slide them about uneasily. Therefore, it is vital that they remain secure to avoid any unwanted accidents.
2. Protect the Car Interiors To protect the inside of your car from getting destroyed, todays’ pet carriers come with a washable cover. These covers are practical and handy since they keep the interior of your car clean from pet hair and dirt. 12

Convertible pet carriers fold down so they make great spacesavers and also ultra convenient. This makes them very practical and provides great flexibility.
5. Storage Compartments Pet accessories can be easily organized using the storage compartments to prevent frustration when trying to locate an item for your pet. A good quality pet carrier is long lasting and serves its purpose. Training your pets before traveling is necessary if they have never journeyed in a carrier before. Be understanding and help your pet adjust to the different and strange environ-
ment of a carrier; which may take a bit of time for them to adapt to. As you travel on out-of-town trips, your pet will enjoy going with you. And since it doesn’t matter what size your pet is, their carrier will accommodate them comfortably. If given a choice, your pet would always prefer traveling with you in lieu of staying home alone or in the care of someone unfamiliar. Large pet carriers become your pet’s personal lair and can comfortably accommodate your dog, cat, or rabbit while you are traveling by plane, train, or automobile. Generally, the size of the carrier should enable your pet to move freely and to fully stand inside of it. This way, your animal friends will remain preoccupied and amused throughout your long trips and prevent them from chewing items they shouldn’t have. Keeping Your Pet Cool in the Hot Months
H
appy Summer! As temperatures soar, and the sun beats down, be sure you are aware of the dangers of extreme heat to your pets. Always be sure your pets have fresh, cool water to drink. If your pet is outside, be sure to keep the water dish filled, and in the shade, so that it doesn’t get heated by the
sun. Also, make sure there is adequate shelter or shade protection, especially from the midday sun and heat. A fun and refreshing summer treat idea is to freeze your dog’s Kong, or similar toy in a block of ice or frozen chicken or beef broth. You can give the frozen treat to your pooch outside, so they can keep cool and busy in the summer sun. Keep in mind that cars can be potential death traps during both the summer and winter months. Inside temperatures can climb to more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit, even on a mild day, so it’s best to leave your pet at home while running errands during the summer. If you cannot avoid leaving your pet in the
car when it’s hot, be sure you do so for the shortest possible time, no more than ten minutes before at least checking in on your pet, and be sure the windows and vents are open as wide as possible without providing an escape route. If possible, you should also have fresh water available in the car. Pet$aver sells a product called “Too Hot for Spot,” a thermometer for your car that indicates when it is safe to leave your pet in the car, and when it’s too hot or cold. Keeping your pet well-groomed will also help them to stay cool. Long hair and hair mats can make a pet overheated, so be sure to clip and cut or shave them to help cool the animal. Have a great summer with your pet and stay cool!

The summer months are approaching us and we all enjoy the company of our pets at the park, on a walk or the family barbeque. When going on an outing with your pet keep in mind a few very important tips. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS to summer street festivals. The pavement becomes excessively warm to the human feet and we have shoes or sandals protecting the bottom of our feet. Our pets sweat and perspire through the pads of their feet. When the pavement and sidewalks are warm their pads are in danger of burns. During the summer months it is important to have water available for your pet and keep them cool. Hydration is very important for your pet in the heat. Your pet can also suffer from dehydration and heat stroke. Some of the signs of heat stroke include: excessive panting, dark or bright red tongue and gums, sticky or dry tongue and gums, staggering, vomiting, seizures, bloody diarrhea. If you suspect that your pet may be suffering from heat stroke you MUST seek Veterinary Attention Immediately. In the meanwhile, find some shade, use cool water on his/her feet and neck. DO NOT use ice water that may restrict the blood vessels too quickly. Offer ice cubes to lick, do not force them to eat or drink. When a pet is suffering from heat stroke it can affect the liver, kidneys and brain functions.

B
aby bird season is in full swing and not only do we have the widest variety of birds in the store at this time, we also have many new faces walking through our door wanting to check things out. We love seeing other people expressing a genuine interest in the birds and in aviculture in general and are happy to answer questions about everything from behavior to nutrition.
Of course many people who come into the store already have a bird/birds, but many are just in the beginning stages of determining whether or not a bird would be right for them and if so, what species would best fit their life. There are many things to consider when determining if a bird is the right thing for you. For example, What’s your living situation like? House, apartment? Rent, own? How close are your neighbors? Etc. There are a few species that we see do well in apartments, but most are loud! Very loud! It’s the nature of the beast and if noise is a factor then a bird may not be the right pet for you. Other factors to consider are family life. Do you have small children? Are you planning on

starting a family in the next 10-20 years? Most larger species will live much longer than that and many of the larger species don’t mix well with small children. Kids are noisy and messy and so are birds. In general the louder your child gets, the louder your bird will get and when your child is consuming much of the attention that you used to dote upon them, there’s a good chance your bird’s going to get even louder. Not to mention a large beak on an intelligent bird can easily and quickly inflict a lot of pain on a small curious finger. ne lucky pooch’s journey from abandoned dog to beloved pet is tugging at the Internet’s heart last month. On the Redditor website “flibbertygiblet” shared her dog Ringo’s story in a moving series of Imgur photographs. “Was going through some pics today and realized how much Ringo has
really changed in the 8 months I’ve had him. Decided to share, because it’s such a happy tale,” she wrote on Reddit. The photos have since gone viral. The Redditor, who told the HuffPost that she only wanted to be identified by her first name Crystal, said she first encountered Ringo at the end of September. Emaciated and suffering from a bad eye, Ringo was “so scared he wouldn’t look at me,” Crystal wrote on Imgur.

The 30-year-old brought Ringo back to her West Texas home and planned to rehabilitate him before finding him another family. What she didn’t anticipate, however, was that Ringo would soon steal her heart. Two weeks after Crystal brought him home, she said Ringo ‘smiled’ for the first time. “I will never forget this moment. I’m standing there with the treat in my hand, willing him to face his fears and look in my general direction, and he turns to me with this goofy grin on his face. That did it, I was in love,” she wrote in a caption that accompanied this adorable snap.

Recovery was difficult, Crystal says, as Ringo suffers from a blood clotting disorder, which resulted in a “massive amount of swelling.” But soon enough, he’d gotten much better. But the animal lover, who has other pets at home including five cats, insists that she’s done nothing extraordinary. It’s Ringo who’s special, she says. “I’m blown away by the response he’s gotten. He totally deserves it, but its very weird to have people calling me a saint. I assure you, I’m no saint, I just really love my dogs,” she told the HuffPost in an email.
“The goofball bunch. He may not be very good looking to most, but I think Ringo’s the most handsome guy in the world,” Crystal wrote of this recent snapshot.

may face animal cruelty and impounding of your pet. If a pet is in the car, use drive up services when possible and plan ahead to ensure your pet is not left in the car. If your summer time fun is spent at the pool not all dogs are able to swim. Use a flotation device designed for dogs to initiate them to the water. Never put your dog into the pool and expect them to swim. Introduce them gradually to the pool and be sure your pet knows how to get out of the pool if necessary. A pet flotation device is highly recommended when taking your pet out on the boat. If

you pet should fall over board they may panic and not be able to swim. Always be sure to rinse your pet off after swimming. This will assist in removing the chlorine and particles from the local lakes and creeks. If your pet does drink the water from the pool it may also cause and upset stomach and vomiting. Keep your pets clear of lawns that have been sprayed or treated with pesticides or lawn fertilizers. Many of the chemicals contain poisons that can be transferred to their paws and fur. Summertime fun may include fireworks and they may be very disturbing to your pet from a noise and visual perspective.

If you are planning to use fireworks, never use them with your pet in the area. This may cause a fear and alarm to loud noises including thunder and lightning. Once some of these bigger factors have been addressed, the next thing to consider is budget and time. How much do you want to spend? There’s a large range in the initial cost of all the birds we have here. As well as the cost of monthly up keep. It’s important to be realistic about cleaning and handling as well. No matter how your schedule changes, your birds
