ANSWER

The summer is finally here and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to spending some much needed time in the sunshine with our friends and families. The kids will need plenty of entertaining over the holidays, and we’ve got numberous ideas for you in our ‘What’s On’ section. The Wimbledon fortnight is sure to have inspired some budding tennis fans to get active, but if you prefer to take a more laid back approach to sports, Primrose Vale invites you to come and pick your own fruit and vegetables. Strawberries – Wimbledon’s favourite – are in season from now until September! With an abundance of other tasty berries, currants and beans, this is a perfect opportunity to encourage children to eat healthily and enjoy the experience of ‘picking and tasting’ from the glorious fields. On the 4th July we have ‘Independents’ Day’ where you can go along to celebrate and support Gloucester’s unique blend of independent retailers and take advantage of special deals and offers! When the weather gets warmer it’s sometimes hard to find the motivation to cook, but we have a solution! BiG Eat Week offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to dine out for less every day of the week. Over 20 of the city’s eateries are participating! Finally, in the hope that we do have some lovely sunshine, budding gardeners may want to kit out their garden with some new plants and accessories. What! store provides garden goods from furniture and flowers to compost and barbecue sets, so everyone has the chance to enjoy the summer from the comfort of their own, brilliantly accessorised, garden!

5 Peel and core the pears. 6 Place the sugar in a saucepan with 125ml/4fl oz water. Bring to the boil for a few minutes, reduce the heat, add the pears and a squeeze of lemon to stop them turning brown. Going from good to great for grub in Gloucester

Gloucester often gets criticised – sometimes unfairly in my view – for a lack of quality restaurants. While I agree that we need to improve and broaden our offer, we do have some real hidden gems. In recent months, Iʼve eaten Springbok and Zebra at the Tigerʼs Eye at the Old Bell, taken council colleagues to eat at Café René and dined at Sebz Mediterranean restaurant in Northgate Street. C&W African Experience in St Catherine Street is the top-rated restaurant in the area on TripAdvisor. And weʼve lots of good Indian restaurants including the Hilltop in Worcester Street and Aroma on Southgate Street. I could go on. Phase Two of the Gloucester Quays development will bring a host of big-name restaurants alongside the new state of the art cinema, which opens in December. Edʼs Diner, Zizzi, Portivo Lounge and Chimichanga are the names already revealed, with more to follow. Some of these will be open in time for the Gloucester Quays Food Festival from 19th-21st July. Nandos at Gloucester Quays, which has proved hugely popular since it opened in 2009, has recently re-opened after a refurbishment in which it doubled in size. The City Council and Marketing Gloucester is promoting the Big Eat Week from 15th-21st July, where locals are encouraged to take advantage of the restaurants we have through discounts and offers. This is part of the Believe in Gloucester campaign – visit http://believeingloucester.com/big-events/big-eat-week/. Iʼm really keen to bring a real destination restaurant to the city. Gino DʼAcampo teased us during his first appearance at the Food Festival that heʼd like to open a restaurant here, and joked at his second outing that his £3 million price tag was putting people off! If we canʼt land this Italian flirt of a celebrity chef, Iʼm sure there are others! The Kings Quarter development also promises to bring a new dining offer to the city centre. So the future looks bright. But letʼs not overlook what we have already – and why not use the Big Eat Week to try out something new?

Join in celebrating your city’s food Part of the Believe in Gloucester campaign, BiG Eat Week provides the opportunity for the city’s food lovers and visitors to dine out for less. Twenty-three city centre eateries are taking part in BiG Eat Week and offering customers exclusive special offers to celebrate food in the city. Gloucester has a proud food history with its world famous cheeses, Severn elvers and succulent Old Spot pork (to name just a few local specialities). Whilst it’s important to buy local, it’s equally important to eat local, underlining the vital relationship between food producers, restaurants and customers in the city. By eating local, diners will also be helping with Gloucester’s economy with recent research showing that for every £1 spent, around 50p-70p of that money circulates back into the local economy. However for the same £1 spent outside of the city or indeed online, only 5p trickles back to the local community.

So put your money where your mouth is, believe in Gloucester and enjoy BiG Eat Week!

reat taste of summer at Primrose Vale

The ‘Pick Your Own’ season peaks in July and Primrose Vale has an abundance of delicious berries, currants and beans for all the family to enjoy collecting – a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. You’ll probably end up doing most of the picking yourself, but tasting fruit and veg fresh from the fields is a delightful and positive experience for everyone. Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO has been developed over the years by owners Charlotte and Paul Keene to become a wonderful source of locally grown or reared produce – keeping food miles to a minimum and supporting other nearby farmers simultaneously. There is a large selection of delicious food all year round. There are over a dozen different crops for you to gather and, the most popular fruits with customers at this time of year are strawberries and raspberries. You don’t have to damage your back in the process of picking them – raspberry bushes are tall and the strawberries are now grown on raised platforms, so there’s no slugs, bugs or mud either! To the side of the shop a recreational area has been created for customers to use during opening hours. Whether you need a sit down or your children want to use the sandpit, ride the vintage tractor, play on the swings and slides or see the rabbits, you are encouraged to use the facilities. In fact, Charlotte and Paul are more than happy for you to take your little ones to use the play area, even if you’re not picking or visiting the shop specifically.

The Local Answer

Walking on history? By Barrie Glover of Longlevens

Have you thought that whenever we step out of our home we are almost certain to be literally walking on history? Most local people are surely aware of the admirable Civic Trust guides that show tourists and residents around the city for a small fee, but thatʼs really only the tip of an iceberg. Safely stored away in the City Museum (pictured above) are the results of most of the excavations and accidental unearthings of truly local doings, frequently very ancient. Two examples from the Longlevens area provide the flavour of them. When drains and cables were being inspected at 55 Little Normans (off Innsworth Lane), and also at Brionne Way, Church Road and Lea Crescent, traces of undated ditches and medieval furrow cultivation were found. In Wellsprings Road a Lower Palaeothic hand axe was found, which would have been deposited there by a glacier. It is a very important find. In 1974 Roman and pre-historic pottery together with Roman tegulae were seen in the plough soil at what was Squires Gate, now more familiarly known as Longlevens Crossroads – which suggests ʻancientsʼ nearby. So keep your eyes open as you go around, and give the City Museum a buzz if you spot anything unusual coming out of the ground (01452 396131).

Barry submitted the above article, asking if weʼd be prepared to publish his information which was written with the consent of David Rice – the expert on all things ancient at the Gloucester City Museum. He acknowledged it only refers to a small part of Gloucester, but thought it would be of interest to fellow readers of The Local Answer and, perhaps, encourage others to send us articles about their own localities. We certainly hope it does!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Nick Ellicott of Aspray advises on some simple tasks to help prevent disasters happening and secure your home from the worst of the weather: ROOF – Make a visible check of your roof to ensure there are no slipped tiles. High winds can blow the tiles off the roof allowing water entry, and damage to whatever they hit. GUTTERS & PIPES – clogged drains and silted gutters can cause water to enter the roof space, damaging ceilings and walls. Make sure your outside tap is turned off and drained in cold weather. DRAINS – clear leaves from drains. If water cannot escape in can cause flooding. WALLS – make sure your damp proof course is not bridged by debris, and that any small trees which could break a window in high winds are pruned. SECURITY – check that security lights and their sensors are working properly. Clean spider webs and dirt from the face of the sensor. GARAGE/SHED – make sure the locks on your garden shed are in good working condition, and that hinges are oiled. If they have a flat roof, you may wish to ask someone capable to check its felted surface for damage and or leaks. WATER – check your stop cock. It may be under the kitchen sink, utility room, or under the stairs. Check the insulation of the pipes and tank in your roof space. A cold snap can cause frost damage to pipes and tanks. Get your central heating boiler serviced regularly. ELECTRIC/GAS – check plugs and sockets for cracks and damage. Have them replaced if necessary. Check your fuse box/breaker box. Make sure that you have spare fuses to hand, and know how to reset breaker switches. Alarms – check smoke alarms are working regularly – if you do not have one, get one fitted upstairs as well as down. If you have a burglar alarm, have it serviced. INSURANCE – make sure you are properly covered and any valuables or additions (eg new conservatory) are included on the policy. Does the value of your insurance adequately cover the cost of replacing your home and its contents? Most of these tasks require a minimum of skill and knowledge, and can be done now while the weather is pleasant rather than when they have to be done in the depths of winter. Please ensure that you consider the risks before attempting any home maintenance. If disaster does happen, why not contact Nick and the Aspray team – they promise to survey any damage within 24 hours ... Property Repair and Insurance Claims Management

Can it be July already? With such a late spring, time seems to be galloping on. Take the time this month to do a bit of garden visiting – the national garden schemes are a wonderful day out, particularly when a whole village takes part. It is lovely to saunter around someone else’s garden and get ideas on planting partners and hopefully a lovely bit of homemade cake! Check on www.ngs.org.uk to see where is available in the local area. Prune early summer flowering shrubs now they have finished flowering. Things like Philadelphus, Deutzia, Weigela and Physocarpus. In the case of large shrubs, remove the old flowered stems down to a point where there is a strong new shoot, and then remove a quarter of stems right down to the base. Smaller shrubs can be treated more gently, but still remove weak and spindly growth. Feed with a granular feed like Gromore after pruning, water well and mulch with some compost. This will give a good start to produce some new flowering shoots to mature for next summer. If you have grown early potatoes they should be ready to lift now. Keep sowing ‘cut and come again’ varieties of lettuce in small batches in old mushroom boxes, etc. They need to be placed out of the hot sun and kept moist, but not soaking. These can be kept by the kitchen door and snipped at for sandwich fillings and salad bowls. Do the same with peas as pea shoots are really tasty in a salad and they grow easily in containers. Try your hand at taking cuttings from perennial herbs like Lavender, Rosemary and Sage – take the cuttings early in the day. Choose non-flowering side-shoots that are soft at the tip and woody at the base about 10cms long. Pull away from the main stem gently leaving a little bit of the bark still attached (these are called ‘heel’ cuttings). Take off the lower 5cm of leaves from the stem, dip the end into hormone rooting powder (garden centres have this) and then insert several of these cuttings into a small pot of gritty compost. Firm them in and water well, then cover the whole pot with a plastic bag (ensuring it doesn’t touch any of the leaves), label and place somewhere warm but out of direct sunlight. The cuttings should have rooted by late August. It is always nice to grow something for nothing, and you could use the plants as presents for family and friends – perhaps presented in old terracotta plant pots.

Help with your insurance crisis – no charge, no catch! Few things are as stressful as claiming for accidental repairs to your home and property. When you have a crisis at home, the last thing you need is to spend hours finding reputable builders and getting quotes, and worrying about what happens if there are problems further down the line, especially when speed is of paramount importance – getting everything back to normal as soon as possible. Aspray specialise in arranging for all work necessary in restoring your home to its former glory following an accident. Owner Nick Ellicott is a property professional who lives and works in Gloucestershire and possesses 20 years’ experience in the property industry. The company works ‘hand in hand’ with businesses, homeowners, tenants, landlords, lettings agents and insurance brokers to ensure each claim is dealt with swiftly and efficiently – all at no cost to the customer.* With a huge range of reputable companies on their books to choose from (including female tradeswomen

Nick Ellicott where preferred), Aspray will ‘hand pick’ skilled tradespeople to restore your property, and manage the whole process too – including liaison with insurance companies. You won’t need to complete forms, speak to loss adjustors or obtain quotes!

*This service is completely free to you. Aspray’s team of professionals will take care of everything on your behalf – including arranging payment with the insurance company – and the only cost to you will be your insurance excess. So, whatever your crisis – from a collapsed roof or a burst pipe to a car crashed through your garden wall – Aspray offer their service at no charge.* They will work for you – not your insurer – and get out to your property within 48 hours of receiving your call. You will have one point of contact – your claims manager – who will listen closely to what you want and represent you to ensure a successful result. They can even arrange temporary emergency repair at the time of the incident. All repair work will be started as soon as possible after the insurer’s authorisation and is fully guaranteed for 12 months. For more information visit the company’s website: www.aspray.com. *Aspray are paid by the insurance company – not by you. Terms and conditions apply.

Balancing the nation’s books

The numbers are so big, they are mind-boggling. Too big for you or I to have any real grasp of. But when all is said and done, managing the countryʼs finances is only the same as we have to do with our household budgets or our companyʼs finances. Just bigger figures. Firstly there is the income side. In many households this is a fixed sum. For the Government it is the amount of tax that they receive. So remember, when you moan about the amount of tax that is deducted from your salary, that this is the finance used by the Government to maintain the public services we all use. Then there is the expenditure side, which has been the coalition governmentʼs principal area of focus since it came to power. We all know that we cannot spend more than we earn, otherwise we quickly go into debt. The problem for the UK government is that it is already deep in debt, to the point that professional credit rating agencies have removed the triple-A (highest level) rating that the UK has enjoyed for decades. The Chancellor has raised the rate of VAT in an attempt to increase the income side, made dramatic cuts to public spending in order to control expenditure, and kept interest rates low in order to make debt as affordable as it can be. But itʼs a long, slow process to make sure that our economy doesnʼt go the same way as some of our European colleagues. Think of him next time you are considering your household budget. And for all of our sakes, pray that he succeeds. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

Hello everyone, I hope you’re well and enjoying the summer sun, I say optimistically! Each season brings with it different trends in crime and anti-social behaviour, and this month I’d like to focus on one issue that tends to get worse with the hot weather – the anti-social use of off-road bikes and mini-motos. Young people behaving anti-socially on these type of bikes is something that happens across the city, but the Barton and Tredworth area has been particularly badly affected recently. On one Saturday in June alone there were reports of young people riding trials bikes and ‘terrorising’ dog walkers on a field just off Bishopstone Road, a moped rider performing wheelies on Beaufort Road and motorbikes being raced at the Madleaze Industrial Park. In all of these examples a lot of alarm and distress has been caused. So the question is, how do we tackle it? A major part of the police’s job, quite obviously, is enforcement – and to that end we do warn people, seize and even crush bikes where they are unsuitable for the road or uninsured. We have taken people to court if appropriate too and will continue to do so. The other part of our job is prevention, which is why the local policing team has approached the issue from another perspective and come up with a clever way of giving young people an outlet for this pastime. They are seeking to provide a cordoned off area where mini-motos can be driven in a safe and supervised environment without causing inconvenience to residents. An area at the Peel Centre car park in the city has provisionally been identified as a location for the project, and now officers are seeking to find and train marshals to ACU approved standards to supervise the riding. A similar project in Cheltenham has worked really well and helped foster good relations between the police and young people who are often hard to reach. I’m sure we could achieve something like that here, and that is why I am asking for your support. The local policing team is urging anyone with an interest in the project, who may wish to become involved as a marshall or in some other way, to contact mark.jones@gloucestershire.police.uk. Funding for the project is still not secured, although some money has been made available by Project Solace and Safer Gloucester, but we believe this project could really work and are very interested to hear the community’s views and suggestions on it. As ever, you can give us your feedback via the ‘contact us’ page on the local policing team Neil Smith pages of www.gloucestershire.police.uk. Gloucester Inspector
