Our front cover features former Bath, England and British Lions prop forward Gareth Chilcott who recently moved his ‘sports tours’ company, Venatour, to offices at Gloucestershire Airport, Staverton. While they specialise in rugby, cricket and golf events, they can help with all your travel, accommodation and ticket needs for a wide variety of events – see centre pages. On page 6, council leader Paul James is delighted to report on Gloucester’s successful bid to be a ‘Host City’ for the Rugby World Cup 2015. Numerous people and organisations were involved in the process, so well done to all of you who played a part in putting Kingsholm and Gloucester on the world stage. On the subject of Kingsholm, some tickets are still available (if you’re quick) for the McFly and Ronan Keating concerts on 13th & 14th June respectively. There’s two tickets for the McFly gig up for grabs in Gloucester Rugby’s competition – see page 17. If you prefer music from the 80s, Rick Astley, Tony Hadley and Go West are performing at Eastnor Castle in July – or there’s a whole weekend of entertainment at the Linton Festival, featuring 16 current international and UK artists. We’ve got tickets to be won for these events too! For the little ones, why not take a trip to Prinknash Bird & Deer Park to see their new arrivals? As well as being able to meet all the usual tame and friendly characters, the new feathered arrivals from Slimbridge are joined by two adorable kids – young Pygmy Goats ‘Dolly’ and ‘Snow Flake’ – see page 18.

Gloucester to host World Cup rugby
Itʼs not often that news is greeted with a universally positive response, but thatʼs what seems to have happened following the announcement that Gloucester will be a ʻHost Cityʼ for the Rugby World Cup 2015. The Kingsholm Stadium will be home to four matches, with teams including Scotland, Tonga, Argentina and America on view. The announcement came after a year of work between the City Council and Gloucester Rugby, with help from many external partners. It all started with a phone call to me from former Gloucester Rugby MD Ken Nottage and continued with support from his successors Chris Ferguson and Stephen Vaughan. The Rugby World Cup is the third biggest global sporting event and has a worldwide audience of over 4.2 billion people. To be part of such an occasion is a great opportunity for the city and gives us a real chance to put Gloucester well and truly on the map. Being a Host City isnʼt just about playing a few matches at Kingsholm. We are required to create a “fanzone” – with a big screen where people can watch the matches (not just those being played in Gloucester). We will be dressing the city with banners and the like, and putting on some events, so people here will know there really is something special going on. Kingsholm and Exeterʼs Sandy Park ground were the only club rugby stadia to make it to the final list – something we should be very proud of. As well as the strong partnership between the City Council and the Rugby Club, the passionate support from Gloucester fans undoubtedly played a part in the success of the bid, as did letters from players past and present like Mike Tindall, Mike Teague and Phil Vickery, the supportersʼ organisation KSM, Lord Lieutenant Janet Trotter, City MP Richard Graham and many others. Iʼm keen that the whole city should feel involved in this event, that there should be a real legacy from it and that we maximise the benefits for the people and businesses of Gloucester. A lot of hard work lies ahead to deliver this event successfully, but Iʼm confident we can and will – and, like many people in the city, Iʼm very excited about it!

It can affect anyone! In the UK, breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer. Each day around 130 women are diagnosed. Almost everybody has been touched by breast cancer in some way - a friend, colleague, family member or maybe you. And it's not just females; men are being diagnosed as well. Your donations go towards screening and diagnosis of many forms of cancer, treatments such a mammograms, ultrasound and biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiotherapy, biological therapy, research, and clinical trials, all require funding. But after care treatment is equally as important, managing after surgery, coping with menopausal symptoms, and breast cancer in pregnancy. Itʼs not just the patient that requires support, cancer affects the whole family and close friends

Famous Face
Gareth Chilcott Known to his friends as ‘Cooch’ – Gareth Chilcott is recognised in sporting circles across the globe – like so many of his contemporaries, a true character from the world of rugby. Born in Bristol and a former pupil of Ashton Park School, the 56-year-old has continued his involvement in sport since hanging his boots up some 20 years ago. His career in the ‘sports tours’ industry has resulted in personal experience and expertise that most would struggle to rival today, and it’s this knowledge and prowess that’s enabled him to recently start his own travel company – Venatour – specialising in major cricket and golf events as well as rugby (see right). At the core of his sporting and business success is his competitive nature. He played 363 games at prop, scoring 66 points, in an illustrious playing career with Bath. During this period ‘Cooch’ also won 14 caps for England, starting with his debut in 1984 against Australia. He locked horns with the Aussies again in 1989 while representing the British and Irish Lions down under. Much to the upset of many of us Gloucester fans, Gareth epitomised the winning mentality of, arguably, Bath rugby’s finest era to date. But, when the final whistle sounded, it was his affable character that endeared him to even the most ardent Cherry & Whites supporters. In fact, Gloucester Rugby benefited greatly from Gareth’s Kingsholm involvement during a 5-year commercial tenure. Cooch is an active Honorary President of the rugby charity Wooden Spoon, improving the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in Britain and Ireland, and an ambassador for SOS/iRB Kit Aid – a “green” rugby project that gives less-advantaged children around the world a chance to play and develop rugby in emerging nations through the collection and distribution of unused/unwanted recycled rugby kit from the UK and Ireland (www.sosirbkitaid.org), He is also a renowned ‘dinner speaker’, and had a brief time as an actor in the revived stage play Up ‘n’ Under which was set around a rugby league sevens tournament. His love of sport extends to football – he’s a keen Bristol City supporter and goes to many home and away games. If you’ve got absolutely no interest in sport and have managed to read this far, it may be due to recognising Gareth from a different sort of TV appearance. Originally shown in September 2011, a re-run of a rugby special episode of ‘Come Dine with Me’ saw Cooch enjoying food, drink and banter with Martin Offiah, Victor Ubogu and Kyran Bracken. Mirrored from his playing days, Gareth’s attitude of ‘doing the job right’ and then ‘having fun’ dictates he and his team at Venatour will be doing more than organising your travel, hotels and tickets for you – they’ll ensure your trips are full of wonderful memories to last a lifetime!
Ideal for loves spo Venatour is a new and individual sports tour company offering competitively priced holidays – providing escorted tours to select sporting events globally. The company commenced trading in 2012 from its Bristol office but last month moved to new premises on Staverton’s Gloucestershire Airport site. Managing director Gareth Chilcott explained: “Most of the team live in the Gloucester and Cheltenham areas, so it made sense to relocate.”
‘The personal touch’ Gareth leads a team that are passionate about delivering the very best to their customers. He said: “With an unbeatable, personalised touring experience, we aim to create and deliver selective but unique tours that include the personal touch for our clients. Headed by proficient tour operators and sporting personalities, we offer wellconstructed itineraries with the quality of the ‘Tour Experience’ being our main focus.” Venatour can offer packages to all sports events but specialise is rugby, cricket and golf. As well as the major events such as the Lions tour, the Rugby World Cup and Ashes, Venatour also has an extensive range of affordable RBS Six Nations packages, school and club playing tours – both within the UK and worldwide – and has access to a wide variety of corporate hospitality events and after dinner speakers. Recent

anyone who ort and travel ‘Authentic tour packages that live long in the memory’ releases include trips to Rome, Paris and Edinburgh for England’s away Six Nations matches early next year, and a tour to Dublin for the Ireland v Wales match. For the main rugby events, Venatour’s ambassadors are legends Jason Leonard and Shane Williams. Official Ryder Cup golf packages are also on sale with two options: a five night ‘Ryder Cup Experience’, or the ‘Ultimate Ryder Cup Tour’ – taking in the event as well as playing some of golf’s most famous courses, including Turnberry, Troon, Carnoustie, Muirfield and, of course, St Andrews.
Appetising Ashes For cricket lovers there’s the appetising ‘Ashes Tour to Australia 2013/14’ with Venatour’s cricket ambassadors Simon Jones and Adam Hollioake – it promises to be a fantastic series as the rivalry will be incredibly intense with the two nations having battled for the coveted bragging rights just months earlier (England host Australia this summer). The Venatour team will be focusing on their core business, providing Group and Bespoke Sports Tours to worldwide events, as well as specific ‘tailor made’ trips for individuals and parties to other events of their choice. Whatever your sporting and travel needs, Venatour are sure they can provide something distinct, personalised and within budget to all your favourite events.

I have always had a love for travelling and Having worked for a large sports travel ‘exploring, and I joined Venatour after 9 ‘company for 6 years in the schools and years with Gullivers Sports Travel. I played rugby at university and worked for a time at Gloucester Rugby Club, so I have a strong interest in the game – enjoying working on various events, including 3 Rugby World Cups and 2 Lions tours. I’ve also been involved in many cricket tours, visiting some great destinations over the years – my favourites are New Zealand, South Africa, the Caribbean and Hong Kong. I’m from a sporty family and played a number of sports at a competitive level, including netball, hockey, rugby and horse riding. My main sport now is rowing and I enjoy being out on the water at Evesham and getting involved at competitions.

clubs division, I decided to make the break away to work with Cooch as I saw such potential in Venatour. I am privileged to be working in a job I love. Rugby, cricket and golf play a big part in my life – whether playing or supporting – and to be able to have a job in which I can enjoy these sports whilst I work is something I am very grateful for. Large companies can sometimes lose sight of the core values that make the real difference to supporters and clients, so it is our mission here at Venatour to offer the high quality, personal service to produce real, authentic tour packages that live long in the memory for all our clients.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

In t he G arden with Julia Smith
June is a lovely month in the garden, with my favourite plant – the rose – at its best. Roses will fit in just about every space. The David Austin ‘English Roses’ are bred to have the scent and colour of the old roses, and the shrub ones are ideal to place as a small climber if your space is limited, and have the added bonus of flowers starting from low down so you don’t get the bare stems. If you have a large garden with a mature tree you could try growing one of the prolific ramblers like ‘Kiftsgate’ or ‘Rambling Rector’ which work best being allowed to romp up a big tree and do their thing with no pruning. At the end of the month give your roses their second feed of granular rose food. The dreaded perennial battle with bindweed can commence now. When you first see it appearing you can put in a bamboo cane and let it twine around then pull the cane up carefully without breaking the stem and stuff in a small sandwich bag still attached to the ground (I know it is sounding a bit crazy but keep it up ...), then you can spray the glyphosate weedkiller into the bag carefully, knot the top, and leave on the ground until the bindweed shrivels up. This has the advantage of not drifting onto other plants and being rainproof. If it has grown too wild to do this, cut it off and then start from the beginning with the cane etc. Roundup have a new product which is like one of those roll-on deodorants, a weedkiller gel, which looks easy to use (although I haven’t tried it myself) and mess free. With the Chelsea flower show this month it is the ideal time to do the ‘Chelsea Chop’ which is a way of shortening perennials which can become leggy. It promotes smaller, later but increased quantity of flowers. You can try it on lots of plants e.g. Sedums, Rudbeckias, Echinaceas, Heleniums and Asters. You could also cut back half the stems and leave the other half, thus lengthening the flowering display – have a try and see how you get on. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

Cutting Red Tape
Ask any businessman about what the Government can do to support small businesses and one of the first answers you will get is ʻcut the red tapeʼ. But exactly where should those cuts fall and are they really going to stimulate growth? I run a small business, so I asked myself the question and my first response was that there are so many rules and regulations that it is near impossible for one person running a business to know them all. The two areas that strangle small business development the most are employment legislation and health and safety. Both of these are important matters, but a survey last year showed that 2 in 3 small business owners felt that the hiring and firing of staff needed to be greatly simplified. I hope that George Osborne doesnʼt think that the employers national insurance ʻholidayʼ announced in this yearʼs Budget is contributing to the removal of red tape. True it reduces the burden of employment cost, but hidden around the corner is Auto-Enrolment for pensions, which is going to add far more to the cost of employing people. A start has been made on the simplification of Employment Tribunal processes, but that only affects employers and staff who have fallen out. What about help for those businesses where it hasnʼt reached that point? The problem is that Government officials live in a different world to the rest of us. It is not until they understand what goes on in a small business that anyone in power will have a hope of providing the help and support we all need. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

The Local Answer
Dear Readers, I hope you are well and had a good May. I am also hoping that many of you attended the “Paws on Patrol” event that was held in Gloucester Park on Saturday 1st June. Over the last month the local policing teams have continued to be out and about within our communities, with numerous events taking place. For information around future events please visit our page on the Constabulary’s website. Crime across our communities is still in decline, which is great news, but we continue to have “spikes” in certain areas of crime. Bike thefts and shed burglaries in particular are a priority for us. Many cyclists are spending hundreds and even thousands of pounds on bicycles and that makes them more attractive to criminals so it’s worth remembering that, as a rough guide, it’s advisable that you spend 10% of the value of your bike on security. We are encouraging people to register with a site like www.bikeregister.com or www.immobilise.com and to buy a security pack that suits you. There are some hi-tech chemical etching devices available at relatively low cost that invisibly mark your bike, and data tag sets which mean it is can be traced if stolen. The hope is to get as many bikes as possible on these registers as they provide a means for officers to quickly check if a bike is stolen, and good evidence for us to convict thieves. With the interest in cycling growing since the Olympics, and the increase in expensive mountain and racer bikes on our streets, we’ll be looking to push home the bike security message as the weather improves. The best advice, including a video showing you how not to lock a bike, can be found at the crime reduction section of www.gloucestershire.police.uk. In terms of our enforcement action over the last couple of months, as the result of police activity throughout May we have arrested and charged many prolific offenders that have been causing harm to our communities. Excellent arrests have been made with individuals who were breaking into your sheds and stealing from your cars – we cannot, however, become complacent. If you have any information please don’t hesitate to contact your local community policing team on 101 or, indeed, please send us a email. I hope you all have a safe June and I look Neil Smith forward to speaking to you all in July. Gloucester Inspector

Shipbuilding in Gloucester
Shipbuilding in Gloucester dates back several centuries, but in more recent times it formed a significant part of the overall manufacturing scene within the City. The firm of William Hunt & Co were building sailing schooners of up to 175 tons draft weight at Canal Basin in the 1840s, as was Edward Hipwood at Westgate Bridge. By 1851, 55 men were employed on a full-time basis and these activities generated other associated trades such as mast and block-makers, an anchor smith, and chandleries selling rope, sailcloth etc. The Sunderland shipbuilding firm of Pickersgill & Miller took over a yard in 1859 and in 1860 launched a 500 ton Page 38

ship – far larger than anything previously attempted. This event was quickly overtaken eight years later, when Fielding & Platt built the first of its sea-going steamers. However, after about 1870, the industry fell into sharp decline. It may never have recovered but for the onset of the Great War. As part of the war effort between 1917 and 1920, six concrete barges weighing in at over 1,000 tons each were constructed by a workforce of around 300 men. The firm of Nicholls &
Hobrough, working for the Admiralty, built the barges on land opposite the old gas works at Hempstead. They had to be fabricated and launched broadside into the canal. The concrete ship Creteroad pictured below at the moment of its launch, caused a terrific wave which damaged the canal banks, sweeping over the tow path and hedge, stranding a large quantity of fish in the adjoining field. This was the swan-song of shipbuilding in Gloucester, although construction of smaller vessels, such as the 36' trow used in the Queenʼs Diamond Jubilee celebrations continues to this day.
