ANSWER
With the rugby season drawing to a close, ‘Live at Kingsholm’ returns to our pages this month to promote two international superstars of the music world – McFly and Ronan Keating. Both will perform in the city next month – first up, on Thursday 13th June, is McFly, followed by Ronan the day after. The two acts are bound to draw attention from ladies of all ages, so – if they’re not already sold out by the time you read this – order your tickets quickly! For those keen to see the former Boyzone lead singer, why not enter our competition for a pair of tickets – see page 15. At 10am on Monday 13th May two ‘not so well known’ characters will be within a stone’s throw of Kingsholm at Gloucester Cathedral. Featured on our cover, William Reddaway and his horse Strider will be visiting 30 Cathedrals and Abbeys on their 6-month, 2,500 mile ride around England in a bid to raise £250,000 for charity. Cheer them on if you can. Our centre pages this month display the new daytime menu served at Tiger’s Eye in Southgate Street, with a fabulous ‘buy one, get one free’ deal on ‘light meals’. Another great food opportunity is also presented this month by The Parrot Bar & Grill for those who enjoy, or would like to try, lobster. They’re offering a discount on any lobster dish and, if you also order a Champagne Cocktail – you’ll get it half price! It means a trip to Cheltenham, but where else can you enjoy sensibly priced lobster in Gloucestershire? We’ve got all our usual columns for your enjoyment, and our ‘Did You Know?’ article talks about James (Jemmy) Wood who served as City Sheriff between 1811-1831 – what do you think his ‘claim to fame’ is?
Fingers crossed for some May sunshine!

William and Strider with Cotswold RDA Centre Manager Mo Begg (left) and horse agility trainer Sheila Reed.
Targeting £100 a mile for two great causes Our cover this month features William Reddaway and Strider – his 11-year-old horse – who, together, are attempting to raise £250,000 for two charities by completing a 2,500 mile ‘Ride Round England’. William, 65, was born and grew up in London, but Gloucestershire has been his home since 1984. He’s a supporter of Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre Riding for the Disabled, helping young people in London who, as he says, “have struggles that I never had, and don’t have the smiles and laughter I’ve enjoyed.” But William and Strider’s efforts will also contribute greatly to supporting young people in our county too. The Family Holiday Association, which helps many hundreds of families in dire circumstances to have a simple break, has made a commitment to use funds raised by the ride to give holidays to at least 20 Gloucestershire families. Up and above his main fundraising target, William will help the Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Association to raise £5,000 for their activities. This local charity, based at Cheltenham Racecourse, is only a mile from where he lives – William looks down to the racecourse from Cleeve Hill every time he rides out. The challenge – for William and Strider – is to travel to the four corners of England! They will pass through towns and cities, visiting 30 Cathedrals and Abbeys en route. William wants to make enough noise as possible (he is learning to play the trumpet) to help him surpass the £250,000 target. The pair start their adventure on Saturday 11th May, starting and finishing at the Farncombe Estate (on the side of the Cotswolds near the village of Broadway) where William worked from 1983 to 2011. They will be visiting Gloucester Cathedral at 10am on Monday 13th May, so why not pop along and support them? The ride will take 6 months or more – a long, tiring journey for both horse and rider. They’ll certainly have ‘earned’ every penny raised for these great causes! For details/donations visit www.rideroundengland.org

Fantastic Music Events at Café René 2-11pm Saturday 25th May 2013
On Saturday 25th May 2013 Café René will once again be hosting the free charity inner-city festival – Rene:Gade Festival. Now in it’s fourth year, it has gone from strength to strength, becoming a date for people to remember, and a much loved event supported by the local music scene and its bands. This event takes place all day and evening on The Green Stage in Marylone just outside the entrance to Café Rene. A delicious concoction of Ska, Reggae, Hip Hop and a bit of Rock n Roll will be on the menu and served up steaming hot from 2.30pm on Saturday 25th May. There will be a yummy BBQ to keep your strength up and feed your faces all day long. DO NOT MISS MAN VS HEAT Chilli Eating Competition at 3.45pm anyone wishing to enter please email info@caferene.co.uk
Each year Café René also have an outside bar and their famous René BBQ keeping festival goers full and refreshed throughout the day. Running from 2-11pm, it is a full day of live music and it’s free! All that Café René ask is that people donate to MIND on the day so if everyone donates a quid that would be just jubbly. This year some incredible bands will be playing – KSH and The Going Goods, Emmett Brown, Swift Manouver, 6Fears7, Prime Position & Blatantlee Sly, The Beat Harlows and JPEG. Café René are really looking forward to hosting the bands – after all, what’s better than music, friends, food and (hopefully) a bit of sunshine! The event is open to all ages until 7pm provided minors are accompanied by a responsible adult, parent or guardian at all times.
Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival
The R&B flag for the 2013 Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival will again be flown by Café René – the perfect place for this prestigious summer event with its combination of a fabulous indoor venue plus an outdoor stage in a natural amphitheatre at Greyfriars. Now in its eleventh year, the Festival starts its exciting week of musical fulfilment on Monday 29th July with top toe-tapping Rhythm and Blues musicians and bands entertaining audiences for seven days. Café René are proud to announce how their weekend line up is looking so far: Saturday 3rd August kicks off with Damon T, Funke and the Two Tone Baby, Gotcha, Land of Giants, The Infinite Collective, The Charlton Blues Kings and the mighty John Fairhurst to headline this fantastic Saturday feast of music.
Monday 29th July to Sunday 4th August 2013
Sunday 4th August will be opened by Jake Watson followed by The Laurence Jones Band, The Worried Men, Innes Sibun, Aynsley Lister, The Lewis Creaven Band and, widely recognised as one of the finest Blues singers, Connie Lush. The grand weekend finale not only has superb musical content but more entertainment throughout Saturday and Sunday can be enjoyed with face painting for the children whilst ‘grown ups’ only can experience the Café René ‘Real Ale & Cider Festival’. Supplement your hunger with a pig roast or the famous ‘René BBQ’. Each year the festival is FREE for all to enjoy. Throughout the week Café René help raise money through various fundraising activities for a well deserving cause (to be announced) – last year the sum raised was £2310.15 for Macmillan Cancer Support and they are always keen to better their fundraising efforts year on year, so please take some sheckles for the charity buckets.

‘A woman should never be seen eating or drinking, unless it be lobster salad and Champagne, the only true feminine and becoming viands’ Lord Byron
A perfect combination! The Parrot Bar and Grill in North Place, Cheltenham, is already well known for its impressive steak menu, from a succulent Herefordshire Angus rump to a Tomahawk Kobe rib eye – touted as the finest steak in the world! Building on the success of specialising in these fantastic grills, The Parrot has now added some superb seafood and fish dishes to their menu – scallops, oysters, whitebait, crayfish, tuna and, star of the show, lobster! You can view the new menu online at www.theparrotbar.com.
Champagne Cocktails Half Price! There’s not many places in Gloucestershire that regularly serve lobster, and certainly not at sensible prices – at The Parrot whole lobster dishes range from £24.95-£26.95 and half lobster (ideal for starters) from £12.95-£14.95. And if those prices aren’t quite tempting enough for you to visit, there’s an extra 10% off any lobster with the advertisement below. It’s deemed appropriate to enjoy Champagne with lobster so, to enhance your pleasure, The Parrot are serving Champagne Cocktails at half price – only £4.95 each – for diners selecting lobster as a starter or main course! We had to go along and try the new menu for ourselves and, having never had lobster before, I chose it as my starter. I like food with a bit of a kick, so went for the lobster milano – grilled lobster drizzled
with a light garlic, chilli, cream and seafood sauce, served with a timbale of spaghetti. I was given a special lobster ‘tool’ to get the meat out but was not sure if I was using it right, anyway the shell looked empty when I had finished – it was delicious! I followed this with a Herefordshire Angus rump with The Parrot’s renowned triple cooked chips, and a most refreshing Citrus Panna Cotta for dessert. My husband had the Carpaccio of Beef for starter, and our son had the Spanish King Prawns & Chorizo – the presentation of both was as beautiful as they tasted. They decided to share their main courses – Whole Lobster and 16oz T-bone steak – and described both as ‘awesome’. From the impressive selection of home made desserts, they chose Creme Brulee and Chocolate & Caramel Mousse – scrummy!
An array of choices on the menu Other features that made our evening a joy from start to finish included the attentive and accommodating attitude of the staff, especially helpful when you have such an array of choices on the menu and you don’t know what to pick! The venue itself is much more than your regular ‘pub’ – it’s spacious, yet warm, and the refurbished dining area is a pleasure to eat in. There’s no Juke Box or TV – just pleasant background music – and parking couldn’t be easier, the large Portland Street car park is just across the ‘one way system’ about a minute’s walk.

Time to vote!
By the time you read this column, it will only be a few days until polling day for the County Council elections on Thursday 2nd May. This year elections are for Gloucestershire County Council. These take place every four years, when all County Councillors are elected – as opposed to the City Council, which elects by thirds and holds elections three years out of four. So, in some ways, itʼs nice for me to have a “year off” – although Iʼm still out on the doorsteps campaigning for my County colleagues. While I think the City Council is more local, our budget of £16 million a year pales into insignificance against the County Councilʼs spending power of around £400 million per annum. The County Council deals with highways, social care, schools, the fire service, waste disposal and much more – all issues that really matter to us. The number of councillors from across Gloucestershire is being reduced from 63 to 53, which saves over £80,000 a year, but means that councillors have to cover bigger areas. The boundaries of all County Council divisions have changed, so if you have any queries about where to vote or which area you are in, please contact the City Councilʼs electoral services team on 01452 396203 or look on our website www.gloucester.gov.uk. I do hope we will have a decent turnout for these elections. The last time we went to the polls it was for the new Police and Crime Commissioner and turnout was poor. I also hope people will take into account local issues, rather than follow the national media focus of what is going on at Westminster. These elections arenʼt about welfare or immigration or Europe, important as all those issues are. They are about who is best to look after your local area and represent you on the County Council and who you trust to run the Council itself. I wouldnʼt be as presumptuous as to tell you who to vote for. My own allegiances are pretty well known. But I would encourage you to look closely at what candidates are offering and the track record of the incumbent if they are seeking re-election.
Delicious Dishes
Chocolate, Cherry & Walnut Brownies Ingredients: 200g/7oz unsalted butter 200g/7oz dark chocolate (I use Sainsbury’s ‘Basics’) 3 large eggs 300g/101⁄2 oz granulated sugar 2tsp vanilla extract 125g/41⁄2oz plain flour Pinch of salt 100g/31⁄2 oz dried cherries 100g/31⁄2 oz walnut pieces Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. 2 Grease and line a 20x30cm (8-12in) rectangular baking tin, 3-4cm (1-11⁄2 in) deep, with greaseproof or parchment paper. 3 Melt the butter and chocolate either in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or gently in the microwave. 4 With an electric whisk, beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract until they are thick and creamy. 5 Mix in the melted chocolate and butter.
6 Finally, stir in the flour, salt, cherries and walnuts. 7 Pour into baking tin and cook for about 25 minutes until the top is cracking and the centre is just set. 8 Leave to cool in the tin for about 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

Gloucester & Britainʼs first millionaire
Reputedly Britainʼs very first millionaire was James (Jemmy) Wood, proprietor of Gloucester Old Bank, founded in 1716, and which stood at No 22 Westgate Street. Wood took over this business, which had been founded by his grandfather, and ran it in conjunction with a drapery store which had belonged to his father, Richard. Born in 1756, after attending
D id y o u k n ow ?
Kingʼs School he took over the family businesses in 1792 and served as City Sheriff between 1811-1831, and was an alderman for a over a decade. He declined to become Mayor of the City because of the personal costs involved. He was well known for his extreme meanness. Always shabbily dressed, he would never use public transport, choosing to walk everywhere instead – even to outlying farms and lands that he owned. It is said that he would beg lifts from passing horse transport, once arriving home in the back of an empty hearse. Legend has it that Charles Dickens modelled the character “Scrooge” in A Christmas Carol on Jemmy Wood who, when he died in 1836, left an estate valued at over £900,000 or £50 million in todayʼs terms!

Three great party venues in one beautiful park Prinknash Bird and Deer Park is a wonderful environment for children to ‘get close to nature’. They may not completely register the beautiful, safe, tranquil surroundings, but they’ll certainly remember the joy of meeting and seeing the array of wildlife. The huge variety of peafowl plus the tame deer, reindeer and miniature donkeys are all very friendly – children adore feeding and petting them. It’s no surprise then that Prinknash is a superb location for children’s birthday parties, and there’s three wonderful bespoke ‘venues’ within the park available for bookings. ‘Teal’ and ‘Eider’ are both stunning Gypsy Caravans, and then there’s the terrific ‘Mad Hatter’s Marquee’. All three locations make the perfect place to host your child’s party with catering and stunning birthday cakes also available. For more details, or to book a fantastic fun day out for your child’s special birthday celebration, visit www.thebirdanddeerpark.com, call 01452 812727 or email enquiries@thebirdpark.com.

Ronan Keating and McFly Concerts WIN TICKETS!
McFly (l-r): Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter, Harry Judd and Danny Jones.
Gloucester Rugby are delighted to announce they will be hosting two music concerts this summer – kicking off with McFly on Thursday 13th June, followed by Ronan Keating on Friday 14th June. This will be the third consecutive year that Kingsholm has hosted music concerts outside of the rugby season, and follows on from last year’s sell out success with Tom Jones – continuing to add strength to the developing ‘Live at Kingsholm’ brand. McFly celebrate their tenth anniversary this year, have sold more than ten million records worldwide, and have a new album out this summer. Singer and songwriter Ronan Keating, who first came to prominence as a member of Boyzone, has sold an impressive 10 million copies of his 11 solo albums and has performed in fifty countries. The Irish singer has also duetted with the likes of LeAnn Rimes and LuLu, and recently launched his new solo album titled ‘Fires’ which he recorded in London and Dublin. Gloucester Rugby’s CEO, Stephen Vaughan spoke of his delight at confirming McFly and Ronan Keating in what will be two evenings of fantastic live music at Kingsholm Stadium: “We are really pleased to be building on the success of the two previous live concerts we’ve held at the stadium. The Wanted and Tom Jones were
both amazing events – Kingsholm has proved itself to be a terrific live music venue. “We think that, with McFly and Ronan Keating, we have secured two acts who will appeal to a broad cross section of music fans and hope to see Kingsholm rocking as it has in the past.” Tickets for both concerts are now on sale and are priced as follows: McFly Live at Kingsholm on Thursday 13th June 2013 (gates open 5.30pm) – £25 general admission, VIP £55. Ronan Keating Live at Kingsholm on Friday 14th June 2013 (gates open 5.30pm) – £30 general admission, VIP £60. Book online at www.liveatkingsholm.co.uk or www.ticketmaster.co.uk. Alternatively contact the Box Office direct on 0871 871 8781 option 2.

Gareths says: “We can cater for each individual’s home from our range of windows, doors and bi-folds – from a single replacement window to a complete house fitted with the latest wood effect finishes, no job is too small or too big.”
If you thought the style of your wooden windows couldn’t be matched with modern, maintenance free materials, then think again ...

They employ their own skilled fitters who will transform your bathroom in four to five days, and even take away all the rubbish and leave your home spotless. Even the highest quality bathroom furniture and sanitary ware won始t enhance your home if it始s fitted badly, which is why choosing who installs your new bathroom is just as important as choosing the bathroom suite. Severn Vale Bathrooms is a trustworthy, local family business that has been installing bathrooms in Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties for more than 20 years and can design the perfect bathroom solution, tailored specifically to meet your needs. Severn Vale Bathrooms do not use subcontractors, having instead an in-house team of highly skilled professional fitters. A team will be assigned specifically to each installation to ensure it is completed with as little upheaval as possible, within four to five consecutive days (based on a typical bathroom installation). Severn Vale fitters are polite and professional and work in a clean and tidy manner. They will ensure that all rubbish is removed at the end of each day, so that your home is left as you like it. Remember that you will live with - and use, your new bathroom every day for many years after it is completed, so getting the design right to meet your needs and preferences is of critical importance. That始s why Severn Vale design high quality CAD drawings, providing you with a guide to how your new bathroom will look before a move is made. Over the years, Severn Vale has evolved solutions for every corner of the bathroom, from the ceiling to the floor, as little or as much as you feel is right for you, using reliable tried-and-tested products which will stand the test of time. This is particularly important if you, or someone in your family, has a disability. From a simple grab rail, to a low-level, easy-access shower cubicle, a broad range of unobtrusive mobility solutions is available.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

This spring has come so late that everything will be in a rush to catch up! I read an article that said if the soil hadn’t warmed up enough to get some vegetable seeds in by midApril the farmers would be facing lots of problems with insufficient time for them to take advantage of the optimum levels of light to grow before the days start to shorten again! As I write this in April the weather has finally given us a taster of spring – the cherry trees are on the verge of bursting into blossom, albeit a good month later than usual. Now you will probably have a very well weeded garden if you have taken any notice at all of my columns in the last couple of months! This will really benefit you from this month onwards as things zoom into growth. Tidy up spring flowering plants such as Helleborus x hybridus (deadhead if you don’t want them to seed), Pulmonaria (cut off all the tatty leaves and old flowerheads) and Euphorbia polychroma and E. Griffithii (shear off the top third of the plant to keep it deadheaded and a nice shape). You should be able to start hardening off tender herbaceous plants which you may have bought in the tempting indoor displays in the garden centres and nurseries. This consists of a couple of weeks of taking them outside during the day, and popping them back into the greenhouse or conservatory at night – gradually leaving them for longer and longer until they are out all night. Keep an eye on the weather in case of frosts etc. (although goodness knows we really shouldn’t get any this late on!). You can make a cold frame out of old windows, Perspex off-cuts etc., and place in a warm sheltered spot. Raise the lid in the day to circulate the air and cover over at night if you have no greenhouse. Sow some runner beans as the soil warms up, making a wigwam of bamboo canes for the beans to twine up. The cultivar ‘White Lady’ is very pretty if you fancy white flowers for a change. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design, do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

Money Matters with Roger Downes
Switch it off
When my children were young, I always remember my Mum telling me about how to control the amount of television they watched, and what they saw, by operating the best form of censorship – the ʻoffʼ switch – which also saved money! Twenty years or so on and the phenomenon is different, but the players are all the same. Now itʼs not television – although believe me, my grown up children remain capable of argument over that issue still – itʼs mobile phones, ipads and the like. There are many good things about the technology revolution and Iʼm not a dinosaur campaigning for the return of an age past. But our constant craving for immediate contact with someone elsewhere, and our need to have answers to everything literally at our fingertips, comes at a social cost – on top of the vast sums spent ʻkeeping upʼ with the latest devices. I read recently some amazing statistics about internet and social networking usage. Do you know how many times the ʻLikeʼ button is clicked on Facebook? Apparently itʼs a staggering 2.7 billion times per day. Mindblowing! A billion search requests on Google, 110 million Tweets and 250 million photo uploads on Facebook – again daily. Burnout from business usage of these devices is a real threat, so if we want to live long enough to see what the next decade brings from the technology revolution, perhaps we should listen to my Mumʼs advice. Thereʼs always an ʻoffʼ switch you can use! Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing Dear Readers, I hope you are all well and survived the school holidays! I have been setting up a new Task Force over that past few months to deal with “Gang Related” activity across Gloucester City, and the ‘Avenger Task Force’ (ATF) was launched on Monday 8th April. I am very keen to gain as much support and information from our local communities – it will help us to offer as much support as we possibly can to young people involved in this type of behaviour. You can access our secure email address via Gloucestershire Constabularies website – the email address is ATF@Gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk. The few paragraphs below lay out what we are aiming to achieve, and what we deem a “Gang” to be – please help support young people involved in this to make good choices to stop this activity: Aim of the Avenger Task Force (ATF) To identify and support vulnerable people and communities who are, or who may be, involved in or affected by gang related activities within Gloucester City & District. Objectives of the Avenger Task Force (ATF) • Identify adults, young persons and communities involved in gang related activity. • Identify adults, young persons and communities vulnerable to gang related activity. • Engage and assess identified adults, young persons and communities to determine levels of intervention and support. • Share information and intelligence with Partner Agencies. • Carry out interventions to support individuals and communities. • Carry out diversionary activities to support individuals and communities. • Reduce individuals’ and communities’ associations with gang activity. • Disruption of gang related activities across Gloucester City. It will be a great event for all the family with police dog displays, obedience and agility displays, novelty dog show, ‘Increase the Peace’ singing and dancing, dog grooming tips, face painting and bouncy castles. Last year the sun shone and we had a fantastic day. We are hoping for a repeat this year, so come along with your families and dogs for a lot of fun. I’m hoping my black Labrador ‘Scooby’ will win the ‘Most Handsome Male’ in the dog show! For more information check out www.Safergloucester.co.uk.
