t’s not always easy to find the perfect gift for friends and loved ones. Very often, you’ll hear ever so sweetly—the size is wrong, they’ve already read it, or fondue just isn’t their thing. A Little Thanksgiving Tip from Our Zena...

W

e all know how hard it can be to resist our begging eyes and our cute furry face when we want whatever you happen to be eating. We are the masters of the guilt trip and we are hard to resist on any given day, and on Thanksgiving – with the fragrant smell of that really rich dinner swimming throughout the house – the temptation can be that much worse. But this year, even though it kills me to say this bit of advice to you, do your dog a favor and keep him/her away from the items listed below. Your dog might be miffed for the evening, but his/her stomach will thank you the next day.

1. Turkey Skin – Turkey skin can be fatty and hard to digest. If you must share the turkey with your dog, do peel the skin off and cut the meat up into bite-sized pieces. And consider choosing the white meat over the dark for your pooch – it’s a little blander and easier to digest.

2. Cooked Bones – DO NOT give the bones to your

dog. Bird bones are hollow and break easily. Any dog cartoon features Fido carrying a bone around in his mouth, but the reality is that a cooked bone is often brittle and sharp pieces can get lodged in your pet’s intestine.

3. Gravy/Buttery Side Dishes - Fatty foods and trim-

mings can cause pancreatitis in dogs at worst and diarrhea or vomiting at “best.” Try a little turkey broth instead.

4. Aluminum Foil and Plastic Wrap – Dispose of these

when you’re done with them. There are two risks here: one, your pet will be licking the fatty substances off the wrappings, and two, swallowing these can cause an intestinal obstruction.

5. Chocolate – We all know that chocolate can be toxic

to dogs but candy is often left out on tables for guests during the holidays, so be sure to keep bowls filled with chocolate out of reach. Also, keep anything dangerous to a pet out of reach like glass ornaments. .. continued on pg. 13

Petpalooza dropped by Pet Friendly in Hilton, NY to chat with owners, Hamed Ebrahimi & David Wido.

P

’looza: You have a wonderful

pet store. What is it that led each of you down this career path?

Hamed: As a kid I always loved

pets and I would sneak one into our home every chance I got. I remember wanting to have my own animal park one day. Well, I never went for the park, but in a way “Pet Friendly” is the collection I always dreamed of having.

David: I’ve worked in the pet

industry since I was 16, with the exception of a two year span when I was 22. I have always had a fascination for animals especially fish. I have just always wanted to have the best pet shop around.

P’looza: What would you say is Pet

ment of fish. Not only can you find the everyday fish but we often bring in different, or rare fish, shrimps and plants that you can’t find everywhere. What’s neat about our fish department is it’s filtration system. Every tank has it’s own individual filter which eliminates cross contamination and you will end up with

for your budget? Everyone wants to save money, but the cheapest food is often times not the best quality for your pet. That doesn’t mean that the most expensive food is the necessarily the best either. You should always check for ingredients, a brand, and a price point you are comfortable with.

David: We have an amazing assort-

healthier fish at home when purchasing from us.

P’looza: Did either of you have a favorite pet over the years? Hamed: The Doberman I had, named Jackie, was definitely my

favorite pet. I had him in my teens and twenties. Jackie was a great, and loyal friend to me and my family. In fact, one time, he stopped two of my young nieces (3 and 5), that had snuck outside, from jumping into the pool. He went over and blocked them with his body until we saw them outside.

David: I have always had medium to large dogs, but the two small dogs I have now (a Havanese and a Shorkie) are great little pets who love to be with us all the time!

P’looza: What would you most like our readers to know about Pet Friendly?

Hamed: We are best known for our great customer service and

the best selection of pet supplies. We have gathered one of the best teams around and every member of our staff always has your pet’s best interest in mind.

P’looza: David, any final thoughts? David: We are a one stop pet shop. In our 8500 sq. ft. store we

carry over 10000 items! In addition we offer grooming, a variety of dog training classes, an indoor/outdoor doggie day care, a huge selection of fresh water and salt water fish, a nice variety of reptiles, small animals and birds. We have been supporting local adoption groups since the beginning and currently host Pals4pets, Brightstar German Shepherd and Pitty Love rescue groups. Stop in and see us, you will be surprised!

Why doesn’t my dog bark as much as other dogs? Answer: Some dogs just don’t need to talk as much as others. As long as your dog barks normally when he does bark, you probably don’t have a problem. If he tries to bark and it doesn’t sound right (weak, raspy or harsh), then you should have your veterinarian look at his throat and vocal cords. So, not barking much, okay ... but what if the opposite is true? Is your dog barking a little too much?? For more on the subject of barking, check out the article on pg. 20

News Headlines Are Just the Tip of the Iceberg by Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester

og Abandoned in Local Pet Store.” “Puppy Thrown Against Wall and Drowned.” “Wounded Dog Found Locked in a Crate.” Horrible headlines like these from our local media often shock the community into thinking about the plight of animals who are abused. But what makes the news occasionally does not reflect the huge amount of work being done behind the scenes every day. One of the ways Lollypop Farm works to address cruelty to animals is through our Humane Law Enforcement Department. As the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, we are the only authorized organization in Monroe County with an SPCA designation charged with investigating and enforcing the animal cruelty laws of New York State. Some neighboring counties—Orleans and Genesee—do not have a designated SPCA, so we also have jurisdiction to investigate animal cruelty in those areas. Our law enforcement department is funded solely by private donations from compassionate people like you and others in the community; no tax dollars support our efforts to investigate animal cruelty.

Jill Ploof has spent the last 18 years as an animal cruelty investigator and animal control officer, and Officer Bob Benedict was with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years before his 2 years as an animal cruelty investigator. These investigators, along with dispatcher Lee Nearpass, make up the law enforcement team at our organization. Our investigators have the same duties, arrest powers, and limitations as other law enforcement agencies. “We’re not animal control officers,” explains Officer Ploof. “We’re certified New York State Peace Officers who work for a private organization. If we see a crime being committed, we have the authority to make an arrest.” Animal cruelty investigations are “Pierre’, who was abandoned in a local pet store, received much- needed veterinary care from conducted in the same manner as any Chief Veterinarian Dr. Newmark and the rest criminal investigation: by gathering sufof our veterinary and shelter staff. ficient evidence to warrant an arrest and enable the courts to convict a suspect for the crime. 6. The Garbage Pail (probably the entire kitchen)

– A frustrated pet who can’t get a scrap out of his usually-generous parents may be tempted to dig around the trash bin and find a good number of the items listed above. You may even think about keeping your furry friends out of the kitchen entirely. With hot dishes being whisked from one counter to the next, there’s a chance a dog that’s under foot could be burned or cut if something were to shatter.

8. Holiday Plants – I know a few of you already have decked the halls with holly by this time. Know that Poinsettias, holly berries, mistletoe and Cedar Christmas trees are toxic to dogs.

10. Guests Who Mean Well – Educate your less pet-

eyes (and hey, maybe even send them this list). A child may accidentally feed a dog some chocolate and your great aunt might think she’s being nice by sharing her turkey skin. So remember, while this is a time to be extra careful, it’s also the season for happiness & cheer. Have a wonderful holiday!

savvy visitors and those that can’t resist those begging

state police agencies as well. The majority of the complaints involve dogs and cats, but farm animals (especially horses) also make up a large portion. Many situations can be resolved simply through education—explaining what needs to be done for the welfare of the animals to comply with the law and then returning after a period of time to ensure changes have been made. “People will leave their pets outside in the rain with no shelter,” says Officer Ploof, “or think it’s okay to not feed them for a few days because they ran out of food.” Many pet owners are not aware of the laws within New York State that protect animals. When informed of the steps they need to take many people clearly are learning something new. Ploof explains, “They’ll say, ‘It didn’t even occur to me.’ Other times, it’s a little more of a struggle.” “In most cases you can tell pet owners do love their animals,” says Ploof. “You have to believe in people that they truly want to do the right thing. It is never my intent to take someone’s pet from them, but if it’s the best option for that animal, then action must be taken.” Our community needs to work together to hold those who hurt animals accountable for their actions and to get abused pets the care they deserve. From witnesses reporting suspected cruelty, to law enforcement officers investigating crimes, to shelters and rescue groups providing loving care, to prosecutors seeking justice, to families opening their hearts and homes, to donors who support animal cruelty investigation efforts, we ALL play a critical role in helping pets in need.

Did You Know? Tortoises Orbited the Moon Before Astronauts In September 1968, the Soviet Union launched the space probe Zond 5 on a mission to orbit the moon and test conditions as a prelude to a possible lunar mission by cosmonauts. In addition to a life-size human mannequin equipped with radiation detectors, the spacecraft carried a number of living passengers, including a pair of Russian tortoises that newspaper reports initially described as “turtles.” After a week in space, Zond 5 returned to Earth and, despite a failure of crucial altitude detectors, successfully splashed down in the Indian Ocean.

Along with the other creatures, the tortoises were rescued and brought back to the Soviet Union for study. The Soviets revealed that the tortoises had lost about 10 percent of their body weight, and showed an “excessive content” of glycogen and iron in their liver tissue and some changes in their spleens. Otherwise, though, the tortoises remained active and showed no loss of appetite, according to NASA. Check out Petpalooza online at: www.petpalooza.com

Ask Vet t h e

Why does my male guinea pig bite on his cage all the time? Guinea pigs have front teeth that grow throughout their lives. Part of their normal behavior is sharpening these teeth by biting on wood or other hard surfaces. Denying your guinea pig this behavior will cause overgrowth of his front teeth, which is very unhealthy. You can channel your guinea pig’s biting behavior by giving him a hard object, such as a block of wood or carrots. Check with your veterinarian for other ideas for appropriate chew toys or food items.

Barking Voices that Can be Controlled by Mark Forrest Patrick, CDT VA

W

hen clients call for a consultation, barking is usually a concern they would like to address. Barking can be a nuisance and also a frustration for both you and your neighbors. One of the first steps to control the barking is to identify the cause. Is it because there is another dog barking in the neighborhood, is the neighbor outside, is there another dog in the yard, or is someone at the front door or is your dog demonstrating a fearful or anxious bark?

blinds or window coverings over the windows so they cannot see outside. Or redirect the energy to something else. Never reward or recognize the barking behavior. If they are outside and begin to bark recall them inside. If your dog barks when you are separated (in the crate or behind a baby gate) turn your back and walk away. Once the barking stops then turn back and praise for being quiet. Walk away again, if the barking begins and repeat the same step.

can be a dog bed, mat, or blanket, somewhere away from the front door. When conditioned to go to the place be sure to always reward the desired behavior by saying “Good Dog.” Desensitizing from what makes them bark is the key to a quiet family pet. To desensitize, start by identifying the trigger that causes the bark. Then start from a distance where the trigger is in sight but there is no response. Give several treats and say good dog after each treat. Move a couple steps closer and then give a couple more treats repeating the same process. Keep doing this as you move closer to the object that causes a responsive bark. If the object should leave out of sight stop the treats. The purpose is to get as close as possible, rewarding the good behavior and your family pet will realize that the appearance of the trigger resulted in a treat. Attempt to ignore the barking for as long as you can. This includes no physical attention, talking, touch or looking at the barking dog. Any type of

One of the first steps to control barking is to identify the cause.

The number one rule to control the barking is NEVER raise your voice!! When you raise your voice to your family pet you are now barking too. This can cause additional behavioral concerns. This may agitate the dog even more and the barking may intensify or fear may develop. When you dog begins to bark they are barking because at some time they received recognition for barking. This could have been something very simple like giving her a treat to keep him quiet or letting her outside or even speaking to them.If your dog barks at people walking by, correct the situation by placing 20

Make each repetition longer intervals by walking further away. It is important that all family members are consistent with the interaction. The doorbell rings and your family pet barks. Ask a family member to ring the doorbell. When the doorbell rings use a treat to lure your family pet away from the door. As you are luring to a place repeat “PLACE”. Once the term is learned where place is, if the doorbell rings the place will become the expected response. At any time they do not return to the “place” start over by ringing the door bell. attention will be rewarding the behavior. As soon as the barking stops even if it is to take a breath or to lick his lips then reward him with a treat or a toy and “good dog.”

It is important to keep these rules vigilant in your mind. Start small: Set your family pet up to succeed. Playful: Make it a game when you can. Good Behavior: Identify and reward the good behavior.

Consistency: Everyone in the family must be doing the same thing ALL THE TIME. Barking may be reduced with exercise, interactive toys and obedience training. Barking may also be a dog looking for some interactive attention, throwing a ball, frisbee or chase. It is important to understand the behavior when attempting to stop the barking, do they need to go outside? Is it an alarming bark. Keep it positive and seek out professional assistance before the frustration builds between you and your family pet. A tired dog is a happy dog!! On October 8, 2013, Zena Marie, my best friend and confidant, passed away. Zena was special in so many ways. She came to me at just the right time in my life, like she was sent to me for a reason. She was a crazy 3 month old Pug puppy full of energy and she always kept me on my toes. I loved all her crazy antics and the way she yodeled instead of a typical bark. There was no one like her, nor will there ever be. I couldn’t ask for a more faithful, patient and loving companion. She made me laugh everyday even when it was the worst of days. She came with me on almost every adventure, never complaining. We participated in several charity walks every year, and Marshaled in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She even sat on Santa’s and the Easter Bunny’s laps every year for photos. I dressed her up for every occasion and took her with me to cheer people up at the assisted living facility... she was always happy to do it, because she was with me. I could go on and on about how she was one of the best things that ever happened to me, but it is very hard to see what I am typing through my tears. I love you and miss you Zena, everyday... I will never forget you. Thank you for the fantastic memories that will make me smile every time I think of you. Love, Tara (Zena’s Mom) 22

Protecting Your Pets This Holiday Season

T

he holiday season is upon us bringing joy and festivities into many of our homes! As we embrace the holiday spirit and enjoy the decorations, gatherings, and food, it is important to be aware of potential dangers to our four-legged family members and to take precautions to avoid emergency trips to the vet.

One of the most enticing decorations to most pets, particularly cats, is the shiny dangling tinsel on holiday trees.

Unfortunately, if tinsel is ingested, it can cause serious injury and can even be fatal as it twists and bunches inside your pet’s digestive system. The same is true for ribbons and bows on holiday gifts. In addition, bright and colorful ornaments can attract your pet’s curiosity. It’s a good idea to place the smaller, more delicate ornaments up high and out of your pet’s reach, as they can be choking hazards, or worse, break into sharp pieces that can damage your pet’s mouth, throat, and intestines. Keep candles out of reach as well. They can seriously burn your pet and, if knocked over, can start a house fire. String lights and electrical cords may also be a source of danger for those pets who are chewers, causing electrical shock or death.

Holiday Fact:

Delicious foods are always a part of the holiday season, but your pets should be given only pet food, treats, and bones found in pet stores. Keep all human treats out of your pet’s reach, including chocolates, nuts, and candies, which can be toxic to pets. Finally, there are many holiday plants that are poisonous to pets. Christmas tree pine needles, holly, and poinsettias may cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and weakness if ingested. Mistletoe may cause significant vomiting and diarrhea, difficulty breathing, erratic behavior, hallucinations, and can be fatal. The holiday season should be a happy and healthy time of year for you and your family. Avoid an emergency trip to the vet by being aware of the hazards of the season, and do your best to protect your pets from these dangers. Happy Holidays!

BIRD BANTER with Paul Lewis

Megan Poppoon, manager & Paul Lewis

Q. I’m thinking about getting a pet bird, what can you tell me?

A. Well let’s see...they’re loud, they’re messy, they’ll chew your stuff up, they’re loud, they’ll poop on just about anything that’s under them (regularly you), they need daily care and attention, they’re loud and will get louder, they can bite at times. Man, who

wouldn’t want a bird? The noise is the main reason I see people getting rid of their pet bird. Big birds with big personalities need big cages and playpens. If you’ve spoiled your bird from the start then they’ll need and want plenty of your attention. Monthly upkeep can be anywhere from $25.00 to hundreds of dollars. If you live in an apartment, be cautious. If you have small children, be cautious. If you have other pets, be cautious. If you have allergies, be cautious. If you like your quiet times or regularly wake up with a hangover, be very cautious. However, a bird can add lots of enjoyment to a household. A simple canary adds life to the environment, a joy to listen to. The larger birds are very

entertaining and can be the best part of your day when you come home at night. It’s a long term commitment, do your homework, don’t rush into it, have patience. Once you decide on a certain species one great way to research it would be to go to www.youtube. com and simply type in the bird you’re interested in. It gives a pretty good idea what that bird is like. If you do decide to add a bird to your life it will soon be considered a family member for many years to come. We also have a handout here at the store that will give some idea what you need to prepare for. Ask one of the staff for it.

One of these better be for me. And if they know what’s good for them ... it better be catnip.
