MESSAGE FROM Aberdeen
7 August 2012 On behalf of Aberdeen City Council and the citizens of Aberdeen, I am delighted to welcome you to our city. As we prepare to welcome delegates to World Heavy Oil Congress 2012, Aberdeen will, as always, feature prominently during the exhibition and congress. As a strategic global energy hub, it is our pleasure to play host to such a key event in the industry’s calendar and further strengthen the city’s position as a centre of excellence in energy technology development. Aberdeen City Council works locally, nationally and internationally to position Aberdeen as a world class destination in which to live, work and invest by providing support services to businesses to help create the conditions for sustainable economic growth. By supporting the local energy industry in this way we aim to grow and sustain jobs and wealth in the city through the transfer of technology and know-how into other sectors. The City of Aberdeen is proud of its association with the energy industry and I hope that this year’s exhibition will be an informative and profitable occasion for all who attend. As well as the exhibition and congress sessions, World Heavy Oil Congress offers a wide programme of breakfasts, topical luncheons and networking opportunities that I would encourage all delegates to take advantage of. While visiting the city, I hope you take the opportunity to explore Aberdeen and to enjoy the countryside that surrounds it. Our historic buildings and parks, restaurants, theatre and lively nightlife offer a unique way of relaxing and will, I’m sure, make your stay in Aberdeen a memorable and pleasurable experience. In closing, let me wish you all well for the week ahead and encourage you to visit the Aberdeen & Scotland stand at the exhibition where we look forward to welcoming you. Yours sincerely, Lord Provost George Adam City of Aberdeen

World Heavy Oil Congress 2012
Message from the Event Organizer
True Collaboration for a Sustainable Industry It is our pleasure to welcome all invited officials, conference delegates, exhibitors, sponsors, visitors and students to Aberdeen, Scotland for the 2012 World Heavy Oil Congress, 10-13 September. This year’s Congress is a true example of collaboration amongst business and technical professionals from the UK and internationally. The mission of the Congress is to provide a forum every 18 months for the global heavy oil community to address the industry’s challenges and opportunities. We are pleased to share that, in addition to a strong contribution from the countries working in the North Sea, over 25 countries will be represented at the Congress, including Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, India, Kuwait, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Trindad & Tobago, USA, and Venezuela, among others. The theme of World Heavy Oil Congress 2012, Sustainability Through Innovation and Collaboration, was developed from our international heavy oil committees. This year’s Congress is comprised of a Business Conference Committee featuring ten high profile experts led by 2012 Business Conference Chair, Jack Stevenson – Heavy Oil R&D Portfolio Manager, Chevron; and a Technical Committee of 24 members, chaired by K.C. Yeung – Director – Oil Sands Technology, Dover Operating Corp. Our theme encapsulates not only the goal of the conference, but the goal of a global industry working to achieve a common vision for the sustainable development of onshore and offshore heavy oil resources. The 2012 Congress offers a unique experience of new insight from business leaders and government officials, topical innovations from technical experts in 148 presentations, hospitality and networking events, and an exhibition with international companies providing leading expertise, technology or services for the exploration, production and refining of heavy oil. Aberdeen, with its reputation as the energy epicentre of the UK, and with offshore development of heavy oil in the North Sea being conducted, has proved to be a stellar location in which to host World Heavy Oil Congress. The “Granite City” has much to offering outside business opportunities, and we know that you will find the city and surrounding areas rich in cultural history, with an array of fantastic attractions, all against beautiful backdrops of both rolling hills and scenic coastline. We truly appreciate the support of our hosts, Aberdeen City Council and the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre team, for the enjoyable experience we know you will have during your stay in Aberdeen. We want to recognize the efforts and enthusiasm of our Official Congress Stakeholders, Executive Committee members, Sponsors and Exhibitors. With their leadership and support we have organized a compelling conference programme, educational opportunities, technical tours and festive networking events for our Scottish and International guests. During the week, we invite you to make the most of this opportunity to connect with delegates, exhibitors and visitors through the many networking events and social gatherings organized. We wish you a memorable experience, and we thank you for your contribution to this forum and marketplace at which the community can share, learn and challenge one another.

World Heavy Oil Congress 2012
Message from the Business Chair
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to World Heavy Oil Congress. I invite your active participation and sharing in our industry’s best practices over the coming days. With heavy oil, extra heavy oil and bitumen representing over 50 percent of the world’s known resources, the future of the world’s energy supply is shifting. Over the next 20 years we will continue to see the rise of unconventional oil. Supplemented by alternative energies and conventional oils, heavy and extra heavy oils will become the fuel for the world’s growing global energy demand. As the expectations for the energy industry continue to rise, it is increasingly important for the industry to work individually and collaboratively to address the needs for responsible development. Delivering world class environmental, social, and economic performance will be key to gaining acceptance from local communities and a broader group of stakeholders, without whom we cannot achieve success in our projects. Developing and accessing a skilled labour pool is also essential to achieving our goals. We continue to face increased challenges in this regard and planning for a dynamic mix of talent to move our projects forward is paramount. Our imperative is to meet these challenges head on. As an industry, we are continuously working to improve how we manage greenhouse gas emissions, limit water use, reduce tailings, and reclaim land faster. We’ve made strides in training and developing skilled workforces. Can we do better? We can always progress further; and with smart, strategic investments in technology and infrastructure, and long-term partnerships across the industry we continue to meet the world’s energy needs. Now is the time to assess our progress and to consider how we will shape the future of our industry as a whole. World Heavy Oil Congress provides a welcome forum to examine our global challenges and opportunities. I look forward to rich discussion and the sharing of ideas and best practices.
Jack Stevenson Heavy Oil R&D Portfolio Manager, Chevron 2012 Business Conference Chair

Most oil companies see heavy oil as a source of energy, a consumable that vanishes the instant it’s used. We see heavy oil as a tool for creating sustainable value. Visit us on Nynas stand 1309A. Taking heavy oil further. www.nynas.com
Message from the Technical Chair
Welcome to World Heavy Oil Congress Technical Conference in Aberdeen. You will find that this conference contains quality papers on various aspects of heavy oil and oil sands development around the world - Asia, Europe, Middle East North America and South America. With the tremendous response to our Call for Papers and after a lengthy review from the Technical Committee, we are able to field 148 papers for presentation. As usual, we have a few sessions dedicated to Thermal Processes, as they remain the most common recovery processes for heavy oil around the world. You can also find thermal related presentations in other sessions such as Production, Drilling & Completion, Reservoir Monitoring and Research and others. In our Emerging Technologies and Non-Thermal sessions, there are papers on various new recovery processes and extraction techniques such as chemical water-flooding, electro-magnetic heating, combustion and even the use of nuclear reactors. For those interested in offshore heavy oil development, we are pleased that we are able to offer two sessions on Offshore Development at this conference. We also have a session on Environmental Technologies. In this session, you will find the collaborative activities in the heavy oil and oil sands industry to reduce the environmental impacts. There is no doubt that you will find a lot of meaningful information from these presentations. I would urge you to scrutinize the Technical Program, circle the ones which draw your highest interest, and try to figure out how to get to as many talks as you can. Finally, I would also like to remind you to get additional value by networking with the other delegates. Have a great time!
