... the story so far... WHEN Mary-Jess Leaverland was nine years old she began singing in the Gloucester Cathedral Youth Choir, and this was just the start of her 12 years in the spot light. At the age of 15 she travelled to China for the first time and sang at the opening ceremony of a major school where she attracted a lot of local press coverage. She has been a member of the National Youth Southern Girls Choir of Great Britain and has taken part in many competitions and charity events. In 2009 she flew to Nanjing, China as part of her degree in Music and Chinese Studies at the University of Sheffield. It was there that she entered ‘Min Xing Chang Fan Tian’ (I want to sing to the stars). With her unique voice and grasp of the Chinese language, Mary-Jess took the competition by storm and the 70 million viewers took her to their hearts. Her performances of ‘When You Believe’ and ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ (both hugely popular songs in China) in the live final saw her to victory and cemented her position as a serious singer in the Chinese community.

After returning home for Christmas, her story sparked a media frenzy leading Mary-Jess in to the centre of a bidding war from all the major record and management companies. She eventually signed a recording contract with Decca Records, Universal, and to Jonathan Shalit’s ROAR Management. 2010 saw Mary-Jess record her debut album ‘Shine’ with filmic textures and a contemporary flare – she recorded the string section from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road and worked with some of China’s most accomplished musicians to add a touch of the orient. Before ‘Shine’ was released on the 8th of August 2011, Mary-Jess embarked on a 23-date UK tour as Russell Watson’s special guest. She has since toured with

Chris and Abby Eaton, performed in Trafalgar Square for Chinese New Year and sang the Downton Abbey theme tune ‘Did I Make the Most of Loving You?’ with lyrics by the legendary Don Black. The theme was included in the ‘Now that’s what I call Classical’ album, and her second single ‘Glorious’ was included on the Rugby World Cup ‘World in Union’ album. She was also invited to sing Faith Hill’s ‘There You’ll Be’ on the Band of the H.M. Royal Marines album ‘Summon the Heroes’ due to her family connections with the forces. In January 2012, MaryJess won both the ‘Album of the Year’ award and the ‘Best Newcomer’ award

from classical-crossover.co.uk. Since then, not only has she sung to royalty in Windsor Castle, but she has also sung in memory of pop royalty – she was invited to sing ‘Don’t Cry Alone’ at Robin Gibb’s house at the garden party which followed the unveiling of his National Heritage Foundation Plaque. One of the highlights of Mary-Jess’ career so far was when she performed a show stopping version of ‘Abide With Me’ with The Band of The Blues and Royals at this year’s FA Cup Final in Wembley Stadium – in front of a live audience of 90,000 people and a worldwide television audience of potentially 300 million! In December 2012 she released her latest single ‘Keep the Flame’ – a cover of Johnny Coppin’s original track. With all this experience at only 22 years of age, the future promises to be bright for Mary-Jess.

Famous Face

A rising star

WIN

a signed EP & Photo

ON our cover this month is rising star and local lady MaryJess Leaverland. Born in Gloucester, she attended St Peter’s R.C. High School and Ribston Hall High School Sixth Form before moving on to study at Sheffield University. This beautiful young lady with the fabulous voice has already enjoyed much fame but, having met her, it’s clear she has her feet firmly on the ground. She is a very warm, caring person who – from an early age – has been ‘driven’ in her passion for music and song. She is also a strong ‘family person’ and was looking forward to a Sunday roast with her grandfather following our meeting. Mary-Jess is a Gloucestershire Gem who her home county can be proud of. She sang at the recent Tree of Light ‘switch on’ event outside the Guildhall in Gloucester – a great fundraising initiative organised by the city’s Rotary Club and Council. On 9th December her new single – Keep the Flame – was released, and on 20th December Mary-Jess performed the song at Cheltenham Town Hall with the original writers, including famous singer/songwriter Johnny Coppin. In 2013 Mary-Jess will be recording two albums. One of them will be a Christmas album and fans can see her perform the songs live as she tours the UK including, of course, a Gloucestershire venue. Mary-Jess is also planning a couple of visits to China in support of ‘Half the Sky’ – a Chinese charity helping orphaned and abandoned children – for which she is now an ambassador. You can read about Mary-Jess’s story so far on the page opposite, along with her many achievements to date – there will, undoubtedly, be many more to follow!

Mary-Jess has kindly given us a signed photograph and signed copy of her Glorious EP for one lucky reader to win! To enter our draw, just send your name, address and telephone number(s) to: Mary-Jess Draw, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Ullenwood, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL53 9QS. Closing date: 11th January 2013.

Good luck!

Leader’s Life

with Councillor Paul James Leader of Gloucester City Council

As 2012 ends and we usher in the New Year, itʼs worth reflecting on whatʼs happened in the last 12 months, and what we can look forward to in the year ahead. 2012 was a special year for the country with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. Indeed, we had the visit of the Olympic Torch to Gloucester in May, a great weekend of Jubilee events in June and we even presented Prince Edward with the traditional Lamprey Pie to pass on to his Mother! It was a great year for events with the first Garden Party at Gloucester Quays, the biggest and best Food Festival and Victorian Market yet, a reinvigorated Carnival and our first major History Festival. The new M&S opened in Eastgate Street, leading a charge of numerous retailers coming to the city despite the difficult climate. In 2013, Iʼm looking forward to an announcement (hopefully) confirming Gloucesterʼs status as a host city for the Rugby World Cup 2015. The new state of the art cinema will open at Gloucester Quays with a host of new restaurants alongside it. The transformation of the Railway Triangle will move to a new level. And work on the former Gloscat site at Greyfriars will begin in earnest. Hopefully the opening of TK Maxx in the old M&S Northgate Street store will maintain the momentum of

new retailers entering the city. And weʼll have a strong events programme, including the fourth Tall Ships Festival, the Mystery Plays and the world-famous Three Choirs Festival. We are fortunate that 2012 ended without a repeat of the awful floods of 2007. So Iʼm hoping for a dry 2013 including, if itʼs not too much to ask, something resembling a summer! I hope the economy will continue to recover and unemployment stays on a downward path. And if Gloucester Rugby can maintain their promising start to the season and make the Premiership play-offs I, and many others in the city, will be happy! My very best wishes to all Local Answer readers for a great 2013.

The Kingʼs School

Kingʼs School, Gloucester was founded in 1541 by a proclamation of King Henry VIII – he of the six wives – although there has been a school associated with the Cathedral since the 12th Century. Originally charged with the teaching of Greek and Latin, it had close connections with the Cathedral and was almost snuffed-out during the Civil Wars 1642-1649 and subsequent reformation. Choristers from the Cathedral joined as pupils in the 18th Century, when the establishment was first referred to as The Kingʼs School. Situated in the middle of Gloucester it is based around several buildings housing learning centres for Maths, Art, Music, Design and Science, and itʼs pupils are aged between 5 and 18. All students are members of “houses” named after two important religious personages: Laud (Dean of Gloucester) and Serlo (Archbishop), and after Wheeler (1684-1712), a former headmaster – recognised as one of the most distinguished educationalists of his day. The school suffered a major fire in 1849 which destroyed not only a main building, but also the extensive library, built up by headmaster Wheeler over many years. The School owns Archdeacon Meadow – a gift from the citizens of Gloucester. Amongst its former pupils were the composer and poet Ivor Gurney, and Frederick William Harvey – the Laureate of Gloucester. Both are famed for their evocative writings on aspects of the Great War. In more modern times, the actor and comedian Simon Pegg attended The Kingʼs Junior School.

The 400+ seat arena currently hosts four televised snooker tournaments per year, along with monthly comedy nights, conferences, and a variety of musical and other events. The snooker complex provides three practise rooms, a players lounge (with a wonderful ‘snooker table’ feature bar) and a media centre. Unless you keep abreast of what’s happening in the world of snooker, you could be forgiven for not knowing about Gloucester’s very own world-class snooker academy, and it’s recent expansion into an extensive entertainment centre. The Capital Venue is the brainchild of entrepreneur businessman Paul Mount who decided to build the £1.8m complex in memory of his sister, Kay Suzanne, who died of breast cancer at the age of 39. Paul said: “We shared a passion for snooker, so The Capital Venue was the best way I could both honour Kay Suzanne’s memory and continually raise money for this wonderful cause.” Paul gives players – ranging from top professionals to complete novices – the opportunity to train in Gloucester. He has his own team of professional players – known as the ‘Pink Army’ because of their pink-backed waistcoats – who promote and raise thousands of pounds for the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. The centre also encourages young apprentices who have been given the opportunity to fulfil their dreams of becoming world-class players, with the full support and backing of the academy. The Capital Venue is the world’s leading snooker facility for the top players to train on the very best SWSA Star equipment. These premier snooker tables are covered with Strachan cloth which has been produced right here in Gloucestershire at Lodgemore Mills in Stroud since 1890, and adds to these prestigious tables being highly sought after world-wide. The academy is now run on a day-to-day basis by Commercial Director Morray Dolan – a worldranking pool player – who wants to promote the

IS CONDENSATION IN YOUR HOME? Keep Warm and Save Money Condensation affects all of our homes in varying degrees at some time or another, but some more than others. In buildings this would form on cold walls, mirrors, window and door surfaces. Thus the cause of condensation is over saturation of the air; moisture condensing visibly on relatively cold surfaces. The atmosphere around us is never completely dry and always contains some moisture even though it may not be visible. In the confined spaces of rooms in our homes, there is great risk of the air to absorb moisture, from cooking, bathing and even breathing. To cut down central heating running costs, improved insulation is applied to areas where heat loss occurs, namely the roof space and walls. To reduce heat loss even further WINDOWS AND DOORS are often draught proofed, draught proofing your homes may make them much more comfortable.

By Installing C & L’s energy efficient Windows you can save up to 28% per year on your heating bills and considerable reduce the condensation if not eradicate it completely on your Windows. We are also specialists in: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Quality Workmanship Affordable prices Peace of mind

I received a lovely early present this Christmas of an indoor seed sprouter. It is a square box with several trays, one above the other and a selection of seeds to sprout. You can put it on a window sill or work top and keep it moist. Apparently the sprouts are really.nutritious and a tasty addition to salads in the bleak winter months. I have grown mustard and cress on a flannel like most school children but this is a league above. I have found a similar one on Amazon called Bergs Biosalad (it is Danish) but there must be lots of different ones around. Remember to recycle your Christmas tree if you have a real one. The garden centres quite often will take them, or the local recycling centre or if you have a brown wheelie bin you can lop off the branches and stuff it in there. January is the right time to give wisteria its winter pruning. Cut back the whippy stems that have grown last year to two or three buds. This will create flowering ‘spurs’ to bloom in the summer. Do take care if you have to use ladders – make sure the bottom is secure on a flat surface and don’t lean over to make it unstable. If you have a vast wisteria that has gone beserk after being ignored for many years it may pay to get in a specialist gardener who can get it back into some semblance of order and enable you to carry on with it yourself in future years. Another thing that it is useful to do now is to collect material for making pea sticks to support plants in your borders in the summer. Hazel.and birch twigs are the best ones to use. Pea sticks look much more natural than using readymade supports and can be bent and semisnapped to create the desired shapes. Leave them tied up in bundles in a corner somewhere outside and put them in place early on in the season to enable the plants to grow through them for a natural look. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year

guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and 3DXO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Itʼs the time of year when we are making resolutions, most of which are broken once the novelty has worn off. Rather than spend too long on mine, I thought I would look at some of the things that might or might not happen in the financial world in 2013. I wrote last month about RTI – the massive change that is going to affect anyone paid a salary in April next year. It requires major faith in HMRCʼs software and I can see either a computer crash in April or a delay in implementation as HMRC realises it isnʼt ready. IT plays an increasingly large part in our lives and the rapid expansion of social networking sites is at the heart of recent developments. Properly used, such sites are exciting and productive. But they are also a disaster waiting to happen and I predict a major financial scandal next year as a result of misuse or misbehaviour on one of these sites. It would be easy to be downbeat about the economy but letʼs hope that the news will be positive and Iʼll go for growth being recorded every quarter in 2013. Forecasting what the Chancellor might say in his Budget this far ahead is fraught with dangers, but he has to keep fuel costs in check to stop business grinding to a halt. So Iʼll say no fuel duty rises next year. And finally Sir des Champs wins the Cheltenham Gold Cup and I collect on my flutter! Whatever is in store for you, may I wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Happy New Year! I hope you are all enjoying the festive season and have a great New Year’s Eve! As we move into 2013 I am very pleased to let you know that we have created a larger Local Beat Team at Barton Street Police Station. We have had new officers join the team and in next month’s edition I shall introduce them all to you. We finished 2012 with our Neil Smith crime figures on a little bit of a rise - many of you have been leaving Gloucester Inspector your vehicles insecure at night and opportunist thieves have been enjoying themselves as a result. Burglaries have also continued to occur in homes and work places and while we have had some wonderful results recently around arresting some of our more prolific offenders, I still need your help. We will continue to have dark early evenings for the next few months until the Spring gets here so please consider buying light timers, leaving lights on and making sure the exterior of your home is secure. For further advice regarding home security please visit www.gloucestershire.police.uk , where many links can be found that are useful. I am also very, very keen to promote Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) as we enter 2013. NHW is not about being a nosey neighbour and spying on people. It’s about caring about the community you live in, it’s about caring about each other and vitally its about showing the criminals that live amongst us that we will NOT tolerate their behaviour. Finally I would also like your help with one other subject that is dear to my heart. As you know I occasionally get annoyed when some of you don’t really help yourselves (cars being left unlocked at night for example). Now I am not any kind of IT expert but I am aware that certain types of mobile phones, laptops and tablets have incorporated ‘Find Me’ applications built within them. Please make sure you turned these applications ON as they can be very helpful in tracking down your property. It does not cost anything and if you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of crime we could find the offender very, very quickly because of these apps. Let’s not give any criminals an unintentional gift this year!
