Rocinha

the growing district of rio de janerio

B

ecause of the density of its population Rocinha is considered not only the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, but also throughout Latin America and The Americas. This growing “buildup” area is located in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone between the middle and upper class districts of São Conrado and Gávea.

Rocinha, like many other carioca favelas, conceals a multitude of activities and informal economies, which represents the basis of the informal economies of the metropolis itself. The presence of drug dealers keeps the population under control and rules the roost over all inhabitants.

The real order here is not that of the Prefeitura, but that of the drug dealers. The military police do not enjoy a good reputation here because of the frequent shootings (tiroteios) with criminal gangs. This situation causes a large number of prejudices with the rich inhabitants of the neighborhoods: the residents of Rocinha are considered

lazy, involved in drug dealing and theft. Moreover, this is not only the reality of the favela of Rocinha, but that of hundreds of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, however big or small they are. The difference is that everything in Rocinha is greatly amplified because of its enormous size, and is then taken as an example to discuss any other.

The Bedouin Heritage Project

N

omads around the globe are at risk for their survival due to mass tourism, technological advances, sedentarism and political forces... and no one is noticing. The principal mission of Bedouin Heritage Project (BHP) is to safeguard the main features of the lifestyle

and oral expressions of the Bedu that have developed over the course of millennia, and that are being lost due to inevitable societal changes. By understanding their history and culture, we can better understand the middle east, overall.

o be one with the horse, man must first recover his primal instinct. This will allow him to abandon all fear of the ride. The horse, which will also be free to gallop without constraints, will be guided only by instinct, creating a wonderful connection made of spirit and energy.

Aquila Nera Onlus saves racing horses from slaughter because of character issues or poor performances. Once purchased by weight of meat, they are retrieved with ancient Indian techniques and reinserted into the herd, on the land of the association.

T

he Viareggio railway accident took place on the night of June 29th, 2009, when a freight train derailed, causing the emission and dispersion of more than 45 t of LPG, the ignition and explosion of a dense gas cloud, and a liquid pool of fire. This accident resulted in 32 fatalities. The initial blast caused two buildings - described

as houses or small blocks of flats - to collapse while others were set ablaze. The accident happened shortly before midnight, when most people would have been at home. The cause of the accident is unclear, though Italian Transport Minister Altero Matteoli told parliament a defective axle may have caused the railway disaster.

T

he 2009 L’Aquila earthquake occurred in the region of Abruzzo, in central Italy. The main shock occurred at 03:32 on 6 April 2009, killing 399 people, most of them students. The damage was enormous in the medieval city of L’Aquila; including the complete collapse of several buildings.

The heart of the city stopped at that time and everything has remained as it did in the immediate aftermath; the center is still off limits and the buildings have been made safe with external scaffolding. At this time nobody is able to live in the city.
