Re-imagine Providence Production Community

Re-imagine Providence Production Community

2

1 Old urban industrial zoning collage 2 Production Community Axonomatric Render

My thesis interrogates the idea of production into a new architectural language by ‘reimagining’ and ‘re-defining’ the abandoned factories into a new potential hub in the city of Providence. I’m proposing to create a new urban relationship of the city and the idea of production through the lenses of architecture, economy and social issues. By embracing the past idea of life in Industry and production, I’m renovating an abandoned factory into a new type of production community in which exists adjacent to residential space that “work-living” can coexist in new ways. My project embraces small-scale shops and studios with highly skilled workers, provides a collaborative environment where designers and fabricators work together. An ‘Urban Factory’ that has many potentials and social values that fits into the community of artist and innovators. The space could serve as a place for education and engagement for growing artists and innovators as well as a sharing ground to elevate their self-identity and the work culture significance.

Seoul station map from 1904—2006 Seoul station new site plan with two new passage ways to reactivate the station

Remembering the tension between the North and the South Korea in the Old Seoul Station, my project intends to connect and reactivate the new Seoul Station to old Seoul Station both functionally and symbolically. Introducing two passageways for people to move faster, more efficiently, and easier to Seoul Unification Station. The station reminds people and recalling their memories of the Korean War in the past as providing a memorial space and archive about the relationship between the North & South Korea. The building concept of socialist idea is reflected on to architecture as a political display and a potential railway station connecting to North Korea.

1 Providence station conceptual drawing with overlay movement mapping 2 Conceptual model detail photograph

The Exchange Gateway Station is the central gateway of the city of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. My design focuses on a series of perception viewpoints study towards the Station as well as from the station to the city, the station as the window of the city of providence. The main concept of the station is excavating a solid volume by creating matrix and density of information. The transformation of those data is informing the further design.

PATH OF PROJECTION THEATER

Path of Projection Theater

2

1 Study of shadows that were casted on existing elevation 2 Concept diagram of the theater

My concept began with the study of shadows that were casted on existing building. I was interested in its temporality, its double material presence, and path of projections. The main concept of the theater is capturing the doubling of space allowing programs temporal whether it’s being used as a theater or practice space. With it being doubled, the improvisational spaces create an emotional exchange between the person who occupying the area of the building, and the people who are visiting the site.

The concept is to create a multi-functional design that reflects the brand’s visual identity that could be used both as commercial racks for merchandise display and as a partition to divide the space. A basic 60x60cm module in edgy rusted metal is used in various patterns, randomly repeated to create the cage like partitions. These modules are floating in the center of the shop-in-shop space. Black painted glass in a diagonal stripe pattern clads surround walls. A semitransparent grid defines the space and sets it apart from the other brands that are its neighbors.
