Nishimachi Board of Directors

Chris Hathaway ’90

I AM HONORED TO REFLECT on what was an exceptional year for Nishimachi. Our robust enrollment numbers across grades is a testament to the unflagging dedication of our faculty and staff, but also our community members who collectively do so much to ensure the continued success of our school. We had one of our largest graduating classes in recent memory, and I cannot overstate the pride I felt listening to each of their eloquent and heartfelt speeches during the graduation ceremony. I am confident that all of our Class of ’24 graduates have moved on with a rocksolid foundation for their continued education journey.

our strong tradition of excellence at Nishimachi to continue for our students and community. We have made material progress, and we will continue the project as a top priority.

The strong demand for a Nishimachi education has only reinforced the focus on our high school initiative. Considerable time and effort has gone into developing the program and vision for a high school. We continue to assess potential locations and partners, noting it is the Board’s responsibility to evaluate options that allow

The success of our students would of course not be possible without the brilliance of our faculty and staff. In recognition of the vital importance of our team, I am pleased to report that all faculty and staff were provided with a well-deserved 5% salary increase. This decision reflects our deep appreciation for their unwavering commitment

to excellence in education and their pivotal role in nurturing and guiding our students. We believe that investing in our faculty and staff is paramount to fostering an enriching learning environment, and we are grateful for the community’s support in this regard.

This year has also highlighted the strength of our community partnerships. The involvement of TNK and Nishimachi-Kai has been key to creating an environment where students feel supported both in and out of the classroom and where the school’s

Reflecting on a Year of Renewal

I WOULD

LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY

to thank everyone for being a part of the Nishimachi family. This year has been one of renewal and reconnection as we enjoyed a year filled with the exhilaration and vibrancy of being together as one community. We have benefited from your support in so many ways during the year and we thank our many donors who have made it possible to enhance our offerings this year. From field trips and celebrations to community gatherings, we enhanced and even added to the richness of our school’s offerings. Our students fully engaged in their learning, making significant connections and taking ownership of their educational journeys. Highlights of the year included our TED Talks, the all-school day long STEAM Fair, and our participation in the Sakura Book Bowl, to name a few, all made possible by the unwavering commitment of our community.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

In our first year of implementing our Strategic Plan, the focus on Intent One of the Nishimachi Way – Inquiry Learning – brought about dynamic changes on campus. Our faculty engaged deeply in professional development under the guidance of Trevor MacKenzie, a worldrenowned expert in inquiry-based education. His work was instrumental in helping us reimagine our learning spaces, refine lesson planning, and foster collaboration across subject areas. We proudly utilized our new MakerSpace this year, equipped with cutting-edge tools such as 3D

printers, drones, and a dedicated specialist to lead transdisciplinary learning. The STEAM Fair was a remarkable success, thanks to our partnership with TNK, providing students from K–9 with age-appropriate learning experiences. In addition, we hired a STEAM coach/activator as a new faculty position and began to build touchpoints in our curriculum to bring an innovation mindset to life.

WELL-BEING

At Nishimachi, the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff has always been a priority. This year, we introduced new initiatives to further support this critical area. We adopted CPOMS, a platform that enables our counselors to document and monitor student progress effectively. Additionally, we launched a comprehensive K–9 Health curriculum tailored to our students’ needs.

To support this program, we created a new full-time teaching position focused on health education. The curriculum addresses various essential topics, from healthy eating and social media use to human sexuality, ensuring that students receive well-rounded support throughout the year.

A YEAR OF BELONGING

Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), encapsulated in Intent 2 of our Strategic Plan was further solidified this year with the creation of our first-ever Inclusion and Belonging policy. The policy emphasizes our belief that “belonging is the foundation of learning.” With input from our faculty, our DEI committee, and

Middle School students explore their passions in Exploratory classes, ranging from cooking to robotics.

approved by our Board, we are well on our way to creating a roadmap that will weave belonging together with our social and emotional learning and general well-being. Next year, we will build on this framework, linking it with our Nishimachi Learner Expectations to deepen our DEI efforts.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

Recruiting and retaining top-quality educators has become increasingly challenging due to a global teacher shortage and the unique difficulties of attracting teachers to Japan. Despite the strong reputation of both Japan and our school, the weakening yen, along with competitive benefits and salaries offered by other institutions, has made this process more difficult. However, we recognize that our teachers are the cornerstone of our mission.

This year, I am pleased to announce that we implemented a 5% salary increase for all faculty and staff. Additionally, we created new roles and stipend positions, such as literacy coaches and Inquiry coaches, to offer career advancement opportunities within our school. We also increased our professional learning budget, allowing more faculty members to attend conferences like EARCOS, and inviting trainers to Japan to participate in team training sessions. Successful fundraising for our Annual Fund played a crucial role in making these advancements possible while ensuring we maintain a careful watch over our budget.

75th ANNIVERSARY PREPARATIONS

As we embrace the milestone of our 75th anniversary, our Advancement team, together with our Learning Leadership team, have been diligently preparing a year-long celebration that reflects on all aspects of our school’s history and achievements. We have engaged a community member to help plan and execute a calendar of events, including speaker vetting, budgeting for visitors, and creating marketing materials.

This year, we experienced a four-fold increase in the number of alumni who visited our campus. Several of us took “field trips” down memory lane in our Matsukata House

Museum, and had the opportunity to cherish the many connections that were forged as a student, former parent, faculty member, or community member.

We look forward to hosting a significant number of visitors for our 75th anniversary and are excited to bring Nishimachi’s history into the classroom. Please come for the many events and help us celebrate our school and the special place it is today.

HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT

Finally, our Board of Directors and the High School Steering Committee have been actively working on the development of a high school program for our community. Throughout the year, our Directors have engaged with parents to outline our progress and the potential opportunities ahead. While the development of a high school program remains a long-term goal, we are committed to continuing this work for the foreseeable future.

SUMMARY

This year, our school has embraced a renewed sense of normalcy as we resumed many activities that make Nishimachi special. The return to a full schedule has seen our students thrive, taking ownership of their learning and engaging in a range of enriching experiences. In our first year of implementing our Strategic Plan, we have made significant strides in Inquiry Learning, supported by expert guidance and the introduction of new learning spaces like our MakerSpace.

We have also strengthened our commitment to well-being, introducing new health initiatives and ensuring our students receive comprehensive support. Our efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have been bolstered with the creation of our first Inclusion and Belonging policy, laying the foundation for further progress next year.

Despite global challenges in teacher recruitment, we have successfully implemented a salary increase and expanded professional development opportunities for our faculty, thanks in part to a successful year of fundraising. As we look ahead to our 75th anniversary, preparations are well underway for a year-long celebration that will bring our school’s history to life. Additionally, our Board continues to explore the development of a high school program, engaging with our community to shape the future of our school. Thank you for your continued support and friendship.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE

ANNUAL GIVING

NISHIMACHI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL’S Annual Giving Program continues to be a centerpiece of our community’s generosity and commitment. Each year, the program directly enhances the student experience and supports key initiatives that help advance the school’s mission. This year, we are proud to have raised ¥110 million, with donations from 257 members of our alumni, current parents, and broader school community. This level of participation was consistent with last year’s efforts, demonstrating the ongoing dedication of our supporters.

A notable highlight of this year’s campaign was a major donation of ¥30 million, which played a significant role in helping us reach a total comparable to last year’s ¥111 million. Contributors directed their donations to the Annual Fund, Outreach Scholarship Fund, 75th Anniversary Fund, Endowment, and various restricted programs, all of which ensure the continued growth and strength of our institution.

Additionally, TNK, our parent group, generously contributed over ¥8 million in grants, further supporting the wide range of programs that benefit our students. This collective generosity from alumni, parents, and friends of the school not only sustains our programs today but helps secure the future of Nishimachi for generations to come.

Sincerely,

ANNUAL FUND

THE ANNUAL FUND SERVES as a primary focus of fundraising at Nishimachi International School, helping to support numerous initiatives that tuition alone cannot cover. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty, staff, and corporate partners who contribute to this important effort. One of the unique aspects of the Annual Fund is the trust donors place in the school, allowing us to direct funds where they are most needed. This flexibility enables us to strengthen many areas of our school’s program and maintain a high level of excellence.

This year, our fundraising maintained its overall success compared to last year. The Annual Fund achieved a record total of ¥73.9 million, surpassing the previous year’s ¥70 million. However, support from our Corporate Contribution Program (CCP) was lower, bringing in ¥5.9 million compared to ¥8.9 million last year, due to a smaller number of participating companies. Despite this, the combined total from the Annual Fund and CCP reached ¥79 million, matching last year’s

OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP

NISHIMACHI’S OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, launched in 2003–04, provides financial support to eligible students from diverse socioeconomic, racial, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. Our original aim, to enhance diversity within our school community, remains our guiding principle in both fundraising and program administration.

This year’s support has been exceptional, highlighting the generosity of our community, who recognize the program’s value and purpose. Over 300 participants joined November’s Outreach Walkathon, showcasing a high level of community engagement, for our 11th year of the event.

Our objective is to raise ¥16 million annually, ensuring continued support for deserving students. In 2023–2024 we raised ¥14.6 million for Outreach Scholarships. A combination of generous contributions from individual donors and community groups, both Tomo No Kai and Nishimachi-Kai, made this possible.

We extend our deep gratitude to our donors, many of whom have consistently contributed to this program each year. We kindly request all members of the Nishimachi community to generously support the Outreach Scholarship Program in the upcoming months.

CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM

THE CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM is designed to secure financial contributions from foreign corporations, with the aim of maintaining and enhancing international education. While approved in 1978 for one school, today it is offered by a number of highly regarded and accredited international schools in Japan.

Scholarships are a cornerstone of the program and are granted to the children of foreign nationals, whose parents are employed by international companies. Nishimachi is able to receive annual donations that exceed what is required to fund the corporate scholarships and apply the remainder as a donation to our annual giving program. In 2023–2024, CCP annual support totalled ¥5.9 million from 6 participating companies.

WE ARE EXCITED TO REFLECT ON and celebrate the many remarkable accomplishments of Tomo no Kai (TNK) over the past year. The contribution and hard work of our parent volunteers made this an incredibly successful year, filled with events and initiatives that strengthened our Nishimachi community.

TNK, driven by 16 active committees, organized and hosted over 20 events throughout the year, ranging from cultural celebrations to fundraising activities, informational meetings, and social gatherings. These events fostered a strong sense of community

while meaningfully enriching the student experience. The committees dedicated their time and effort to ensure each event ran smoothly, promoted cultural understanding, raised essential funds, and provided valuable moments of connection and joy for both parents and students.

A particular highlight of TNK’s work this year was its fundraising efforts. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our community, TNK raised over ¥14 million and approved over ¥8 million in grants to the school. These funds have been used to bolster a

variety of special projects that enhance the learning environment for our students and contribute to the continued growth and success of the school. These contributions are making a real and lasting impact, from new classroom resources to improvements in school facilities.

As we look ahead to the coming year, we are filled with excitement and optimism. TNK is eager to build on this momentum, continuing to nurture our students, strengthen our community bonds, and create even more memorable experiences for everyone at Nishimachi.

Thank you to all of the parents, volunteers, and committee members who made this year such an incredible success. We couldn’t have done it without you, and we look forward to another year of collaboration, connection, and celebration.

AS CHAIR OF THE NISHIMACHI-KAI board of directors, I am proud to reflect on a year filled with meaningful connections and support for our wonderful Nishimachi community.

This year, we began with the Alumni Café at the Food Fair, where alumni reconnected and shared delicious treats. The café was full of hugs and smiles, reminding us of the friendships that connect us all to Nishimachi.

We also welcomed two new directors to our board, individuals who bring fresh perspectives and a commitment to Nishimachi-Kai. Their addition ensures that we remain energized and focused on planning ahead as we continue to support the school and each other.

Our winter pizza party for Tokyo-based alumni was another highlight, offering a warm, informal setting to meet up. It was wonderful to see so many faces, both familiar and new, sharing in the positive school spirit that defines our association.

We appreciated being invited to the open sessions of the Fall and Spring Board of Trustees meetings, ensuring our voices continue to contribute to Nishimachi’s success.

The June BBQ, with food prepared by our talented alumna Shizue Sharp ’90 and her husband, Curtis Chung, owner of a catering operation El Chino Loco in Honolulu, was a remarkable success. It was a day filled with laughter, great food, and a celebration of our many

great memories. Many former and long-tenured current faculty joined, making it an especially joyful experience.

Nishimachi-Kai also proudly donated to the Outreach Scholarship Program, as we have for many years, to support diversity at Nishimachi. Lastly, we presented each Grade 9 graduate with a gift, welcoming them into our alumni family.

Our love for Nishimachi remains as strong as ever, and we look forward to another great year ahead.

Warm regards,

WAYS TO GIVE

DONATING TO NISHIMACHI is an investment in not only today’s children; it is an investment in generations to come as well. Nishimachi has been providing an outstanding education for international children for over seventy years. It is incumbent upon alumni and current families to ensure that it will continue today and in the future.

There are many ways you can support Nishimachi. Be assured that no gift is too small and every gift is equally recognized and appreciated. A gift from a family, when added to that of another, will make a larger contribution. You will aid Nishimachi immensely by participating and encouraging others to do so as well.

If you have already given, we thank you. If you have not, please, let us hear from you soon. For details, please contact the Advancement Office or visit our giving page.
