The energy industry is recruiting – and not just here in Calgary, but globally! As we know, the energy sector is going through a major transition with many professionals retiring, or planning to retire over the next five years. Where will industry recruit to replace these retirees as well as the staff they need to expand their operations? Welcome to Global Energy Career Expo 2012 – the largest oil and gas recruiting event anywhere in the world, featuring over 90 operators and service companies recruiting thousands of professionals, skilled labourers, and recent grads. During this two-day expo, recruiters will meet more than 6,000 job candidates from around the world. As well, this is the perfect opportunity for candidates to learn job seeking tips, and source new job openings in major corporations, both at home and abroad. Make the most of your time at Global Energy Career Expo by also attending the free presentations at the Career Stage. Here, you will learn about the companies that are recruiting, and get an inside peek at the advantages and benefits of their employment. And, don’t forget, the meeting place for the global oil and gas industry is also taking place this week – Global Petroleum Show runs from June 12 – 14 at Stampede Park. A job interview gives you a chance to shine. What you say and what you do is going to either move you to the next round of consideration for employment or knock you out of contention. It doesn’t take much to make an impression – good or bad. If you haven’t taken time to dress appropriately or if you say the “wrong” thing, it will be over. Take the time to prepare your interview technique including knowing what’s on your resume, being able to present why you are qualified for the job, why you are interested in the company, and practicing staying calm and focused. It’s important to remember that the image the interviewer has of you when he first meets you is the one that is going to last.

Know the Facts It’s surprising how many applicants don’t seem to know or can’t remember their dates of employment or what they actually did on a day-to-day basis at their job. Review your work history – and make sure what you say matches what’s on your resume. Take the time to learn about the company and about the job you’re applying for.

What You Don’t Say What you don’t say can – and will – be used against you in a job interview. If you come to an interview chewing gum or drinking coffee, you will already have one strike against you. Too much perfume or not enough deodorant won’t help either. Not being dressed appropriately or having scuffed shoes will give you a second strike. Talking or texting on your cell phone or listening to an iPod while waiting to be called for the interview may be your final strike and you could be done with your candidacy before you even say a word.

What You Do Say Your verbal communications are important. Do not use slang. Speak clearly and definitely. If you need to think about a response to an interview question, that’s fine. It’s better to think before you talk than to stumble over your words. Practice answering some interview questions so you’re comfortable responding the basics.

Listen It can be easy to get distracted during a job interview. It’s stressful and you’re in the hot seat when it comes to having to respond to questions. That said, if you do your best to listen to what the interviewer is asking, it will be easier to frame appropriate responses.

Using Non Verbal Communication to Impress What you don’t say during an interview is as important as what you do say. What’s important, when interviewing, is to appear professional and attentive throughout the interview process. Before you leave for the interview, make sure you are dressed professionally, neatly groomed, your shoes are polished, and you haven’t overdone (none is better than too much) the perfume or aftershave. There’s more than one hiring manager who won’t hire someone they can smell (good or bad) before they meet them face-to-face. Ref: Alison Doyle, About.com Guide

CAREERS COUNT OPPORTUNITY GET HIRED AT SHELL

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies. Our aim is to meet the energy needs of society in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally viable, now and in the future. We employ approximately 90,000 people in more than 80 countries and territories including 8,000 in Canada. Our people are central to the delivery of our strategy and we involve them in the planning and direction of their own work. For example, Peter Zebedee joined Shell Canada in 2009 because he wanted to be part of a global energy company with a great reputation. For Laurie Neilson, the promise of work-life balance was a clincher when she was recruited six months ago. Peter, Manager of Mine Production for Shell Albian Sands at Fort McMurray, and Laurie, a Senior Mining Engineer with Shell in Calgary, believe that working for Shell is more than just a job. The foundations for their careers were explored and clarified during the formal interview process before they were hired – and that made a big difference to how they became part of the team. “I was attracted by the Shell brand,” says Peter. “But it wasn’t until the formal interview where we discussed my role and my career prospects that I knew I had made the right decision.” For Laurie, the opportunity to balance her job with the demands of raising two children is a big benefit of working for Shell. Managing her time to work from home if necessary means she doesn’t need to choose between career and family. Laurie too was impressed by the in-depth interview process. “I gained a clear vision of where my career will go at Shell,” she says. Peter regards access to a deep global pool of technical expertise as the top benefit of working for Shell. “I’ve always wanted to lead the next generation of energy projects; Shell has given me that opportunity. I am where I wanted to be in my career and confident that it will continue to develop,” he says. Laurie says her career is benefiting from the cross functional nature of Shell’s structure and the supportive management team. “I’m given time to learn and to fit in through support and mentoring. The focus is on team effort,” she says.

Let’s deliver better energy solutions together. www.shell.ca/careers June 13-14 | Calgary TELUS Convention Centre | Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Job Interview Follow-Up ENERGIZE YOUR CAREER

C

O

Wait I Thought the Job Interview Was Over? The average applicant thinks the interview is over when they leave the interview that day. For many average applicants they are right it is over. For the pros they are just getting to the good part. In my sales training we call this next part follow-up. The highest paid salespeople have discovered this is where the big money is made.

Showing Them You’re a Real Pro Following up after the interview separates the amateurs from the pros. The amateurs don’t do it the pros do. How do you follow up like a pro? First, you want to get the business card from the person you interviewed with. The best way to get it is ask the interviewer before you leave. On most cards will be the three things you want. 1) The correctly spelled name and title. 2) The street address. 3) The interviewer’s email address. Second, you send her a thank you email for the interview that very evening so it’s waiting for her when she gets to work the next morning. Third, you make a follow-up phone call to the interviewer on the fifth day after the interview. Let her know of your continued interest in the job and ask if there is any further information she needs from you. If she is not available when you call, leave that basic message on her voice mail. Fourth, you send a mail letter to her ASAP. I call this the “reverse cover letter.” It basically expresses your interest in the job and summarizes some of your strongest points as they relate to the job. About now many interviewers are thinking, “Wow, if this is the professional manner this applicant works this is the kind of person we want.” From that point on, just once a week, you politely alternate between phone, email and mail until she says you got the job or someone else got the job.

The Big Misunderstanding Average applicants misunderstand this follow-up approach. They think, “I don’t want to bother the interviewer they must be too busy.” Wrong thinking! Some companies purposely wait one to three weeks to make job offers. They observe who follows up and how many times and who does not (especially in sales jobs). That is actually the real interviewing part. Average applicants don’t do this. Top paid sales pros know the big sales (and jobs) are achieved in the follow-up. Ref: David Nassief, About.com Guide 10

RECRUIT Careers in Oil + Gas ENERGIZE YOUR CAREER Industry Needs Skilled Workers

O

Canada’s oil and gas industry will need to fill a minimum of 9,500 jobs by 2015, according to a report released by the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada. Highlights from the report, Canada’s Oil and Gas Labour Market Outlook to 2015, state that between now and 2015, Canada’s oil and gas industry is at risk of losing about three per cent of its workforce overall, because of persistently low natural gas prices. The Council’s Executive Director and CEO, Cheryl Knight says, “We’re seeing high demand for – and reduced supply of – skilled workers in specific occupations, many of which are unique to the oil and gas industry.” The Council recently launched a job board on www.careersinoilandgas.com, to help both job seekers and employers connect through job opportunities advertised on the site. While the Council is not involved in direct recruitment, the addition of a job board comes at a critical time for an industry facing labour and skill shortages. Knight remarks, “It’s a great time for job seekers to enter the oil and gas industry. In-demand jobs require skilled workers such as field workers, labourers, operators and trade workers to fill the gap due to retiring workers, growth and expansion of the industry. Through our new job board, job seekers will have access to many career opportunities available in the industry.” The launch of the job board provides job seekers with a complete experience by complementing existing career information, tools and resources that are available on the site. Job seekers will also find the integration of social media useful in their job search quest, making it easy to find and share oil and gas jobs, news and events via Facebook and Twitter. The Petroleum HR Council collaborates with partners to develop strategies, solutions, products and services that help industry develop a sustainable, skilled and productive oil and gas workforce. The Petroleum HR Council is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sector Council Program. Careers in Oil + Gas - Booth # 1627 40
