ANSWER
February – the month of St Valentine. If you intend on taking your loved one out for a meal, you will be spoilt for choice in this month’s magazine. So many lovely venues and tempting menus, browse our food and entertainment section to make your choice. If you would prefer to cook at home we have a stunning but very easy to make dessert for you in our Delicious Dishes column. Thinking of romance, there are lots of wedding fairs/open days for you to attend, and we still have a great offer on from The Grooms Room. As we write, snow is still on the ground – but it will soon be gone and we can start thinking about our gardens. What! has a wonderful selection of seed potatoes, bulbs, shrubs and seeds to tempt you with. This is also the month we think about spring cleaning – whether it be having your carpets refreshed, a lick of paint or new wallpaper, or getting your patio or roof revived. See what our advertisers have got to offer. Half term will be upon us soon so why not take the children for some fun at the fair at Over Farm or visit the deer and birds at Prinknash? Gloucester Rugby are again offering readers the chance to win tickets – this time to see them play Worcester Warriors. Also, sports fans will be pleased to see they are once again offering their great value ‘Super Sporting Ticket’ to enable you to watch them play London Welsh at Kingsholm and visit Prestbury Park for racing on ‘St Patrick’s Thursday’.

Beautiful restaurant, excellent food and great value for money! Members of The Local Answer recently enjoyed an evening out at Gloucester’s newly refurbished Spice Rooms & Steakhouse. Here’s what Alison Hambling – one of the editorial team – thought about the experience ... I must admit I am not always a fan of too hot a curry, so do tend to order with an air of caution – but I need not have worried. We ordered an array of dishes to share and every one was absolutely heavenly – full of wonderful flavours without ruining your taste buds. And, best of all, with prices ranging from £5.95 to £10.95 for main courses, you don’t need to break the bank – fantastic value! The Spice Rooms is a family run business – they have managed highly successful restaurants in Cheltenham for over 20 years. This life time of experience certainly shines through with the transformation of this Gloucester venue into a fabulous place to dine in every way – great atmosphere, excellent service and delicious food. The comfortable furniture, warm decor and relaxing traditional Indian background music combine to create the delightful ambiance of the restaurant. Spice Rooms is a spacious venue and an ideal place to enjoy a night out with friends and family. Our host – Shez Ud Din – enthusiastically explained the transformation of the restaurant since they took it over 3 months ago. Even Gordon Ramsay would have been impressed with their amazing achievements. The quality, and presentation, of the food was superb. The uniquely spiced feathered steak was a particular speciality we were interested to try, and it was delicious. Another of our favourites was most definitely the Payaa – a tender slow cooked lamb shank in a cardamom and clove jus, served with new potatoes. Spice Rooms are giving readers of The Local Answer a free bottle of wine for two people to share when dining in during February 2013. To take advantage of this offer simply hand over the voucher (right) when you arrive. We strongly recommend you book your table in advance – call 01452 500170.

Delicious Dishes Valentine Pink Meringues with Raspberry Cream
Ingredients: For the meringues: 4 egg whites; 1 pinch salt; 300g caster sugar; 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract; pink food colouring. For the raspberry cream: 75g fresh or frozen raspberries; 2 tbsp icing sugar; 400ml stiffly whipped cream. Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 140C/gas 1. Line two baking trays with greaseproof paper. 2 Put the egg whites into a large clean bowl with a pinch of salt. Whisk until soft peaks form. Gradually add the caster sugar one tablespoon at a time, whisking between each addition, until it has all been added and the meringue is satiny and forms stiff peaks when the whisk is lifted from the mixture. 3 Fold in the vanilla extract with a large metal spoon. Using a piping bag fitted with a 1.5cm nozzle or a spoon, pipe or scoop the mixture into individual meringues about 7cm wide onto the prepared baking trays. 4 For the ripple colour effect, dip a wooden or metal skewer into the food colouring and swirl it through each meringue.

5 Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Test one by lifting and gently pressing on the base of a meringue- it should be crisp but give way with a bit of pressure - they will crisp more when cooling. Turn off the oven, and leave them in there to cool with the oven door slightly ajar for best results. If possible, let them cool completely in the oven. 6 When ready to serve, make the raspberry cream. Put the raspberries and sugar in a food processor and whiz until smooth. Push the mixture through a sieve into a bowl to remove the pips. Fold as much puree as you wish through the whipped cream to give a lovely pink colour. 7 Dollop a generous tablespoon of the cream on one half of the meringue and sandwich together with another meringue. Serve with some fresh raspberries and any leftover puree.

Greyhound Racing in Gloucester
Every Thursday and Saturday evening you could attend a Greyhound Race Meeting in Longlevens. The stadium – now lost under new housing developments, part of which is aptly named Greyhound Gardens – stood just off Cheltenham Road by the main roundabout on the A40. Longlevens stadium opened its doors in 1935 and, at its height, attracted over 1,000 spectators a night – all eager to place a bet with one or other of the on-site bookmakers. A decline in interest during the 1960s and 70s led to the closure of the course in October 1983. Essentially the “poor mans horse racing”, greyhound racing in Gloucester had its origins via Gloucester Football Club, founded in 1873 where Rugby, Football and Dog Racing all took place, but it was not until after the Great War that a custom built centre for dog racing was established at Longlevens. The principal race became known as The Grand National of the West, where the dogs raced over a distance of 500 yards for a magnificent challenge cup. This was last staged in 1965. Apart from Greyhound Gardens, the only other tangible reminder of its existence is the Greyhound Public House – no dogs allowed!

Leader’s Life
with Councillor Paul James Leader of Gloucester City Council
HEALTH & BEAUTY The Permanent MakeUp Studio
February is the time of year we come to set our budget – allocating money to our priorities, and deciding the level of council tax that residents have to pay. Itʼs never an easy time, with many competing demands. With the current economic climate, it is even more difficult as councils are expected to play their part in helping to reduce the national deficit and manage with less cash from central government. Weʼve been making substantial savings over the last few years – around £6 million in total out of a budget of £18 million. Weʼve managed to do this whilst protecting the services that matter to you. Weʼve slimmed down as an organisation, cutting out levels of management and working in partnership with others. This has meant we donʼt need as much office space, so weʼve leased three floors of our North Warehouse building to Regus plc, a global serviced office provider – reducing our costs, bringing in an income and generating jobs for the local economy. Our partners, like Enterprise – who provide our refuse and recycling, street cleaning and grounds maintenance services – and Aspire, who run GL1 and the Oxstalls Tennis Centre, will be working with us to achieve the savings we need. Weʼve managed to make savings at the same time as keeping the council tax down. This year we are proposing to freeze the council tax for a third year running. This means that the average rise over the last nine years has been just over 2% – compared with an average of 10% for the previous decade. Weʼre also planning to leave parking charges pretty much as they are, after the major changes we made last year in reducing the tariff. The number of people using the car park has increased, despite the poor weather last year, meaning we were right to make the bold changes that we did. Weʼre always interested to hear your views on our proposals. For more information, please see our website www.gloucester.gov.uk. The Local Answer

Quality work - fantastic service C&L Windows have been established in Gloucester since 1989, they are a medium size business who pride themselves on the quality of their work and the service they provide. Their modest showroom is located in the centre of Gloucester, where you can call in and talk to Louise and arrange an appointment with the company director Nigel Martin, who will make a home visit and discuss the choice of products, colours available and your requirements. Nigel will then arrange a survey with his colleague Paul Cleal, Installations Director who will survey the project.
“There are no high pressure sales, contract signing deadlines, gimmicks or cost-cutting shortcuts just a fair price for a quality product.” You only have to look around the showroom to see the walls adorned with genuine messages of thanks and appreciation for jobs well done. The majority of their projects are from existing customers and recommendations. C&L Windows have the expertise to deliver individual requirements, their Diamond Cut Glass Ltd company led by Larrie Lane provides the hand-finished service for almost any high specification glass requirement just across the road at the Morelands Trading Estate. They do not use sub-contractors, using their own team of 6 fitters with the skills to deliver any of your double glazing needs.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

In t he G arden with Julia Smith
As I write this article in January, I really don’t know what Mother Nature has in store for us weather wise. However, even if it is mild and sunny don’t be fooled into starting to sow too much too soon unless you have a greenhouse or you will get into all kinds of difficulties! All that said, you can buy some early potatoes such as the variety ‘Accent’and put them in individually in egg boxes to ‘chit’ in a cool, bright place (don’t let them get frosted in an unheated greenhouse, so if frost is forecast cover in fleece and then uncover again in the morning). Chitting is just a term for sprouting, and you want sprouts about 1.5cm long ready to plant out in late March. This is the perfect time of year to get to grips with putting stakes in your borders. You remember what happened last year (and if you were like me probably every year before that too!) when you didn’t get round to it and by the time your peonies, or poppies or whatever had started flopping it was too late! Hazel or birch is the ideal thing to use for ‘pea sticks’ (not just for peas!) and now is a great time to cut it as the sap rises and it gets a little more pliable, and before the leaves appear. Make different sized support structures to suit the plants, weaving and tying in with garden twine. Things like Asters or Achilleas work well with black plastic netting stretched between four stakes – it soon disappears when the plants get going and you can always add a higher level of netting later on using the same stakes. If the weather is good and the soil fairly dry underfoot you could even take the first lawn cut of the year (I know it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes ago that you were thankfully putting that mower away for the year). Keep the blades high so that you only take off the very top of the grass, this will keep the grass stronger and you can reduce the height as the season progresses thus making it harder for moss and weeds to take hold. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design, do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

The new Barton & Tredworth Local Policing Team
Hello Readers – I hope your New Year has started well and the weather is not too cold for you. As promised in last month’s edition please see the new Barton and Tredworth Local Policing Team above. Sergeant Tim Wood has taken over the team here and is joined by PC Debbie Sutton, PC Matt Bishop, PC Bobby Bolland and PC Jo Cryer. Tim and his team will be spending a significant part of their shifts getting to know you all. They will be carrying out numerous community events to increase their familiarity with the area and to make themselves accessible to you all if you need any advice or support. We have also created a Twitter account so please follow us @bartonst_police – it will give you more of an insight into the activities that the team carry out, and give you the opportunity to make contact with us. Please take advantage of this as it will be great to hear your feedback. As we move into the second month of 2013 our crime areas of concern still remain the same as at the end of last year, and we have continued to target our most prolific offenders – with many of them spending Christmas 2012 in prison! This is not something that I am “gloating” about as Christmas is a family time BUT if you commit crime and you cause harm to the communities that you live in you will pay the price. We all have choices in life – no matter how hard they may be sometimes – but it’s about personal responsibility, it’s about being accountable for your actions and behaviour and, ultimately, it’s about being a good citizen and caring about each other. My team and I are committed to making your communities a safe place to live. We will continue to strive throughout 2013 to achieve this but we also need your help. We will shortly be carrying out a campaign to increase our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators within your communities and if any of you wish to participate please let my team know when they make contact with you. I wish you all a safe February and look Neil Smith forward to speaking to you in March. Gloucester Inspector
