As a Latina, Yovanka Lopez always knew she was facing an uphill battle because of her ethnicity and gender. Before coming to Cristo Rey New York High School, these characteristics diminished her confidence in herself and her abilities, but thanks to the overwhelming support from CRNYHS faculty, staff, and peers, she has been able to confront and

overcome those negative feelings. Throughout her time here, Yovanka has been an active member of Student Council, and now as a senior, she has earned herself the role of President of the club. In this leadership role, she hopes to help other students find their confidence and realize their full potential in the same way the CRNYHS community has helped her.

“Everyone at Cristo Rey wants to see you grow and become a better person, so they’re always motivating you in a variety of ways.

That motivation and ‘hyping up’ has really helped to build my confidence.”

At the core of our mission is the ideal of cura personalis, or care for the whole person. Cristo Rey New York High School was founded with the goal of bringing about social justice by closing the opportunity gap in education for the population we serve. We strongly believe that achieving our mission requires nurturing and encouraging the total development of our students — spiritual, social, cultural, emotional, physical, and intellectual.
