The Local Answer
Gloucester remembers People of Gloucester and the surrounding area will come together during November to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of us all. On Sunday 10th November the city’s Service of Rememberance, organised by the Gloucester branch of the Royal British Legion will see civic dignitaries, representatives of local organisations and the public placing wreaths and poppy crosses at the War Memorial in Gloucester Park. Chairman of Gloucester City Royal British Legion, Garry Mills, is keen for as many people to attend as possible. He said: “This is such an important event for the whole community. We all benefit today from sacrifices made by so many service men and women throughout the last century and in recent times too.” Garry asks for everyone attending to be in the park by 10.30am – the service will commence promptly at 10.48am and will include music from the Salvation Army Band before and after the two minutes silence observed at 11am. If you would like to mark the occasion by placing a wreath or poppy cross, they will be available at Eastgate Mall for two weeks prior.
Gloucester City Council Leader Paul James also encourages a strong show of support: “With its long and proud military history, Remembrance Day is always poignant and very moving for people in Gloucester. Recent conflicts really bring home the sacrifices our armed forces have made and continue to make. The numbers of people attending the Remembrance Services have grown in recent years from across all communities, reflecting the way in which we are all touched by these events. I would encourage people from across the city to come together to mark this special day.” Later in the day a service will be conducted at Gloucester Cathedral at 3pm
(please be seated by 2.40pm), followed by a parade from the Cathedral to Gloucester Guildhall at approximately 4pm involving members of the Royal Naval Reserves from HMS Flying Fox, the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Support Battalion, Royal Air Force Reserves, Veterans, Royal British Legion and others. Other events of remembrance around the city are: Sunday 3rd November – Festival of Remembrance at GL1 Leisure Centre (7.30pm); Sunday 10th November – Morning Observances at Tredworth Cemeteries (from 10.10am); Monday 11th November – Two minute silence in Eastgate Mall (11.00am).
Remembrance Day and the symbolic poppy Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Sunday or Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in countries of the British Commonwealth of nations since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. The term ‘Armistice’ means a cessation of hostilities as a prelude to peace negotiations. In the context of the first world war ‘the armistice’ generally refers to the agreement between the Germans and the Allies to end the war on 11th November 1918. This was by no means the only armistice of the war, however the most significant was signed at 5am on the morning of 11 November 1918 and came into effect six hours later at 11am – hence the quote ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. The day was specifically dedicated by King George V on 7 November 1919 as a day of remembrance for members of the armed forces who were killed during
The Local Answer
World War I. The initial ‘Armistice Day’ was held at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honour of The President of the French Republic” during the evening hours of 10th November 1919. The first ‘official’ Armistice Day was held on the grounds of Buckingham Palace the following morning. After World War II the name was changed to ‘Remembrance Day’ or ‘Remembrance Sunday’ and, beginning in 1939 in the UK, the twominute silence was moved to the Sunday nearest to 11th November in order not to interfere with wartime production should 11th November fall on a weekday. The remembrance poppy has been used since 1920 to commemorate soldiers who have died in war. The use of the poppy was inspired by John McCrae’s World War poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers’ graves in Flanders – their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Delicious Dishes
Leek and Cheddar Tart
Ingredients: 650g/1lb 7oz potatoes; 3 medium size leeks (about 740g/1lb 10oz); 50g/2oz butter; 1x 200g tub low fat creme fraiche; 175g/6oz cheddar, grated; ground or freshly grated nutmeg; 2 x 375g packs ready-rolled puff pastry; beaten egg, for glazing. Method: 1 Pre-heat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. 2 Bring a large pan of water to the boil. Peel the potatoes, cut them into slices as thick as a pound coin. Salt the boiling water, add the potatoes and let them simmer until tender – they can be almost falling apart. Drain and tip into a large mixing bowl. 3 Meanwhile, remove and discard the greenest part of the leeks. Slice the rest into rings, then rinse under running water. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the leeks. Cover and leave to cook over a low heat until thoroughly tender – this will take a good 20 minutes. Add the leeks to the potatoes, then add the creme fraiche and cheddar. Season with salt, black
AWARD WINNING BEERS
A wonderfully tasty meal in itself – suitable for vegetarians pepper and plenty of nutmeg (you may think this won’t work, but it really makes the dish). 4 Unroll one of the packs of pastry on to a non-stick baking sheet. Pile the filling in the centre, then brush the edges with the beaten egg. Unroll the second piece of pastry over the top and press the edges down to seal. Brush with beaten egg, then cut equally placed slits across the width of the pastry top. 5 Bake until the pastry is crisp and golden – 40-45 minutes.

1 Stanton owes much of its restoration to the architect, Sir Philip Stott, who bought the estate in 1906. He spent 30 years restoring the village and, after his death, the council continued in the same manner by constructing houses in the traditional style. The houses were constructed between the late 16th and mid 17th centuries, some having their dates carved into the lintels – 1604, 1615, 1618. They display all the classic features of the Cotswold style with their drip moulds, stone mullions, and dormer windows. The church is 12th to 15th century and has strong links with John Wesley, the 18th century cleric who preached regularly from Stanton and the surrounding area. Inside there is a rare 14th century wooden pulpit, and the pew ends bear gouge marks made by the ropes attached to the sheepdogs that accompanied shepherds to church.

2 The hill fort at Shenberrow lies at over 900ft (275m) and commands a good view over the vale. It was built during the Iron Age some time between 700–150BC although, being of bivallate (double ramparts) structure, it probably dates from the later end of the period. It originally covered about 3 acres (1.25ha), and is one of many hill forts located on the edge of the escarpment.

3 Stanway House is a fine Jacobean building built by Sir Paul Tracy early in the 17th century. Extensive modifications made in the 19th and 20th centuries were removed in 1948, and much of the present building is original. Surrounding the house are one of England’s finest water gardens, created in the 1720s and since restored. As well as ponds and a formal canal there is the striking 300ft (91m) high single-jet fountain – the tallest in Britain – which was added in 2004. Past occupants of the house include Dr Thomas Dover. He was known for his mercury-based medicines but is chiefly remembered as the rescuer of Alexander Selkirk – with the literary identity of Robinson Crusoe – from the island of Juan Fernandez in 1708.
4 This rather unusual, thatched, cricket pavilion was given to the village by J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan and visitor to Stanway House in the 1920s.
G Go through two gates and follow the waymarks through the parkland and the fields to a gate before the buildings. Turn left to the road and then turn right. At the junction turn left back to the car.

HEALTH & Should Gloucester have more statues? BEAUTY Leader of Gloucester City Council
On my recent holiday, touring around some of Europe’s great cities, I noticed that these destinations had streets and squares adorned with statues – and plenty of them. Rome was probably the most plentiful, but even smaller cities like Naples weren’t short of them, although their maintenance left something to be desired! To be honest, they do add to the character of these places. In Gloucester, we’re a bit lacking in this regard. We’ve got the once controversial Aircraft Worker statue in Northgate Street by the Oxebode and Emperor Nerva – whose statue I also saw in Rome – on horseback in Southgate Street (below).

The Bowen Technique
Slightly out of the centre we have the Robert Raikes statue in Gloucester Park (a copy of the original in Victoria Embankment Gardens in London), Queen Anne by the Spa Cricket Ground and Charles II in St Mary’s Square, although the latter two are in pretty poor condition. Plans by the Civic Trust for a statue of Colonel Massey, commander of Parliamentarian forces during the Siege of Gloucester, have fallen by the wayside for the time being at least. There were recent calls from the family of legendary Gloucester boxer Hal Bagwell for a statue of him in the city centre, but given that Emperor Nerva was only put in place a little over a decade ago, Hal may have to wait a while. As well as Colonel Massey, you could make a strong case for Jemmy Wood (Gloucester’s millionaire and miserly banker), Aetheflaed (daughter of Alfred the Great who founded St Oswald’s Priory) and probably many others from Gloucester’s rich history. It’s difficult to see where the cash would come from. The Aircraft Worker was paid for by taxpayers when Northgate Street was pedestrianised and the Civic Trust fundraised for the Emperor Nerva statue. Public funds as we all know are tight, developer contributions are under pressure and the Heritage Lottery fund is already being asked to support ambitious city projects (including two Southgate Street schemes announced in September). Would you support more statues in the city centre and, if so, of whom? And, just as importantly, how should we pay for them? Page 12

It’s never too early to book your panto tickets!
Start the New Year with a laugh! For 2014 Promenade Productions, Cheltenham’s popular ‘panto provider’ have chosen a show which is a little different from the traditional pantomimes, but comes with more than its fair share of mayhem and merriment! Follow the legendary Robin Hood, as he battles the evil Sheriff of Nottingham to free the land from tyranny. Robin is, of course, aided by his merry men – Little John, Friar Tuck, Alan a Dale, to name but a few – while the evil Sheriff is hindered by his hilariously idiotic henchmen and a Soothsayer who fails miserably in her attempts to foretell the future in her crystal ball. Both Robin and the Sheriff are distracted by the beauty of Maid Marian whose nanny, Nora Tittle Tattle, adds even more hilarity to this highly entertaining pantomime. Loads of laughs, stunning sets, fabulous costumes, great dance routines, a large cast and lots of audience participation – a great night out! See you in Sherwood Forest! The panto runs from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th January 2014 at the Bacon Theatre – 7pm daily plus matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. Ticket prices £8-£14 and a Family of Four can share the fun for just £30 on Wednesday and Thursday performances – a great Christmas gift! Call Showcase on 01242 224144 now to reserve the best seats at the lowest prices.

Garden Sheds, Summerhouses, Home Offices, Garages, Workshops, Site Huts, Stables, Kennels, Aviaries, Pavilions or any large timber buildings! The Local Answer
In t he G arden with Julia Smith
The Autumn garden has looked really good this year; I don’t know why – perhaps it was the wet spring and long hot summer, but my borders were really beautiful in October and the Michaelmas daisies and Sedums looked particularly fine with tones of purple and pink and flowered on and on. November is a good month to look back at your garden over the summer and to perhaps decide you would like to change some aspects of it. We are not talking necessarily about a complete garden makeover, but even the best gardens need reworking as the years go on. Perhaps a border is getting too congested, maybe the garden looks stunning in spring and then fizzles out becoming boring for the rest of the year, or the winter garden has no redeeming features – all these can be rectified. As with all things, plants have a shelf life and sometimes they just have grown too old and are past their best (tell me about it!). You have to be quite strong minded to say “this shrub looks horrible, it does nothing for the garden. I know it looked lovely 6 years ago, but it must come out!” Sometimes it needs someone else to come in and look at your garden with a fresh eye. If shrubs such as Cotinus (smoke bush) have become too large they can be cut back now by a third providing the weather is still mild, and this will produce a more compact shrub next year. Prune blackcurrants now – removing 2 or 3 of the oldest branches down to the base. You can take cuttings really easily from blackcurrant bushes by cutting some healthy 25cm long shoots which have formed this year (make a slanted cut at the bottom so you know which way up they go!) and simply sticking them in the ground – it really is that easy. Growing soft fruit is very easy and less timeconsuming than growing some of the vegetable varieties. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

D i d y o u k n o w? The origins of the lawnmower Edwin Beard Budding was a mechanic – building and repairing machinery for the textile mills of the Stroud valleys. He got the idea of the lawnmower after seeing a machine in a local cloth mill which used a cutting cylinder mounted on a bench to trim the irregular nap from the surface of woollen cloth and give a smooth finish. He realised that a similar device could be used to cut grass if the mechanism was mounted in a wheeled frame to make the blades rotate close to the lawn’s surface. It's rumoured that Budding tested his grass cutting prototype at night to avoid curiosity and ridicule from his neighbours. The first machine produced was 19 inches wide with a frame made of wrought iron. The mower was pushed from behind with the motive power coming from the rear land roller which drove gears to transfer the drive to the knives on the cutting cylinder. There was another roller placed in between the cutting cylinder and the land roller which was adjustable to alter the height of cut. On cutting, the grass clippings were hurled forward into a tray like box. It was soon realised, however, that an extra handle was needed in front of the machine which could be used to help pull it along. Two of the earliest Budding machines sold went to Regent’s Park Zoological Gardens in London and the Oxford Colleges. Budding entered into partnership with local engineer John Ferrabee in May 1830 – Ferrabee paid the costs of development, obtained letters of patent and acquired rights to manufacture, sell and license other manufacturers in the production of lawn mowers. Budding’s mower was designed primarily to cut the lawn on sports grounds and extensive gardens, as a superior alternative to the scythe, and was granted a British patent on 31 August 1830. It took ten more years and further innovations to create a machine that could be worked by animals, and sixty years before a steam-powered lawn mower was built. Ferrabee and Budding made the mowers in a factory at Thrupp Mill near Stroud. In 1851 it became the Phoenix Ironworks and produced cloth making machines, water wheels, agricultural machinery and steam engines as well as lawnmowers. By 1862 the company was making eight models of lawnmower in various sizes and had produced over 5,000 machines before production ceased in 1863. Budding also invented the “screw” system on an adjustable spanner! Page 36

Graham Bendall (above) has been looking after lawnmowers for Gloucestershire residents over the last 30 years. He has kindly given us a free service (up to the value of £75) for one lucky reader to win. Now operating from his workshop in Churchdown, he continues to service and repair mowers from all over the county – ordinarily picking them up and returning to his workshop where all the necessary tools and equipment are at hand. Graham services and repairs all types of mower, including electric models, and also sharpens blades – which can get chipped over time. In the case of petrol mowers, he says: “It’s better to service and clean equipment before storing during the winter. However, if you’re going to leave your mower in the shed before getting it serviced in the spring, be sure to clean every blade of grass off – wet or dry – to avoid corosion”. Why not give Graham a call and book your mower in for a service now – before you forget! To enter our draw to win a lawnmower service up to the value of £75, just send your name, address and telephone number to Mower, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Cheltenham, GL53 9QS. Alternatively, email details to competitions@thelocalanswer.co.uk – please state ‘Mower’ in the subject line. Closing date: Wednesday 13th November 2013.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Surviving a downturn in the economy doesn’t just mean making it through a recession. It means managing the first signs of growth too. Despite the last few years being the worst economic period in living memory, the number of businesses suffering formal insolvency proceedings is well short of the levels seen in previous recessions. So have all those surviving businesses weathered the storm and have a solid platform on which to build in the good times, or have they scraped by and are ill-equipped to cope with growth? In these circumstances, cash is king. You have survived, but have you got the cash reserves to allow you to take on more staff, invest in equipment or purchase stock? If you are managing cash, make sure you don’t work for nothing. There is no substitute for good credit control. You couldn’t walk out of a shop without paying for the goods (well, not legally at least), so why allow business customers to get away without settling their debt? Think about invoicing in advance or in instalments as the work is done. It’s no good assuming that the banks will lend you the money. They might – for the right proposition – but there is no substitute for a properly capitalised business that generates and retains reserves to invest in its future. Planning is vital too. Managing cash flow means knowing what your costs and income are likely to be. I see too many firms who don’t budget or plan cash flow. Their chances of managing the upswing are not as strong as those who do. Roger Downes FCA – Managing Director

Take measures to put off opportunists As we head towards the end of Autumn and the start of the Winter period, and in light of Operation Switch – our campaign to increase awareness of home security – I feel it is only right that I begin the column this month with some advice that may help prevent you becoming a victim of burglary. I must stress that it is very, very rare that thieves will enter your house if they believe that someone is inside. However, we have always found that during the Autumn/Winter months opportunist thieves tend to increase their activity because the dark early evenings give them a chance to see if anyone is at home and then strike. With a few simple measures though, you will be able to stop them finding out. Leaving lights on timers, fitting Neil Smith movement activating lights in your Gloucester Inspector gardens and closing curtains are all very easy, highly effective measures that you can take. Security devices like timer switches are available at the reception of Gloucester police station, and I would encourage you to purchase some of these. Please also visit www.gloucestershire.police.uk – more information can be found at the crime reduction pages on our website. If you wish to consult one of our team about measures you can put in place, please make contact with us via 101. Away from our seasonal crime reduction advice, our work as part of the Avenger Task Force – the multi agency project to clamp down on gang activity in the city – continues. You may have read recently of an attack on a gang member who was assaulted and humiliated while being filmed on a mobile phone – all because he criticised one of the gangs. The attack was very unsettling and I am sure many people in the city will be shocked. I understand that, but would also like to reassure people that all the work we have been doing in mapping out the gangs and encouraging people to come forward has given us a clearer picture than ever before of the full extent of the issue. Again I can reassure people the problem is nowhere near the scale of big cities like Birmingham. It is an issue of concern though, which is why we are tackling it head on with our partners. While our crime operations team did a brilliant job gathering the evidence in this case, even when the offenders thought they had covered their tracks, the investigation began because a third party was brave enough to come forward to someone in the Operation Avenger team. That is a huge vindication of the project and the benefits it’s already yielding. I’m confident we are on track to beat this problem. Please remember – information about gangs or gang activity can be reported on 101 or emailed anonymously to ATF@gloucestershire.police.uk.
