ANSWER
The summer is finally here and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to spending some much needed time in the sunshine with our friends and families. The kids will need plenty to amuse them over the holidays, and we’ve got numerous ideas for you in our ‘What’s On’ section. The Wimbledon fortnight is sure to have inspired some budding tennis fans to get active, but if you prefer to take a more laid back approach to sports, Primrose Vale invites you to come and pick your own fruit and vegetables. Strawberries – Wimbledon’s favourite – are in season from now until September! With an abundance of other tasty berries, currants and beans, this is a perfect opportunity to encourage children to eat healthily and enjoy the experience of ‘picking and tasting’ from the glorious fields. If you’re having a ‘staycation’ this summer, you can still savour the true flavour of France. On pages 6-7 you can read our review on L’Artisan – a fabulous new restaurant that opened in June where the food, staff and atmosphere are all positively Gallic! The festival season is upon us too with Cheltenham playing host to our first tattoo festival – Tattoo Royale – plus the annual internationally-acclaimed Music Festival and, for sports fans, the Cheltenham Cricket Festival. The popular ‘SportsFest’ that took place in Cheltenham last year to celebrate Gloucestershire sport is this year hosted by the Wall’s Club at Barnwood, Gloucester. Also in Gloucester is the city’s famous Rhythm & Blues festival. Now we know the weather won’t always be kind during the holidays, but it doesn’t mean you can’t keep all the family entertained – Cineworld at The Brewery have a host of fantastic new releases including Monsters University and Despicable Me 2.
Whatever you get up to this summer – have a wonderful time!

Vanilla Pannacotta with Poached Pears Serves 4 ~ Setting time: 4 hours or overnight Ingredients: 250ml/9fl oz whole milk; 4 egg yolks; 75g/21⁄2oz caster sugar; 1 sachet gelatine; 5ml/1tsp vanilla essence; 284ml/1⁄2pt double cream; 3-4 pears; 50g/2oz caster sugar; 1⁄2 small lemon (optional). Method: 1 Place the milk in a saucepan and heat until about to boil. 2 Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy, add the vanilla essence and pour the milk over the eggs, stirring well. Return to the pan and gently heat, stirring continuously until slightly thickened. Cool. 3 Sprinkle the gelatine over 45ml/3tbsp hot water, stir until dissolved. Stand in a pan of hot water to help. 4 Lightly whip the cream. Stir together the custard, gelatine and cream, divide between 4 moulds. Leave to set in the fridge for at least 4 hours or if time overnight.
5 Peel and core the pears. 6 Place the sugar in a saucepan with 125ml/4fl oz water. Bring to the boil for a few minutes, reduce the heat, add the pears and a squeeze of lemon to stop them turning brown. Cover and simmer until softened. 7 Release the pannacottas by dipping in hot water and up-turning. Serve with the pears. Make some meringues with your leftover egg whites!

L’Artisan est Elisabeth and Yves Ogrodzki, originally from the Provence region of France, have recently opened L’Artisan in Clarence Street – a beautiful restaurant serving authentic French food. Elisabeth was attracted here after finding out we have an area called Montpellier – the namesake of where she was brought up in France. Yves first came to England 10 years ago, working with chef Jean-Christophe Novelli in London, then moving on to another head chef role in Rutland before setting up his own pub and restaurant in Thorpe Satchville. After many successful years, Elisabeth and Yves decided it was time for a change and, after a brief spell in Birmingham – which wasn’t for them – the couple visited Cheltenham and fell in love with our town.
‘I couldn’t recommend this restaurant highly enough’
with touches of France, the beautifully laid tables to the upholstered chairs. We had chosen our first two courses and, whilst sampling the tasty bread, Philippe brought us an amuse bouche – a little pot of aubergine caviar with
Everything homemade! As well as serving authentic French food, they have French waiters and French chefs working with Yves in the kitchen. Everything is homemade – from the complimentary bread, the tomato and basil butter – they even smoke the salmon themselves. We had the wonderful opportunity of dining at L’Artisan the other evening, and what a treat it was too! After a lovely friendly welcome, we sat and perused their stylish, extensive menu whilst also admiring the warm décor
carrot strips and a galette slice. I would never have chosen this if I had seen it on the menu, but it was delicious and had a little ‘kick’ to it. Our starters arrived and – wow – did they look stunning. Yves believes that a plate of food should be a work of art. He says it must appeal to the eyes and nose as well as the taste buds. Just look at our photos! I had Asparagus and Home Smoked Salmon Gateau on a Blinis with Asparagus Coulis and my husband had a Crispy Purse with Morteau Sausage and Camembert. This was followed by Braised Lamb Henri slowly cooked with a Rosemary
Sauce for me, and Pan Fried Pork Fillet with Apple and a Brittany Cider Creamy Sauce for my husband. Again, we were taken aback by the beautiful presentation. You weren’t just served a dish of vegetables, oh no. Each type of vegetable was lovingly created in its own right – a crispy basket filled with ratatouille, dauphinoise potato, courgette stuffed with sautéed mushrooms, carrot and fresh ginger soufflé, and the simple but sweet sugar snap peas. What a feast! Desserts – yes we had to do it. I had a delightful Lemon Tart with meringue on top and my husband chose the Chocolate Fondant Pudding which, when cut open, oozed a warm chocolate centre into his icecream. Yves had already mentioned earlier that he had some small Crème Brulee’s in the back which he would let me try, so rather than let him down I polished that off too!
Private dining room By this point we were both fit to burst and could not manage a coffee but Yves brought us out a little pot of chocolate ganache with rum and amaretto in – the idea being that you stir your coffee then, with the hot spoon, you dig out this smooth, delightful chocolate experience – much nicer than an after dinner mint!

Magnifique!
The L’Artisan team (from left): Philippe, Yves. Elisabeth and Sebastian
Elisabeth and Yves have used their incredible skills and experience to deliver a perfect dining experience. And, what’s more, if you’re one of the many who associates ‘French cuisine’ with the word ‘expensive’, then think again – L’Artisan represents exceptional value for money. The restaurant also boasts a first floor private dining room catering for up to 50 people. It’s another beautiful
environment, suitable for all manner of celebrations and gatherings. I do hope I’ve managed to tempt you to try this restaurant out for yourselves – I couldn’t recommend it highly enough, and I’m certain many of you will join us in hoping that Elisabeth and Yves make Cheltenham their home for many years to come. L’Artisan was absolutely magnificent, or should I say magnifique!

As I was walking my two dogs around the racecourse today I noted the rapidly drying grass seeds on the long grass and I knew it wouldn’t be long before the first dog arrived with a swollen foot or sore ear. Every Summer, hundreds of dogs are bothered by these innocuous looking things but their fine tips and feathered ends seem to make them perfectly designed to puncture the skin or disappear down ears. Occasionally they can even be snorted up a sniffing nostril or more rarely inhaled into an airway. The dogs that are most bothered are certainly the longer haired breeds, the Spaniels being the most commonly afflicted. Their long fur between their toes or shaggy ears seem to catch up the seeds with monotonous regularity. The classic scenario is a soft painful swelling between the toes – which is an abscess around a grass seed. Or the head held painfully on one side because one or more grass seeds have disappeared down an ear canal. Ultimately both situations result in minor veterinary procedures to either lance the abscess and remove the offending seed or delicately remove them from the lower ear canal before they damage the ear drum.
What can you do? CHARLTON KINGS VET CENTRE OPEN MONDAY-FRIDAY 9AM-6.30PM DRAGON VET CENTRE OPEN SATURDAY 9AM-12 NOON 24 HOUR EMERGENCY ~ 01242 522022 Charlton Kings Vet Centre in affiliation with
There are some simple things that pet owners can do though to reduce the risk of grass seeds and vet visits. If you have a long haired dog keeping their fur short in Summer especially their feet or ear areas can make a big difference. Avoiding fields and areas where the grass seeds are particularly prevalent is not a bad idea, and simply being diligent after walks to check toes and fur for seeds and look out for the signs of a problem. The dog that is suddenly bothering it’s ear, chewing it’s foot or repeatedly sneezing is a sign that shouldn’t be ignored. With a bit of luck in a few months they’ll all be gone! Moorcroft vase sells for £6,500 for local charity Mallams have sold in excess of £600,000 worth of Chinese and British works of art at their Grosvenor Street salerooms in Cheltenham over the last five weeks. As part of three centrally placed auction rooms, genuinely specializing in certain key areas, they are ideally placed to realise the top price for the local vendors. A number of pieces have been identified and sold as a result of Mallams’ open Tuesday morning valuation days. Two examples are the Moorcroft ‘Hazeldene’ vase brought in by a local charity which realised £6,500 in the Design sale on 22nd May and the large Victorian silver lidded jug, which sold for £5,500 at their 6th June auction. If you have any items you would like Mallams to view and value, call them direct on 01242 235712 to arrange an appointment, or just call in to Grosvenor Galleries (see below) on a Tuesday morning between 9am-1pm.

do you want to host an international student?
William IV

(The Sailor King)
Tucked away in a rather remote area in one of Cheltenhamʼs many parks, stands an imposing statue to one of Great Britainʼs more colourful monarchs. William IV – The Sailor King – who had a private dwelling in Royal Crescent (where it is said that he entertained one of his mistresses), never expected to become King, and only did so because his two elder brothers died without legitimate heirs, before either could ascend the throne. The son of George III, William was born in 1765 and followed a career in the Royal Navy, becoming a Midshipman at the age of fourteen. He saw action at the Battle of Cape William IV Vincent, against the 1765-1837 Spanish fleet, in 1780 after which one of the captured vessels (the Guipuzcoana) was renamed Prince William in his honour. He later served with Admiral Nelson in the West Indies. William became King on the 26th June 1830 at the age of 64. He also became Elector (King) of Hanover, although he never visited his continental kingdom. He had been in a long-term relationship with the Irish actress Dorothea Bland, otherwise known under the stage name of Mrs Jordan, and had fathered ten children. A great many people alive today claim descendency from William, including the Prime Minister, David Cameron. During his reign the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire took place, and a Parliamentary Bill ensuring Catholic emancipation became law. Although William had subsequently married, producing two female children, neither survived to be in line to ascend the throne. Instead, upon his death in June 1837, his niece Victoria became Monarch at the age of eighteen. The statue of King William – a rarity because he is depicted wearing the robes and insignia of the Order of the Garter – can be seen on a high plinth at the end of Central Walk in Montpellier Gardens, to which spot it was moved (from Imperial Gardens) in 1920. He was the last of the Hanovarian monarchs, but probably not the last King of Great Britain to bear that name. In direct line to the throne is, of course, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge who will ultimately bear the title King William V. Page 14

Indulge in some ‘me time’! Gary Bullock, owner of Gorgeous-hair, invited us to send someone along to experience the service he and his team deliver. Jane Hosey was our representative, and here’s what she has to say: “When I was asked if I would be willing to do a review of Gorgeous-hair I jumped at the chance. Being a working mum, and having to run a very busy household, I was in desperate need of a bit of ‘me time’ and this was the perfect opportunity. “On entering the salon, which is based in the Suffolks – ‘Cheltenham’s Notting Hill’ – I was greeted by salon owner Gary, my jacket was taken and I took a seat on the comfy sofas to browse the drinks menu. With freshly ground latte ordered – although next time I think I will be selecting a glass of wine – I was gowned and led to the beautifully lit styling station. “Geraldine Worgan, one of the senior stylists who I had selected to do my highlights and cut, gave me a detailed consultation – discussing skin tone and the colours that would suit me. She also took the time to discuss my lifestyle and hair maintenance routine so that she could tailor a look especially for me. “I was then taken to the basins to have my hair washed and, to my surprise, got to enjoy a luxurious massage in their Shiatsu massage chair at the same time – this was truly indulgent! “I then returned to the lovely Geraldine, ready for her to make me feel absolutely gorgeous! It took almost 3 hours for Geraldine to complete her creation, although with the friendly chatter between all the staff and their clients the time seemed to fly by. “Once finished she talked me through the products on offer to help my look stay fresh between cuts – you can even order extra products from their website – which is perfect for someone that doesn’t always have the time to pop into town! “With the wonderful team that Gary has brought together, the soothing music playing in the background and the contemporary yet elegant feel to the salon, there is a wonderful ambience at Gorgeous-hair. I thoroughly recommend the experience and, although slightly off the beaten track, Gorgeous-hair is definitely worth a visit. Which leaves me to say a big ‘thank you‘ to Gary, Geraldine and the rest of the team for giving one very busy mum a much-needed, indulgent and relaxing afternoon!”

Jowl Lif t Studio 19 is the first clinic in Gloucestershire to offer the amazing CACI Jowl Lift treatment, with a new specially-developed muscle-toning device to target the jawline area. As we age the skin becomes looser and can start to sag. One of the areas where this is most pronounced is the jawline, where ‘jowls’ can hang giving a loose appearance to the jaw area. Until now treatments to rejuvenate the jawline have been limited in effectiveness, with surgery being the last resort. The treatment lifts, firms and redefines contours and used in conjunction with a special skin firming serum, will enhance the overall effect. The treatment is an excellent compliment to botox and fillers. as it tackles the lower face and neck area but equally suits clients who are keen to pursue a needle free answer to younger skin.

Cheltenham plays
Cheltenham Music Festival promises a feast of unique and outstanding concerts from some of the world’s finest musicians this July. The twelve day programme features Cheltenham’s world-renowned mix of world premieres and one-off collaborations, all hosted in some of the country’s most beautiful venues. Festival Director Meurig Bowen said: “Cheltenham is a perfect festival town. Alongside all the wonderful architecture, hotels, restaurants and widely-celebrated shopping, this beautiful Regency spa town in the Cotswolds boasts a range of ideal buildings to experience classical music in.
From Beethoven to illustrated family concerts “The 1825 Pittville Pump Room is one of the most celebrated and beloved spaces, by audiences and musicians alike, for intimate chamber performances. There’s the elegant Edwardian Town Hall for larger scale orchestral concerts, state-of-the-art theatres and stunning buildings such as Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral nearby.” Highlights of Cheltenham Music Festival’s eclectic programme range from a performance of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky by Classical Brit Award winner Nicola Benedetti and her trio, to a series of illustrated family concerts led by
Festival Guest Director and talented children’s author and illustrator James Mayhew. For 2013, Cheltenham Music Festival also has an impressive fifteen premieres by composers such as Michael Zev Gordon, Roxanna Panufnik and Gabriel Jackson. It will also celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with a number of Britten concerts, including a spectacular production of Noye’s Fludde in Tewkesbury Abbey. Noye’s Fludde is a children’s opera that tells the story of Noah’s flood. Interestingly, the magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey is itself no stranger to floodwaters. Tewkesbury became famous in 2007 when terrible floods swept over the town, while the Abbey, standing aloft like a great ark, was spared. This production will feature 200 local school children and stunning set design by James. He said: “I relish the idea of a collaborative project like this – it is excitingly distant from the isolated existence of a writer and illustrator. Music has always brought such joy into my world. Music has always told me stories and conjured pictures, even as a child. I hope to come up with something striking and appropriate.” James also has some very personal connections to Britten’s work. He went to the Benjamin Britten High School in Lowestoft, his Grandfather lived next door to Britten and his Grandmother knew “Benjy” from her Sunday school.
host to world class musicians Wednesday 3rd to Sunday 14th July 2013
Britten even wrote music for a play she performed in and she considered herself to be Britten’s ‘first leading lady’. James will also feature in a series of family focussed concerts including a special illustrated interpretation of Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet and a Young Person’s Painted Guide to the Orchestra, in accompaniment to Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra musical performance of Britten’s popular classic. Other Britten highlights include Christianne Stotijn’s premiere performance of a mezzo-soprano version of Winter Words; chamber works performed by The Elias, Carducci and Signum Quartets; and a Festival Finale featuring Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings performed by City of London Sinfonia and tenor Toby Spence.
‘Music is the real third dimension of movies’ Among many other fantastic concerts, Cheltenham is also hosting a very special evening for film buffs when the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performs a selection of Mark Kermode’s favourite music from the films. Mark will introduce the concert which will reflect his unique and eclectic tastes, including music from Twin Peaks and Mary Poppins in the same evening. Mark Kermode said: “As every film fan knows, music is the real third
dimension of movies, the magical element which draws you into the drama, immerses you in the action and changes the experience from watching a movie to living it. “These concerts are not an attempt to round up the ‘greatest’ screen music by the most celebrated composers. Rather, they are an enthusiastic romp through some very personal choices, blending the well-known with the more esoteric, the acclaimed with the ‘cult.’ We’ve attempted to have fun with the selections – we’re sure the audience will have fun hearing them.’ All the music will be conducted by maestro Robert Ziegler, who has a worldwide reputation as a conductor of film music and has worked regularly in the studio with film composers such as Howard Shore (Hugo, The Hobbit) Patrick Doyle (Hamlet, Sense and Sensibility) and Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, Norwegian Wood). Also joining Kermode will be actor Jim Broadbent who will talk about his own career in the movies, and discuss the film music which has inspired them – a selection of which will be played live by the orchestra. Visit cheltenhamfestivals.com/music for programme updates. To book tickets for this year’s Cheltenham Music Festival call 0844 880 8094 or visit cheltenhamfestivals.com

1968 was the year that changed the world. Around the globe, there were protests, drugs and the shock of a brutal assassination. Indigenous Australians finally secured the right to vote. And there was Vietnam. For four young Aboriginal sisters from a remote mission this is the year that would change their lives forever. The sisters, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave (Chris O’Dowd), a talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. Billed as Australia’s answer to The Supremes, Dave secures the sisters their first true gig, and flies them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops. Based on a true story, The Sapphires is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music. 9.15pm. £6 (£5). 24 JULY THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
Local theatre troupe ‘Rain or Shine’ make a welcome return to the Tuckwell with a revival of their popular production of The Comedy of Errors. Thought to be Shakespeare’s first play, this farcical comedy is a theatrical feast of wit and humour. The master wordsmith makes the most of an unlikely plot, which includes reunions of lost children with parents, husbands with wives, of adventures and wanderings, and the ever present threat of death. When sets of twins come face to face with their mirror images – not once, but twice – the scene is set for a total Comedy of Errors. 7.30pm. £13 (£11). Meals out, cinema, messing about in boats and good old British afternoon tea with lashings of cake guaranteed – for them, anyway. Despicable Me 2 Gru and his minions are recruited to trounce an evil supervillain in this hilarious sequel to the hit animation. Last time we met shiny-domed, pointy-nosed, spindlylegged megalomaniac Gru (Steve Carell), he was tamed by a trio of adorable orphan girls. But Gru’s life of happy domesticity as an adoptive father isn’t going to last. He’s abducted by Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) of the Anti-Villain League and whisked to the organisation’s HQ in her cool underwater car. Here the League’s supremo, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), explains that Gru’s detailed knowledge of the evil mind is needed to help defeat a sinister new supervillain named Eduardo (Al Pacino). What’s more, he’ll get to play with lots of great new gadgets and weapons! Steve Coogan and Al Pacino join the starry voice cast of this sequel to the much-loved 2010 box office smash. Expect to see plenty more of Gru’s scene-stealing little yellow minions too!

Monsters University Much-loved ‘Monsters, Inc’ duo Mike and Sulley scare up a fun-packed prequel to the Pixar hit. We all know about the adventures of odd couple monsters Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. ‘Sulley’ Sullivan (John Goodman) in the human world. But how did green, one-eyed Mike and giant, purple-spotted Sulley get to be such exalted scarers? Now the story is told as those master animators at Pixar whisk us back to Monsters University, where our heroes first meet as unlikely roommates. Uptight Mike is fiercely competitive, while laid-back Sulley contends that, “You don’t need to study scaring – you just do it”. But when their Oozma Kappa fraternity of lovable monster misfits is beaten in the big Scare Games, they have to work together to avoid being kicked out of MU! Our very own Helen Mirren voices the University’s suitably terrifying Dean Hardscrabble in this crazy family adventure with a big heart. 2 AUGUST – Advanced Previews from 31 July
The Smurfs 2 The popular little blue funsters take on the nasty Naughties in this fabulous new adventure. Undaunted by his defeat in the first Smurfs movie, evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is back with a dastardly new plan. This time he’s conjured up two rascally new creatures, aptly called the Naughties. Gargamel hopes that Vexy (Christina Ricci) and Hackus (JB Smoove) will help him to capture the all-powerful Smurf essence. But he soon finds that a spell known only by Smurfette (Katy Perry) can transform the Naughties into real Smurfs. So he kidnaps Smurfette and whisks her to Paris, where Vexy and Hackus set to work on winning her over to the Naughty side! Now Papa (Jonathan Winters), Clumsy (Anton Yelchin), Grouchy (George Lopez) and Vanity (John Oliver) must return to the human world once again. Their mission is to reunite with humans Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace Winslow (Jayma Mays) to win Smurfette back.

In front of thousands of fans, he will be joined by his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra and he’ll also be accompanied by sopranos, tenors and some very special guests. The broadcast will feature an introduction from CinemaLive host Charlotte Hawkins and – exclusively for cinema audiences – she’ll also be conducting an interview with Andre after the concert. “If you can’t come to Maastricht, we’ll come to you,” says Andre himself. “Come and enjoy the music on the big screen in the comfort of your local cinema”. 2013 is shaping up to be Andre’s most spectacular concert year yet – so don’t miss out!

The World’s End The gang behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz reunite for the final entry in their hilarious ‘Three Flavours Cornetto’ trilogy! When they were younger, an intrepid group of friends attempted a pub-crawl to end them all. Twenty years later, Gary King (Pegg) reunites the group in an attempt to stage the same drinking marathon again. The goal, as before, is to reach the fabled pub The World’s End. But soon the hard-drinking mates are unexpectedly plunged into a fight for the survival of all mankind! The World’s End is the latest collaboration between director Edgar Wright, screenwriter/star Simon Pegg and costar Nick Frost following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Now it’s time for last orders as their hit film trilogy comes to a close. Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan co-star in what promises to be another effortless laugh-riot from the ‘fried gold’ comedy team! 25 JULY
The Wolverine Hugh Jackman returns to slice and dice the blockbuster competition as the iconic, adamantium-clawed superhero! Some time after the events of X Men: The Last Stand, Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is at his lowest point. All the connections that he held dear have been shattered – leaving him vulnerable and aimless. He’s then contacted by a mysterious young woman who brings him to Japan at the behest of a figure from his past. It’s here that Logan faces his greatest challenge yet – a test of his physical and emotional capabilities, during which he must learn to control the rage that drives him. Based on the hugely popular samurai character Arc in the 1982 Marvel comicbook series Wolverine, Logan’s journey this time promises to be his most dramatic and spectacular yet. The exotic background of Japan lends a mystical quality to the riproaring comic-book action – as the razor-clawed hero goes head to head with samurai culture in spectacular fashion!

reat taste of summer at Primrose Vale
The ‘Pick Your Own’ season peaks in July and Primrose Vale has an abundance of delicious berries, currants and beans for all the family to enjoy collecting – a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. You’ll probably end up doing most of the picking yourself, but tasting fruit and veg fresh from the fields is a delightful and positive experience for everyone. Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO has been developed over the years by owners Charlotte and Paul Keene to become a wonderful source of locally grown or reared produce – keeping food miles to a minimum and supporting other nearby farmers simultaneously. There is a large selection of delicious food all year round. There are over a dozen different crops for you to gather and, the most popular fruits with customers at this time of year are strawberries and raspberries. You don’t have to damage your back in the process of picking them – raspberry bushes are tall and the strawberries are now grown on raised platforms, so there’s no slugs, bugs or mud either! To the side of the shop a recreational area has been created for customers to use during opening hours. Whether you need a sit down or your children want to use the sandpit, ride the vintage tractor, play on the swings and slides or see the rabbits, you are encouraged to use the facilities. In fact, Charlotte and Paul are more than happy for you to take your little ones to use the play area, even if you’re not picking or visiting the shop specifically.

So why not let the kids enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise while you relax with a cuppa and, perhaps, a cake or slice – the outdoor cafe opens from 10am-4pm every day during the summer picking season!

In t he G arden
Can it be July already? With such a late spring, time seems to be galloping on. Take the time this month to do a bit of garden visiting – the national garden schemes are a wonderful day out, particularly when a whole village takes part. It is lovely to saunter around someone else’s garden and get ideas on planting partners and hopefully a lovely bit of homemade cake! Check on www.ngs.org.uk to see where is available in the local area. Prune early summer flowering shrubs now they have finished flowering. Things like Philadelphus, Deutzia, Weigela and Physocarpus. In the case of large shrubs, remove the old flowered stems down to a point where there is a strong new shoot, and then remove a quarter of stems right down to the base. Smaller shrubs can be treated more gently, but still remove weak and spindly growth. Feed with a granular feed like Gromore after pruning, water well and mulch with some compost. This will give a good start to produce some new flowering shoots to mature for next summer. If you have grown early potatoes they should be ready to lift now. Keep sowing ‘cut and come again’ varieties of lettuce in small batches in old mushroom boxes, etc. They need to be placed out of the hot sun and kept moist, but not soaking. These can be kept by the kitchen door and snipped at for sandwich fillings and salad bowls. Do the same with peas as pea shoots are really tasty in a salad and they grow easily in containers. Try your hand at taking cuttings from perennial herbs like Lavender, Rosemary and Sage – take the cuttings early in the day. Choose non-flowering side-shoots that are soft at the tip and woody at the base about 10cms long. Pull away from the main stem gently leaving a little bit of the bark still attached (these are called ‘heel’ cuttings). Take off the lower 5cm of leaves from the stem, dip the end into hormone rooting powder (garden centres have this) and then insert several of these cuttings into a small pot of gritty compost. Firm them in and water well, then cover the whole pot with a plastic bag (ensuring it doesn’t touch any of the leaves), label and place somewhere warm but out of direct sunlight. The cuttings should have rooted by late August. It is always nice to grow something for nothing, and you could use the plants as presents for family and friends – perhaps presented in old terracotta plant pots.

Propert y News Prevention is better than cure Nick Ellicott of Aspray advises on some simple tasks to help prevent disasters happening and secure your home from the worst of the weather: ROOF – Make a visible check of your roof to ensure there are no slipped tiles. High winds can blow the tiles off the roof allowing water entry, and damage to whatever they hit. GUTTERS & PIPES – clogged drains and silted gutters can cause water to enter the roof space, damaging ceilings and walls. Make sure your outside tap is turned off and drained in cold weather. DRAINS – clear leaves from drains. If water cannot escape in can cause flooding. WALLS – make sure your damp proof course is not bridged by debris, and that any small trees which could break a window in high winds are pruned. SECURITY – check that security lights and their sensors are working properly. Clean spider webs and dirt from the face of the sensor. GARAGE/SHED – make sure the locks on your garden shed are in good working condition, and that hinges are oiled. If they have a flat roof, you may wish to ask someone capable to check its felted surface for damage and or leaks. WATER – check your stop cock. It may be under the kitchen sink, utility room, or under the stairs. Check the insulation of the pipes and tank in your roof space. A cold snap can cause frost damage to pipes and tanks. Get your central heating boiler serviced regularly. ELECTRIC/GAS – check plugs and sockets for cracks and damage. Have them replaced if necessary. Check your fuse box/breaker box. Make sure that you have spare fuses to hand, and know how to reset breaker switches. Alarms – check smoke alarms are working regularly – if you do not have one, get one fitted upstairs as well as down. If you have a burglar alarm, have it serviced. INSURANCE – make sure you are properly covered and any valuables or additions (eg new conservatory) are included on the policy. Does the value of your insurance adequately cover the cost of replacing your home and its contents? Most of these tasks require a minimum of skill and knowledge, and can be done now while the weather is pleasant rather than when they have to be done in the depths of winter. Please ensure that you consider the risks before attempting any home maintenance. If disaster does happen, why not contact Nick and the Aspray team – they promise to survey any damage within 24 hours ... Property Repair and Insurance Claims Management

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Help with your insurance crisis – no charge, no catch! Few things are as stressful as claiming for accidental repairs to your home and property. When you have a crisis at home, the last thing you need is to spend hours finding reputable builders and getting quotes, and worrying about what happens if there are problems further down the line, especially when speed is of paramount importance – getting everything back to normal as soon as possible. Aspray specialise in arranging for all work necessary in restoring your home to its former glory following an accident. Owner Nick Ellicott is a property professional who lives and works in Gloucestershire and possesses 20 years’ experience in the property industry. The company works ‘hand in hand’ with businesses, homeowners, tenants, landlords, lettings agents and insurance brokers to ensure each claim is dealt with swiftly and efficiently – all at no cost to the customer.* With a huge range of reputable companies on their books to choose from (including female tradeswomen
Nick Ellicott where preferred), Aspray will ‘hand pick’ skilled tradespeople to restore your property, and manage the whole process too – including liaison with insurance companies. You won’t need to complete forms, speak to loss adjustors or obtain quotes!
*This service is completely free to you. Aspray’s team of professionals will take care of everything on your behalf – including arranging payment with the insurance company – and the only cost to you will be your insurance excess. So, whatever your crisis – from a collapsed roof or a burst pipe to a car crashed through your garden wall – Aspray offer their service at no charge.* They will work for you – not your insurer – and get out to your property within 48 hours of receiving your call. You will have one point of contact – your claims manager – who will listen closely to what you want and represent you to ensure a successful result. They can even arrange temporary emergency repair at the time of the incident. All repair work will be started as soon as possible after the insurer’s authorisation and is fully guaranteed for 12 months. For more information visit the company’s website: www.aspray.com. *Aspray are paid by the insurance company – not by you. Terms and conditions apply.

When two become one – ending relationships When a relationship ends, it is often a very traumatic time for both parties. There are many emotional issues and details to be resolved, more so the longer the relationship has been. Where relationships have been long-term, especially where the couple have been married or in a civil partnership, and/or there are children, sorting the details out can be more complex. Sorting the finances, leaving the very important issue of children for another time, will be of utmost importance to a couple ending their relationship. If you have not been married or in a civil partnership, the general rule is that each person keeps the assets in their own name and joint assets are divided equally. Where a couple have been married or in a civil partnership, finances are a more complicated matter.
Divorce or Dissolution In respect of a couple ending a marriage (“divorce”) or civil partnership (“dissolution”), a couple may be able to sort the finances themselves, especially if each person is working and assets are relatively simple (perhaps just being the family house, bought together). Where a couple ending their marriage/civil partnership have sorted finances themselves, I think it is still advisable to seek a solicitor’s advice. In such a case, the solicitors (assuming each party instructs a solicitor) should simply provide an overview of the financial agreement made by the couple, to ensure there is not some glaring error/misconception that puts either party at a disadvantage. Assuming all is in order, it is wise to encapsulate the financial agreement in what is termed a “Consent Order”, this being an Order made by the Court. In such a case the Court is simply confirming the agreement made by the couple (the “consent” signifying the couple have agreed the terms of the Order rather than the Court making the Order). Such an Order, can often result in
by Andrew Stokes Consultant
what is known as a “clean break” Order, meaning the financial connections between the parties are fully severed so each party can go forward independently. In many cases of divorce/dissolution, finances will be more complex and a solicitor’s advice and assistance throughout the settlement of financial issues is vital. That does not mean that you will end up in Court fighting like Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. A solicitor will assist you in ensuring that you and your partner achieve a fair and reasonable financial settlement. This could mean that all areas of dispute are resolved between solicitors, perhaps you and your partner are referred to mediation or, in the last resort the matter may need to be referred to the Court.
Reaching a settlement If it is decided that the financial matters need to be referred to the Court, this does not mean you will actually end-up in a Court room fighting over finances and making your solicitors wealthy; often Court proceedings are designed to help move the parties towards a settlement of finances in a reasonable period of time. It may be that where matters cannot be resolved through negotiations between solicitors, that the parties will attend the Court for what is called a Financial Dispute Resolution (“FDR”) appointment with a Judge. The Judge will, in an informal setting and manner, try to assist the parties in reaching a settlement. The Judge may give his or her view as to what settlement
is likely to be ordered by the Court if the matter did go to a final hearing (a formal Court hearing, where a Judge decides how finances will be settled). An FDR, if necessary, is a vital step in the process as it often brings about settlement once the parties hear a Judge give his or her view, such view often “bridging the gap” between the positions of each party.
Have a free chat! So, if your relationship is ending, whether you have simply been in a long-term unmarried relationship, married, or in a civil partnership, finances should be considered carefully and it may be wise to take legal advice to ensure finances are settled in a fair and reasonable manner. We are always pleased to have an initial free (yes, free, meaning you pay us nothing!) chat with you to discuss your situation and give you some guidance. It may be that such a meeting will be the only contact with a solicitor that you require, simply clarifying some issues for you and you can go on your way. Alternatively, it may be seen that there are issues discovered that require expert legal advice and we will be there to assist you in resolving the financial issues, taking you through the process in a professional but compassionate manner. If your relationship is unfortunately ending or perhaps you have simply hit a rocky patch and would like to discuss some issues, please contact us to arrange a meeting (without charge, as we said!). We look forward to hearing from you.

Drive Safely Here at Get Grip the part worn tyres that are chosen to be placed on your car are carefully checked, well before they are brought into the shop. All tyres are pressure tested before they leave the unit to ensure safety and satisfaction. Every tyre that has been selected from stock has been scrutinised and picked by us to give you the best tyres in terms of safety, quality and tread depth. It is true that buying part worn tyres can be a false economy if they’re not priced accordingly or low on tread. Our tyres average 5mm depth of tread, with nothing less than 3mm. If you are unsure on whether your tyres are legal then we are happy to take a look for you and, unlike some companies, we won’t say your tyre is illegal to get a sale! It’s something we are very proud of – we are happy to give good advice and accurate information.
At Get Grip we abide by the Law ... ● The structural integrity must not be compromised. It should
be free of large cuts, any bulges or lumps both internally and externally. No plies or cords should be exposed. ● Tyres must have passed an inflation test prior to sale. ● The original grooves must still be clearly visible in their entirety and must be to a depth of at least 2mm across the full breadth of the tread, around its entire circumference.

Prevention is better than cure When Peter Bayliss of Barker & Bayliss Plumbing & Heating said he wished to promote a special offer for ‘Power Flushing’ on his advertisement this month, I was curious as to exactly why the ‘service’ was necessary, what it involves and what the benefits are – so I asked him. Pete explained: “Radiators rust internally producing a black iron oxide ‘sludge’. The sludge moves around the heating system blocking pipes, valves and boilers. Systems that are 10 years or older benefit greatly from being power flushed and receiving a general overhaul.
More heat, less cost! “Apart from avoiding a potentially much higher cost to repair a damaged boiler, the efficiency of any system is significantly reduced by the sludge contained within it. Our customers end up with a warmer home, improvement in their hot water and lower fuel bills – in some cases nearly 50% lower!” Pete’s colleague Jason Brewer told me about how the service is performed: “We normally set up our ‘JetFlush’ equipment outside and connect it to the customer’s central heating using hoses. The whole system is cleaned without the need to take off all the radiators. “Powerflush cleaner is added to the

system water and starts to loosen the rust. The heating is turned on and radiator surfaces checked for cold spots. By flushing water through individual radiators and vibrating cold spots the sludge is rapidly loosened. The sludge flows from radiators and is collected at our magnet filter. “All radiators and pipe work are flushed until water samples are clean and pH neutral. A corrosion inhibitor is added to the clean water and radiators are balanced as required.” Pete and Jason are Cheltenham ‘born and bred’ and possess decades of experience between them, and the company is fully insured and ‘Gas Safe’ registered. They said the power flushing process takes about a day to be done properly, and prices vary depending on the size of property/system – starting from as little as £300. Summer is the best time for this treatment as it involves customers being without heat and hot water for a day. It’s also sensible to get this ‘preventative

medicine’ actioned ahead of autumn – apart from the peace of mind you’ll enjoy approaching the winter months, you’ll also start to enjoy the financial benefits of a more efficient system. Why not give Barker & Bayliss a call to receive a free ‘no obligation’ quote and, perhaps, take advantage of their ‘Summer Special Offer’?

Balancing the nation’s books
The numbers are so big, they are mind-boggling. Too big for you or I to have any real grasp of. But when all is said and done, managing the countryʼs finances is only the same as we have to do with our household budgets or our companyʼs finances. Just bigger figures. Firstly there is the income side. In many households this is a fixed sum. For the Government it is the amount of tax that they receive. So remember, when you moan about the amount of tax that is deducted from your salary, that this is the finance used by the Government to maintain the public services we all use. Then there is the expenditure side, which has been the coalition governmentʼs principal area of focus since it came to power. We all know that we cannot spend more than we earn, otherwise we quickly go into debt. The problem for the UK government is that it is already deep in debt, to the point that professional credit rating agencies have removed the triple-A (highest level) rating that the UK has enjoyed for decades. The Chancellor has raised the rate of VAT in an attempt to increase the income side, made dramatic cuts to public spending in order to control expenditure, and kept interest rates low in order to make debt as affordable as it can be. But itʼs a long, slow process to make sure that our economy doesnʼt go the same way as some of our European colleagues. Think of him next time you are considering your household budget. And for all of our sakes, pray that he succeeds. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Listening to, and acting on your views Because of all the changes in the last couple of years, I am looking to introduce some new ways of engaging and talking to our community. I have received some observations from the public recently about differing ways that they would like to see their local officers, and I have listened and tried to implement as best we can. We will be having a street surgery every Wednesday in the High Street around lunchtime, when we will have local community officers in attendance and ready for any questions or suggestions about local policing. We will also be taking a ‘road show’ out every other Thursday to various locations around south Cheltenham to meet the public. I will also be returning to the stage with quarterly ‘meet the police’ meetings in different places – similar to the old ‘Police & Community Consultative’ meetings that we used to hold for the Police Authority. We will endeavour to have some guest speakers but, fundamentally, they are for me to give out some statistics and figures, and to be available to anyone with police type questions or suggestions. So, we have listened, are trying to be more available and hope to see you over the next few months. These changes are in addition to the high visible patrols we carry out and in conjunction with the many other responsibilities that we have, but I understand the community want to see more of us and I am attempting to satisfy those wishes. Some of the other duties we deal with have resulted in some good arrests recently. We have had a positive result with one gang of eastern European ATM fraudsters pleading guilty in the Crown Court and, fingers crossed, they will get a hefty custodial sentence – but be aware, there are more out there and they are changing their tactics to distraction type offences in supermarket car parks, so be vigilant when approached by a stranger when you’re shopping. We carried out a series of drugs raids last week culminating in several broken doors and the recovery of decent amounts of crack cocaine and other illegal drugs (I won’t tell you where we found most of it!). And we arrested two miscreants for pinching garden ornaments after some really good police work – so if you are missing your ornamental badger or similar then give us a shout. Tim Waterhouse Keep safe, and Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector keep ’em locked!
