Star Students in TV semi-finals Four Cheltenham students are through to the semi-finals of a TV national cookery competition. The team from Star Bistro at National Star College won their regional heat on the new ITV series ‘Food Glorious Food’ which will be aired at 8pm on Wednesday 10th April. The show is hosted by Loyd Grossman and Carol Vorderman, and Star Bistro team’s ‘Star Pimm’s Summer Jelly’ won the favour of the judges which include Stacie Stewart, Anne Harrison and Tom Parker Bowles. Stacie said the jelly was “absolute perfection – it’s all a beautiful taste of summer and the orange sauce is the taste of the show.” Students Georgina Ivins (18), Rachel Janes (20), Tristan Blick (19), and former student Joe Cook are now preparing for the semi-finals which take place this month. The winner of the series will collect £20,000 and have their dish produced and sold by Marks & Spencer. Along with bistro and college staff, the students recently watched the show in which they won their regional heat at a celebration dinner at the Hotel du Vin. Their Star Pimm’s Summer Jelly is on the menu at Star Tristan Blick adds the finishing touches. Bistro and they hope people

Fantastic Music Events at Café René Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival
The R&B flag for the 2013 Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival will again be flown by Café René – the perfect place for this prestigious summer event with its combination of a fabulous indoor venue plus an outdoor stage in a natural amphitheatre at Greyfriars. Now in its eleventh year, the Festival starts its exciting week of musical fulfilment on Monday 29th July with top toe-tapping Rhythm and Blues musicians and bands entertaining audiences for seven days. Café René are proud to announce how their weekend line up is looking so far: Saturday 3rd August kicks off with Damon T, Funke and the Two Tone Baby, Gotcha, Land of Giants, The Infinite Collective and the mighty John Fairhurst to headline this fantastic Saturday feast of music.
Monday 29th July to Sunday 4th August 2013
Sunday 4th August will be opened by Jake Watson followed by The Lawrence Jones Band, The Worried Men, Innes Sibun, Aynsley Lister and, widely recognised as one of the finest Blues singers, Connie Lush. The grand weekend finale not only has superb musical content but more entertainment throughout Saturday and Sunday can be enjoyed with face painting for the children whilst ‘grown ups’ only can experience the Café René ‘Real Ale & Cider Festival’. Supplement your hunger with a pig roast or the famous ‘René BBQ’. Each year the festival is FREE for all to enjoy. Throughout the week Café René help raise money through various fundraising activities for a well deserving cause (to be announced) – last year the sum raised was £2310.15 for Macmillan Cancer Support and they are always keen to better their fundraising efforts year on year, so please take some sheckles for the charity buckets.
2-11pm Saturday 25th May 2013 On Saturday 25th May 2013 Café René will once again be hosting the free charity inner-city festival – Rene:Gade Festival. Now in it’s fourth year, it has gone from strength to strength, becoming a date for people to remember, and a much loved event supported by the local music scene and its bands. 2012 saw the introduction of the ‘Man V Heat’ Chilli eating competition as a midway break in the festival, and it was a massive success. Surprisingly there was no shortage of participants, who were willing to pit their senses against Café René’s chilli, resulting in a head to head where two contestants bravely (or stupidly) took joint first place after a raw chilli eating round. Each year Café René also have an outside bar and their famous
René BBQ keeping festival goers full and refreshed throughout the day. Running from 2-11pm, it is a full day of live music and it’s free! All that Café René ask is that people donate whatever spare coins they have to the chosen charity (to be announced). This year some incredible bands will be playing – KSH and The Going Goods, Emmett Brown, Swift Manouver, 6Fears7, Prime Position & Blatantlee Sly, The Beat Harlows – and many more are being arranged. Café René are really looking forward to hosting the bands – after all, what’s better than music, friends, food and (hopefully) a bit of sunshine! The event is open to all ages until 7pm provided minors are accompanied by a responsible adult, parent or guardian at all times.

MOT
£25 WITH THIS VOUCHER FROM 1st April - 30th April 2013
Gloucesterʼs Guildhall, in Eastgate Street, is celebrating its 25th anniversary as an arts and entertainment venue. The more mature amongst you will remember that it used to be the City Councilʼs Headquarters. In the late 1980s a long lease of the ground floor was sold to the then Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society for a princely sum, allowing the Council to move to the Docks, restoring some of the warehouses and kickstarting the regeneration of the area. The upper floors were retained as the Guildhall Arts Centre, now renamed Gloucester Guildhall. Itʼs not been without its controversy. Over the years, it has received significant financial support from the council taxpayer and some have questioned this. But it cannot be disputed that the Guildhall provides a much-needed cultural venue in the heart of the city centre. Over the years it has played host to a number of rising stars, who have gone on to make the big time – including Blur, Oasis, Muse, Catherine Tate, Jo Brand and Dara OʼBriain. In more recent times, Iʼve seen Lily Allen and Charlotte Church perform there, and listened to Michael Portillo and Anne Widdecombe give talks. Robert Plant was an instant sell-out a year or so ago and John Motson was one of the most recent speakers. As well as live music and speakers, there is comedy, including the monthly “Big Laugh Café” event. We have just agreed a significant investment to upgrade the cinema to digital. Itʼs a very intimate facility and I remember watching Borat and the Kingʼs Speech there, although some more niche films are shown as well. There is an art gallery, conferencing and classes – which can be anything from creative writing to bellydancing! The Guildhall also hosts the annual Cajun & Zydeco Festival and has staged a number of the GODSʼ plays and pantomimes. Although its entrance onto Eastgate Street is narrow and can easily be missed, the building is a bit of a tardis and thereʼs a lot going on in there. Itʼs definitely worth a visit. Happy 25th birthday to the Guildhall – and may there be many more!

Sinatra is back!
David’s career has enjoyed many highlights but his personal favourite was a recording session that took place at The Abbey Road studios with a 35 piece orchestra. He was asked to recreate the original Sinatra recording of ‘New York, New York’ to promote the new Atari computer game ‘Tycoon City – New York’ which was released worldwide in 2006. The Producers claimed that they had listened to every Sinatra impersonator in the UK and USA and that David’s vocals were by far the most accurate and natural. Now that really is a compliment!

Gloucester Rugby to host JP Morgan Rugby 7s Gloucester Rugby are pleased to announce Kingsholm will be host to the first round of the J.P Morgan Premiership Rugby 7s Series on Thursday 1st August – kick-off 7.30pm. The series, which is now in its fourth year, will culminate in another high-octane final at Bath’s Recreation Ground on Friday 9th August. Former England International, World Cup winner and J.P. Morgan Premiership Rugby 7s ambassador Will Greenwood is relishing the start of the series: “It’s a great evening of summer rugby, a show case of the exceptional young talent who are coming through the Premiership ranks,” said Greenwood. “There’s no space to hide in this game and the series offers a fantastic platform to develop their skills, fitness and a taste of playing for their club on a big stage. It’s a cracking night of fast flowing rugby entertainment and I for one can’t wait to see all the action.” The competition is split into three qualifying legs and a final – contested by all 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs. Pool A sees Gloucester Rugby host Bath Rugby, Exeter Chiefs and Worcester Warriors – all battling for a place in the final a week later. The three pool stages and the final will be the first rugby union covered live on the new BT Sport channels. Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio has signed with BT Sport to become its leading rugby union expert and he can’t wait for the new 7s Series to kick off. Back in 1993 Dallaglio was a member of the successful England team that won the Sevens World

WIN TICKETS! Cup at Murrayfield. He said: “I loved my time playing Sevens, so fully understand how important it can be in the development of young players. This series has established itself in the rugby calendar and I expect the 2013 event to be a great showcase for Sevens. “Rugby’s admission into the Olympic Games, in Rio in 2016, will take the sport on to a new level and increase its global appeal.” Pool A (7.30pm Thursday 1st August): Bath Rugby, Exeter Chiefs, Gloucester Rugby (host club), Worcester Warriors. Pool B (7.30pm Friday 2nd August – Franklins Gardens): Leicester Tigers, London Welsh, Northampton Saints (host club), Sale Sharks. Pool C (7.30pm Saturday 3rd August – Allianz Park) Harlequins, London Irish, London Wasps, Saracens (host club). Final (7pm Friday 9th August – The Recreation Ground, Bath Rugby) Pools: Top 2 from each regional pool. For tickets and more information follow/visit: @jpmorganrugby7s / wwwjpmorgan7s.com

Executions at Gloucester Prison D id y o u k n ow ?
Situated in the Dock area of the City of Gloucester, lies the forbidding edifice of Gloucester Prison. Built on the site of the old Gloucester Castle in 1782, it was extensively rebuilt in 1840. The prison is one of several of its type throughout the country, and was scheduled for closure at the end of March 2013 on the grounds of high costs together with maintenance issues. English Heritage have said that the site requires considerable archaeological investigation before any development can take place, since there could be as many as 122 sets of human remains – all executed criminals – buried there. The prison was the venue for 120 executions during its
shooting of a lady friend and neighbour. All three were simultaneously executed by Robert Anderson Evans – an apprentice hangman. The three were quickly interred in the prison yard – their coffins filled in with quick lime to hasten decomposition. Ex-Major Herbert Armstrong – “the Hay poisoner” – was the last to be hanged at Gloucester, in 1921, for the murder of his wife, Kitty, which he persistently denied, even at the gallows existence as a penal institution – steps. the dead were always buried within the grounds, although some may have been first used for experiments in anatomical dissection. In January 1874, a unique triple hanging took place there. Edwin Bailey and Ann Berry were hanged for the murder of their illegitimate child and, at the same time, Charles Butt was executed for the murder by

Hurray it is now proper spring! Let’s hope the weather realises and gives us some lovely vitamin D sunshine after what has been a very long, wet winter. The garden centre is full of small plug plants in all sorts of enticing colours and buying bedding plants as plugs is a very good way to do it. However don’t just ‘bung’ them in the garden – they are used to a frost free environment in the nursery and will need to be kept in a cold greenhouse or conservatory for another 3 or so weeks to acclimatise them, and to make sure that they won’t be zapped by the frost (which still can come in April). This could be a good time to buy winter flowering trees and shrubs whose price may be reduced in garden centres – giving you a good show next winter. This is also a good time to plant evergreens into well prepared soil with a balanced fertiliser added. Make sure you keep them well watered during the summer if it is dry (we can but hope!). A good tip that I use is to put some of the gel granules that one uses in hanging baskets into the hole, mixed in with the soil, and this holds onto the water in dry spells. Start feeding your strawberries, raspberries etc. now as they will be flowering soon. A balanced fertiliser like Gromore or blood, fish and bone will promote successful flower and fruit production, good foliage and strong roots. Apply about 70g per sq metre. Begin feeding the lawn in April when growth starts again. Apply a proprietary spring/summer lawn fertiliser in two applications. It should be high in nitrogen to encourage the grass to grow nice and green. If you need to apply a weedkiller on the grass, apply it two or three weeks later when everything is growing strongly. Don’t mow for two or three days after applying, and if you have mown don’t apply weedkiller for two or three days. Don’t compost the clippings which have been treated with weedkiller. However, I personally don’t mind seeing a lawn containing daisies and other flowers, and life is easier if you learn to love them! As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

The Local Answer
Hello Readers, I hope you are well and had a good March, winning lots of money at the Festival! We have now entered a new financial year and I am sure the next 12 months will be just as challenging for us all as the last 12 months have been. I am very conscious of the fact that there has been lots of change across Gloucestershire Constabulary in the last few months – we now have a new Chief Constable in Suzette Davenport and Martin Surl is our newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner. I met our new Chief Constable last month and I was very impressed with her enthusiasm and commitment to Gloucestershire. I know she is working very closely with our commissioner and that they both share a deep passion to deliver the right services to you all, with a clear message that we will strive to make you all feel safe within your communities. My teams will be carrying out a series of events throughout the year and I shall let you know when these are programmed in. The first event that is planned is for Saturday 1st June and will be taking place in Gloucester Park – I shall let you all know some more details next month. Crime continues to decrease, which is great news, but we still experience ‘spikes’ in some ‘categories’. Regular readers will know my views on certain crime – specifically theft from motor vehicles. We have continued to target individuals who carry out these attacks, but again I am seeking your assistance. We are still finding that many of you are not locking your cars at night, which I find incredible. Every week I am seeing crime reports that state “the owner left their car insecure over night”. Please can I ask that you all spend a minute to think about this. I know we all live hectic lives but a second or two just to make sure your car is locked would save hours and hours of police work and take immense pressure off you in terms of not having to worry about what was taken, your insurance policy, etc. Many thanks in anticipation of your help! I wish you all a safe April and look Neil Smith forward to speaking to you in May. Gloucester Inspector

“Northwood provide landlords with a personal and yet very professional specialist letting service. For years I have been doing my own lettings but a combination of factors meant that it was time to seek some help. I was reluctant to go that route but when I met Nikki I felt that her values were right and decided to give Northwood a try. From the word go I have received sound advice and I continue to be impressed by the way that she and her whole team work seamlessly together on the various activities involved in letting my properties. Teaming up with Northwood was definitely a good move!” Mrs A Cheltenham “We use Northwoods Platinum scheme which has provided good reliable tennants. As agents they provide a professional service, dealing with any problems in a way which was stress free for us and achieved results” Paul and Anne Cheltenham “In my 3 years of dealing with Northwood I have found them to be a thoroughly professional business. Particularly efficient and effective, what makes them stand out from their competitors is the manner in which they treat with fairness, both landlords and tenants. Chris Cheltenham
