Targeting £100 a mile for two great causes Our cover this month features William Reddaway and Strider – his 11-year-old horse – who, together, are attempting to raise £250,000 for two charities by completing a 2,500 mile ‘Ride Round England’. William, 65, was born and grew up in London, but Gloucestershire has been his home since 1984. He’s a supporter of Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre Riding for the Disabled, helping young people in London who, as he says, “have struggles that I never had, and don’t have the smiles and laughter I’ve enjoyed.” But William and Strider’s efforts will also contribute greatly to supporting young people in our county too. The Family Holiday Association, which helps many hundreds of families in dire circumstances to have a simple break, has made a commitment to use funds raised by the ride to give holidays to at least 20 Gloucestershire families. Up and above his main fundraising target, William will help the Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Association to raise £5,000 for their activities. This local charity, based at Cheltenham Racecourse, is only a mile from where he lives – William looks down to the racecourse from Cleeve Hill every time he rides out. The challenge – for William and Strider – is to travel to the four corners of England! They will pass through towns and cities, visiting 30 Cathedrals and Abbeys en route. William wants to make enough noise as possible (he is learning to play the trumpet) to help him surpass the £250,000 target. The pair start their adventure on Saturday 11th May, starting and finishing at the Farncombe Estate (on the side of the Cotswolds near the village of Broadway) where William worked from 1983 to 2011. They will be visiting Gloucester Cathedral at 10am on Monday 13th May, so why not pop along and support them? The ride will take 6 months or more – a long, tiring journey for both horse and rider. Delicious Dishes

Chocolate, Cherry & Walnut Brownies Ingredients: 200g/7oz unsalted butter 200g/7oz dark chocolate (I use Sainsbury’s ‘Basics’) 3 large eggs 300g/101⁄2 oz granulated sugar 2tsp vanilla extract 125g/41⁄2oz plain flour Pinch of salt 100g/31⁄2 oz dried cherries 100g/31⁄2 oz walnut pieces Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. 2 Grease and line a 20x30cm (8-12in) rectangular baking tin, 3-4cm (1-11⁄2 in) deep, with greaseproof or parchment paper. 3 Melt the butter and chocolate either in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or gently in the microwave. 4 With an electric whisk, beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract until they are thick and creamy. 5 Mix in the melted chocolate and butter.

6 Finally, stir in the flour, salt, cherries and walnuts. 7 Pour into baking tin and cook for about 25 minutes until the top is cracking and the centre is just set. 8 Leave to cool in the tin for about 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

There’s not many places in Gloucestershire that regularly serve lobster, and certainly not at sensible prices – at The Parrot whole lobster dishes range from £24.95-£26.95 and half lobster (ideal for starters) from £12.95-£14.95. And if those prices aren’t quite tempting enough for you to visit, there’s an extra 10% off any lobster with the advertisement below. It’s deemed appropriate to enjoy Champagne with lobster so, to enhance your pleasure, The Parrot are serving Champagne Cocktails at half price – only £4.95 each – for diners selecting lobster as a starter or main course! We had to go along and try the new menu for ourselves and, having never had lobster before, I chose it as my starter. I like food with a bit of a kick, so went for the lobster milano – grilled lobster drizzled

with a light garlic, chilli, cream and seafood sauce, served with a timbale of spaghetti. I was given a special lobster ‘tool’ to get the meat out but was not sure if I was using it right, anyway the shell looked empty when I had finished – it was delicious! I followed this with a Herefordshire Angus rump with The Parrot’s renowned triple cooked chips, and a most refreshing Citrus Panna Cotta for dessert. My husband had the Carpaccio of Beef for starter, and our son had the Spanish King Prawns & Chorizo – the presentation of both was as beautiful as they tasted. They decided to share their main courses – Whole Lobster and 16oz T-bone steak – and described both as ‘awesome’. From the impressive selection of home made desserts, they chose Creme Brulee and Chocolate & Caramel Mousse – scrummy!

An array of choices on the menu Other features that made our evening a joy from start to finish included the attentive and accommodating attitude of the staff, especially helpful when you have such an array of choices on the menu and you don’t know what to pick! The venue itself is much more than your regular ‘pub’ – it’s spacious, yet warm, and the refurbished dining area is a pleasure to eat in. There’s no Juke Box or TV – just pleasant background music – and parking couldn’t be easier, the large Portland Street car park is just across the ‘one way system’ about a minute’s walk.

Massive £4.5 million investment in Dean Close Prep School’s future Those of you who drive down the Lansdown Road in Cheltenham cannot fail to see the huge building project underway at Dean Close Preparatory School. This building, which is due to be completed in autumn 2013, will provide a new state of the performing arts centre, additional music suite, academic classrooms and formal reception area. The building will replace the old school hall which was built in the 70’s. The new theatre, which will be used for drama, music performances, school assemblies and examinations, will also have backstage facilities including a Green Room. Attached to the hall will be eight teaching areas, which will be located over two floors and will include a dedicated IT suite and Drama rooms. These new classrooms will enable the Prep School to locate subjects much more in faculty groups to further Artists Impression advance cross - curricular teaching and learning. No battles at Battledown!

Situated to the south-east of Cheltenham town centre, Battledown Estate lies on elevated ground rising to over 500 feet above sea level. The Estate, similar to that of Pittville, was originally established as a private housing development in the nineteenth century and still survives as such to this day. The site was first recorded as the fortress of Baedala, a Saxon chieftain who lived there around 500 AD. Later, as part of agricultural lands belonging to the Abbey of Cirencester, the area became known as Badleton which was later corrupted to Battledown. No known battle took place there, although there was a skirmish of minor proportions nearby during the English Civil War period. In 1643, the Earl of Essex, for the Parliamentarian cause, marched from London to raise the siege of Gloucester – then surrounded by Royalist forces. The Earlʼs forces passed through the Battledown area, driving Cavaliers out of Cheltenham towards Painswick. A building in Hales Road, near the junction with Hewlett Road once traded as the Battledown Inn and bore a sign depicting a clash between Roundheads and Cavaliers, but this has long since disappeared – a casualty in the decline of the public house trade.

This spring has come so late that everything will be in a rush to catch up! I read an article that said if the soil hadn’t warmed up enough to get some vegetable seeds in by midApril the farmers would be facing lots of problems with insufficient time for them to take advantage of the optimum levels of light to grow before the days start to shorten again! As I write this in April the weather has finally given us a taster of spring – the cherry trees are on the verge of bursting into blossom, albeit a good month later than usual. Now you will probably have a very well weeded garden if you have taken any notice at all of my columns in the last couple of months! This will really benefit you from this month onwards as things zoom into growth. Tidy up spring flowering plants such as Helleborus x hybridus (deadhead if you don’t want them to seed), Pulmonaria (cut off all the tatty leaves and old flowerheads) and Euphorbia polychroma and E. Griffithii (shear off the top third of the plant to keep it deadheaded and a nice shape). You should be able to start hardening off tender herbaceous plants which you may have bought in the tempting indoor displays in the garden centres and nurseries. This consists of a couple of weeks of taking them outside during the day, and popping them back into the greenhouse or conservatory at night – gradually leaving them for longer and longer until they are out all night. Keep an eye on the weather in case of frosts etc. (although goodness knows we really shouldn’t get any this late on!). You can make a cold frame out of old windows, Perspex off-cuts etc., and place in a warm sheltered spot. Raise the lid in the day to circulate the air and cover over at night if you have no greenhouse. Sow some runner beans as the soil warms up, making a wigwam of bamboo canes for the beans to twine up. The cultivar ‘White Lady’ is very pretty if you fancy white flowers for a change. When my children were young, I always remember my Mum telling me about how to control the amount of television they watched, and what they saw, by operating the best form of censorship – the ʻoffʼ switch – which also saved money! Twenty years or so on and the phenomenon is different, but the players are all the same. Now itʼs not television – although believe me, my grown up children remain capable of argument over that issue still – itʼs mobile phones, ipads and the like. There are many good things about the technology revolution and Iʼm not a dinosaur campaigning for the return of an age past. But our constant craving for immediate contact with someone elsewhere, and our need to have answers to everything literally at our fingertips, comes at a social cost – on top of the vast sums spent ʻkeeping upʼ with the latest devices. I read recently some amazing statistics about internet and social networking usage. Do you know how many times the ʻLikeʼ button is clicked on Facebook? Apparently itʼs a staggering 2.7 billion times per day. Mindblowing! A billion search requests on Google, 110 million Tweets and 250 million photo uploads on Facebook – again daily. Burnout from business usage of these devices is a real threat, so if we want to live long enough to see what the next decade brings from the technology revolution, perhaps we should listen to my Mumʼs advice. Credit to all involved in Festival safety The races are over and we survived again without any major drama, which is clearly nice to see after all the planning and hard work that went into the week. I think I am correct in saying that more planning and preparation went into this years Festival than at any other meet before, in an attempt to keep good order and have less crime. I think we were successful. Crime was down from last year’s figures and, having worked the last few years, I am sure the 2013 event was the most peaceful. Apart from a few minor scuffles and some sporadic thievery, the week went off without anything of note. Considering there were hundreds of thousands of people moving through or partying in Cheltenham, I am always slightly surprised how well behaved most people are. The inclement weather may have helped but – without argument to the contrary – I am taking the credit! Credit must in reality go to all the differing agencies involved such as the local authority, the licensing industry, the Police, the staff at Prestbury Park, the Street Pastors and the variety of agencies and voluntary groups which help make the Cheltenham Festival such a wonderful event. One of the additions to the Town Centre was the Police ‘hub’ which was located outside M&S on the High Street. This is something which I have been after for some time – a mini police station and ambulance triage point right in the centre of things. It was well received and was a feature from first thing in the morning to last thing at night; and something which I hope we can replicate next year and augment if possible. It basically brought the emergency services right into the ‘action’ and created a safe space for all. We gave out water, gave out advice, gave out information and helped dozens of lost soles find their way back to reality. A real win win for all. The more mundane aspect of Policing continues however as we ready ourselves for the warmer months (please God) and the challenges they always bring. I will be meeting my supervisors over the next week or so to set in place our plans for the next 12 months – how we will be reducing crime and creating a peaceful Cheltenham, but still targeting the thieves and drug dealers and getting as many of them locked up as possible.
