This is a book documenting the ideas I develped in GSAPP; A collection of invention and investigation into the urbanism; Represented by studio projects, photography, visual studies and seminar works. Mainly structured around the “Three Cities�, New York, Neijiang, and Barcelona, which are three studio projects developed in the three semesters, along with other projects interfere within the same discussion. Three Cities representing three totally different kind of urbanism; New York is now the metropolis of the world, Neijiang is a booming city in China and Barcelona is a city that abundant by cultural and history richness of Europe. In this three projects, is mainly about establishing a new relation between architecture and urban and also rethinking the original urbanism of the city. This book as a device using "Three Cities" representing as the whole world which could also trigger discussion sabout having a global vision in the architectural field, which is essential in this media and information age.

Reconsidering the meaning of building a skyscraper.

Central Park is a saved land in New York; its unique texture differentiated from the concrete jungle; it is the true void in the overcrowded city; Creates an atmosphere that let you suddenly felt time freeze and one self disasscociate withe the reality. You are in the center of the city but also are detached from the city.

Only in the synthetic nature carpet you sense your in the city.

"The Detached City",the size of an New York's block, is placed at the center of the resovoir, the center of the carpet. It is composed by a catalogue of spacial elements which is taken from the urban context. This "machine of observation" creates a new experience and relation

between the city and the carpet.


Sometimes one can not see it because your in it.

A highly developed city, full of amazement, just like New York, should lead architects to have a new way reflecting the city.

Neijiang is a small city in Sichuan ,China.

Proposing a museum that dissolves into the city.

Chang Da-Chien Originally known as a guohua painter, by the 1960s he was also renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter. Chang is regarded as one of the most gifted master forgers of the twentieth century.

WHAT IS IN NEIJIANG?

The only connection of the city and the artist,Chang Da Chien, is that he was born there.

Neijiang City

A typical generic city in China with a high density of population. Tao river runnung through the heart of the city but the river is disconnected and unreachble for the people because of the different altitude of the river bank and the city.

think all cities will eventually become generic, just like "I the airport. Spectacular cities will turn into functional

systems. New York and Paris will no longer be special, the taste of McDonald’s is the same worldwide, coco-cola is seen everywhere written in different languages, you can see Chinese performing Tai-chi in the local park of Los-Angeles people all over the world are wearing the same brand of clothes. Most IBM employees are in India servicing customers from the U.S. and the world elsewhere. Even the spectacles in these cities; the Eiffel tower, The Empire State Building, The Tower of London all have a souvenir shop at the exit.The world has become flat and the city has become generic. Actually many cities that have just popped up in China actually are generic. For instance, Shenzhen a city on the seaside of China, after it became a special economic district has in just twenty years grown from a fisherman village to a metropolitan city. In this period of time the population grew from six thousand to twelve million. Money, resources and population have poured in at such a pace that they don’t have time to consider what is suitable for the city. Economic growth is the only ambition in mind. The image they want are all from developed cities in the western world. The city became modern indeed but was fully detached from it’s original context and culture."

THE PATH Creating a path from the city to the islands and then to the river, transforming from rigid solid pavement to organic form then to a ferry Walking along from the city to a raft, the inverted mountain serve as a transition space.

Tide changes throughout different seasons; water rise in summer, and you can see the river bank in winter the river is inevitable for daily life of the people which also becomes an exhibiting element in the museum.

Z

umthor uses his own experience and pictures creating a poetic atmosphere letting readers fall in to their own memories of architectural spaces and details of textures, smell, sound…..etc, which makes readers start thinking things in a more emotional way. The photo is not like a picture designed by photographers or architect to present the perfect image of the kitchen space, it’s a kitchen which you can sense the connection to people, you can see used glasses, a bowl with a stir stick in it, a napkin roll, coffee machine which is filled with coffee beans and a mop on the counter. These picture all have the same kind of theme, capturing the everyday life of people which Zumthor think that architecture is nothing without the linkage of life, the very detail of the experience he describe of his childhood and the pictures of everyday life creates a atmosphere for readers to start thinking architecture in his way.

I n next section “Completed landscapes”, he stated his building is pursuing the feeling of “There are certain building has something secret about it. They seem simply to be there.” Building is the object that makes the landscape to be completed. This sentence is also a statement of his feeling , which makes images flow in reader’s mind just like Zumthor was describing his childhood in his aunt’s kitchen. This create a dialogue discussing that architecture and its urban or landscape context is not just only about analogy, fabric, transportation…..etc. There is also a deeper relation between buildings and landscapes, they give the feeling of their surroundings and seem to be saying “I am as you see me and I belong here.” After zooming in the most detail of the building the joints of all part then he zoomed out started to talk about the relation between the building and the context of both surroundings and historically. “Every new work of architecture intervenes in a specific historical situation.” The relation is not just what we think it’s a harmonious relation that a building has to have ability to appeal to people’s emotions and minds in a various way. After all a building has a relation to people both in a physical and emotional way. Since people’s feeling is created by the experience of the past, the sensuous connections with a building must respect the process of remembering. This section describe Zumthor’s argument in architecture of the relation between the original existing and the new layer of object, still. In a very poetic and emotional way, his images and texts combine and create a atmosphere letting readers to feel about the beautiful emotional relation in the real world.

TREE FACTORY BCN Renovation of Bon Pastor

*Rethinking the typology of the urban block

on Pastor is at the crossing of main highways and roads, but the purely B industrial program and the original factories typology create a wall between the site and the surrounding context. It is connected but also isolated at the same time.

The project proposes new typological interventions as a trigger to question the traditional urban system and create a neighborhood of multi-functional programs. The Tree Factory plays an important role as an interface weaving the old factory typology and the new interventions, creating a new dialogue between habitats and workers. An artificial landscape, the Tree Factory is a new kind of urban open space in which the production of trees establishes a new relation between Barcelona and Bon Pastor.
