REDEFINING

PREP.

Since opening our doors in 2004, Cristo Rey New York High School (CRNYHS) has been redefining what it means to be a “prep school.” At CRNYHS, our definition of prep means more. CRNYHS disproves the notion that prep schools are only for the economically advantaged, as we strive to give students exclusively from low-income backgrounds a college preparatory education and real-world work experience. With our practice of never raising the price of tuition and our innovative Corporate Work Study Program, CRNYHS is confronting the education opportunity gap headfirst.

At CRNYHS, we’re not just preparing our students for college; our mission goes well beyond that. We are preparing them for careers, and for life.

LETTER FROM

THE BOARD CHAIR Michigan, University of Virginia, Tufts, Northwestern, and the United States Naval Academy

Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, As we begin our 15th academic year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the progress we have made as a school in delivering on our mission and share my thoughts on our exciting future as we welcome our new President, Dan Dougherty. Since opening our doors in 2004 with a vision to close the achievement gap in education in our community, our leadership team, faculty, staff, and volunteers have constantly challenged themselves to deliver a rigorous academic and Corporate Work Study Program which prepares our students for college and beyond. Our results speak loudly: •

To date, 98% of our 861 graduates have enrolled in college

78% of our graduates have either graduated from college or are on track to graduate

Our alumni have attended the likes of Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Georgetown, Boston College,

Through our Corporate Work Study Program, our students have worked at leading financial services firms, law firms, accounting firms, media and entertainment firms, and health care companies

Our six-year college graduation rate of 64% is more than quadruple the national average for low-income individuals

30 of our CRNYHS graduates have received or are pursuing post-secondary degrees

These results are the by-product of years of planning, commitment, and passion for our mission by our iconic founders, Father Joseph P. Parkes, S.J. and Bill Ford. After 14 years as our leader and President, Fr. Parkes turned the reins over to Dan Dougherty on July 1st of this year. With the recent completion of our capital campaign which fortified our endowment, our school has never been more financially secure. The impact Fr. Parkes has made on CRNYHS and on those of us who have had the honor of working with him is immeasurable. The best way for us to show Fr. Parkes our appreciation for his years of love, dedication, and support is to continue to advance the mission of CRNYHS. As we welcome Dan Dougherty as our second President of CRNYHS, I believe you will find his passion for our mission and his vision for our future to be inspiring. Dan appreciates our challenges as a school and the expectations that our constituents have for our students. Dan and I very much look forward to continuing to deliver on the CRNYHS mission that you have entrusted with us. On behalf of my fellow Trustees, our leadership team, and our faculty, we thank you for your tremendous support of CRNYHS and your commitment to helping us transform the lives of our students. With gratitude,

Kyle L. Miller Cristo Rey New York High School Board Chair

LETTER FROM

THE PRESIDENT since their “prep” isn’t just academic, it’s also professional. The Corporate Work Study Program redefines the college prep curriculum and introduces students to careers in top-flight corporations. Since 2004, Cristo Rey New York truly has been redefining college prep education. Our outstanding English teachers instruct that “redefining” is a present participle that can be a verb form (as in the preceding sentence) and also an adjective. As an adjective, “redefining” describes the kind of “prep” our students receive. How is “prep” at CRNYHS “redefining?” A CRNYHS education transforms those who experience it. It offers the opportunity to redefine one’s future, to alter the trajectory of one’s life.

Dear Friends, The stereotypical college prep school evokes images of ivy-covered buildings surrounded by expansive lawns in a bucolic setting. Expensive tuition restricts access to the affluent and influential. Families send one generation after another to such schools, sometimes to study in libraries bearing their name. For fourteen years, Cristo Rey New York High School has been reimagining preparatory education. The theme of the 2017-2018 Annual Report is “Redefining Prep.” In these pages, you will read how our modest building in East Harlem opens its doors to promising young men and women who lack the finances to afford traditional prep schools. Rather than following a well-worn path, virtually all will be first-generation college attendees. Our Lions spend hours studying, but they think of the library as their office

This report will chronicle several of those life-changing stories. For those of us blessed to work at CRNYHS, the experience redefines us, too. Our students inspire us with their hard work, their care for others, and their spirit. I hope your experience of CRNYHS similarly inspires you. Thank you for making the work of CRNYHS possible. Your support breathes life into the redefined prep that propels our students toward promising futures. Since the school’s founding, Fr. Joseph P. Parkes, S.J. has connected the resources you provide with the deserving students who turn opportunities into successes. Fr. Parkes concluded his term as president in June 2018, but not before redefining what it means to prepare one’s successor. I will be forever grateful for the time Joe spent with me over the past year to execute the presidential handoff. Eli Manning of our beloved New York Football Giants couldn’t have done it better. Thanks, Joe. Viva Cristo Rey New York High School!

THE CRISTO REY

DIFFERENCE Fulfilling a Worthy Mission Cristo Rey New York High School is a Catholic, co-ed, college-prep school, part of the national Cristo Rey Network. • We serve students of all faiths who have demonstrated the potential and motivation to achieve success and who do not have the educational background or financial means to attend another private, college-prep school. • Guided by the spirit of care for the individual, cura personalis, we challenge all our students with a rigorous academic curriculum and a demanding work-internship program. • Our ultimate goal is that our students will graduate from college and become professionals for others, transforming the world for the good of their families and society.

Serving the Underserved Cristo Rey New York is committed to serving the most underserved of our population in terms of both income and education. The average family income of our students has never exceeded $35,000 and 86% of current students are eligible for Federal free or reduced lunch. A traditional prep school education is out of financial reach. Further, the majority of our 369-person student body comes to Cristo Rey from under-resourced middle schools in East Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx, with severe learning gaps in their education. CRNYHS’ rigorous curriculum and individualized approach to each student’s education ensures that our graduates leave prepared for college and careers thereafter.

Mitigating the High Cost of College Prep To help offset the cost of their education, each CRNYHS student works one day a week in an entry-level job at a top-flight firm in New York as part of the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). Their hard work allows us to keep our tuition the lowest in Manhattan at $2,000. Additionally, 85% of our families receive financial aid and on average pay only $1,125—much less than the average $22,496 tuition for New York State private schools.1

College was always the dream, but it seemed out of reach before I came to CRNYHS. Just a few years ago, the college application process seemed incomprehensible to Justo Hierro, a senior and an aspiring first-generation college student. He credits the support and encouragement of the Cristo Rey faculty and staff, who from day one set high expectations for him. As a freshman, Justo looked to the upperclassmen at Cristo Rey New York High School

as his mentors. He saw their success and realized that with the help and guidance of Cristo Rey, college was within reach. Two months into his senior year, the College

I know precisely what I want to do and how I’m going to do it. Counseling Office has become his second home. He has visited several college campuses and has carefully crafted his college list. His counselors will work with him to navigate each step of

the admissions and financial aid processes, ensuring that he makes the right college choice academically, financially, and socially. Justo came to Cristo Rey to fulfill his family’s dream that he would attend college. Cristo Rey has ensured that this dream will become his reality.

The Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program shaped my career path and defined my future. Lianne Figueroa, Class of 2012, began working at the law firm Kramer Levin as a freshman at CRNYHS, and she’s been there ever since! When Lianne first started, she was a shy 14-yearold, stepping foot into a corporate office for the first time. Through the Corporate Work Study Program, she learned how to communicate more effectively and found that she could be an accepted and valued member of a

professional environment even at a young age. Working at Kramer Levin simultaneously taught her how to be resourceful and efficient when working

Working helped give me a sense of confidence and I will keep that for the rest of my life. independently, and how to collaborate and be creative when working as part of a team, skills she would need for college as well as to grow in the workplace.

After graduating from CRNYHS, she continued to keep in touch with her supervisors and mentors at Kramer Levin, which led to internships while she attended SUNY Binghamton and eventually a full-time post-grad offer. She is now a Legal Recruiting and Diversity Assistant at Kramer Levin.

THE CRISTO REY NEW YORK CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM

OUR STUDENTS EARN 40% OF THE COST OF THEIR EDUCATION. A critical component of the Cristo Rey New York experience is our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP), an innovative educational and financial model that allows students to receive a private, college preparatory education while getting invaluable work experience. Begun as a funding mechanism, CWSP has blossomed into the cornerstone of a Cristo Rey education. Each student works one day a week in an entry-level job at a top-flight firm in New York. Students gain unparalleled work experience and mentorship in corporate America. This experience is an essential part of our students’ growth—it enables students to contribute directly to the cost of their education while exposing them to the professional world—learning firsthand the values of hard work, responsibility, and ambition.

Engaging Our Corporate Work Study Clients We have clients from almost every sector, ranging from banking to fashion to publishing. Our CWSP team matches students to jobs where they think they will be most successful. We have a dedicated Managing & Sales Director who recruits new clients and who is a valuable liaison for current clients. We work hard to ensure that the program provides real value to our clients as well as our students.

Balancing School and Work for Students Students go to work on the same day each week with their whole grade, except for freshmen, who are split up and work on two separate days. This makes scheduling classes as simple as possible for the upper grades while giving freshmen the additional individualized support that they need from the CWSP team during their first year of work.

The ethos of “cura personalis” stayed with me long after my time at Cristo Rey. Victoria Velazquez, Class of 2010, learned to be a “professional for others” at Cristo Rey. As a result of her high school service work tutoring at a neighborhood Catholic middle school, Victoria decided that she wanted to pursue a career that would allow her to help others. After graduating from Union College with a BA in Psychology, she obtained her Master’s in Mental

Health Counseling and is now on her way to becoming a fully licensed psychotherapist. CRNYHS instilled in her the value of giving back, especially to those in her community.

I am committed to using my skills and passions to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.

“Helping others develop the skills and mental stability to be able to one day achieve their goals and dreams and become better people truly makes me happy.”

She carries that with her into her professional life each and every day.

CURA PERSONALIS: CARE FOR THE WHOLE PERSON Through our curriculum and the modeling of our staff, we emphasize our human responsibility toward others. Founded from a desire to bring about social justice by closing the achievement gap in education, Cristo Rey New York High School is dedicated to the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, care for the whole person. While this starts with providing our students with a top-notch college prep education, it does not end there. At CRNYHS, we call each student to develop all their gifts—social, emotional, spiritual, and physical, as well as intellectual. Then we challenge students to put those gifts to work in service of the larger community. “Men and Women for Others” is at the heart of the Cristo Rey mission. It means words alone are not enough—those words need to be put into action. Not only in the classroom or workplace, but through service for others. We actively teach our students how to become caring members of their communities through our social justice and service learning programs.

Social Justice We provide grade-level experiences on an annual cycle of “learning – meeting – doing” justice. Students demonstrate “learning” by studying important curricular themes; “meeting” by attending school-hosted or sponsored encounters with those working for justice aligned with a given curricular theme; and “doing” by participating directly in service alongside faculty and staff.

Service Learning Cristo Rey’s Service Program provides students with opportunities to engage in activities to learn to be “professionals for others.” From group service projects freshman year to 20 hours of service as upperclassmen, our students are involved with a multi-faceted approach to service learning throughout their four years at Cristo Rey.

16

Cristo Rey New York High School

We serve and support our students and, in turn, we teach our students to serve and support each other and their communities. We teach them to take responsibility for their lives and to lead with integrity. We encourage them to be active and engaged members of their communities and to learn to be “professionals for others.

Coming together to support our students. “Our legacy gift to Cristo Rey is meant to support the long term viability of a school that combines three key interests: supporting underprivileged young men and women in our community, focusing on education as a way of improving human outcomes, and linking the importance of business opportunities as a “hand-up” in furtherance of an egalitarian society. Furthermore, making a legacy gift gives us income now—psychic income, knowing that we are helping an organization that really works!” — Campbell (Trustee) and Jannie Gerrish

Our support of our students does not end when they receive their high school diplomas. CRNYHS’ extensive Graduate Support Program (GSP) has become one of the defining features of our school, guiding our first generation college students through their college journey. Before seniors graduate, they must complete the GSP’s College 101 curriculum, where they learn the basics of being a successful college student. After graduation our Director of GSP visits our alumni on their college campuses and reaches out to address any social, financial, academic, or emotional challenges they might have.

SUPPORT

POSITIVE CHANGE. When I first started at Cristo Rey, I found the college prep work extremely challenging because English was not my first language. The work is still challenging, but it’s gotten easier with all of the support provided to me at Cristo Rey.

SUPPORT CRISTO REY. Your gift to Cristo Rey New York High School has an immediate and purposeful impact. It provides a quality, Catholic, college and career preparatory education to students in New York City who have limited educational options. Through your support, you become part of the positive change in their lives! DONATE The cost to educate each student is more than seven times the amount of the annual tuition of $2,000. We have not raised tuition since we opened in 2004, and more than 85% of our families receive financial aid. Visit www.cristoreyny.org, mail a check, or call us to make a donation. To include us in your estate, investment, and retirement planning or to make a memorial gift, contact Brigid Quinn at bquinn@cristoreyny.org or 212.457.2806 to learn more. Cristo Rey New York High School is a 501(c)3 organization, and your contributions are fully tax deductible to the extent provided by law. Tax ID: 03-0495750.

BECOME A CORPORATE WORK STUDY PARTNER It’s easy to become a corporate partner. If your firm has entry-level clerical work that needs to be done, if you want to operate more effectively and efficiently, and if your company wants to make a difference in the community, please consider giving our students this life-changing chance to work with you. Contact Catalina Gutierrez at cgutierrez@cristoreyny.org or 212.457.2810 to find out more.
