Remembrance Day is on Sunday 10th November. Inside this month’s magazine there are plenty of ideas to entertain the whole family. Among them is the fantastic firework display at the ever popular Burley Fields Lakes with disco roadshow, pig roast and small fun fair. Thanks for spotting our Get involved ‘deliberate mistake’! Let us have I’d like to be able to claim that an error in Withington and our October issue was a ‘deliberate Our front cover this month shows a delightful landmark in the village of Withington – a stone crocodile head which jets water into a trough all year round. It was created in Victorian times and recently renovated by local a stonemason. Withington is a small Cotswold The Local village between Cheltenham and Cirencester straddling the River Coln. On the west bank of Withington the village rises, encompassing the manor house and the Grade I listed church of St Michael and All Angels which dates back to the 12th Century. In 2006 an archaeological dig was conducted in the village and televised by Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ programme. A family of moles had uncovered pieces of mosaic which were then noticed by local archaeologist Roger Box who called in the Time Team to investigate. They spent three days digging the site and uncovered a previously unknown Roman Villa. Just downsteam from the crocodile is Fossebridge – a pretty hamlet with four acres of gardens and a lake. Why not visit the crocodile and then take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Chedworth Woods – see this month’s ‘Short Walk’ on the next page. You could then, perhaps, warm yourself up and indulge in a superb lunch and refreshments at The Inn at Fossebridge – a charming 17th century coaching inn with a cosy bar and log fires. mistake’ but, unfortunately, it was down to ‘human error’. We were very pleased with the front cover, displaying a wonderful country curiosity – a stone crocodile head water feature. Unfortunately, in the related article inside the magazine, we said the crocodile was located at Withington – not it’s actual home at Compton Abdale. Given that we pride ourselves on the accuracy and presentation of The Local Answer, we are disappointed to have made such an error. We are particularly annoyed to have upset some of our readers who were unable to find the crocodile at Withington! On a positive note, we had numerous people call in or email to advise us that we’d made a mistake – and many of you took the time to tell us how you ‘loved’ the magazine. For anyone who was in the slightest way ‘put out’ by our error, please accept sincere apologies from The Local Answer.

Cheltenham’s Service of Remembrance The war memorial in Cheltenham’s Long Gardens, Promenade, (right) will once again be the centrepiece for the town’s service of remembrance and civic parade which takes place on Sunday 10th November – commencing at 10.55am. This important annual event is organised by the borough council. The Mayor, Councillor Wendy Flynn, will lead the town in the act of remembrance and invites all members of the community to attend in order to honour the brave men and women of Cheltenham and beyond who have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of us all. A lone trumpeter will play ‘The Last Post’ before two minutes of silence at 11am. After the Reveille, the service continues with prayers, hymns and the national anthem – played by Gloucestershire Police Band. The Mayor will lay the first wreath at the war memorial followed by other civic dignitaries, including borough and county councillors, and representatives from local organisations. After the wreaths have been laid, the civic party

will watch from the steps of the Municipal Offices as Cheltenham Silver Band leads the march past. Taking part will be the Cheltenham branch of the Royal British Legion, Cheltenham Royal Naval Association, Joint Services Support Unit, 2624 Sqn Royal Aux (RAF Brize), Old Comrades and RBL Bikers. Also attending will be

detachments from the naval, army and RAF cadets, and patrols from local scouts, as well as riders from ‘Ride til we Rot’. For further information on the service please contact Jennie Ingram – telephone 01242 264108 or email jennie.ingram@cheltenham.gov.uk.

Remembrance Day and the symbolic poppy Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Sunday or Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in countries of the British Commonwealth of nations since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. The term ‘Armistice’ means a cessation of hostilities as a prelude to peace negotiations. In the context of the first world war ‘the armistice’ generally refers to the agreement between the Germans and the Allies to end the war on 11th November 1918. This was by no means the only armistice of the war, however the most significant was signed at 5am on the morning of 11 November 1918 and came into effect six hours later at 11am – hence the quote ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. The day was specifically dedicated by King George V on 7 November 1919 as a day of remembrance for

The Local Answer

members of the armed forces who were killed during World War I. The initial ‘Armistice Day’ was held at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honour of The President of the French Republic” during the evening hours of 10th November 1919. The first ‘official’ Armistice Day was held on the grounds of Buckingham Palace the following morning. After World War II the name was changed to ‘Remembrance Day’ or ‘Remembrance Sunday’ and, beginning in 1939 in the UK, the two-minute silence was moved to the Sunday nearest to 11th November in order not to interfere with wartime production should 11th November fall on a weekday. The remembrance poppy has been used since 1920 to commemorate soldiers who have died in war. The use of the poppy was inspired by John McCrae’s World War poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers’ graves in Flanders – their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Delicious Dishes

Leek and Cheddar Tart

Ingredients: 650g/1lb 7oz potatoes; 3 medium size leeks (about 740g/1lb 10oz); 50g/2oz butter; 1x 200g tub low fat creme fraiche; 175g/6oz cheddar, grated; ground or freshly grated nutmeg; 2 x 375g packs ready-rolled puff pastry; beaten egg, for glazing. Method: 1 Pre-heat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. 2 Bring a large pan of water to the boil. Peel the potatoes, cut them into slices as thick as a pound coin. Salt the boiling water, add the potatoes and let them simmer until tender – they can be almost falling apart. Drain and tip into a large mixing bowl. 3 Meanwhile, remove and discard the greenest part of the leeks. Slice the rest into rings, then rinse under running water. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the leeks. Cover and leave to cook over a low heat until thoroughly tender – this will take a good 20 minutes. Add the leeks to the potatoes, then add the creme fraiche and cheddar. Season with salt, black

A wonderfully tasty meal in itself – suitable for vegetarians pepper and plenty of nutmeg (you may think this won’t work, but it really makes the dish). 4 Unroll one of the packs of pastry on to a non-stick baking sheet. Pile the filling in the centre, then brush the edges with the beaten egg. Unroll the second piece of pastry over the top and press the edges down to seal. Brush with beaten egg, then cut equally placed slits across the width of the pastry top. 5 Bake until the pastry is crisp and golden – 40-45 minutes.

Short Walks in The Cotswolds

1 Stanton owes much of its restoration to the architect, Sir Philip Stott, who bought the estate in 1906. He spent 30 years restoring the village and, after his death, the council continued in the same manner by constructing houses in the traditional style. The houses were constructed between the late 16th and mid 17th centuries, some having their dates carved into the lintels – 1604, 1615, 1618. They display all the classic features of the Cotswold style with their drip moulds, stone mullions, and dormer windows. The church is 12th to 15th century and has strong links with John Wesley, the 18th century cleric who preached regularly from Stanton and the surrounding area. Inside there is a rare 14th century wooden pulpit, and the pew ends bear gouge marks made by the ropes attached to the sheepdogs that accompanied shepherds to church.

A Use the car park next to the cricket pitch in Stanton. Turn right out of the car park and, at the junction, turn left and walk as far as the fork near Pear Tree Cottage and the Stott Lantern. 2 The hill fort at Shenberrow lies at over 900ft (275m) and commands a good view over the vale. It was built during the Iron Age some time between 700–150BC although, being of bivallate (double ramparts) structure, it probably dates from the later end of the period. It originally covered about 3 acres (1.25ha), and is one of many hill forts located on the edge of the escarpment.

3 Stanway House is a fine Jacobean building built by Sir Paul Tracy early in the 17th century. Extensive modifications made in the 19th and 20th centuries were removed in 1948, and much of the present building is original. Surrounding the house are one of England’s finest water gardens, created in the 1720s and since restored. As well as ponds and a formal canal there is the striking 300ft (91m) high single-jet fountain – the tallest in Britain – which was added in 2004. Past occupants of the house include Dr Thomas Dover. He was known for his mercury-based medicines but is chiefly remembered as the rescuer of Alexander Selkirk – with the literary identity of Robinson Crusoe – from the island of Juan Fernandez in 1708.

4 This rather unusual, thatched, cricket pavilion was given to the village by J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan and visitor to Stanway House in the 1920s.

G Go through two gates and follow the waymarks through the parkland and the fields to a gate before the buildings. Turn left to the road and then turn right. At the junction turn left back to the car.

Gloucestershire Animal Welfare Association & Cheltenham Animal Shelter

Hello my name is Wilbur. I am a tabby and white male cat aged approximately 1 year. Despite my youthful age, I am looking for a home without children. I do like a good fuss, but only when I'm in the mood as I consider myself to be quite an independent chap. My ideal home would be in a rural area – possibly on a farm/stables as I’m pretty sure I’d be a good pest controller. Please come in to the Shelter and pay me a visit if you feel you could offer me the new loving home I deserve. I’m neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. I've also been wormed and flea treated and will come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. If you feel you could give me the environment I need, please get in touch (details below) – I’d be extremely grateful!

Obesity: Cuddly cats and chunky canines Everywhere in the news we are told about the obesity epidemic that is affecting us humans, but spare a thought for our four-legged friends. Various estimates have put figures of between 30-50% of pets being overweight, while at the same time studies have shown that only 10% of pet owners think their pets are heavier than they should be. When I recently came back from an extended trip to Australia I discovered my cat, Marley, had ballooned from a reasonable 5kgs to a hefty 8kgs of feline blubber! Marley had always had a persistent habit of requesting food on demand, but it seems he had been making rather too good a use of my absence. Over the next 12 months – on a very strict low calorie diet – I got him back to his reasonably svelte figure, but it was a sobering reminder to me how easy it is to let a pet get seriously chunky. Almost on a daily basis owners ask me if their pets are overweight, or complain that they can’t possibly feed Fido/Fluffy any less. Neutering regularly gets blamed for causing weight gain and, while it's true some pets are more chilled out after neutering, studies have shown that spaying or castrating has no effect on the metabolism of dogs or cats. If they gain weight after neutering it’s because they are less active or eating more, both of which we as pet owners can control. Overweight pets suffer from more joint damage and arthritis, stomach problems, poor coats, back disease, diabetes, liver disease and much more.

Tips to help with your pets weight

CHARLTON KINGS VET CENTRE OPEN MONDAY-FRIDAY 9AM-6.30PM DRAGON VET CENTRE OPEN SATURDAY 9AM-12 NOON 24 HOUR EMERGENCY ~ 01242 522022 Charlton Kings Vet Centre in affiliation with

Regular exercise is vital for a pets health. Regardless of size, dogs need at least an hour of exercise a day – preferably off the lead. If your pet is less active or older, feed a lower calorie, senior or neutered pet diet. Get active with your pet – even cats enjoy playing with toys. Don’t under estimate the extra calories in dog and cat treats! A handful of dog treats is like us eating a packet of biscuits or bag of crisps. Use carrots, veg or low calorie treats instead. If you are still struggling with your pet’s weight, most vet practices run free weight clinics where special diets and advice are available. Dr Oliver Wilkinson BVSc MRCVS

It’s never too early to book your panto tickets!

Start the New Year with a laugh! For 2014 Promenade Productions, Cheltenham’s popular ‘panto provider’ have chosen a show which is a little different from the traditional pantomimes, but comes with more than its fair share of mayhem and merriment! Follow the legendary Robin Hood, as he battles the evil Sheriff of Nottingham to free the land from tyranny. Robin is, of course, aided by his merry men – Little John, Friar Tuck, Alan a Dale, to name but a few – while the evil Sheriff is hindered by his hilariously idiotic henchmen and a Soothsayer who fails miserably in her attempts to foretell the future in her crystal ball. Both Robin and the Sheriff are distracted by the beauty of Maid Marian whose nanny, Nora Tittle Tattle, adds even more hilarity to this highly entertaining pantomime. Loads of laughs, stunning sets, fabulous costumes, great dance routines, a large cast and lots of audience participation – a great night out! See you in Sherwood Forest! The panto runs from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th January 2014 at the Bacon Theatre – 7pm daily plus matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. Ticket prices £8-£14 and a Family of Four can share the fun for just £30 on Wednesday and Thursday performances – a great Christmas gift! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire [12A] A change of rules leads to an even deadlier death match in this blazing sequel to the global blockbuster. At the end of ‘The Hunger Games’, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) made a suicide pact with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). This forced Panem’s President Snow (Donald Sutherland) to back down. Now Snow is determined to regain the upper hand. Since Katniss has become a beacon of hope to the impoverished people of District 12, he begins by deviously manipulating public opinion against her. But he then realises that other winners pose a similar threat in their own districts. So when the 75th annual Hunger Games are announced, there’s a rule change to make this the most brutal fight to the death ever! Only previous victors can compete, which means Katniss’s ordeal has only just begun. This second film adapted from Suzanne Collins’s bestselling trilogy continues the incredible story of one of modern cinema’s most compelling heroines. 8 NOVEMBER

Gravity [12A] Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are cast adrift in space in this intense 3D sci-fi thriller! Medical engineer Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is on her very first mission aboard the space shuttle Explore. Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), who’s on his final flight before retiring. But a seemingly routine spacewalk 372 miles above the Earth ends in disaster when satellite debris ploughs into the shuttle. The impact catapults Stone and Kowalsky into the unforgiving blackness. An eerie silence tells them they have also lost contact with NASA altogether. With a finite supply of oxygen, their prospects seem bleak. But panic and fear gives way to a realisation that their only hope of survival is to work together and travel further into deep space. ‘Children of Men’ director Alfonso Cuaron returns to sci-fi with this palm-moistening survival thriller, brilliantly shot in immersive 3D. 8 NOVEMBER

Last Vegas [12A] Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman star in a riotous sixtysomething bachelor party comedy! Billy (Michael Douglas) has always been happily single. So Billy calls childhood friends Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) with a plan. They’re going back to Las Vegas together to party like it’s 1959! Trouble is, Archie is not in the best of health these days. What’s more, when the ageing quartet arrive in Las Vegas, they find their old haunts have changed out of all recognition since they were young. Unresolved issues between them soon bubble to the surface too. ‘National Treasure’ director Jon Turteltaub’s brilliantly cast comedy brings together four Oscar-winning screen legends for a feast of senior misbehaviour!

During the day there will be plenty of fun throughout the town centre. The Christmas parade starts at Beechwood from around 5pm then works its way down the High St past Regent Arcade then on to The Brewery.

Saturday 23rd November From 3 – 8pm

The Brewery is hosting the town centre Christmas lights switchon once more, with a feast of entertainment from local musicians, dancers and singers. At The Brewery from 35pm will be a warm up show with school choirs and dancing from Anneli, Coady Crew and Danceworks. The Band of the Gloucestershire Constabulary will continue in the festive spirit with Christmas tunes, while Cheltenham Samba heat things up with a lively drumming show. The main event starts from 5pm, including everyoneʼs favourite band the Chip Shop Boys, who promise to have the crowds dancing to their popular covers. Carol singers, panto characters and Breeze fm will get us into the Christmas spirit until the town centre parade arrives with Santa to switch on the lights at around 6pm. Following the switch-on, more local acts will entertain the crowds until 8pm. Expect plenty of festive music, traditional family entertainment and guaranteed snow! *Please note, this event may not be suitable for younger children/pushchairs due to the crowd numbers; however little ones can enjoy the warm-up show from 3pm! The switch-on time is subject to change so we advise customers to arrive early, as numbers are limited and to book tables (eating guests only) in advance.

Everyone loves a curry – after all, it is Britain’s national dish! Broadcaster, writer and Celebrity Masterchef finalist, Hardeep Singh Kohli, is on a mission to find the best Indian takeaway in the UK – and he brings his ‘Indian Takeaway’ show to the Bacon Theatre on Saturday 16th November at 7.30pm. This is his third national tour, following two sell-out years on the road and at the Edinburgh Festival, and promises a hilarious evening of cooking live on stage. Hardeep will order a takeaway at the start of the show, having selected one from audience suggestions submitted via HardeepLive.com. He will then race against the clock to cook his own sumptuous feast before the takeaway arrives. Along the way he’ll be sharing recipe tips, anecdotes and wonderful stories of his shared Scottish and Indian heritage. The show culminates with some lucky audience members coming on stage to sample both meals – so make sure you book early for a good seat to be first in the queue! Tickets cost just ÂŁ16 or ÂŁ14 for concessions and may be booked online at www.bacontheatre.co.uk or by calling the box office on 01242 258002. WIN A FREE Did you know?

MOWER SERVICE!

Graham Bendall (above) has been looking after lawnmowers for Gloucestershire residents over the last 30 years. He has kindly given us a free service (up to the value of £75) for one lucky reader to win. Now operating from his workshop in Churchdown, he continues to service and repair mowers from all over the county – ordinarily picking them up and returning to his workshop where all the necessary tools and equipment are at hand. Graham services and repairs all types of mower, including electric models, and also sharpens blades – which can get chipped over time. In the case of petrol mowers, he says: “It’s better to service and clean equipment before storing during the winter. However, if you’re going to leave your mower in the shed before getting it serviced in the spring, be sure to clean every blade of grass off – wet or dry – to avoid corosion”. Why not give Graham a call and book your mower in for a service now – before you forget! To enter our draw to win a lawnmower service up to the value of £75, just send your name, address and telephone number to Mower, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Cheltenham, GL53 9QS. Alternatively, email details to competitions@thelocalanswer.co.uk – please state ‘Mower’ in the subject line. Closing date: Wednesday 13th November 2013.

The origins of the lawnmower Edwin Beard Budding was a mechanic – building and repairing machinery for the textile mills of the Stroud valleys. He got the idea of the lawnmower after seeing a machine in a local cloth mill which used a cutting cylinder mounted on a bench to trim the irregular nap from the surface of woollen cloth and give a smooth finish. He realised that a similar device could be used to cut grass if the mechanism was mounted in a wheeled frame to make the blades rotate close to the lawn’s surface. It's rumoured that Budding tested his grass cutting prototype at night to avoid curiosity and ridicule from his neighbours. The first machine produced was 19 inches wide with a frame made of wrought iron. The mower was pushed from behind with the motive power coming from the rear land roller which drove gears to transfer the drive to the knives on the cutting cylinder. There was another roller placed in between the cutting cylinder and the land roller which was adjustable to alter the height of cut. On cutting, the grass clippings were hurled forward into a tray like box. It was soon realised, however, that an extra handle was needed in front of the machine which could be used to help pull it along. Two of the earliest Budding machines sold went to Regent’s Park Zoological Gardens in London and the Oxford Colleges. Budding entered into partnership with local engineer John Ferrabee in May 1830 – Ferrabee paid the costs of development, obtained letters of patent and acquired rights to manufacture, sell and license other manufacturers in the production of lawn mowers. Budding’s mower was designed primarily to cut the lawn on sports grounds and extensive gardens, as a superior alternative to the scythe, and was granted a British patent on 31 August 1830. It took ten more years and further innovations to create a machine that could be worked by animals, and sixty years before a steam-powered lawn mower was built. Ferrabee and Budding made the mowers in a factory at Thrupp Mill near Stroud. In 1851 it became the Phoenix Ironworks and produced cloth making machines, water wheels, agricultural machinery and steam engines as well as lawnmowers. By 1862 the company was making eight models of lawnmower in various sizes and had produced over 5,000 machines before production ceased in 1863. Budding also invented the “screw” system on an adjustable spanner!

In t he G arden with Julia Smith

The Autumn garden has looked really good this year; I don’t know why – perhaps it was the wet spring and long hot summer, but my borders were really beautiful in October and the Michaelmas daisies and Sedums looked particularly fine with tones of purple and pink and flowered on and on. November is a good month to look back at your garden over the summer and to perhaps decide you would like to change some aspects of it. We are not talking necessarily about a complete garden makeover, but even the best gardens need reworking as the years go on. Perhaps a border is getting too congested, maybe the garden looks stunning in spring and then fizzles out becoming boring for the rest of the year, or the winter garden has no redeeming features – all these can be rectified. As with all things, plants have a shelf life and sometimes they just have grown too old and are past their best (tell me about it!). You have to be quite strong minded to say “this shrub looks horrible, it does nothing for the garden. I know it looked lovely 6 years ago, but it must come out!” Sometimes it needs someone else to come in and look at your garden with a fresh eye. If shrubs such as Cotinus (smoke bush) have become too large they can be cut back now by a third providing the weather is still mild, and this will produce a more compact shrub next year. Prune blackcurrants now – removing 2 or 3 of the oldest branches down to the base. You can take cuttings really easily from blackcurrant bushes by cutting some healthy 25cm long shoots which have formed this year (make a slanted cut at the bottom so you know which way up they go!) and simply sticking them in the ground – it really is that easy. Growing soft fruit is very easy and less timeconsuming than growing some of the vegetable varieties. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Money Matters

Surviving a downturn in the economy doesn’t just mean making it through a recession. It means managing the first signs of growth too. Despite the last few years being the worst economic period in living memory, the number of businesses suffering formal insolvency proceedings is well short of the levels seen in previous recessions. So have all those surviving businesses weathered the storm and have a solid platform on which to build in the good times, or have they scraped by and are ill-equipped to cope with growth? In these circumstances, cash is king. You have survived, but have you got the cash reserves to allow you to take on more staff, invest in equipment or purchase stock? If you are managing cash, make sure you don’t work for nothing. There is no substitute for good credit control. You couldn’t walk out of a shop without paying for the goods (well, not legally at least), so why allow business customers to get away without settling their debt? Think about invoicing in advance or in instalments as the work is done. It’s no good assuming that the banks will lend you the money. They might – for the right proposition – but there is no substitute for a properly capitalised business that generates and retains reserves to invest in its future. Planning is vital too. Managing cash flow means knowing what your costs and income are likely to be. I see too many firms who don’t budget or plan cash flow. Their chances of managing the upswing are not as strong as those who do. Roger Downes FCA – Managing Director

NEW OR SECOND HAND car and need help to get the right vehicle at the right price –

LET US HELP YOU! We provide a

BESPOKE SERVICE to ensure our Customers enjoy

PEACE OF MIND For a service tailored to your specific needs, please contact Paul Montagu –

The Deal Maker 01452 303850 07960 535876 paul@dmnw.co.uk www.dmnw.co.uk

Professional help at hand Cars have been a passion for Paul Montagu (pictured right) of The Deal Maker Nationwide for many years. From a young age he has worked in the car sales sector for various franchises, progressing from sales to leadership level – and now he’s using all his knowledge of cars and negotiation skills to help the public. The service Paul provides is, essentially, to give peace of mind to those of us – ladies and gents – who are not entirely comfortable when it comes to selecting the right vehicle or service, including finance packages and ‘add on’ products. He’ll also help with negotiations to help ensure you don’t pay an excessive sum for goods and services. Aside from buying their own home, purchasing a new or second hand car may be the largest outlay of cash most people are faced with, so avoiding costly ‘pitfalls’ is important. Paul said: “Both private and group dealerships have enjoyed an enormous amount of power when it comes to negotiating due to their knowledge of the inner workings of the environment. So I started to think! Wouldn’t it be great if I could apply my sales and industry knowledge to benefit the public – taking away the uncertainty and pressure.” Everyone’s requirements are unique, so Paul will tailor his charges accordingly depending on the service you require. This can be an hourly rate or a ‘one off’ set fee, and there are never any hidden extras! For full details of the many associated services Paul can provide, why not give him a call or visit his website (see left).

NO JOB TOO SMALL

Help us to help you! As we move into the darker evenings please help us to help you in not becoming a victim of crime. Keep your doors and windows locked, get a light timer to give the impression of occupancy, and keep your valuables hidden from view in your locked car. You would be surprised as to how many crimes get reported from people who have “no idea how they got in”. On the odd occasion some of our thieves find sophisticated ways of getting inside locked cars and houses, but believe me when I say that the vast majority of our local criminals are not the brightest and earn their ill gotten gains by wandering around housing estates looking for easy pickings – such as a satnav in an unlocked car! Your insurance company Tim Waterhouse also knows this and you may have a Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector problem in getting a ‘pay out’ if they suspect owner negligence – sorry, but that is the way of things so please don’t make it easy for thieves. As we come towards the end of the year I think it might be worthwhile to tell you about some of the things we have been doing to help promote peace and good order, and to reduce crime. We have also been listening, and try and respond accordingly: ● You asked to see us more – We have increased patrols in high footfall areas and have introduced a weekly surgery outside M&S in the High Street, plus bi-weekly surgeries in the suburbs. We have also dedicated an officer to the new Charlton Kings Parish Council building in Church Piece and thank the Parish Council for giving us the opportunity. I also get out and about at the surgeries in addition to my own dedicated quarterly surgery where you can come and see my team and I. The last one was at The Pavilion in Hatherley Lane. ● You asked us to do something about the ATM frauds – We have a dedicated team on this matter and many arrests and convictions have followed as you would have heard and seen in the local press. ● You asked us to sort out the anti social behaviour in the Lower High Street – Our days of action and dispersal order has reduced matters considerably. ● You ask us to target drug dealing – We do, and will continue to do so. A recent arrest of two individuals and thousands of pounds worth of cannabis showed our drive to combat the criminality behind the drugs. They will be sentenced soon enough. I hope you continue to tell us about the issues you have, and give us an opportunity to try and resolve them. Your local team is determined to keep helping our community and targeting criminals.
