Nishimachi is special. So many people I meet every day affirm this…whether they be friends from years past, to families who are at school today. I am fortunate to be working with teachers, parents, and alumni to carry on the legacy of Nishimachi and build its future. Children often think that history is about old events, but I remind them that their work to make the world a better place is, in fact, history in the making.

Nishimachi’s mission - to develop learners and leaders who know, care and take action - is on full display in this issue of The Internationalist. Alumnus, Taiei Hashimoto ‘02, shares his passion for using engineering skills and cultural awareness to improve the environment and economic opportunities in Rwanda. Back on campus, we explore how the Class of 2023 drives change at their school by researching and presenting the Green Report - a studentled audit of Nishimachi’s sustainability efforts. Our younger students are equally passionate about the environment and our humanities units in grade 5 teach students how to conduct research, surveys, interviews and debate their views.
Many in our Nishimachi community are working every day in pursuit of a more sustainable environment for our children’s future. Their efforts, too, are history in the making, as they proudly let their lives speak.
