he revolutionary three-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol engine has been named ‘2016 Engine of the Year’ in its category for the second consecutive year. Developed by Peugeot parent company PSA Group, the 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol was named Engine of the Year in the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category by a panel of international journalists at the 18th International Engine of the Year Awards, held in Stuttgart during June. The award received for the second time is just the latest achievement for the engine model, nearly 370,000 of which have

been manufactured at the Française de Mécanique plant in Douvrin, France. “Receiving this award for the second year in a row is a testament to our technological expertise and efforts to optimise our engines and reduce their environmental footprint, while at the same time delivering high-quality performance,” said Christian Chapelle, Vice-President, Powertrain and Chassis Engineering, PSA Group. With 120 patents to its name, the threecylinder PureTech turbo petrol engine cuts fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 18% when compared with its four-cylinder petrol predecessor.

The award-winning engine also holds two fuel economy records; the first claimed in Europe in 2014, with a manual transmission vehicle, while the second came in China this year, when an automatic model travelled 1,878 kilometres on a single tank, achieving record-breaking fuel economy of 2.93 litres per 100 kilometres. First launched in March 2014 on the Peugeot 308, the PureTech engine is now fitted on more than 60 different models worldwide. Locally the PureTech engine is fitted on the Peugeot 208 and 308 and is expected in the new Peugeot 2008 due early 2017 (see p28).

hundred years after racing driver Dario Resta won the Indianapolis 500 in a Peugeot L45, the Peugeot Sport development team has marked the anniversary with the incredible Peugeot L500 R HYbrid concept. The concept car pays tribute to the incredible “Charlatans” team, of which Resta was a part, and which brought Peugeot three victories on the famed Indianapolis 500 circuit between 1913 and 1919. The L500 R HYbrid’s 500 bhp plug-in hybrid petrol powertrain features two electric motors (one up front and one at the rear) plus a 270hp petrol engine, offering up peak torque of 730Nm. With its wide track, low profile (it stands just one-metre-high) and light weight of 1,000kg, the Peugeot L500 R HYbrid has been created for pure performance, taking just 2.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill, and 19 seconds to cover 1000 metres. The concept car’s sleek lines run from the lion badge on the radiator grille toward the driver to end in a streamlined rear feature (a nod to the car’s century-old ancestor) highlighting the three distinctive rear lamp claws that form part of Peugeot’s design identity today. “With the Peugeot L500 R HYbrid we’re

paying tribute to Peugeot racing exploits dating to the early 20th century,” says Matthias Hossann, Peugeot’s concept car and advanced technology chief. “Inspired by this spirit of performance and innovation we wanted to convey a sculptural, elegant and technological view of the future of Peugeot motor sport.” The Peugeot L500 R HYbrid pays tribute to the L45 and Peugeot’s illustrious racing past in the USA, when the company claimed three victories in the 500-mile event at the Indianapolis speedway, the world’s second-oldest racetrack. The L45 (so-called because of its 4.5-litre engine) superseded the L76; a dedicated racing effort by Peugeot that coincided with the arrival in 1912 of a team of intrepid young drivers, known as the “Charlatans”, who produced

a whole series of race wins and heralded a new age in racing engine design. The L76 was the first car in the world to use a four-cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder plus a dual overhead camshaft, and was the first modern racing car to reach 190 km/h. The L500 R HYbrid is a timeless Peugeot, extending to the future with its forward-looking design, overtly acknowledging the past prowess of its predecessors, and proudly showing off some of Peugeot’s present-day design identity features such as the front light signature that will mark the 2017 Peugeot 3008 SUV, or the striking blue and black colour scheme as a reference both to the 500bhp petrol hybrid drive-train and to the colour of the original L45.

eugeot has believed for many years that the in-car cabin environment is just as important as the driving experience. This has led to a rethink in the way Peugeot designs its interiors – with the driver placed at the centre of the cabin design. The result is Peugeot’s next-generation i-Cockpit cabin concept. A compact steering wheel is key to the design’s ergonomic success, offering the driver more agile manoeuvrability and an improved driving sensation. With the driver’s arms no longer required to be so open and wide to grasp the steering wheel, the breadth of movement during manoeuvres is reduced, thus making the driver more

08

responsive and in a more natural and relaxed position behind the wheel. The i-Cockpit concept also incorporates a 12.3-inch high-resolution digital head-up instrument panel with futuristic graphics. This displays all relevant information right in front of the driver, meaning he or she doesn’t have to look away from the road to receive specific in-car information, leaving the driver to fully concentrate. In concert with the smaller diameter steering wheel, these ergonomic details increase driver comfort by reducing tiredness. A large 8-inch touchscreen that intuitively displays all comfort controls, such as stereo, air conditioning and other convenience functions is also integral to the

concept, offering natural control of all the vehicle’s information and equipment. The result is an incredibly streamlined, modern and technologically intuitive instrument panel. The choice of high-grade materials, premium manufacturing quality and by reducing the amount of physical buttons, the Peugeot i-Cockpit increases driving pleasure, agility and concentration. These features are topped off with a centre console incorporating a high-end design aesthetic. A set of elegant chromed toggle switches attract attention, while their metallic feel exudes high quality. This sensation continues with the modern, ergonomic gear lever, which responds to the lightest of touches.

Naturally the new Peugeot i-Cockpit concept is compatible with the best technologies currently available on the market, including 3D navigation connected to voice recognition, and the possibility of transferring navigation and direction indications directly onto the head-up screen. The system allows occupants to operate hands-free devices with voice commands, augmented by the automatic management of text messages (reading, sending). Mirror Screen functionality means that Apple

CarPlay, Mirrorlink and Android Auto systems are all compatible with the i-Cockpit. The new Peugeot i-Cockpit is also capable of pushing the sensory experience even further. At the simple press of a button, nearly all senses are immediately engaged, by configuring the intensity of lighting and the inner chromatic atmosphere, with different musical signature settings, with seats that offer multipoint massage functionality and, lastly, with an elegant fragrance diffuser.

Two atmospheres are offered to the occupants: “Boost”, for dynamic driving, and “Relax”, for a calmer driving experience. Both atmospheres are entirely customisable, making it possible to go beyond the driver’s and passengers’ pleasure and make their on-board experience unique, engaging and unforgettable. The new Peugeot i-Cockpit is the embodiment of what future driving cabins will be like, and the materialisation of tomorrows’ Peugeot interior.

eugeot Design Lab and Swiss scooter design company Micro have teamed up to design the e-Kick; an electrically assisted scooter to meet the challenge of a constantly evolving urban environment. The e-Kick provides an unprecedented mobility experience, helping to provide a fully independent transport solution to cover the “last mile” of any journey. The revolutionary new scooter is designed for customers who are looking for mobility solutions that go hand in hand with their vehicle. A bespoke “dock-station” allows the user to store the e-Kick in the boot of their Peugeot SUV; it will even recharge the scooter’s battery while the vehicle is driving. Outside the car, the scooter can also be recharged in about an hour. Peugeot has historically placed mobility at the heart of its mission. It’s the only brand in the world that sells bicycles, along with two and three wheel scooters to round out its wide array of passenger and light commercial vehicles. Swiss company Micro essentially re-invented the modern scooter. For the last 20 years it has been designing high-quality

innovative urban mobility solutions for the entire family. “e-Kick is not just designed to be a mobility solution, but a truly multi-modal scooter designed to link all the other solutions together,” says Cathal Loughnane, Peugeot Design Lab Manager. “The two handles used in driving mode fold up into a single handle that allows the scooter to roll on one wheel, making it effortless to hop from your home, to your car, to a train, to your work.” Peugeot and Micro share a common vision of future urban mobility solutions and combined their expertise to design the e-Kick. The e-Kick electrically assisted scooter – which only weighs 8.5kg – offers an active, natural, and flexible user experience, created to optimise intra-city journeys by adapting to any circumstances. The e-Kick includes multiple major innovations including a “Motion Control” electric assistance system developed by Micro, whereby the Lithium-Ion battery is built into the ultra-thin platform with the motor integrated directly into the rear wheel. The e-Kick optimises the level of electric

assistance based on user movements and provides a range of 12km. It allows for speeds of up to 25km/h and is equipped with a foot-brake that is accompanied by a regenerative engine braking system that recharges the battery. The innovative handlebar, designed by Peugeot Design Lab, allows the e-Kick to be easily folded in a few seconds. Unveiled during the global launch of the new Peugeot 3008 SUV, the e-Kick will be sold by both Peugeot and Micro in selected territories.

308R HYB RID

P

eugeot Sport has created the first compact hybrid hatchback combining driving pleasure, radical performance and controlled consumption. The car is the 308 R HYbrid. This hybrid petrol plug-in pushes back the boundaries of sporting prowess in the segment, offering truly extraordinary performance, with four-wheel drive, three motors and two types of energy: a unique compact hatchback with supercar performance. Since it was first revealed in 2015, Peugeot Sport has continued to develop the car’s powertrain, which combines a petrol engine with two electric motors. The 308 R Hybrid’s 500hp of power and 730Nm of torque can now be accessed via three driving modes (ZEV, HYbrid, HYbrid Sport), with the assistance of Launch Control supervised by the driver within the car’s Peugeot i-Cockpit. Peugeot Sport was challenged to develop an efficient petrol hybrid plug-in powertrain and set new limits in terms of performance. The result is on a par with that challenge and is quite simply astounding. Developing 500hp with four wheel drive, the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid has its speed limited electronically at 250km/h, going from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4.0 seconds and covering 1,000m from a standing start in under 22.5 seconds. In spite of all that, CO2 emissions are just 70 g/km. The car is perfectly balanced, with 60% of its weight to the front and 40% to the rear, and offers incredible weight-to-power ratio barely reaching 3.1kg per hp. “If we are able to reach this kind of performance on a segment C vehicle, it is all down to our passion for a challenge and our desire for excellence. The Peugeot 308 R HYbrid is part of a very select club of cars reaching 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds,” says Jean-Philippe Delaire, Head of Development of the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid powertrain. To achieve a time of only 4.0s for 0 to 100 km/h, it is essential to transmit the power to the ground

THE NEWS

“The Peugeot 308 R HYbrid is part of a very select club of cars reaching 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds.” by controlling the front wheel skid. With the petrol engine maintaining revs to deliver its full potential, the front electric motor kicks in as soon as the grip limit is reached. Then functioning as a generator, this electric motor consumes the extra thermal torque and maintains the front wheels at their optimum traction. The exterior is breathtaking. The grille features a unique checked pattern, while side air scoops integrate the sequential LED indicators and the central scoop sports the car’s signature 308 R HYbrid badge, carved into the block. In profile, the lines, which have been cut to fit tightly around the mechanical components, catch the light as they draw your eye over the vehicle. At the rear the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid is remarkably understated yet just as radical. The rear stance underscores the car’s road handling while a narrow spoiler at the top of the tailgate reinforces the aerodynamics. The air scoops and the body sills are embellished with a touch of white ceramic-look material, emphasising the car’s dynamic character. In addition to the three drive modes, the 308 R HYbrid also features a Launch Control strategy to achieve the best standing starts. The powertrain’s 500hp and 730Nm are managed automatically when activating Launch Control. To do so, when the vehicle is at zero speed, the driver engages HYbrid Sport mode, deactivates ESP, presses the brake pedal, engages second gear and accelerates hard, with the petrol engine regulating automatically to 4,000rpm. The driver then just has to release the brake pedal to start the stopwatch. The 308 R HYbrid is cloaked in an intense blue, developed using fluorescent pigments and glass particles. This colour recalls both the hybrid powertrain and the shade historically reserved for French competition vehicles. On the rear doors, the blue is matched with a matte black, giving a different interpretation of the car’s clean lines, a trademark of the most extreme cars from Peugeot. The Peugeot 308 R HYbrid is awe-inspiring proof of the engineers’ and designers’ talent and of the excellence of the Peugeot 308. A Peugeot is always about motion and emotion. ith a remarkable 1:1 powerto-weight ratio (875kg and 875bhp!) and the ability to go from 0 to 100km/h in just 1.73 seconds, Peugeot’s new supercar – the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo – promises a unique driving experience for Gran Turismo 6 (GT6) gamers exclusively on PlayStation®3. With more than 15 cars already featured in the Vision Gran Turismo line-up, the lion brand has risen to the latest challenge put out by Kazunori Yamauchi, the man behind the flagship driving game, who asked automakers to design a car specifically to commemorate the game’s 15th anniversary. Peugeot designers teamed up with Peugeot Sport engineers to craft an outstanding supercar that has all the hallmarks of a high-performance endurance racer, brought to life in glorious high definition in GT6.

Available exclusively in six colourways, the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo is part of a free update for Gran Turismo 6. Virtual racers have the chance to take the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo for a spin on no fewer than 40 outstanding tracks with 107 layouts. At first glance, the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo reveals a striking monolithic silhouette sculpted to sweep aside air resistance, standing just 104cm tall, with the

notable absence of nearly any aerodynamic features. The body design alone is enough to effectively stick the car to the road. Mounted directly behind the driver, the 3.2-litre V6 turbo engine feeds its 875bhp to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system comprising 22-inch alloys in the front and 23-inch alloys at the back. While the car exhibits phenomenal acceleration, deceleration is equally impressive, with four ventilated Brembo carbon discs (380mm in the front and 337mm in the rear) providing the stopping power. This, coupled with the lightweight design and super-responsive steering, makes this the ideal steed to saddle in taking up the GT6 challenge. he Peugeot Fractal is an electric urban coupé which reveals a prospective design for the Peugeot i-Cockpit, exploring the sense of hearing in addition to sight and touch. The result of a collaboration between various acoustic sound artists and experts, the Peugeot Fractal showcases unprecedented attention to acoustics in automotive design. The result is a level of auditory perception that further enriches the driving experience to make it even more instinctive, creating an unparalleled on-board experience. StelLab, a PSA Peugeot Citroën research unit, and high-end audio specialist FOCAL, have designed an innovative ‘9.1.2’ system

combining a high-quality 9.1 set-up consisting of 13 speakers featuring tactile bass systems built into the back of each seat. The 9.1.2 system makes driving more instinctive by enriching information through the use of acoustics. This additional feature of the Peugeot i-Cockpit is characterised by the ‘spatialisation’ and ‘dynamisation’ of sound which, say the system’s designers, allows the driver to absorb and understand information more effectively. The 9.1.2 sound systems provide a completely immersive experience by individually controlling each speaker. This digital sound technology simulates the human ear. Sound sources are created virtually and

their location projected to enhance the information conveyed to the driver. So for example, when the navigation system is in use synthesised voice commands appears to come from some distance in front of the car. As the vehicle travels along, the source moves toward the cabin and shifts to the side to which the car needs to turn. At intersections, it is positioned in close proximity, inside the car, to alert the driver to an immediate change of direction. Spatialisation ensures that the sound matches the path of the vehicle. The system developed by StelLab configures the different sound sources separately for the Peugeot Fractal’s coupé and cabriolet modes. To tap its full potential, the ‘9.1.2’ system features a 9.1 system comprising, in the front, three mid/high-range speakers, two tweeters, two woofers and a subwoofer, and, in the back, two midrange speakers, two tweeters and a woofer. FOCAL also created a linen-fibre membrane for the speakers to render sound faithfully. The technology – called FLAX – is characterised by a very natural sound without colouration, a richness in the mid-range reproduction and robust sound in the bass. The spatial restitution in the passenger compartment is provided by seven FLAX speakers and four inverted dome aluminum magnesium tweeters, while two subwoofers take care of the bass register. This assembly is driven by four highly compact FD amplifiers, consisting of a total of fourteen amplification channels and a total of 1600 available watts. Additionally, in a world first, the Peugeot Fractal incorporates a two-channel tactile bass system into the back of each seat. Developed by American entity SubPac, the tactile bass system offers a tactile, physical sensory experience, allowing the bass to travel through a solid medium rather than through the air. This means the sound waves reach the inner ear through the listener’s body, giving the seat occupant a more immersive and personalised bass experience, without causing unwanted interference in the surrounding environment.

n-line with Peugeot’s product-led reinvention, the new Peugeot 3008 SUV is set to join the Peugeot 308 (2014’s European Car of the Year), in the stable of highly acclaimed vehicles and brings with it a completely new proposition for the Peugeot SUV range. “The new Peugeot 3008 SUV is still some months away from launching locally, but we already know it will be a game-changer for our business,” says Simon Rose, Peugeot New Zealand Divisional Manager. “We are hearing such strong reviews and comments coming from those fortunate enough to have previewed it in Europe as part of recent media launches. We’re confident this new SUV model will more than deliver on customer expectations for our market and ultimately attract a number of new buyers across from other brands.” The new Peugeot 3008 SUV is the very first SUV to sit on Peugeot’s all new EMP2 platform and will be combined with a sixspeed automatic transmission. It’s a true SUV too, with loads of interior space, a safe high driving position and genuine off-road capability – an important feature for many Kiwi drivers. Peugeot’s Advanced Grip Control enhances traction with special optimised grip levels;

Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand. Additionally, the new 3008 SUV features Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC), which keeps safe control over the vehicle and its path when steering down steep slopes. Like the Advanced Grip Control settings, this function is easily controlled by a button on the centre console. With a range of diesel and petrol engines available, the new 3008 will offer powerful performance combined with ultra-low consumption. The vehicle is also larger than its predecessor, both inside and out, and features an enormous 520-litre boot. Because Kiwis expect their SUV to be practical, the new 3008 features clever 2/3 and 1/3 split-folding rear seats that fold to reveal a flat boot floor. The fold-flat rear seats provide a load-space that is three metres long; handy if you’ve got a particularly long load. If you need to keep your things separate in the boot (muddy sports gear for example), the innovative two-position sliding floor makes for easy use of available space and you can even sit on it comfortably without getting dirty. The entirely restyled interior is spectacular, with a futuristic dashboard, 8” touch screen, numerous state-of-the-art driver aids, an amazing premium sound system, panoramic sunroof and the latest generation Peugeot i-Cockpit design with personalisable head-up instrument unit and driving themes. From the outside, the all new Peugeot 3008 SUV sports a fresh new look and features larger wheels, raised ground clearance, wide protective bands (bumper skirts, wheel arches, bottom of doors), uniquely shaped roof bars and a stylish ‘Black Diamond’ roof.

20

The new Peugeot 3008 SUV is being produced in the Sochaux plant and will be presented to the public internationally for the first time at the 2016 Paris Motor Show later this year. Due to arrive in New Zealand at the start of 2017, final specification and pricing will be confirmed closer to its local launch. Expectations are that the new 3008 will become a key model for New Zealand, with a lifestyle aesthetic that will find favour with many buyers here. “Indications are we will have an exceptionally high level of standard driver assistance and active safety functions versus many of our competitors, and we’ll be featuring both petrol and diesel variants from launch. “This is a fully formed SUV, designed from the ground up to be the best on offer. We’re very proud to have such an advanced SUV as part of our range and we can’t wait for Peugeot fans and new customers alike to see the new 3008 for themselves early next year,” concludes Rose.

eugeot New Zealand has welcomed two new high performance versions to the extensive 308 range: the dynamic New 308 GT and iconic 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport. These new versions reflect Peugeot’s global move up-market and effortlessly embrace Peugeot’s racing heritage. “The GT and GTi badges have long been synonymous with our history and their return marks a real turning point for the brand”, said

Simon Rose Division Manager for Peugeot New Zealand. “To have accomplished a record for power-to-weight ratio in the 270hp 308 GTi model is testament to what can be accomplished by developing a high performance chassis and engine, tuned in conjunction with the motorsport arm of the business; Peugeot Sport.” The new 308 GTi generated great anticipation among enthusiasts ahead

of its arrival in New Zealand; a modern interpretation and celebration of Peugeot’s lengthy history of producing true performance hot hatches. From the legendary 205 GTi to the latest 208 GTi and RCZ R, Peugeot has sold its high performance models to over 800,000 customers worldwide. performance models – used their engineers’ and motorsport expertise to create the 308 GTi with the sole ambition of creating the ultimate hot hatch driving experience. The 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport offers drivers a performance enhanced 1.6-litre turbo engine, producing 270hp (200kW) coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox, Torsen limited-slip differential and improved chassis. The 308 GTi sets a new record for powerto-weight ratio in its segment, at just 4.46kg per unit of horsepower, and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.0 seconds, covering 1,000 metres from a standing start in 25.3 seconds. The power plant is the most efficient in its category too, capping CO2 at 139g/km or

6.0-litres/100km. Meanwhile the 308 GT possesses all the strong points of the 308 range while adopting a sportier look. This car is built to be an efficient daily driver that is still capable of morphing into a bundle of fun at the press of a button. The new GT is fitted with a 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 engine, EAT6 automatic transmission and delivers 180hp (133kW) at 3750 rpm, with its maximum torque of 400 Nm arriving at just 2000rpm. With exceptional fuel consumption of just 4.0-litres/100km (combined), the GT offers superb driving pleasure and efficiency. “The entire Peugeot dealer network is extremely excited to have a true performance hot-hatch worthy of the GTi badge back in

the business,” concludes Simon Rose. Available at authorised Peugeot New Zealand dealers, the new Peugeot 308 GT is priced from $49,990 + ORC and the Peugeot 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport from $58,990 + ORC.

he compact Peugeot 2008 SUV offers up a unique and cleverly packaged proposition. Featuring the revolutionary PureTech turbo 2016 Engine of the Year, the forthcoming 2008 will mix the style and compact footprint of a city car with the robust practicality of a larger SUV. “The new 2008 SUV model will meet the needs and demands of many Kiwi motorists looking for a small SUV with the benefits of ease-of-access and better road visibility through its extra ride height,” says Peugeot New Zealand Divisional Manager, Simon Rose. “Even though it’s a compact SUV, the Peugeot 2008 still boasts flexible loadcarrying ability, with boot space for things like golf clubs and bikes. “Combine these practical elements with the new award-winning Puretech engine and an

efficient six-speed automatic gearbox, and the new 2008 SUV promises to tick all the same boxes an SUV of a larger size – and price point – would.” On-board technologies in the Peugeot 2008 will make everyday life easier for Kiwis too. Comfort and convenience features include the Mirror Screen feature via MirrorLink or Apple Carplay, which displays certain apps from the driver’s compatible smart phone on the car’s touch screen of the car. To enhance safety in urban areas, the forthcoming Peugeot 2008 is equipped with Active City Brake technology; an automatic urban braking system which utilises a short-range laser sensor (LIDAR technology) installed on the upper part of the windscreen to detect obstacles such as moving or stationary vehicles, travelling in the same direction and in the same lane. fails to take action, and up to 30km/h, the Active City Brake engages full auto-braking to reduce speed. This will help to reduce the severity of an accident – or even avoid it altogether. Also offering the Peugeot 2008 driver a greater degree of confidence in the city, Park Assist makes the most of the 2008’s compactness in town. Once Park Assist has been activated, the driver selects the type of manoeuvre required on the touch screen (parallel parking or exiting the parking space), after which the ultrasonic sensors measure the dimensions of the available spaces to notify the driver of a suitable location. Park Assist then guides the vehicle via the action of the electric power steering system, and all the driver has to do is view their surroundings and control the car’s progress. When reversing, the standard reversing camera illustrates the dimensions of the vehicle on the screen using colour guide lines. all occupants. Peugeot’s i-Cockpit design ensures the driver enjoys an intuitive, agile, flexible and safe driving experience. Up front, the 2008 features a robust vertical front grille with the Peugeot lion at the centre. Decorated in a bright chrome finish, the grille is integrated into the bodywork and also highlights the integrated aero-spoiler. Meanwhile, at the rear the tailgate opens to expose a low loading sill (just 60cm high) above the rear bumper. The bumper forms part of the solid black protective belt which encircles the new 2008 and adds to its more rugged character, as do integrated scuff plates and wheel arch extensions. ‘Rugged’ is still complimented by sophistication though, as seen in the detailing of the upper body: window sealing strips, roof bars, rear door mouldings and a spoiler all enhance this compact crossover’s premium look. For the new 2017 model, the Peugeot 2008 Allure grades will be complemented by an all-new GT Line. The GT Line trim will add a sporty, chic theme with exclusive 17’’ Eridan gloss black alloy wheels, along with gloss black elements that replace the standard chrome effect (including the front grille surround, fog light covers, mirror casings and roof bars). GT Line front grilles will also include Black Chrome accents with red Peugeot lettering, while the rear stainless steel scuff plate is decorated like the exhaust tailpipe. Finally, the ‘GT Line’ badging is proudly displayed on each front wing and on the tailgate. The Peugeot 2008 will also feature Grip

Control, an adapted traction system which gives the 2008 its versatility on all types of terrain and in all types of weather. Grip Control optimises traction according to the terrain by efficient operation of the front wheels. The system leaves the driver in charge at all times, the intelligence of the traction technology can be adjusted at any moment. This is done by scrolling through various drive modes, depending on the environment the 2008 is driving through at any one time. Standard mode is intended for standard road conditions with a low slippage rate, Snow mode instantly adapts the slippage of each front wheel to the grip conditions encountered, then when the vehicle reaches 50km/h, the system reverts back to Standard mode. The All-Terrain mode is for travelling confidently on slippery ground (such as mud or wet grass). It facilitates the starting of the vehicle in these specific conditions by transferring as much torque as possible to the wheel with the most grip. Acting as a limited slip differential (LSD), it is particularly suitable for country roads and active up to 80km/h. Sand mode maintains wheel spin on both driven wheels simultaneously to allow progress on soft soil and limit the risk of getting stuck in the sand. This mode is functional up to 120km/h, after which it switches back to Standard mode. All of this technology and style goes to show that the new Peugeot 2008 will be so much more than a straightforward compact crossover when it arrives in New Zealand at the beginning of 2017.

he two-wheel drive Peugeot 2008 DKR has triumphed with Stéphane Peterhansel and JeanPaul Cottret at the wheel. The win comes exactly 25 years after Stéphane Peterhansel’s first victory (on a bike) and sealed the endurance racer’s 12th Dakar success (six on a bike, and six in a car together with co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret). During the epic South American race, the Peugeot 2008 DKRs claimed nine stage wins out of a possible 12, including seven one-twos and two one-two-three victories. Elsewhere Cyril Despres and co-driver David Castera, along with Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena were the big surprises of the Dakar, finishing seventh and ninth

respectively. With a 9500-kilometre route taking competitors two weeks to race through Argentina and Bolivia – taking in extremes of weather and altitudes that peaked at 4800 metres – Team Peugeot Total took on a fearsome challenge with one of the most accomplished line-ups ever seen in Dakar history. With 17 Dakar victories between them, the crews of Stéphane Peterhansel/ Jean-Paul Cottret, Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz and Cyril Despres/David Castera were joined by nine-time world rally champions Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, making their debut on the event. Peugeot’s crews gave it their best shot at the wheel, while engineers learned valuable

lessons during their first participation in South America last year, and worked non-stop ever since to improve the car. Lower, wider, longer and more powerful, the updated Peugeot 2008 DKR didn’t take long to show the extent of its potential. The car kept faith with its two-wheel drive configuration against the traditional 4x4s, and was instantly at ease on every type of surface, underlining the effectiveness of the technical choices that were originally made. The Team Peugeot Total crews claimed the lead of the rally right from the first proper special stage. Using all of his traditional rallying expertise, Sébastien Loeb was the first to claim a stage win, but Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz were very close behind. During the first week the Peugeot 2008 DKRs consistently occupied the top three places on the six stages run, inspiring the whole team.

“The second week of the rally offered further adventures with a more varied route, taking in an increased amount of off-piste action and an itinerary through the dunes.”

By the time the rally reached the rest day at Salta (following some challenging stages at high altitude in Bolivia), the top-three line-up consisted of Loeb, Peterhansel and Sainz. The second week of the rally offered further adventures with a more varied route, taking in an increased amount of off-piste action and an itinerary through the dunes. Through this tough terrain, both Sebastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz bid farewell to their hopes of victory, because of a roll and a mechanical breakage on stage 10 respectively. Cyril Despres had already been delayed on stage five with a turbo problem, so it was Stéphane Peterhansel who emerged as Team Peugeot Total’s main contender for victory. The Frenchman won a crucial stage through the famous Fiambala dunes, and then seized the advantage on the 10th of 13 stages, with a cushion of one hour at the head of the field. He then just had to manage that advantage all the way to the finish. “This is a huge satisfaction for us. Before the start, a result like this was far from guaranteed. My feeling was that the team was still a bit young, but in fact everything came together extremely well,” said Stéphane Peterhansel. “We had the nice surprise of seeing that our car was extremely competitive throughout the WRC-style stages. I just tried to stay in touch during those days, knowing that Carlos and Seb were quicker than me. We drove a clean rally with one day of maximum attack, and then we found ourselves in the lead with a very comfortable margin: 50 minutes with just three days to go. “After that, it was just a question of looking after that gap as intelligently as possible. When I was competing on my very first Dakars as a bike rider, I dreamed of one-day driving for Peugeot. To have joined the team and won with them is a massive source of satisfaction for me.” Next stop: Dakar 2017!

eugeot Sport’s engineers have recently utilised their know-how and expertise to create the 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport, the most radical model in the brand’s range. However, not satisfied with this successful outcome alone, the Peugeot Sport team decided to go even further by conceiving a racing version of this sporty model. This step from the road to the racetrack led to the creation of the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup. Created by the designers at Style Peugeot, the generous proportions and aerodynamic forms of the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup are clear pointers to its technological content, which has been honed by the brand in motorsport.

Powered by the same 1.6-litre THP engine as that found under the bonnet of the 308 GTi, the 308 Racing Cup already produces 308hp (+38hp compared to the 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport) after only the first phase of its development. The car’s stance, curves and aerodynamic finesse offer the first hint to the model’s pedigree breeding. The 308 Racing Cup adds its own distinctive muscular look, with wider wheels inside wider arches, endowing it with an unmistakeable athletic look. It features a larger overall width, extended to 1910mm (106mm over the 308 GTi). The spoiler that adorns the rear of the car takes its inspiration directly from the WTCC regulations. The front and rear

bumpers and front splitter are specific to the 308 Racing Cup and enhance its aerodynamic efficiency with an aggressive touch. Similarly distinctive are its 18-inch wheel rims which can be fitted with either slick or wetweather tyres (27/65). And if you’re wondering about the Racing part of this performance car’s nameplate, it will certainly do that. In Europe the 308 Racing Cup will succeed the RCZ Racing Cup in both single-make championships and saloon and sportscar racing in country-specific series held in Germany, Spain and Belgium. The car will feature in endurance championships like the 24 H Series too. Watch the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup on Youtube@peugeotsportofficial

Nine-time World Rally Champion, racing driver, and Dakar adventurer Sebastien Loeb has joined Team Peugeot Hansen to contest a full season of the FIA World Rallycross Championship this season, which started in Portugal in April and ends in Argentina on 27 November. Loeb will be Timmy Hansen’s team mate in a two-car squad, driving the 550hp Peugeot 208 WRX Supercar: something of a contrast to the 350hp 2008 DKR beast that he drove through the pampas of South America in January (see p30). Having racked up more rally championships and wins than any other driver, this latest move to rallycross confirms the 42-year-old athlete’s status as the king of off-road driving. “I’m very excited by this opportunity to participate in the full Rallycross Championship for the first time,” said Loeb. “Over the years I have been fortunate to participate in some truly amazing racing. But

rallycross – with the sheer power and the competiveness of the Peugeot 208 WRX, plus the intense nature of the competition – will be something very special. “The car and the strategy for this type of racing is completely new to me, so I have a lot to learn, but I hope I can be competitive pretty soon.” While Loeb will once more be a rookie compared to his teammate Timmy Hansen, Vice-World Champion, he has already won the rallycross gold medal at the 2012 X-Games in California and also took part in his home round at Loheac, France, in 2013. “Last season we proved that we had the potential to perform in the series with Timmy Hansen and Davy Jeanney,” said team principal Kenneth Hansen. “By adding Sebastien Loeb to the equation, we will be even stronger. Rallycross is one of the hardest disciplines to dominate, with no room for mistakes. Loeb has incredible capacity to adapt and I have no doubt that he

will be a strong challenger.” Timmy Hansen and Sebastien Loeb will form a formidable line-up, with the aim of bringing home both the team and driver titles this year. Timmy Hansen commented: “I’ve looked up to Sebastien Loeb throughout my entire life: I even met him once to get his autograph. So to work with him now is like a dream come true for me. I have a lot to learn still, so to get advice from him will be amazing.”

“This latest move to rallycross confirms the 42-year-old athlete’s status as the king of off-road driving.”

n April the cream of Auckland’s culinary community gathered for this year’s Metro Peugeot Restaurant of the Year awards, which took place at Shed 10 in central Auckland. With a multitude of categories covered in addition to the grand prize – including Best Destination Restaurant, Best InnerCity Bistro, Best Wine List, Restauranteur of the Year and more – the awards remain the preeminent opportunity to recognise the incredible talent within the city’s vibrant and diverse food scene. The guest list included restaurateurs, chefs, critics, sponsors and celebrities, dressed to impress on the biggest night of the year for Auckland’s restaurant industry. As Hanna Downey, Senior Marketing Executive for Peugeot New Zealand stated

on the night, the Peugeot brand and the art of creating exceptional cuisine share symmetries and values aplenty. “Style, precision and performance; these are the uncompromising criteria by which we judge everything we do at Peugeot, and the same criteria by which the Metro Peugeot Restaurant of the Year Awards are judged. “Selected for their own relentless excellence and capacity for unrivalled performance, Metro’s top 50 restaurants reflect our passion for exquisite cuisine. “We’re extremely honoured to be part of these awards, and know we’re in good company with the exceptional standards achieved,” she said. In the lead-up to this year’s awards the public were once again asked to vote for their favourite dish by responding to photos on the Metro Facebook page. With eight finalists to choose from, presented by establishments such as Depot, The Engine Room and Casita Miro, the Peugeot People’s Choice Award for Auckland’s Favourite Dish went to a delicious pork belly dish created by The Tasting Shed. from New Zealand. The village roads are very narrow, some country roads are unsealed and French folk drive creatively and fast. It takes you a while to get used to it and every time someone screams “Bloody Parisian!” at me for not going fast enough, I always have to lean out the window and scream, “New Zealand Cherie!” The Peugeot waited patiently for me outside restaurants while I ate oysters,

This car took me to bull fights in St-Maries-de-laMer in the Camargue, shopping in chic Avignon, gastronomic walks in Marseille, antique markets in Nîmes… and every time it’s easy to park, easy to manoeuvre and has fantastic air-conditioning to combat the 35-40-degree heat we’ve been experiencing this summer. I suppose this is why the 308 won European Car of the Year in 2014. Driving in the South of France is different

petits violets (little purple artichokes), rabbit and Pastis for our main; fennel, cepes (porcini) and parmesan cheese for our salad; and fresh goat cheese and late season figs for our cake. Not to mention flowers – there’s so much room in the boot for all our purchases. It’s not stressful dropping the car off at the end of the journey either. I emailed the Peugeot people at Nice airport; they gave me clear directions and I drove straight to their carpark, gave them the keys and jumped on the plane to Italy. Pretty chic, nest pas?

live in Uzès in the South of France for three or four months of the year, so I initially spent a lot of time figuring out how I would get around. Would I buy, rent or borrow a car? I decided on a Peugeot 308, supplied through Peugeot EuroLease, organised from Auckland. It was absolutely the right decision because you get a new car and back-up service at a good price and you don’t have to muck around organising insurance; everything is done for you. Apart from being a very easy car to drive with good outward vision, an easyto-use built in GPS system and huge boot, the best thing about the Peugeot 308 is the low cost of diesel. It seems to just go forever on the smell of an oily rag, which is quite good when you’re travelling from Paris to the South of France and forget to look at the gas metre. I not only use the car to drive around my area shopping at markets, buying kitchen equipment for my new house in Uzès and visiting friends but also for long distance driving to the Basque Country on the other side of France. You just tap the details into the GPS, drive for six hours and – after a time of wonder

aving promised friends in Slovenia that we would come and stay with them, we first flew to Lljubljana, a delightful, compact medieval city with a growing café culture. A short bus trip saw us enjoying charming Slovenian hospitality, including local truffles. Our friends dropped us off in Trieste for the train to Venice and three days later we were in Milan, for our date with a new Peugeot. Peugeot EuroLease has a number of collection locations in Europe and this time we chose Milan Malpensa Airport.

The Tunnel de Tende, which crosses the Maritime Alps south of Cuneo to the north of Nice, was our chosen route into France. This is a road less travelled, but fascinating thanks to the spectacular villages which cascade down steep hillsides. Time stands still here, with daily life continuing as it has for decades. In the height of summer, it’s possible to take a guided tour into the Vallée des Merveilles; a world heritage site recognised for its amazing concentration of rock art. trapped many an unwary adventurer. The huge Atlantic tides are a feature of this bay and indeed the coast of Brittany, where you regularly see boats high and dry as the tide varies by many metres. In Eastern Brittany medieval castles bear witness to the conflicts that beset the region as it sought to retain independence from both French and English domination. St Malo’s great walls harboured intrepid sailors setting out for America, and many corsairs protecting the coastline had a base here too. The quaint town of Dinan has retained its historic centre and has a medieval festival in summer. Other attractions include the rugged coastline with its iconic lighthouses and offshore islands, the stunning gardens containing a wealth of exotic plants, and the restaurants serving an array of fresh seafood including fresh oysters, scallops and mussels. On the south coast we spent time with old friends, visiting Quimper and its cathedral and the lovely towns of Pont Aven and Concarneau. We had previously visited

shock to the senses. Despite the congestion and hectic pace of life here, there remain many spots which are wonderful to visit. I had scheduled an overnight stop in a lovely villa near St Paul de Vence from where I could visit the Fondation Maeght, which houses an impressive modern art collection. A return to ‘home base’ in the Languedoc meant renewed acquaintances with friends, places and events. Even though much stays the same, it always surprises us how much can change in a year. Our village even had a ‘bull running’ event through the streets. More usual summer entertainment might include outdoor concerts and cinema, visits to local markets, wine tasting and – of course – some fine dining.

A reluctant adieu saw us off to the Vallée de Campan to stay in a gîte at the base of the Col du Tourmalet; the highest pass in the Pyrenees and often included in a stage of the Tour de France. From here the intention was to do some walking in the High Pyrenees. We enjoyed stunning views of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre from the top of the pass and did a number of walks in the surrounding area. The previous year’s torrential rains left their mark in the neighbouring valley and the town of Luz-St Sauveur, where roads and houses were still being rebuilt: a reminder to check the weather forecast when travelling. It was soon time to leave again, and after an eight-hour drive in our Peugeot 308, we

We were happy to head to the cooler climate of Brittany, favouring the north coast for this part of our trip. From our base near Cancale we were within easy reach of Mont St Michel, where the work being done to restore its island status greatly impressed us; the causeway having resulted in the bay filling up with sand, threatening the character of the mount. hen Ross Potter suffered a stroke 18 months ago, it took away his ability to play tennis as he had regularly done up until that time. But it certainly didn’t diminish his lifelong passion for the sport. Recently he and wife Linda were invited by friends to join them for a European river cruise, with the added opportunity to meet up with family based overseas in Paris dovetailing nicely into their holiday plans. The serendipity didn’t end there though, as the Tauranga couple’s time in France would also coincide with the French Open at the historic Stade Roland-Garros. “Nine years ago we had the opportunity to attend Wimbledon and enjoyed it immensely. The thought that we might be able to attend the French Open added a whole other dimension to planning for this trip,” says Ross’ wife Linda. Of course, with Ross’ medical condition meaning he now has reduced mobility – and the prospect of negotiating large crowds, steeply raked stadium seating and myriad of other logistical issues weighing heavily on their minds – the Potters’ decided to take a novel approach with regard to securing tickets to the tennis and transport arrangements once there. “We knew Peugeot has had a long association with the French Open and sponsor some key players. Similarly, Ross and I have had a long association with Tauranga Peugeot, knowing both Dealer Principal John Hayes and his wife Jacqui, as well as having been close friends with Jacqui’s parents Sandy and Trish for many years,” continues Linda. “With Ross’ mobility an issue, we decided

to approach Peugeot with our plans, with the idea that they might be able to help ‘smooth the way’ a little in terms of getting around the stadium. “Both here in New Zealand and across the other side of the world in France, we were absolutely blown away by the kindness and assistance given to us.” Having purchased their tickets, and with Tauranga Peugeot having helped with arrangements, the Potters set off on their adventure. As part of the package the couple purchased, they were collected from Peugeot’s brand headquarters along the Avenue de la

Grande Armée in central Paris and driven to and from Stade Roland-Garros in what Linda describes as “beautiful black Peugeots”. As it turns out, Linda wasn’t the only one who thought their transport beautiful either. “I came back to New Zealand with a bit of a bee in my bonnet about getting a new black Peugeot,” laughs Ross. “We’ve never owned a black car before and

I hadn’t really ever considered it. But seeing those rows of gleaming black Peugeots in Paris certainly added a sense of ceremony to things. So yes, I think when it comes time to retire one of the two Peugeots we currently own, our next one will be painted as such.” Once at Stade Roland-Garros, Linda and Ross discovered that, while the events centre is set in beautifully-manicured grounds with adjoining gardens, a fair bit of walking would be involved. Ross is only able to walk short distances at a time, adding difficulties to getting court-side in good time. But, as Linda relates, the Peugeot team in

Paris leapt into action to assist. “Having been involved with the French Open for many years, the Peugeot team there is very experienced. “From our first day there we had the expert assistance of Peugeot Events Manager, Corinne Charbonnier, who very quickly realised we would need a wheelchair; the one that was dispatched for us to use even came with a small team of very caring young people attached, who helped guide us around the complex. “We couldn’t have asked for any more help; it was really very good. We even had

access to Peugeot’s wonderful hospitality village and met many people involved with the brand from all over the world,” says Linda. The assistance provided by Peugeot’s ground staff at the French Open meant that the Potters could sit back, relax and enjoy the tennis they had travelled from the other side of the world to watch. The couple enjoyed centre court seats just five rows back from the famous clay and, for the most part, enjoyed great weather and great competition during the two days they were in attendance. “It was certainly a big ‘Bucket List’ item to tick off,” concludes Ross. “We felt very privileged to have been able to get there and we will always remain very thankful to Tauranga Peugeot and the ground staff in Paris for the effort they all went to in helping make this happen for us.”

ith a quickly escalating total that tops 40 wines in one weekend, a novice wine taster might get the impression a recent trip to Marlborough, New Zealand’s sun-drenched sauvignon blanc capital, was spent bathing in the stuff. However, with over 150 wineries in the area, even if you only visit a handful in an itinerary that also involves eating, meandering, scenic excursions and cursory exercise, you’ll quickly notch up such a talley, as well as an education. Amid a swathe of vineyards that stretch from the coast to the hazy ranges in the

distance, Blenheim is just 20 minutes from Wellington by air. Whisked from the airport to our first stop, a roaring fire welcomes all to the cellar door of celebrated winery Cloudy Bay. The oak barrel room, where the label’s pinot noir rests, is where senior winemaker Tim Heath hosts the odd private tasting. Tim’s relaxed yet highlyinformed approach means he answers novice questions in detail without pretension, allowing visitors to gain a new appreciation for the history, vine work, weather and soil qualities that have gone into creating sauvingon’s signature aromas

Crisp temperatures necessitate a warm layer for a pre-dinner drink at buzzing wine bar Scotch. Gibb’s on Godfrey beyond the outskirts of town is our dinner destination. Chef Brad Hornby periodically emerges from the kitchen to shyly present several of the degustation courses to our table, briefly highlighting each surprising and delicious element. Brad’s wife Liz Buttimore splits front-of-house with Marlborough Tourism ambassador duties, or so it seems at times, such is her enthusiasm for the abundant local produce and suppliers. It’s continually apparent it won’t just be

required to remind that, while you never forget how, it’s still a relief the large tires of the bikes being used on Explore Marlborough’s vineyard cycle tour make navigating gravel access between the vines a cinch. Wide roads and minimal traffic makes conversing with guide Lisa, easy. As we cycle between each winery, she expertly prefaces each with a little background. It’s possible to hire your own bikes and DIY, but the local history, information and guidance from Lisa makes our tour effortless and fun. Within three hours, we cover five notable cellar doors, including Framingham, Whitehaven, Wairau River, Giesen and methode traditionelle specialists No. 1 Family Estate, tasting several wines at each stop with a delicious platter at Giesen Estate’s restaurant to mop up some

astonishment about the bluebird June weather we’ll take away from this trip, it’ll also be the charm of the locals that remains. At Ritual cafe for breakfast, hip, mustachioed owner Matt Hellriegel bids us welcome from behind the coffee machine where he is drawing black gold from the beans he roasts himself. The urban-hippie menu wouldn’t be out of place in Wellington or Auckland with its chia pudding and kombucha offerings, but it’s the hearty local salmon and eggs that‘ll ward off wine wobbles later in the day. Speaking of wobbles, when was the last time you rode a bike? A practice loop is

of the shine we are beginning to exhibit. By the time our transport to Picton, 25 minutes’ drive away, arrives we’re ready for a sauvignon siesta. Embarking on luxury launch MV Tarquin in Picton, our captain welcomes us aboard with a generous pour of – you guessed it – Marlborough’s celebrated sauvignon blanc. Reclining on the top deck for our transfer to the secluded Bay of Many Coves Resort, the deep blue-green waters are mesmerising. The spectacular Queen Charlotte Sound is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and it feels naive to repeatedly voice how impressed we are. Cruising up to the wharf and sighting the self-contained lodge apartments at Bay of Many Coves nestled into a hill in the Sounds, it’s easy to ponder why tropical Pacific Islands are constantly sought as an ideal retreat. Sure there’s the sun, but that’s here too. Consider the hot-tub overlooking crystalclear waters, the restaurant with awardwinning chef Hannes Bareiter, nature’s fitness facilities (bush walking, yoga on your private deck, or a languid kayak trip) and the two- or three-bedroom suites designed to feel like a traditional (albeit 5-star) bach, with large windows and doors that let the sunrise right in to your king bed. It’s said past guests have requested night lights, so enveloping is the inky darkness and still quiet of the location. It’s fair to say the locals love their wine, as hosts Murray and Elaine delight in offering

us yet another selection, but Murray’s enthusiasm is contagious. Another divine sixcourse wine-matched degustation dinner and we climb the bush-lined path to our rooms. Returning to Picton via water taxi is a comedown from the lofty luxe of the Tarquin, but sighting shags, cormorants, seals, big blue cod and terakihi is enough to take our minds off the hardship. We keep our eyes peeled for the local dolphins and recent orca visitors but they are shy today. The final destination on our whistle-stop winery weekend is lunch back in Blenheim at Brancott Estate, a major player with a sleek Fearon Hay-designed glass and steel Heritage Center perched on a hill with extensive views overlooking the region. On a good day (and it certainly was), you can see the wind turbines on Wellington’s hills across the Cook Straight. One last – sorry – five last wines to taste, then it’s time to return to the airport and head north. What a weekend.

hat started off as sponsorship of his local surf lifesaving club has become something of a passion for Tauranga Peugeot Dealer Principal John Hayes. So much so that he recently become a fully qualified lifeguard too. “My sons Ryan and Cameron both went through the programme at Mount Maunganui Surf Club and now my wife Jacqui and I have both become qualified guards, so we’ve been around the club for many years,” says John. “Then around three years ago, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand brought in a new ruling that every competitor must wear a

high-visibility competition vest when they’re in the water. “I’d been looking at various sponsorship opportunities for quite a while by that stage, but the club is such an integral part of life in the city that the idea of branding the vests instantly appealed.” John and Tauranga Peugeot has sponsored the club for three full seasons, with this coming summer set to be the fourth. It’s a busy summer ahead too. As head coach John Bryant says, 2017 could be the most pivotal season in this premier club’s history. “We have a motivational saying around the club at present, which is ‘Drive for 5’. In March we’ll be heading to the national championships in Christchurch as four-time winners,” John explains. “As far as my research shows, no other club has achieved five national titles in a row, so we’re gunning for that win. “We set the bar high – we’ve won seven national championships over the last 10 years – so we’re looking forward to getting

to Christchurch to compete.” John Hayes says that, aside from the fact he has strong familial links with the club, partnering with the ‘Mounties’ fits the Peugeot brand too. “Because this club is so consistent in their performance, other clubs look forward to competing against them. When we go to surf carnivals to compete, we have real presence as a club and that’s a good thing for the brand,” he says. “The other reason our association with the club appeals to me in particular is because I really believe the service Kiwi surf lifesavers provide around our beaches is so incredibly underrated. “These are kids that could be off doing something else on a Saturday. But they give up their weekends for free and sit attentively on the beach waiting for that whistle to go. “I think that’s incredibly selfless; something that is worth supporting wholeheartedly.” “We’re by no means the biggest club around, but we really punch above our weight,” continues John Bryant. “Omanu Beach, Papamoa, Piha over on the west coast; they’re all bigger clubs than us. But we’ve always been very determined to deliver a quality programme rather than just grabbing numbers.

“It works for us too, not only in terms of the trophy cabinet, but we have a very stable club in terms of junior member retention rates.” John says that surf lifesaving leads to many other disciplines and cites the Australian Olympic team’s London 2012 campaign as an example of this; at least 60 members of that squad got their start in surf lifesaving before moving into other sports such as kayaking, canoeing and swimming. “Lisa Carrington is a ‘Mountie’ and even came back to a recent competition day to help manage our junior clubbies. “There aren’t too many clubs in the country that could say they have a reigning Olympic world champion standing on the beach helping out with a clipboard!” laughs John. For Tauranga Peugeot Dealer Principal John Hayes – who can register his involvement with Peugeot as far back as 1989 – the relationship with the Mount Maunganui Surf Club is a great one and something he’s looking forward to continuing with as the busy summer season approaches. “In my experience our customers look for the best quality vehicles they can get. I understand that desire and I want the best out of any partnership I put my name to. I’ve certainly got it with this premium and professional club,” he says.

But as dealer principal Craig Duncan details, there is even more good news on the horizon. “We’re serious about our commitment to Peugeot in the region and, while we’re currently operating from a temporary site in Tristram Street, the brand will be a firm part of our all-new headquarters right in the heart of the vibrant Base, Te Awa complex,” he said. Currently customers will find a large selection of Peugeot models next door to Duncan & Ebbett’s Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo dealership. From late-2017 onwards however, a new dedicated Peugeot showroom will be front and centre as part of the new state-of-theart showroom complex. “The team at Duncan & Ebbett are extremely proud to represent Peugeot

aving enjoyed 50 percent revenue growth in the last 12 months, Auckland firm Hall Electrical Services is looking to future-proof its vehicle fleet as part of an ongoing renewal programme. “The last 12 months have been full on and very exciting for us,” says business manager James Cooper. “We made the decision last year to get our busy field service teams into newer, safer vehicles as part of an ongoing vehicle replacement programme. “The Peugeot range of light commercial vans ticked the boxes for us, so we have set about leasing both the Partner and the larger Expert models.” James says the company has a mix of both

“Peugeot vans are a very positive addition as we move into this period of growth.” vehicles, based around the different working environments and activities their electricians engage in day-to-day. Working primarily within metropolitan Auckland, Hall Electrical Services’ employees split themselves between contracts and service divisions. “The guys in the service division are constantly on the move. We have a lot of inner city commercial clients, so to have a van that is capable of carrying all the gear the technician requires, but is also compact enough to park in confined spaces and service vehicle zones is important,” continues James. “For example, if we add a roof-mounted ladder to the top of an Expert, that means we might not be able to park in some multi-story car parks, so the Partner – with its lower

60

roofline – works better in that situation. “The larger Expert is generally used by guys in our contracts division, who tend to work on one site for longer periods of time and don’t need to be zipping around the city so much during the day. “Our contracts team does a lot of shop fit-out work which requires a lot of cable. This is heavy and cumbersome, so the extra load space in the Expert comes into its own for that type of job.” James says the turbo diesel Expert, with its torquey 2.0-litre HDi engine, has plenty of grunt to shift heavier gear. Moving to a single van supplier also gives the company’s fleet a sense of uniformity, adding a further professional element as the company grows and becomes more visible to customers. The company currently runs three Peugeot Experts and two Peugeot Partners. Hall Electrical Services lease their Peugeot

light commercial vehicles which, says James, means they can add to the fleet as and when required in a cost-effective manner. Because every electrician works in a different way, requiring different tools for different tasks, the company can provide work vehicles for its field services staff based on what sort of activities they are engaged in and – on a wider scale – what sort of areas the company as a whole is engaging in as it further develops its service offering to clients. “A big driver for us in this vehicle replacement strategy is to move out of the older vans we have been running, which feature much less safety specification and poor performance as far as fuel efficiency goes,” concludes James. “For the sake of both the on-the-job safety of our staff and the company’s bottom line, the Peugeot vans are a very positive addition as we move into this period of growth.” James Cooper

ospitality New Zealand regional manager Dylan Firth covers plenty of miles every week as part of both his daily commute and multifaceted line of work. Living in Martinborough and commuting across the Rimutaka Hill to Wellington every day means a sure-footed SUV is his ideal work weapon. “I’m very excited that we’re moving to Peugeot 4008 SUVs. The car is a real premium product and will certainly set us apart in terms of what people might expect a fleet car to look like,” says Dylan. “They look very sharp and, with my job taking me all over the Wellington and Wairarapa regions, having an eye-catching car is as important to the organisation as having a comfortable one is to me.” Hospitality New Zealand is a voluntary trade association representing 3,000 hospitality and commercial accommodation providers and is committed to adding value to its members through both an individual membership service and local and national advocacy. Hospitality New Zealand’s team of eight regional managers are all set to move to Peugeot 4008s this year. Based in every corner of the country, the national team

collectively encounter all sorts of terrain and road conditions as part of their daily work, so a safe and reliable fleet car is essential. Dylan – whose territory extends from Masterton to Miramar and up the Kapiti Coast as well – is constantly on the go, visiting all manner of hospitality operators including restaurants, café bars, hotels, taverns, off-licenses and a variety of accommodation providers. “My car really is my office most of the time,” he says. “I have a home office as well, but I spend most of my working week on the road, so I need somewhere that is as comfortable when I’m on the go as it is when I have stopped off to get some emailing done or

proposals written on the laptop. “From what I’ve seen so far, the Peugeot 4008 is going to fit the bill in this regard, what with its premium cabin and good internal space. But even though it’s big on the inside, it’s still has a reasonably compact footprint, meaning parking in the city isn’t an issue.” Dylan says it is important to have a car that is fuel efficient when so much of the week is spent on the road. The Peugeot 4008 boasts combined fuel economy from 7.9-litres/100km, meaning Dylan can spend more time meeting clients than standing on a service station forecourt. “I’m lucky enough to have a fuel card as part of my job, but obviously that means we’re aligned to a particular chain of service stations as a result. It just so happens there aren’t any branches of that particular retailer over in the Wairarapa near where I live, so I’m always mindful of the petrol gauge.” As well as being a work vehicle, Dylan’s Peugeot will also take on a few domestic duties at weekends. He says his is an active family; weekends are just as busy as weekdays. So the high-riding SUV set-up of the 4008 is perfectly suited for recreation. “I like the fact the car features on-demand four-wheel drive. We do a lot of everything at the weekends, so it’s good to know the car will get us where we need to go, even if it’s off the beaten track. “I never know where each working day might take me. It’s good to have a safe, comfortable and reliable vehicle to get me there.”

ooking around the bright, airy, spacious showroom at Southern Autos Manukau in Manukau City, the spring of 2014 must feel like a long time ago for dealer principal Andrew Craw. Back in September of that year, the thennew Peugeot-Citroen dealership opened its doors… Portacomm doors that is. Despite the temporary building though, Andrew explains the timing was right, and the dealership has been going from strength-tostrength since then. “With the Peugeot 308 launching in late 2014 we really wanted to establish ourselves ahead of that activity. We wanted to get amongst it with a great product right from the start,” he says. “We moved into the new showroom in August last year and now we have a location that people enjoy visiting. It’s a nice environment that encourages our customers to stay awhile, rather than rush in and out.” Andrew is determined to build a customer

experience that reflects the best of French culture and expertise. Reminders of the Peugeot brand’s home nation – and its long history of engineering expertise and cultural impact alike – are everywhere, with chic black and white photographs of Paris landmarks on the walls and wood-panelled display cases housing Moet, Louis Vuitton and other luxury French products at centre stage. Andrew was also insistent that the coffee machine be the real deal rather than a run-ofthe-mill push button affair; another example of the Euro-flavoured attention to detail he wants to emphasise to customers. “It’s fair to say we’re a newer brand to many people in this region. But our catchment area is enormous; stretching from Te Kauwhata in the south up to Otahuhu. With the large scale growth we’re seeing in terms of population here, we’re very aware of the opportunity we have now to introduce a premium European product to a whole lot of new customers. “We started from zero the day we opened

our doors. Now we have repeat customers, great feedback and a huge database of interested buyers; that last component especially is a key part of the long-term success of Southern Autos Manukau,” says Andrew. He says the team is looking forward to new products arriving in 2017, such as the Peugeot 2008 crossover and 3008 SUV; models he believes will do very well, especially with lifestylers on the increasing number of small acre blocks that pepper the Counties-Manukau region. “Being that much bigger and practical, I can see the 3008 in particular being a winner for us. It’s a bigger car, but it still features clever technology and that sense of premium luxury that the French do so well.”

t has been nearly a year now since the famous Peugeot dealership in Auckland’s Greenlane moved under the stewardship of the Armstrong Motor Group. General Sales Manager Marc Spring says that the move was a natural fit and the last five months have yielded plenty of activity. “With Rick Armstrong of the Armstrong Motor Group already operating both the Christchurch and Wellington Peugeot dealerships, the Auckland location really adds some gas to the tank in terms of our national coverage. “We essentially started from scratch with the dealership; it was a completely new franchise, so we had to hit the ground running and we’re starting to see some

good results,” he says. Marc, who has been with the Greenlane operation since March 2016, says that the sharp pricing of the Peugeot 4008 has really changed the game for the brand in the area, with 208 and 308 hatchback sales also remaining steady. “We’ve really taken the battle to the competition with the 208 and 308. I think they’re great cars at great prices and offer European car buyers a real point-ofdifference. Next year is going to be a very busy one for us though. The market growth across the board has been in SUV sales in New Zealand, so to have a brand new Peugeot SUV on the horizon in the shape of the 3008, is very exciting. “From what I’ve seen of that vehicle,

it’s going to offer a very stylish and comprehensive package to buyers, so we can’t wait for it to arrive. Then, later in the year we’ll also be welcoming the new 5008 seven-seater; another vital aspect of the range which customer feedback suggests will also be popular.” All in all, with a powerful new name behind the brand and what continues to be one of the premier locations in Auckland, Marc says Armstrong Peugeot is in a very good spot. “We’re here and we’re ready for the next 12 months to prove even more positive than the last 12 have been. We’ve got some amazing new models on the way, so we’re looking forward to offering our customers a lot more choice in 2017.”

his year has proven to be a pivotal one for Robin Ginders and Nigel Towler. They’ve successfully brought Peugeot back to Northland at their Port Road, Whangarei dealership, giving customers in the Winterless North the opportunity to sample the best the brand has to offer. Northland Autos Peugeot opened its doors in January and garnered plenty of recognition; a testament to Robin and Nigel’s experience and reputation in the province. “We are very choosey about which dealer operations we give the Peugeot brand to,” says Peugeot Dealer Development Manager, Dave Briscoe. “But with over 20 years selling cars to the people of Northland, we could see that not only did Robin and Nigel have a fantastic track record, they also possess a heap of passion for the brand and a great location too.”

The duo has been reintroducing Peugeot to their large pool of potential customers over the last few months, with a lot of success. In addition to Peugeot’s passenger vehicle range, Northland Autos Peugeot customers can also sample the manufacturer’s comprehensive range of light commercial vehicles and, of course, its chic scooter line-up. As Robin says, Peugeot is a brand that

t was ‘all change’ in the Manawatu earlier this year, with the announcement of a new Palmerston North-headquartered Peugeot service agent. While Manawatu Peugeot closed in May (consolidating operations to Hawke’s Bay Peugeot), the latest member of the national Peugeot family opened its doors to owners throughout the province. Eurocar Peugeot and Citroën was

announced as the new Peugeot Parts and Service Agent for the Manawatu region, under the expert stewardship of Robin and Jenny Kidd. Eurocar Peugeot and Citroën is a family run operation and has been serving local Peugeot and Citroën owners since 1982. Robin began his career as a mechanic, Robin’s son Stephen runs the sales department and daughter Donna is the office manager.

Together the Eurocar Peugeot and Citroën team has built up a tremendous amount of goodwill within the Manawatu over the past 34 years and needless to say, they know their Peugeots inside and out. Located at 4 Carroll Street, Palmerston North, Eurocar Peugeot and Citroën offers a complete servicing and parts facility, with factory-trained technicians who utilise genuine Peugeot parts.

boasts plenty of pedigree as well as plenty of new innovation, offering a premium European vehicle for a lot less than customers might think. “A new Peugeot isn’t expensive to purchase and we’re very keen to see younger buyers considering the Peugeot range of cars – especially the well-regarded 208 and 308 hatchbacks, along with the versatile 4008. Not only are these cars much more affordable these days, but they offer drivers a real point-of-difference too. “Peugeot boasts a superb aftersales service and parts division, meaning customers aren’t waiting weeks for parts to

be sent from Europe. We can source and service straight away. Overall we reckon Peugeot is where attention to detail meets value for money,” he says. Robin and Nigel have another busy year ahead too, with both the 2008 crossover and 3008 SUV on the horizon meaning they’re expecting a lot of interest at the dealership. Those models will be arriving during the Kiwi summer, although Robin reminds that if customers are keen to see what’s available in the showroom but can’t get into Whangarei immediately, they can always check out the full range of Peugeot models online at www.northlandautos.co.nz

he Peugeot brand has the backing of some exceptional technical talent in New Zealand and the recent Peugeot Technical Advisors World Cup certainly underlined that fact. Having completed the competitive international theory assessment as part of the inter-marque semi-finals, Peugeot New Zealand’s Kiwi tech team – made up of Daniel Newman from Hawke’s Bay Peugeot, Steve Jenner from Tauranga Peugeot, Sanjaya Hewmanage from Continental Car Services North Shore, supervised by technical training manager Colin Mitchell –received a third place ranking.

“Peugeot’s parent company PSA Group advised us that New Zealand were ranked third in their group,” says Colin Mitchell. “The competition is tough and takes place on an international stage, so a third placing is something to be very proud of. The entire New Zealand dealer network acknowledges their efforts and achievements to date. “On behalf of Sime Darby Automobiles we really want to congratulate our three technical advisors for their hard work and commitment to the Peugeot brand.” Later this year, the winning countries – including Japan, which won the local group – will attend the finals in France.
