It definitely feels like Spring is on its’ way! Especially with all the exciting events March has to offer. Firstly, don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 10th March – our restaurants have some fantastic ideas for a real treat. Then of course, March is the highlight of Cheltenham Racecourse’s calendar, starting with Champion Day on the 12th, followed by Ladies Day (13th), St Patrick’s Day (14th) and the grand finale Gold Cup Day on Friday 15th. We have some great competitions this month – don’t forget you can now enter all of them via email or post. You could win a 3 course meal for four at the fabulous Spice Rooms, tickets to see the Vienna Ballet perform Sleeping Beauty at the Bacon Theatre, and a pair of Silver tickets in Kingholm’s Mira Showers Stand to watch Gloucester take on Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership. Our ‘What’s On’ listings have an array of events to suit just about every taste including music gigs, theatre, comedy and great days out. Café René are celebrating their 10th birthday so join in the fun at the ’Allo ’Allo themed evening with live band Way Out West. With Easter fast approaching we have some delicious chocolatey treats to try your hand at in our ‘Delicious Dishes’ column, and catch up with our ‘In the Garden’ expert Julia Smith offering advice on how to get your garden ready for spring.

Now the children have been sorted, time for your cake!
Easter Chocolate Fudge Cake Ingredients: 150g unsalted butter, at room temperature; 150g light muscovado sugar; 40g cocoa powder; 150g self-raising flour; 1tsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda; 2 medium eggs; 1tsp vanilla extract; 142ml soured cream; 2tsp golden syrup. For the ganache: 250ml double cream; 250g dark chocolate. To decorate: 1 chocolate flake, crumbled; 120g mini eggs. Method: 1 Heat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line 2x18cm sandwich tins. 2 Beat together the butter and sugar until pale. 3 In a separate bowl, sift the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt; mix well. Add to the creamed butter and sugar. 4 In a jug, whisk the eggs with the vanilla, soured cream and syrup. Pour over the dry ingredients and beat together. Divide the mixture equally between the tins. 5 Bake for 20-25 minutes until springy. Leave to cool for a few minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely. 6 For the ganache, put the cream and chocolate into a bowl over barely simmering water. Heat gently until the chocolate has melted. Remove from the heat and stir briefly, until combined and smooth (don't overstir). 7 Allow to cool for 1 hr, or until thick enough to spread. 8 Use slightly less than half to sandwich the cakes together. Spread remaining ganache over the cake, then decorate with flake and mini eggs. 9 Store your cake in an airtight container in the fridge to keep it fresh for longer – if it lasts that long!

ʻThe Crossʼ
The meeting place of the four main streets of the old city has always been known as “The Cross”. From about the 13th Century a large and intricately carved stone monument, surmounted by a crucifix stood at the intersection. This was removed in about 1751 to enable horsedrawn carriages to negotiate the junction more easily.

“The Cross” is now dominated by St Michaelʼs Tower, built in 1465 on the site of the church of St Michael the Archangel. From 1976 to 1981 the upper floors were used as a bell museum, and in 1985 a tourist information centre was established there. Now home to Gloucester Civic Trust, it has become a place of learning about the history of the City for the benefit of the community and for visitors. Very many activities take place in the tower throughout the year. Details can be found on the website: www.gloucestercivictrust.org

CHINESE ORIENTAL DINING
All you can eat Oriental Cuisine with table service
Blossom believe in offering their customers the highest standards in food and service so they truly experience the unique taste of China. The Local Answer team visited Blossom for the first time since their refurbishment at the end of last year to dine in their newly modernised stylish restaurant. Blossom is owned by the Ko family, offering the people of Gloucester their own native oriental cuisine at reasonable prices. The all you can eat restaurant has set prices for lunches and evenings and offers table service – so just sit back, relax and enjoy the feast of culinary flavours about to be served at your table. We started by sharing a platter of smoked chicken, deep fried squid and an array of sesame prawn toast, crispy seaweed, bbq ribs, satay chicken and crispy wan tons. Every dish was
fantastic and it was great to have such a variety of starters. Our next course is definitely a popular choice with many – crispy aromatic duck with pancakes and hoisin sauce, accompanied by a cup of saki rice wine which was smooth and warm on a cold evening, but I think I would probably advise leaving the car at home as it did have a bit of a kick! For our main course we ordered a selection of our favourite dishes – chicken and cashew, beef and pineapple, sweet and sour chicken and seafood – accompanied by egg fried rice. The restaurant is always busy so I would strongly recommend booking a table in advance.
BLOSSOM features an exciting new way of serving food, a tradition originating from China. A wide variety of authentic Chinese dishes are served to each diner at their table, as they want them. All you can enjoy for £15.90* per person allows you to taste over 150 freshly-cooked to order mouthwatering dishes. The night doesn’t end with the gastronomical adventure as BLOSSOM also invites you to enjoy a delicious range of desserts and beverages.

At the time of writing, Iʼve just completed the Gloucester 10k run, starting and finishing at Gloucester Park. Around 750 runners took part – despite some cold and wet conditions – which, in my view, is good going for the first such event. Iʼm looking forward to HRH the Princess Royal officially opening the new athletics track at Blackbridge in Podsmead. The £380,000 project has been funded by Severn Trent Water, the National Lottery, the City Council (through developer contributions) and the athletics community. Itʼs taken quite a few years to get there, but we do now have a superb facility. The next phase is to provide an improved clubhouse and changing rooms. Already local businesses are getting involved and a number of funding sources are being pursued by Bob Purcell, Richard Blackwell and the Gloucester Athletic Track Management Company. Another exciting project is the new Boathouse proposed by Gloucester Rowing Club alongside the canal at Hempsted. Fundraising has been underway for a while on the £1.5 million project to provide match funding for a lottery application. Both of these projects will give Gloucester an Olympic legacy. Weʼre also due to hear imminently as to whether Gloucester has been selected as a host city for the Rugby World Cup 2015. Weʼre already down to the last 17, with 10 or 12 making it through to the final line-up. Weʼre the only Club rugby ground still left in contention and Iʼm fairly confident about our prospects – although you can never take these things for granted. Part of our bid has also been about legacy, so weʼre hoping that we can get more young people to play the game. In the interests of balance I ought also to talk about football. After being away from the city since the floods of 2007, we desperately want to see Gloucester City FC back home. The Club is working hard to resolve the issues it has with its planning application, particularly flood-related matters. I hope these can be brought to a conclusion soon. Then, as a sporting city, we will be somewhere near complete. The Local Answer

Gloucester Rugby host Biarritz in quarter final Gloucester Rugby will take on Biarritz Olympique at Kingsholm in the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter final on Thursday 4th April – kick off 8pm. The game sees the Club feature in the knock out stages of European competition for the first time since April 2010 when they took on London Wasps at Adams Park. Sinatra is BIGGEST RAT OF THE PACK back!
David’s career has enjoyed many highlights but his personal favourite was a recording session that took place at The Abbey Road studios with a 35 piece orchestra. He was asked to recreate the original Sinatra recording of ‘New York, New York’ to promote the new Atari computer game ‘Tycoon City – New York’ which was released worldwide in 2006. The Producers claimed that they had listened to every Sinatra impersonator in the UK and USA and that David’s vocals were by far the most accurate and natural. Now that really is a compliment!
LAS VEGAS LEGEND ‘BUDDY GRECO’ SAID OF DAVID, “THIS GUY REALLY IS SINATRA”. an EVENING OF PURE BRILLIANCE AND ENTERTAINMENT!

NEW ARRIVALS: (left) Kookaburras come to Prinknash Bird & Deer Park and (above) Melanie with ‘Eider’ – the adorable gypsy caravan.
There’s so much to do and see ... In 2009 Prinknash Bird & Deer Park introduced ‘Teal’ the ‘roll top’ gypsy caravan for children’s parties of 16 or more, and has since added sister caravan ‘Eider’ – the perfect place to have a more secluded child’s party. Eider seats four children and two adults with ease for the birthday picnic and costs just £45 including entry to the park. It took seven months to hand paint Eider and deck out the caravan internally with delightful fabrics to charm any child. Eider is situated in the Golden Wood, not far from the famous Wendy House, and must surely be the most unique venue in England to celebrate a birthday. This really is the place to be seen for your child’s special day! As if this is not enough, last summer the Park got off the ground with the Kookaburras who are flown at 12 noon every day! Park owner Melanie Meigh hand-reared the Kookaburras and they are now tame enough to be fed by visitors and, of course, entertain their ‘guests’ with their aerial demonstrations. Since 1974 the park has been a wonderful, tranquil place for children, parents and grandparents to enjoy beautiful gardens and meet a variety of wildfowl and other critters eager to make friends – and it just keeps on improving. Plans for an education centre and café have now been approved and work is expected to start soon.
All developments are carefully designed to enhance visitors’ enjoyment of the park – strictly limiting any changes to those in keeping with the ambience of this Cotswold gem. While the surroundings are beautiful – and worth a visit in their own right – many people simply enjoy being close to the park’s inhabitants. There are so many enchanting characters to see and meet, and it’s the ability to get so close to all the creatures – and feed most of them – that ensures people return time and again. As well as the extensive collection of waterfowl and peafowl eager to feed from your hand, there’s the tame fallow deer, pygmy goats and, of course, the famous Prinknash reindeer – Rudolph and Prancer. There’s also miniature donkeys – Treacle and her mum, Toffee. This adorable duo love all the attention they can get – just like all the other friends you’ll meet at Prinknash. And, rapidly approaching his second birthday on 11th May is reindeer calf Cupid – so cute, and the only reindeer calf in Gloucestershire, so don’t miss the opportunity to capture some wonderful moments on camera. For further information on how enjoyable your next visit to Prinknash will be, or for details on hiring ‘Teal’, ‘Eider’ or the ‘Mad Hatter’s Marquee’ – call 01452 812727 or visit www.thebirdanddeerpark.com.
Easter excitement at the Bijou Bird Park Mad Hatter’s Marquee Prinknash Bird & Deer Park are pulling out all the stops this Easter holiday, and for the third year is running the Mad Hatters Tea Party which will be held on Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Wednesday 27th of March. The tea party was a runaway success last Easter and includes entry to the park, face painting and – of course – tea in the stunning marquee which has been set up in true Alice in Wonderland madness. Whilst peacocks hoot, fallow deer graze and the miniature donkeys bray, the scene has been set for children to dress up and really go into a frenzy with the best Alice or Mad Hatter outfit winning tickets to the Park’s next event – Fairy & Wizard World – in May. To book your places (£10 per child and £6.50 per adult) for this wonderful Easter event, please contact the park (details below) – but hurry, spaces are limited!

March in Gloucestershire is always exciting with the racing buzz in the air! The daffodils are at their best on the roundabouts and verges to welcome the punters, and the weather can be beautiful – we have sat outside a pub in the town at 10 o’clock at night after the races in our shirt-sleeves! On the other hand there has also been snow for the races, so fingers crossed! Evergreen grasses such as Festuca glauca or Cortaderia selloana (pampas grass) are pruned annually in early spring. Smaller grasses are lightly pruned to remove dead leaf tips (a pair of scissors does this very easily), whilst the big pampas grasses need very thick gloves and possibly hedge trimmers to cut them down hard to the base. Rake out dead material from the base to let in light and air into the centre of the plant. Shrubs grown for their colourful stems like the dogwoods (cornus alba, c.sanguinea and c.sericea) or the willows (including salix alba and s. irronata) can be hard pruned now to give the best stem colour for next winter. Winter flowering heathers look better for an annual pruning to keep the plants compact and bushy. The books recommend using secateurs but if there is a large area of heathers it is easier to use shears. Don’t cut into the old wood but just prune off nearly all of the previous seasons growth. I know that I nag but do keep on top of the weeding – they will start to shoot up now and it will make it so much easier later on if you get on top of it now. Annual weeds (ones that grow, seed and die like Hairy Bittercress or Herb Robert) can be hoed off when small if the soil is dryish and left to die. Perennial weeds like dandelions or ground elder will need digging out (and make sure you get every last piece of root or it will regrow). Or you could use a systemic weedkiller like Roundup (follow instructions on the bottle) to zap them, especially if they are in a difficult to excavate place. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Propert y News Landlords’ unseen costs Unforeseen costs, including unexpected maintenance and a shortfall in rent, are hitting landlords in the pocket. According to new research, more than 80% of landlords say they are receiving less rent than was agreed, while 90% are concerned about the possibility of tenant arrears. Four in ten say they have over £1,000 a year of costs that they have not budgeted for, while 70% of landlords have experienced void periods in the last three years – half said the void lasts up to three months, and one in ten said the void lasted more than six months.
Altogether, the average landlord finds over £1,500 costs a year that were unexpected. The study also highlighted that over half of tenants are late with their rental payments and 59% of landlords had to chase tenants for payment at some point in the last year. Nick Cooper, managing director of Northwood, said: “Landlords come under fire with accusations of greed, but this research highlights that landlords face a number of difficulties. “On top of unexpected costs, tenant arrears and vacant properties are a very real concern, and landlords can be hit hard.”

No businessman or woman to whom Iʼve spoken since Christmas has had a good word to say for the falls of snow that weʼve experienced in the last couple of months. Yes it may look pretty on the hills, and the children may thrive in building snowmen and sledding down those hills, but Iʼm afraid itʼs only bad news for businesses – large and small. The challenges faced by our retailers are well documented and if we canʼt get out of the house to visit the shops, the move towards internet shopping can only gather momentum. Trade in pubs and restaurants hasnʼt been lost to online competition, but it too has suffered badly at what has become known in our office as ʻthe S wordʼ. Any chance that our beleaguered construction industry had to make a flying start to 2013 disappeared as snow fell thick and fast across all parts of the country, with Gloucestershire bearing its fair share. It left me trying to work out which industries might benefit, but apart from manufacturers of Wellington boots, I couldnʼt come up with any answers. Looking ahead, the weather patterns in the UK are certainly changing and if we get too much more of the S word, it will prove yet another threat to economic recovery. Project Solace tackles ASB Hello Readers – I hope you are well. This month I would like to talk about an issue I am very passionate about – Anti Social Behaviour (ASB). When you hear or read about ASB your mind can quite easily be drawn to visions of young people hanging around street corners intimidating members of our communities. I can understand this as it is a perception very often reinforced by what we see on the news. However it is very important to stress that it is not just this. ASB can be anything that has a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of an individual or indeed a community. Since 2010 Project Solace has been operating in the city to deal with ASB. They are a multi-agency team consisting of Gloucestershire Constabulary, Gloucester City Council and Gloucester City Homes. They can be followed on Facebook and it may be worthwhile viewing these to see the positive work they are carrying out in your areas: Twitter – @Project Solace Facebook – Facebook.com/ProjectSolaceASB Email – asb.referrals@gloscityhomes.co.uk Telephone – 0800 408 2000 (freephone) or 01452 424344 (normal call rates apply) available 24/7 Online – www.gloscityhomes.co.uk – clicking on ‘report ASB’ which is on the home page Just a few areas that can be deemed as ‘ASB’ are vandalism, threatening behaviour, abusive language, noisy neighbours, graffiti, fly tipping, littering and dog fouling. To increase Project Solace’s presence within your communities we commenced a series of ASB van patrols last year, initially as a “pilot scheme” to see if they were needed/successful. They have proved extremely worthwhile and have been very well received by many of you – which is why they will be continuing throughout 2013. The vans carry members of police, housing and environmental health who can respond to incidents of anti-social behaviour and deal with it together as a team. This is key as many ASB issues cannot be tackled by one agency alone and require a partnership approach, something I am continuing to help foster throughout the city. I wish you all a safe March and look forward to speaking to you Neil Smith in April. Gloucester Inspector

Having been established in the lettings market in the Gloucestershire area for over ten years now we are increasingly receiving more and more enquiries from unhappy landlords that are not receiving the correct service from their current letting agent. Since the recession where there was a downturn in the sales market, the lettings market pretty much doubled over night resulting in many more letting agency's appearing throughout the area with offers that are hard to refuse, to landlords that are also feeling the pinch. Unfortunately it’s the old saying " pay peanuts and you get monkeys". Many other costs are often hidden within the small print from charging inventory's to check outs and referencing actually resulting in the landlords paying substantially more than initially expected. More than the financial side, the biggest complaint's we hear are inspections not being carried out and landlords having their properties returned in a terrible state resulting again in more cost and void periods. Unfortunately so many landlords feel trapped by their current agents and fear the void periods or cost. We at Northwood hope to have the answer by offering any new landlords wishing to change from their current agent no set up fees and no commission payable to Northwood in the first month. We will then continue on a discounted rate for the remaining five months of the agreement in order to make this transition as smooth as possible without incurring unnecessary costs.
Come to us and we’ll sort your problems! HAM
