LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends of Cristo Rey New York High School: As we begin our 16th academic year and second year under the leadership of President Daniel T. Dougherty, I remain very inspired by our success in delivering on our mission and ever more excited about our future as a Catholic, college preparatory high school in East Harlem, New York. With the completion of our 2018-2019 academic year, I am proud to announce that we have seamlessly executed our leadership succession plan which began over three years ago. This past June, our co-founder and the inspiration behind the creation of our school, Mr. William P. Ford III, stepped down as our principal. Our principal search committee, led by Dan Dougherty, appointed Dr. Frances E. Clemente as the second principal since our founding. My fellow Trustees and I feel very fortunate to have secured such talented individuals in Dan Dougherty and Fran Clemente to succeed our iconic founders Father Joseph Parkes, SJ and Bill Ford and to lead our school into the future. My appreciation runs deep to both the president and principal search committees, our founders, past and current Trustees, endorsing congregations, benefactors and our faculty for their tireless energy and commitment in helping us complete our succession plan on schedule. As I always do, I would like to take a moment in my letter to reflect on the progress we have made as a school in delivering on our mission. Our results continue to speak loudly: •

To date, 98% of our 943 graduates have enrolled in college

77% of our graduates have either graduated from college or are on track to graduate

Our alumni have attended Princeton, Brown, Cornell, UPenn, Tufts, Northwestern, and many other outstanding universities

Through our Corporate Work Study Program, our students have worked at leading financial services firms, law firms, accounting firms, media and entertainment firms and health care companies

Our six-year college graduation rate of 63% is more than quadruple the national average for low-income individuals

36 of our CRNYHS graduates have received or are pursuing post-secondary degrees

These results are the by-product of years of planning, commitment, focus and passion for our mission by our past and present leadership teams. As a Board, we continue to challenge ourselves and the leadership team to maintain our high standards, close the gap in our areas of need and make certain that our business model and strategy assure our future success and sustainability. Our future success depends on the tremendous ongoing support and commitment we receive from our past and current Trustees, Advisory Committee members, endorsing congregations, Corporate Work Study sponsors, college and university partners, benefactors, and staff, faculty and volunteers. Thank you for all that you do for our school and our deserving students. You are making a difference and helping us close the education opportunity gap in our community. With sincere gratitude,

Kyle L. Miller, Board Chair

Cristo Rey New York High School

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of Cristo Rey New York High School: “Level Up!” — the theme of this year’s Annual Report — initially unsettled me. Despite getting an intuitive sense of its meaning, the phrase made me feel remarkably ignorant of pop culture. Not being a video game player, the reference to acquiring skills and experience to advance in a game eluded me. Nor was I familiar with R&B performer Ciara’s song, “Level Up.” Or the “Level Up” TV show and movie. Or the self-help book with “Level Up” in the title. In the pages that follow, we offer you a glimpse of what “Level Up” means at Cristo Rey New York High School. “Level Up!” springs from a foundational characteristic we hope to instill in all our students — that is, to be open to growth. The Profile of the CRNYHS Graduate at Graduation, a document included in our student handbook and a touchstone at awards ceremonies each year, highlights openness to growth as a core value of our community. Students develop a humble appreciation of their own giftedness as well as the curiosity to seek new experiences. With confidence, students accept new challenges and opportunities to enrich their perspective. At the CRNYHS board meeting in September, Trustees heard how three current students “leveled up” this past summer. Aniyah Battle ’20 reported on the two classes she took at Boston University that intensified her excitement for college. Christine De La Pena ’20 shared her experience in Chile as part of the Student Diplomacy Corps. Kwame Assinor ’21 expressed his new-found appreciation for community development shaped by his program at Georgetown University. These are but three of many examples of our Lions being open to growth and “leveling up” thanks to the opportunities available at CRNYHS. Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, one of CRNYHS’ endorsing congregations, said, “Be yourself, but make that self exactly what God wants it to be.” Cornelia inspired her Sisters and students to value their intrinsic goodness while also challenging them to become the best version of themselves. Growing in the understanding and fulfillment of God’s plan for us is a perpetual exercise. We strive for but can never achieve perfection. Whether the area of growth is spiritual, social, cultural, emotional, physical or intellectual, graduates of CRNYHS view learning as a life-long pursuit. Opportunities for our students to “level up” will never cease. The same can be said about Cristo Rey New York High School. With your abundant support, the school’s first fifteen years have been wildly successful, but we do not rest on our laurels. As we look to the future, we have begun to imagine what is next. How can we serve the students in our care more effectively? What skills and habits of mind will they need to be successful in college and the workplace in the decades to come? What more can CRNYHS do to close the opportunity gap for motivated students from under-served communities? How can CRNYHS become an even more powerful agent of change in the fight against poverty? How does CRNYHS “level up?” Thank you for your generous support of Cristo Rey New York High School. Thank you for creating the conditions and providing the resources that allow our Lions to “level up.” Thank you for being indispensable partners in the work we share together. Thank you for inspiring us always to seek God’s greater glory. Viva Cristo Rey New York High School! Gratefully,

Daniel T. Dougherty, President

UP! LEVEL CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL

Level Up! means aspiring to and fulfilling a worthy mission to address directly the opportunity gap for New York City students who have the motivation but lack the means to attain a quality, college-preparatory education.

4

Fulfilling a Worthy Mission

Addressing the Opportunity Gap

Cristo Rey New York High School is a Catholic, co-ed, college-prep school, part of the national Cristo Rey Network.

Most CRNYHS students begin ninth grade behind academically — but not for lack of trying. A vast majority of our students have attended underresourced schools for their entire lives before coming to CRNYHS. It is our school’s mission to serve these students based on their potential, not their reading level or their family’s ability to pay tuition. In our sixteen years, we have never raised our tuition from the original $2,000, even though the cost of educating one student at CRNYHS now exceeds $17,000. To make this high-quality college-prep education affordable to our families, students work one day a week at a corporate work study position and earn about 40% of the cost of their own education.

We serve students of all faiths who have demonstrated the potential and motivation to achieve success and who do not have the educational background or financial means to attend another private, college-prep school.

Guided by the spirit of care for the individual, cura personalis, we challenge all our students with a rigorous academic curriculum and a demanding work-internship program.

Our ultimate goal is that our students will graduate from college and become professionals for others, transforming the world for the good of their families and society.

Almost two-thirds of our incoming students enroll at CRNYHS performing below grade level and yet

nearly 100% of CRNYHS’ students get back on target, graduate high school, and enroll in a four-year college. Enroll

98% of CRNYHS’ 943 graduates have enrolled in college, more than double the national average of their socioeconomic peers.

75% of CRNYHS’ graduates have either graduated from college or are on track to graduate, with a college graduation rate (63%) more than four times that of their socioeconomic peers (15%). From the very beginning of their CRNYHS journey, our students are “leveling up, both inside and outside the classroom. They are challenged by their teachers in the classroom and their supervisors in the workplace to keep pushing forward, achieving goals one day and setting new ones for the next. 6

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO

LEVEL UP? ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY & RIGOR CARING, WHOLE-PERSON SUPPORT ACCESS TO THE CORPORATE WORLD It is no small feat for our students to go from performing below grade level to graduating from high school and matriculating and succeeding at impressive colleges and careers. It takes the unique combination of a demanding academic model, a comprehensive, whole-person approach, and an introduction to the corporate world of work to make it happen. CRNYHS has perfected this equation over the past fifteen years and the results — our incredibly successful students — speak for themselves.

makes Cristo Rey remarkable is that they really push “ What you to become the best version of yourself.

My teachers always say, ‘you can do more!’ and I’m learning that I really can.”

Cristo Rey New York High School

At Cristo Rey New York High School, students only have four days of classes each week to make up for the gaps in their education and catch up to their peers at other elite high schools, but that doesn’t stop them from coming out ahead. Our curriculum is specifically designed to support our student

population and challenge them to develop their unique gifts and talents. We ensure that they are receiving the same quality education that is offered at other more expensive college-prep schools so that when they graduate, they’re heading to the same colleges and universities as their more affluent peers.

Alumnus, Class of 2014

Current Job Title: Client Relationship Associate, CRNYHS

When Kevin Montes was a freshman at Cristo Rey New York High School, taking the initiative to simply ask his coworker a question was a nervewracking prospect. Nine years later, Kevin has conquered those fears and is more than confident in his communication skills. Working at places like Credit Suisse and PVH Corp. as a high school student opened his eyes to new career

opportunities, which led him to study business in college and pursue a career in the corporate world. Today, Kevin is back at CRNYHS, working in the CWSP office — the department he credits for changing his life trajectory. In his new role, he works with students everyday as a direct example of the success that comes out of CWSP.

CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROVIDES TUITION AND

EXPERIENCE

CRNYHS’ Corporate Work Study Program started as a unique way to fund our school. Now, it is the cornerstone of a CRNYHS education. CWSP is an innovative educational and financial model that allows students to receive a private, college preparatory education while gaining invaluable work experience. Students are matched in jobs where they can succeed and where they have supervisors to support and challenge them throughout the year. For one day each week throughout the school year, every student works in an entry level position at a top-flight firm in the New York Metropolitan area. In turn, students gain unparalleled work experience and mentorship in corporate America. This is an essential part of our students’ growth, learning at just fourteen years old the values of hard work, responsibility, and ambition.

Special Thanks to The Kelly Gang! The Kelly Gang’s mission is to raise funds each year for different worthwhile causes that lend a helping hand to those in need. This year, Cristo Rey New York High School was grateful to be chosen as The Kelly Gang’s honoree, and with their support, we were able to raise over $140,000 at their annual benefit in March.

HELP US GET TO THE

NEXT

LEVEL Support Cristo Rey New York High School The cost to educate each student is more than eight times the amount of the annual tuition of $2,000. We have not raised tuition since we opened in 2004, and more than 85% of our families receive additional financial aid. Your gift to CRNYHS has an immediate impact. It provides a quality, Catholic, college and career preparatory education to students in New York City who have limited educational options. Your support helps them get to the next level and transform their lives!

high school, I struggled. Since joining the soccer team, I have learned that at Cristo Rey we are always a family and we never give up, whether we win or lose. This is true both on and off the field.
