ANSWER
Hasn’t it been hot – let’s hope it continues during August! There is so much going on in and around Gloucester throughout this month, and into September. We really hope the sun shines on all the events – making them more enjoyable for everyone involved. There are numerous family events listed in our ‘What’s On’ section as well as a diverse range of talks, theatre, music, markets and festivals – something for everyone! If you’re wondering what to do with your youngsters during the long school holidays, why not give them a beautiful experience with nature and wildlife at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park – see centre pages. You can also get them lots of things they’ll need for their return to school in September at What! Store on Eastern Avenue – such good value too! Rugby fans are probably still smiling about the British & Irish Lions success in Australia and eager to witness some more top level entertainment. Although you’ll need to wait till 7th September for Gloucester Rugby’s first home match against Sale Sharks, there’s the wonderfully entertaining JP Morgan Premiership Rugby 7s at Kingsholm on 1st August. Why not support a great community initiative by popping along to Matson Avenue to try one of On Toast Gateway’s delicious toasties – there’s a great selection to choose from!
Have a great summer!

Delicious Dishes
The delicious fresh strawberries and raspberries used in this month’s recipes were kindly supplied by Primrose Vale – why not pay them a visit and use the voucher on their advertisement (page 21).
Strawberry & Raspberry Shortcakes
Ingredients: 225g/8oz self-raising flour; 1⁄2 teaspoon salt; 75g/3oz butter; 25g/1oz caster sugar; 1 egg; 4 tablespoons milk; milk to glaze. For the filling: 150ml/1⁄4 pint double cream; 1 rounded tablespoon icing sugar, sieved; 225g/8oz strawberries or raspberries, hulled.
Method: 1 Preheat oven to 220C, 425F, Gas 7. 2 Sift together flour and salt and rub in butter. Beat the egg with the milk. Add sugar and mix to a soft, but not sticky dough with egg and milk. 3 Turn out on to a lightly floured surface, knead quickly until smooth, then roll out to 1cm/1⁄2 inch thickness. 4 Cut into 6 rounds with an 8cm/31⁄2 inch plain cutter. 5 Place on a greased baking tray, brush tops with milk. 6 Bake in a hot oven for 10-12 minutes. 7 Cool on a wire tray but, whilst still warm, split each
shortcake in half by carefully pulling apart and not cutting with a knife. 8 To serve, slice the strawberries keeping 6 whole for decoration. Whip the cream and sweeten with icing sugar. Sandwich shortcakes together with cream and sliced strawberries or whole raspberries. 9 Dust tops with icing sugar and decorate serving plate with whole strawberries/raspberries.
Strawberry & Cream Sponge Cake We use McDougall’s Supreme Sponge flour, it makes the sponge so light, and for this recipe we use 2 x 20cm (8 inch) sandwich tins.
Ingredients & Method: 1 Weigh 4 medium eggs then use the same weight for your flour, caster sugar and margarine. 2 Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4. 3 Grease and line the base of your sandwich tins. 4 Put all the ingredients into a bowl and add 1tsp of vanilla extract. Whisk together until well combined, adding 15ml/1tbsp water. 5 Turn into the prepared tins and level the surface then bake for around 30 minutes until well risen, golden and firm to the touch. 7 Allow to cool in the tins for 5 minutes, then turn out and allow to cool fully on a wire rack. 8 Whip up some double cream and slice some of the strawberries. 9 Sandwich cake together with the cream and strawberry slices and finish the top with swirls of cream, whole strawberries and – if feeling creative – some chocolate decorations and a dusting of icing sugar. The toast of Gloucester! Gloucester 2012 Mayor David Brown and local people gather for the opening of On Toast Gateway.
Mr Toastie meeting Dave Purchase when the building work started on the Gloucester Services site in March.
Sarah Dunning (Westmorland Family), Tristan Tregartha (Buckingham Group Construction), Dave Purchase and Mark Gale with toasties at the ‘cutting the sod’ event in March.
Situated at The Shop Parade in Matson Avenue, ‘On Toast Gateway’ is a community co-op producing fantastic toasties to ‘grab and go’ as well as providing new training opportunities and support for the local community. Mark Gale of Gloucestershire Gateway Trust has been able to coordinate the development of this enterprise with strong support from Dave Purchase who was already running ‘On Toast’ at West Quay in Gloucester Docks. Dave remains heavily involved with the management of the Matson venture. The members of the community co-op include Redwell Road Youth Centre, Matson & Robinswood Community Association, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, GL Communities, and On Toast. Together the group is working extremely hard to ensure they soon become ‘The Toast of Gloucester’! This wonderful community business initiative is providing great local food of excellent quality to cater for Gloucester’s diverse tastes. There’s a superb variety on offer, including ‘Hawain’, ‘Swedish’, ‘Italian’, ‘Big Breakfast’ and On Toast Gateway’s very own speciality ‘The Matsoner’ – full of chicken, bacon and cheese! The shop is open from 10am-2pm MondayFriday and 9am-1pm on Saturdays, and there’s plenty of free parking which makes picking up a delicious brunch or lunch really easy. Those of you in a particular hurry can even phone orders through in advance on 01452 413864. The community business opened in Matson in September 2012 with the support of the Westmorland Family, who are developing the new Gloucester motorway services located on the M5 between Junctions 11A and 12. The coop plans to provide pre-employment training and work placement opportunities for some local residents prior to taking jobs at Gloucester services. On Toast Gateway also hosts a wide range of community services and is a contact point for local people seeking work at Gloucester Services. In June this year, with the support of the Gloucester Services builders Buckingham Group Construction Ltd, the co-op expanded and opened a mobile catering unit on the Gloucester Services site to feed hungry builders. Why don’t you join the many local people already supporting this great community initiative by popping along to On Toast Gateway to pick up a delicious toastie? There’s 10% off with the voucher below during August!

Leader’s Life
with Councillor Paul James
Satisfying a basic human need Leader of Gloucester City Council
Housing is one of the basic human needs. And it’s an important part of the Council’s work – whether it is finding somewhere for a family under the threat of homelessness, managing the Council’s housing stock of around 4,500 units or planning for the next generation of growth. Housing also plays a big role in regeneration. The £40 million we have invested, with Government help, to modernise our council homes has improved the quality of life for our tenants and made our estates better places. We are now working on the options for future management and maintenance of those properties and the regeneration of our estates in the long term.
Supporting the local economy
More homes in the city centre, like the Greyfriars development which is currently on site, will help to support both the daytime and nighttime economy. And it can regenerate brownfield sites like the former Gardner Denver factory in Barton Street, now called Diamond Jubilee Gardens. There’s no doubt we need more homes. Housebuilding under the last Government fell to a post-war low, but has started to pick up thanks to initiatives like ‘Help to Buy’. We are currently working with Cheltenham and Tewkesbury councils on a ‘core strategy’ for our three areas. Experts say that we need over 30,000 extra homes between us over the next 20 years. This is due to people living longer, household size falling and economic growth, amongst other factors.

The Local Answer
But the housing needs building in the right places. So we are planning to consult from September onwards on our ‘preferred options’ for major sites and have just finished consultation on the smaller sites within the city boundaries. Gloucester has grown a lot over the years with areas such as Quedgeley, Abbeymead and Kingsway. But we will run out of land before too long and will depend on our neighbouring areas to take a share of our growth. We have a legal and, I believe, a moral duty to provide for housing need, so it has to go somewhere. So please do let us know your views on where that growth should go – visit www.gct-jcs.org for more information.

Pictured above, this is beef and dairy cattle country situated on the Mid North Coast. Established in the 1830s as a cattle station, a township grew here from about 1855. With a present population of only around 2,300, apart from farming it is well-known as a tourist destination set in stunningly beautiful countryside. During its history, some gold mining took place, and in recent years coal mining and timber have become important to the community.

Established in 1792, it took its name from Prince William, Duke of Gloucester (1776-1834), a grandson of King George II. There were few permanent settlers here until 1812 when a lumber merchant, Braddish Billings, cleared 1,400 acres of forest there. After a comprehensive survey in 1820, many others began to arrive and the community has grown to a population of over 120,000 today. It became a City in its own right in 1981. Gloucester County, New Brunswick, Canada A mainly French-speaking area of 1,800 square miles, with a long coastal area bordering Chaleur Bay and the Gulf of St Lawrence. It incorporates 18 municipalities, the largest being Bathurst, with a population of 12,000. Its primary industries are fishing forestry and mining.

Davies knows the importance of early fixtures The first draft of Aviva Premiership fixtures have been revealed, with Gloucester playing at home three times in the opening five weeks. The Cherry and Whites kick off the Premiership season at home to Sale Sharks before travelling to Saracens the following week. Northampton Saints are the next visitors to Kingsholm, before Gloucester travel to Newcastle and round off the opening block of five games at home to Exeter Chiefs. The Premiership then takes a back seat for a couple of weeks as the first batch of European fixtures take place, and Director of Rugby Nigel Davies admitted that getting off to a good start is crucial to Gloucester’s ambitions:

‘We know what we’ve got to do’ need to be. So that block of five games at the “Last year maybe by saying top four we aimed a little too low. Like every other team we want to win the Premiership. We know what that will take in the league, to give us the best chance to do that in the knockout stages. There’s only one team that’s finished outside the top two in the league that’s won the knockout stages. “So we know what we’ve got to do, it’s quite clear now we’ve seen the fixtures where we need to pick up the points. And there’s no doubt there will be ups and downs along the way. “But to stay focused on the task in hand we have to realise in any one time in the season exactly where we are, by breaking down each game into how many points we want to gain 17 AUGUST TUDOR-FEST 6-9pm. start of the season is going to be hugely significant as to how the rest of the season pans out. “We’re not looking much further ahead than that block of games right now. You’ve got to go one bite at a time, at the same time as realising the bigger picture. We’ve already planned how many points we want from the season, and where we aim to pick those up, and we’ll be reassessing those targets constantly. “We’ll take it one step at a time, and if we were to find ourselves looking at February right now, then we would not be completely focused on the absolute main challenge. That block of five is vital, and when we come off the back of that we can reassess.” Shrek, Mamma Mia, Billy Elliot and Matilda. From Michael Morpurgo – Children’s Laureate 2003-5 and the acclaimed writer of War Horse – comes this award winning tale of enduring friendship, The Butterfly Lion. The show runs from 16th21st September and, courtesy of The Everyman Theatre, we’ve got a pair of tickets each for two lucky readers to win in our draw. From the African veld to the rolling Cotswolds and the battlefields of First World War France, follow the adventures of Bertie and the White Lion as they strive to find sanctuary amongst devastating adversity. When the orphaned white lion cub that Bertie has rescued is sold to a circus owner and shipped out of Africa to Europe, Bertie vows he will see his friend again. Little does he realise the adventurous, romantic, shocking turns his life will take before that momentous day finally comes. Butterfly Lion stars Gwen Taylor, one of Britain’s leading actresses. Gwen has enjoyed great success on stage and screen – much loved for her role as Amy in hit TV comedy Duty Free, and for playing the title role in the ITV sitcom Barbara. To enter our draw just send your name, address and telephone number to ‘Butterfly Lion’, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Cheltenham, GL53 9QS. Alternatively, email details to competitions@thelocalanswer.co.uk – please state ‘Butterfly Lion’ in the subject line. Closing date: Friday 13th August 2013.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

In t he G arden with Julia Smith
This is the time of year that the garden can start to lose colour and interest. Sometimes a garden is really pretty in spring and early summer but loses its ‘oomph’ by August. If this describes your garden you can do something about it by popping in some ‘annuals’ from the garden centre. They are full of delicious looking pots of Cosmos, Zinnias and others which will brighten up a tired border. Think about planting some of the later flowering perennials such as Echinacea purpurea (the mauve cone-flower), Rudbeckia (a lovely yellow daisy), and Asters (the good old Michaelmas daisies) which will flower well into autumn and come in colours that look stunning in the early evening light, and early mornings covered in dew. If you want some spinach to overwinter in the veg patch, late August is the time to sow it. Sow it in a spot in full sun and before sowing apply a general fertiliser like Growmore (100g per square metre) to give it a good start. Follow the directions on the packet for distances etc. Spinach is one of those crops that I wouldn’t be without as it goes on producing month after month and most people do like eating it (unlike sprouts!) . If going on holiday, stand your pots in a paddling pool with a couple of inches of water in the shade and then you don’t feel too bad asking a neighbour to just top up the water in the pool every couple of days. If you have been growing runner beans and courgettes etc. let your neighbour pick them as an enticement to come over and water, and it keeps the plants producing as well! Keep your tomatoes and peppers consistently moist throughout the growing season or the roots don’t absorb nutrients properly and can get blossom end rot (light brown spots appear at the flower end of the fruit). Only apply a liquid fertiliser when the soil is moist. A nice job to do on a balmy summer evening is deadheading flowers, which prolongs the flowering potential of roses, dahlias, delphiniums etc., as well as things like Petunias in your hanging baskets. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design, do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

Matters with Roger Downes
Teamwork
The key decisions made in running a business tend to be made in the boardroom. By default therefore, these decisions are limited to the input of those invited to be part of boardroom discussions. But are these businesses missing out on the input of those not involved at an executive level? The classic case of lights hidden under bushels? Itʼs true that some businesses can operate under what is effectively a dictatorship, but these instances are rare. A business leader must command respect for what he or she does, not demand it simply because of his/her status. So how do good business leaders uncover these hidden lights and maximise input from their team? Itʼs all about generating productive debate in an environment where noone feels exposed or vulnerable. Firstly, and most obviously, there is the ʻdo as I doʼ approach of upfront leadership. Having done what youʼre asking colleagues to do and not being shy of putting in the hard work yourself. When people put forward suggestions, a good leader will encourage development of the idea rather than become defensive about the status quo. Itʼs also important to understand that individuals in a team communicate in different ways. Outgoing people will thrive on debating an idea with you; more conservative contributors will want to consider their input more quietly. However you get the input, the important thing is that you do it. Two heads are better than one, so think what the whole team can do ... You will have a motivated and happy workforce, and the benefits in terms of generating profits are obvious! Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

These ‘customers’ have witnessed the professional and friendly manner in which Anderson Recruitment has delivered quality employees and progressive opportunites and, as a consequence, have reciproctated by demonstrating a great loyalty to Anderson Recruitment since its conception.

We pride ourselves on a growing reputation for delivering the right people or roles for the company’s or individual’s needs. We believe this attitude to customer service for clients and candidates is the main reason we enjoy ‘repeat’ business from our customers.

Policing in response to the badger cull in Gloucestershire Many people will be aware that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is allowing a pilot cull of badgers to go ahead in parts of west Gloucestershire at any point from 1 June 2013. We understand this is a sensitive issue and we want to make sure that you are clear about the responsibilities of the police. The proposed pilot cull is a Defra-managed issue under licence from Natural England and it will be up to them and the operating company carrying out the cull to decide where and when it takes place. Our role is to provide a police response to the cull and any incidents around it. This is called Operation Themis. It will be neutral and independent of the cull itself. We will be impartial, even-handed and fair to everyone, whatever their views, interest or involvement in the pilot scheme. We will:
