Stars of spontaneity come to town Cheltenham Town Hall plays host to Paul Merton and his worldrenowned ‘Impro Chums’ on Saturday 19th October – the third night of their UK 2013 Autumn Tour which runs until 23rd November. Paul and his chums – Richard Vranch, Lee Simpson, Mike McShane and Suki Webster – will create a new and unique comedy show every single night, based entirely on suggestions from the audience, their own finely honed improvisational skills and an almost manic compulsion to show off. They are a unique, vintage blend of experience and inventiveness: Paul Merton is a founder member of The Comedy Store Players, and still regulary appears at the ‘Comedy Store’. Mike McShane is best known as one of the original crew of ‘Whose Line’ and has been to and fro, from America to Britain with stops in Hollywood in between. He is married to the beautiful and gifted Karen, and is tolerated by an English cat named Henry. He would like to thank his fellow Chums for keeping him sane. Lee Simpson became a member of The Comedy Store Players in 1987. He is a founder member of ‘Improbable’, one of the country’s foremost theatre companies and, along with

Page 4

Richard Vranch, he wrote and performed on ‘Paul Merton – The Tour’ and ‘Paul Merton – The Palladium’, he also directed Paul in ‘Paul Merton – And This is Me’. Richard Vranch is also a Comedy Store Player. He improvises and writes comedy, and does voiceovers, animations and panel shows. He’s appeared on Radio 4’s ‘Just a Minute’, and toured the world – from Mexico to Palestine – acting in sketch shows. He has a PhD and presented a Channel 4 science show. He now performs a comedy/science/hula-hoop act ‘Dr Hula’. Suki Webster is a regular guest of The Comedy Store Players and has toured the world with ‘Paul Merton And His Impro Chums’. More recently she co-wrote ‘Paul Merton Looks at Alfred Hitchcock’ (BBC4/2) and a Morecambe and Wise tribute show (BBC1). She also cowrote, and was Assistant Director on, ‘Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood’ (BBC2). Don’t miss out on a fantastic and unique night of entertainment. If you’re unable to attend the Cheltenham event, you can still catch the act nearby – the chums are at Coventry, Swindon and Bristol on 2nd 11th and 19th November respectively. For further information and a full list of tour dates visit www.paulmerton.com.

The Local Answer

An education in entertainment Paul Merton – one of Britan’s best loved comedians – is well known for his improvisation skill. His humour is rooted in deadpan, surreal and sometimes dark comedy and he is considered by a number of critics and fellow entertainers to be among the nation’s greatest comedians. He is a regular guest on Radio 4’s ‘Just A Minute’ and is an established face on TV shows such as the hugely popular ‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘Room 101’, ‘Paul Merton Looks at Alfred Hitchcock’ (BBC4/2), ‘Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood’ (BBC 2) and his travel series for Channel Five in India, China, Europe and, more recently, ‘Paul Merton’s Adventures’ and the televised series of ‘Just A Minute’ (BBC2). Paul was born on 9 July 1957 in Parsons Green, London, to his English father – Albert Martin, a train guard on the London Underground – and his Irish mother, Mary Ann (neé Power).

Long-running banter Over many years appearing on ‘Have I Got News For You’, the viewing public have been entertained at times by Paul’s banter with fellow team captain Ian Hislop regarding their educational backgrounds. Ian became head boy at independent boarding school Ardingly College before reading English Literature at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, while Paul failed his ‘Eleven Plus’ before attending Wimbledon College, a Jesuitrun secondary school that had just become a comprehensive, where he achieved A-levels in English and History. After leaving school, Paul

worked at the Tooting employment office for seven years. Paul often claims he was inspired to go into comedy at an early age watching clowns at a circus, remembering: “I had no idea that adults could behave like that”. He gained his earliest professional credits under his birth name (Paul James Martin), including an appearance as a yokel in ‘Time’ – an episode of The Young Ones in 1984. On joining Equity he found the name Paul Martin was already taken, so he renamed himself after Merton – the district of London where he grew up. Though he had harboured serious ambitions of becoming a performing comedian since his school days, it wasn’t until April 1982, at the ‘Comedy Store’ in Soho, that his dream was realised. He recalls that on only his second or third night he ‘found’ the dour role that has influenced his comic approach ever since.

Paul will be performing with his ‘Impro Chums’ at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 19th October (see opposite page). For your chance to win a pair of tickets to this night of spontaneous wit, enter our draw by sending your name, address and telephone number to Impro Chums, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QS. Alternatively, email details to competitions@thelocalanswer.co.uk – please state ‘Impro Chums’ in the subject line. Closing date: Friday 11th October 2013.

Delicious Dishes Caramelised Tarts with Toffee Sauce

Ingredients: 300g/12oz puff pastry; 500g/1lb 4oz apples, such as Braeburn or Cox; 1⁄2 lemon; 75g/3oz soft brown sugar; 50g/2oz butter; 100ml/4floz double cream; caster sugar. Method: Toffee sauce – this can be made several days ahead, kept in the fridge and then gently warmed when ready to serve. 1 Heat the butter and brown sugar, stirring until dissolved. 2 Gently boil until the sugar turns golden brown. 3 Add the cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes until golden and thickened. Caremelised Tarts 1 Preheat oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. 2 Roll out pastry to 5mm/1⁄4in thick. Cut six 10cm/4in circles and knock up the sides with the back of a knife. Score a line with a knife 2cm/3⁄4 in from the

outside of each circle. Prick the inner area with a fork. Place on a baking sheet and return to the fridge. 3 Peel, core and slice 400g/1lb of the apples. Place in a saucepan with 15ml/1 tablespoon water and a good squeeze of lemon juice. Cook over a gentle heat until softened. Cool. 4 Thinly slice the remaining apple, removing the core but not the skin. Place a spoonful of the apple puree in the centre of each pastry circle. Spread to where the line is scored. Arrange the sliced apple over the top. Brush the pastry rim with milk, sprinkle with caster sugar and cook for 20 minutes. Serve with a scoop of ice-cream.

Withington and Our front cover this month shows a delightful landmark in the village of Withington – a stone crocodile head which jets water into a trough all year round. It was created in Victorian times and recently renovated by local a stonemason. Withington is a small Cotswold The Loca l village between Cheltenham and Cirencester straddling the River Coln. On the west bank of Withington the village rises, encompassing the manor house and the Grade I listed church of St Michael and All Angels which dates back to the 12th Century. In 2006 an archaeological dig was conducted in the village and televised by Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ programme. A family of moles had uncovered pieces of mosaic which were then noticed by local archaeologist Roger Box who called in the Time Team to investigate. They spent three days digging the site and uncovered a previously unknown Roman Villa. Just downsteam from the crocodile is Fossebridge – a pretty hamlet with four acres of gardens and a lake. Why not visit the crocodile and then take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Chedworth Woods – see this month’s ‘Short Walk’ on the next page. You could then, perhaps, warm yourself up and indulge in a superb lunch and refreshments at The Inn at Fossebridge – a charming 17th century coaching inn with a cosy bar and log fires. 1 These are the remains of one of the largest Romano-British villas in Britain. It is thought to have been inhabited as a country house over a period of 250 years. The location was chosen for its sheltered position, water supply, and communications. The first villa was built in the 2nd century but was later altered and enlarged some time in the 4th century, from which the present buildings date. The first remains were discovered by accident in 1864 by a gamekeeper who began to notice fragments of Roman paving and pottery among the rabbit burrows. A museum now houses finds from the site, and there are several impressive mosaics of varying quality, the remains of two bathhouses and hypocausts for underfloor heating.

This is a pleasant walk that includes the wooded banks of the River Coln. When planning the walk allow plenty of time to visit the Roman villa, owned by the National Trust, it is regarded as one of the finest examples in Britain. It gives a fascinating insight into 4th century Roman Britain and has some beautiful mosaics.

The Romans introduced large edible snails to Britain and they can still be seen in and around the villa.

A Use the car park near the villa. Walk back down the road to the gates on the right at the bottom of the hill and turn right along the track. Continue to the road and carry on a short way just past the house on the right. B Turn right up the steps into the wood. Cross the first track and turn right at a second track. After about 30yds (27m) bear half-left downhill to the main track in the valley. Turn right and follow this track up the valley to the open field. 2 The ancient Chedworth Woods have a great diversity of flora and fauna. Ancient woods are those which were in existence before 1600 and because of this they tend to be very rich in wildlife. Bluebell, primrose and wood spurge can all be seen in the area as well as ramsons (wild garlic) and wild strawberry. There are also many woodland birds such as tawny owls, woodcock, nuthatch, blackcap, wood warbler and wren. In damp weather the large Roman snail which was introduced by the Romans might be spotted.

C At the entrance to the field, turn slightly left and head uphill across the field, aiming for the marker posts visible in the distance. Bear left slightly as you pass the two trees and join the road. D Turn right for ½ mile (800m) to a bridleway on the right just as the road starts to descend steeply. E Turn right and follow the track, passing the buildings on the right and walk through several gates. F As the track ends continue along the path which bears slightly right, just to the right of the gate straight ahead. Follow the path into the wood and continue downhill. Stay on the path to a stile and then follow the track straight ahead for a Chedworth short distance. At the road turn left back to the car. www.TheLocalAnswer.co.uk

Having worked in Australia with all sorts of highly venomous snakes, deadly spiders and paralysing ticks you might assume coming to work in England would be a much more benign environment for pets. For the most part you would be right, but the UK and Europe does have it’s share of unusual bugs and critters and – with continental travel with our four legged companions becoming more popular – we are seeing some equally unpleasant and sometimes serious problems on our doorstep. One of the more common parasites that we see at this time of year is the humble harvest mite or Trombicula Autumnalis to give it it’s scientific name. The larval stage of this mite will attach itself to dogs’ skin, often between toes or on thinly haired skin, and cause a rather intense irritation and dermatitis. They are near microscopic but are just visible with the naked eye as little orange dots. The mites are picked up from grassy areas and are most active on warm sunny days. If your pet has particularly itchy feet or skin in late Summer and Autumn then this might just be the trigger. Adders – we all shudder at the thought of venomous snakes and we certainly see a few Adder bites each year on dogs, often over Cleeve Hill. Fortunately the European Adder is not nearly as venomous as the Australian snakes, but it can still cause a significant reaction and occasionally antivenom is required for very badly affected dogs. Most of the time, pain relief, treatment of swelling and – if necessary – shock treatment fixes most dogs. Increasingly with the ease of travel to the continent with dogs we are becoming aware of problems that some animals bring back with them. Several tick-borne parasites are reasonably common in France and Spain. The continental ticks themselves don’t cause a huge problem but they can carry blood parasites that can cause very serious anaemias and organ damage. Babesia and Ehrlichia are two such bugs and I recently had the misfortune to diagnose a case of Babesiosis here in Cheltenham in a dog just returned from France. Fortunately, with prompt medical treatment, we were able to cure the dog – but it’s likely we’ll see more of these nasties in future. Most of these parasites are easily avoided with appropriate insecticidal treatments given monthly as preventatives or before overseas travel. At the end of the day, at least here in England we don’t have poisonous spiders! Dr Oliver Wilkinson BVSc MRCVS

‘THINK

GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL’

– IT’S ‘TIME FOR TREES’! Former teachers help with ‘wood’ work Former Pate’s Grammar School teachers Hilary and Bob Beale have not stopped working since their respective ‘retirements’. They are both involved in a number of groups and societies, deriving great satisfaction from helping others and the environment. One such organisation is the ‘Cheltenham Tree Group’ of which Bob is chairman and Hilary treasurer. Along with fellow members they are dedicated to promoting the growth of trees in Cheltenham, working hand in hand with the local authority to keep a check on the health of trees and encourage new planting. Winter is the group’s busiest time – supplying trees at a range of sizes to various people and organisations. Among the numerous sites around the town to have benefited from the group’s work are Cox’s Meadow, Sandy Lane Playing Field, Tommy Taylor’s Lane and Pittville Park where a tree was planted in memory of Joyce Goldring, Cheltenham Tree Group's founder. Founded in 1987, Cheltenham Tree Group are keen to welcome new members and raise public awareness of the work carried out. Bob said: “We’ve got a great team of hardworking people of all ages, but we’re always on the look out for more. There’s a considerable amount of work involved in tending and planting the trees each year, particularly during certain months, so any regular or occasional help is much appreciated.” Ordinarily the group have around 500 seedlings, whips and saplings in stock – a good selection of mainly native species – of which approximately one third are supplied to the community each winter season. The trees go mainly to schools, playing fields, local community projects and several voluntary groups working on nature conservation. Single or multiple trees are also made available to individuals, offered on a “Dig Your Own” basis and supplied bare-rooted for planting November to March – the best time being before Christmas, giving time for establishment of a good root system before spring growth starts. The trees are normally exchanged for a donation which will be used to plant more trees in the developing world. There are currently plenty to choose from at the group’s nursery in Charlton Kings – call Peter on 01242 578983 to arrange a viewing. If you’d like to get involved in any way as a member, give Bob a call on 01242 516469 – the annual subscription is only £5 to help with administrative and newsletter costs. For a great deal more information on the wonderful work carried out by Cheltenham Tree Group, as well as helpful hints and tips for those of you wishing to choose and plant your own tree, visit their website – www.cheltenhamtreegroup.btck.co.uk. Bob is pictured above on ‘the mound’ within the grounds of Pate’s Grammar School adjacent to Coronation Square where he planted many oak whips some years ago. Hilary is pictured second from right in our top left picture with 11 other members – between them they planted almost 200 young trees in two hours earlier this year.

Take a little Me! time

Sharran Welcome to Me Hair and Beauty, I’m very proud of our salons and wanted to create an environment that offered both quality and experience, but without the high street prices. The salons work with my very talented business partners and every stylist is their own business within the salons so this ensures the quality of service is delivered every time, with a blend of charismatic personalities and individuality. My passion has always been cutting and giving you what you want and not just what you’ve always had, so if you’re looking for a new you, come and see Me! and not forgetting the gents you can trust me with my cut throat razor for the full wet shave barber experience at either the Reddings or Dursley salon.

Rachael Coming from a busy high street salon Rachael is the talented youngster of the team offering precision cutting for the gents and a full range of salon services for our ladies. “I love a challenge and welcome all new customers to join us for a consultation to see what we can offer and build your trust in our brilliant little salon. We always have special offers and you can find mine on our web site”.

Trudi The more conventional stylist where experience covers traditional and modern hairdressing. “Whilst cutting is a passion I enjoy hair up and creating beautiful transformations. With Autumn the party season fast approaching think about adding some warm rich tone highlights, big curls or even a soft perm to give yourself that extra special feel. “

Vacancies: Cheltenham and Dursley We are currently looking to appoint on a self employed basis with full support and low rental start up costs the following positions. Cheltenham: A qualified and professional Beautician for our newly refurbished beauty rooms. Dursley: We currently require a full time Barber and either a full time or part time stylist. Come and join our team within our expanding local salons and make your talents a success.

In previous years this has been a very popular event for motor enthusiasts and the general public alike. You can listen to engines roar, climb aboard bikes and cars, and find out more information from the drivers. Cars on show include Rally, Racers, Dragsters, Hill Climb and Classic cars. If motorcycles are more your thing there are plenty on display including Motor-cross, Trials, Circuit Racers and Classic motorcycles. Vehicles will be displayed subject to availability. As always this is a free event but on the day the club will be collecting for the Breweryʼs chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. For more information on this visit www.cheltmc.com www.cheltmc.com or email cmc@cheltmc.com.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 [U] When eccentric young boffin Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) came up with a food replicator that turned water into grub, he was initially acclaimed as a hero. But after cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes devastated the island of Swallow Falls, everyone had to flee. Flint thought he’d destroyed his invention. But he was wrong. On returning, he discovers that the food left behind has been evolving! Now Swallow Falls is populated by bizarre food animals ranging from toothy tacodiles to lumbering hippotatomuses. The only way to stop them invading the mainland is to shut down the machine for good. And that means embarking on an epic journey from the breakfast bog all the way to the big rock candy mountain, battling the likes of cheespiders and fruit cockatiels. This truly tasty sequel to the hit 2009 animation delivers another smorgasbord of entertainment. 4 OCTOBER

Filth [18] James McAvoy plays a corrupt, abusive, junkie cop in this outrageous yarn from the author of ‘Trainspotting’. Misanthropic, Machiavellian Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy) is not the sort of policeman you’d stop to ask for directions. This psychopathic and corrupt Edinburgh cop is in line for promotion and he’s determined not to allow anything to get in his way. He’s supposed to be investigating a brutal, racially charged murder. But he seems more interested in thwarting the ambitions of colleagues, such as Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell). That’s when he’s not drinking to excess, hoovering drugs and abusing women. Now, however, his past is threatening to catch up with him! James McAvoy gives a mesmerising performance as ‘Trainspotting’ author Irvine Welsh’s monstrous anti-hero. Among the outstanding supporting cast are Jim Broadbent as Bruce’s psychiatrist, Eddie Marsan as his much-abused friend and Imogen Poots as a disapproving colleague. Watch out for the tapeworm! 11 OCTOBER

The Fifth Estate [TBA] Young internet idealists Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Bruhl) found the Wikileaks website on a shoestring budget. Their intention is to hold the powerful to account by providing an outlet for whistleblowers. They quickly make headlines with the leaking of military footage showing unarmed journalists being gunned down. But when Wikileaks publishes the biggest trove of classified US documents in history, the organisation finds itself in deep water. While supporters hail this as a blow against government secrecy, opponents accuse them of putting lives at risk. Directed by Bill Condon, ‘The West Wing’ writer Josh Singer’s engrossing political thriller is based in part on Domscheit-Berg’s book about his experiences. TV’s Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, delivers an uncannily accurate performance as Assange. Watch out too for new Doctor Who Peter Capaldi as Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger! 8 NOVEMBER

Gravity [12A] Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are cast adrift in space in this intense 3D sci-fi thriller! Medical engineer Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is on her very first mission aboard the space shuttle Explore. Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), who’s on his final flight before retiring. But a seemingly routine spacewalk 372 miles above the Earth ends in disaster when satellite debris ploughs into the shuttle. The impact catapults Stone and Kowalsky into the unforgiving blackness. An eerie silence tells them they have also lost contact with NASA altogether. With a finite supply of oxygen, their prospects seem bleak. But panic and fear gives way to a realisation that their only hope of survival is to work together and travel further into deep space. ‘Children of Men’ director Alfonso Cuaron returns to sci-fi with this palm-moistening survival thriller, brilliantly shot in immersive 3D.

18 OCTOBER – Previews 12 & 13 October

Turbo [U] A freak accident transforms a snail into a racing champ in this eye-popping animated 3D underdog comedy! Theo (Ryan Reynolds) is an ordinary garden snail with a big dream. Inspired by his hero, racing champ Guy Gagne (Bill Hader), he yearns to become the world’s fastest mollusc! When he’s inadvertently sucked into a race car engine, our plucky hero’s DNA gets supercharged. Theo changes his name to Turbo and finds his crazy dream coming true when a Taco company sponsors his trip to participate in the Indy 500. His cautious brother Chet (Paul Giamatti) is less enthusiastic. But Turbo is determined to overcome all obstacles – and avoid getting squished! From the makers of ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda’, this fast and furious 3D fable keeps the laughs coming all the way to the finish line. The amazing voice cast also includes Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Rudolph and Michelle Rodriguez.

Captain Phillips [12A] Tom Hanks stars in the incredible true story of the first US ship to be seized by pirates in 200 years. In 2009, the unarmed US container ship Maersk Alabama is charting a course off the coast of Somalia. On his radar, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) observes speedboats heading in their direction. He then launches a well-planned emergency procedure that puts the ship into lockdown while its crew hide. The heavily armed pirates led by Muse (Barkhad Abdi) board the vessel, take Phillips hostage, and flee in a lifeboat. So begins a tense, high stakes stand-off that quickly makes international headlines. This true-life thriller is adapted from Captain Phillips’ own book about his experiences by ‘The Hunger Games’ screenwriter Billy Ray. ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ director Paul Greengrass delivers a typically complex, nuanced, politically charged action film that focuses on the two contrasting men at the centre of the unfolding drama. 25 OCTOBER

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa [18] The Jackass team dispatch a small boy and his grandpa on a jaw-dropping hidden camera road trip! At 86, you’d expect Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) to be an upstanding senior citizen. But he’s a drunken, thieving degenerate. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s in the company of his impressionable eight-year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll). Irving’s taking Billy on a road trip across America to return the boy to his dad. Along the way, they succeed in causing offence and astonishment among everyone they meet. A wedding is destroyed and a funeral disrupted. Incorrigible Irving even encourages podgy little Billy to dress up as a little girl to enter the Carolina Cutie Pie Pageant. Naturally, parents are disgusted at the kid’s inappropriate dance routine! The Jackass crew’s first full-length narrative feature unleashes signature character Irving Zisman upon an unsuspecting nation. Hidden cameras capture every hilarious reaction to his appalling childrearing skills. 25 OCTOBER

Ender’s Game [TBA] When an insectoid alien race known as the Formics attempted an invasion of the Earth, they were only narrowly defeated. Mankind’s greatest hero was International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), without whom all would have been lost. Now Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) is determined that we should be ready for the Formics’ inevitable return. So he has established a Battle School in the hope of finding the next Mazer Rackham. Shy Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) is swiftly identified as the star pupil thanks to his brilliant strategic mind. But will he withstand the rigours of training? At stake is nothing less than the future of the human race. ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ director Gavin Hood’s thrill-packed adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s prescient sci fi novel boasts a brilliant multi-generational cast.

The Everyman Theatre plays host to the wonderful musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers featuring EastEnders star and winner of Dancing on Ice Sam Attwater as Adam Pontipee and Helena Blackman (How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, South Pacific and The Wizard of Oz) as Milly. A sensational brand new hi-tech production with colourful costumes, fabulous sets, special effects and sassy high energy performances! They return to his backwoods home. Only then does she discover he has six brothers – all living in his cabin. Milly sets out to reform the uncouth siblings, who are anxious to get wives of their own. Then, after reading about the Roman capture of the Sabine women, Adam develops an inspired solution to his brothers’ loneliness ... kidnap the women they want. The invention of British Summer Time Amazingly it has been over 100 years since British Summer Time or BST was first proposed to Britain. Now it is just a twice-yearly ritual that we change the clocks, forward and back. William Willett, a keen horse rider was so incensed by the waste of morning daylight hours during the summer that he rallied all his life, even publishing a pamphlet called ‘The Waste of Daylight’ to encourage people out of bed earlier in summer, utilising the daylight hours. He died in 1915 with the government still refusing to officially accept BST, but it was just the following year that Germany introduced this system and Britain then followed suit in May 1916 – just a few weeks after – and we have been resetting time ever since. The British government passed the Summer Time Act of 1916 swiftly and the first day of British Summer Time started on 21 May 1916, which was widely reported in the press. In 1968 the clocks went forward in March but did not return to Greenwich Mean Time in the autumn entering a three-year experiment called British Standard Time, staying one hour ahead of Greenwich until 1971 when the government decided to return to the original British Summer Time. Opinions still remain divided whether British Summer Time is a good thing – no-one can agree whether it is a solution or not – so the debate continues ...

Don’t forget ‘BST’ ends on Saturday 26th October 2013

night ... Let’s get batty at the Birdpark this Halloween

Don’t miss out on the annual Halloween Special at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park where you’ll be welcomed by beautiful birds, dawdling ducks, flying bats and dashing deer as you explore the enchanting illuminations, spooky lighting and fun activities that are in store for you. It’s not often that you can enter the nighttime world of birds and bats but, as they all prepare for bedtime, it certainly gives you a new insight into the countryside at night. Halloween marks the end of the summer and gets us all in the mood for the winter months ahead as the children dress up for a fun evening, and The Bird Park is a wonderful setting for Halloween. Children can knock on the door of the Wendy House and see if the ‘not so’ Wicked Witch is going to give them a ‘trick’ or a ‘treat’ – or perhaps they can catch a treat another way! It’s all innocent fun and children love to be out as it’s getting dark, but knowing that they are safe. So wrap up warm and spot the ghosts in the woods and the birds in the trees! Have your ‘fun fortune’ told in the Gypsy Caravan and get your face painted to celebrate Halloween! Try the lucky dip, or keep warm by the small bonfire, and be spellbound by the delightful surroundings. If you are after more ‘fun’ than ‘fright’ then visit Prinknash Bird & Deer Park for their best Halloween yet! Tickets are on sale now, and a discount is available for advance purchases – visit www.thebirdpark.com for details.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

We are proud of the cleaning and housekeeping services we provide, but don’t just take our word for it, here is what our customers have to say about us ... Everything has been so easy for me – I come home to a clean house and even my food shopping delivery has been put away P. A. Alday – Chippenham

We have been really impressed with The Housekeeper team – Rob and Jon are a pleasure to deal with and our house is always cleaned and tidied to our expectations L. James – Cheltenham

I was a little sceptical at first that a cleaner could clean my house to my own specifications, but I have to say I am really happy with the quality of work. It has freed up time for me to spend riding my horses which is exactly what I wanted. Would happily recommend The Housekeeper to anyone S Barson – Cheltenham

Our Housekeeper, Sarah, has been fantastic – please pass on my thanks to her once again M Cocks – Malmesbury

A sparkling new service for your home Necessity, they say, is the Mother of invention – and it was exactly that which inspired businessmen Rob Wright and Jon Turner to launch an innovative new national service which receives its debut in our area. These young, successful innovators have over 35 years combined experience delivering excellent service to customers and fully intend to shake up what can be perceived as a dull industry. ‘The Housekeeper’ is an entirely bespoke home cleaning and management service designed for the way we live today. “Our days start and finish in our homes,” says Rob, “where we enjoy spending free time with our families, friends and pets. Often that time can be squeezed by essential routine chores.” He goes on to explain “The Housekeeper is a bespoke cleaning service”. However, a quick glance at their website confirms that it is as far from the traditional ‘Mrs Overall’ as it is possible to be – The Housekeeper will even host a dinner party in your own home! Having identified many similar hard working families who can benefit from their help, the business was born. Now, returning to a home which smells of polish and shines like a new pin is taken for granted by The Housekeeper’s newest clients, but feeling secure and confident about the people they allow into their home is of equal importance. It’s precisely for that reason that all Housekeeper team members are extensively referenced, criminal record checked and trained before Rob Wright

We know how difficult it is to fit housework into your busy life. The Housekeeper has been created to offer a truly bespoke service to deal with

graduating to join the team. Both Rob and Jon are experts in people management and are bringing those skills to motivate and reward their successful team to ensure a growing list of satisfied clients.

‘Delivering amazing satisfaction to customers’ Rob said: “The Housekeeper was created with one very simple vision in mind – making life easier and more enjoyable for our clients. Both Jon and I have used domestic cleaning services before. There are lots to choose from but, for a variety of reasons including flexibility, reliability and – above all – service, our experiences have mostly been disappointing. This is where the idea for The Housekeeper was born – we knew we could make a difference. Based on our values, ethics and proven experience delivering amazing satisfaction to customers through a highly motivated team, we are confident that we can offer a competitively priced service that will not

any chores that take up too much of your valuable time. We’ll do what you need, when you need it … we’re here to make your life easier.

disappoint – a service that is simply ‘making life easier’.” They certainly offer an impressive bespoke home cleaning service, but are equally comfortable managing all of the other housekeeping jobs that you just haven’t got around to – or don’t have the time to do. Washing, ironing, window cleaning or taking receipt of your shopping and deliveries are just a few on an impressive list. The Housekeeper is designed to become part of your daily life. Just one person or an entire team to assist with any aspect of managing your home. “Our client list is growing,” says Jon, “as is our team which we continue to train and monitor until they are confident in providing the highest standard of service – surpassing traditional expectations.” To find out more about The Housekeeper, or to arrange a visit, call Jon or Rob or visit their website – details below. In t he G arden with Julia Smith

October is a good time to get on with the tidying up process in the borders. The soil will still be warm and moist, ideal for planting. Continue lifting and dividing clumps of perennials that have grown too big. Swap amongst your friends to increase your diversity of plants. Everyone loves something for nothing! One word of warning – it may be prudent to take all the soil from the roots of a plant from a friend’s garden, washing them off will ensure that you get rid of any perennial weeds like bindweed, so do be careful. Bindweed will have died down so you may not realise it is there, likewise the dreaded Ground Elder. Collect up fallen leaves and compost in a separate ‘leaf bin’. This can be either chicken wire wrapped round four stout posts set at the corners (have two made and use one whilst the other is rotting down as it takes a good year to create leaf-mold) or, if you don’t have the space, put the leaves into black bin-liners – half fill the bags and prick some holes in, then store somewhere outside. Evergreen leaves don’t compost well but would need shredding (things like holly, laurel and Mahonia). Don’t let leaves lie on heathers and dwarf conifers and other small shrubs as they can cause disease – they shouldn’t be left on the lawn either. A good collection method on the grass is to use the lawnmower, which shreds them at the same time. However, if deciduous leaves are lying on the flower borders in which all the perennials have died back they can be left – by springtime they will have disappeared if the worms are doing their job! Mulch is a term that is bandied about by garden articles, and it basically means a layer of material laid over the earth to keep moisture in and deter weeds. The composted leaves you make are perfect to lay down around Hydrangeas, and especially other plants which prefer an acid soil (pH of under 7) like Azaleas, and Camellias. Bark can also be used, as can gravel, slate chippings, etc. The golden rule is to make sure the soil underneath is moist before you lay down the ‘mulch’, and to remove perennial weeds such as dandelions. As always, if you fancy a change in your garden – be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design – do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

SAVE A LIFE YOU ONLY HAVE MINUTES TO

During September The Local Answer hosted training for the new Community Public Access Defibrillation equipment that was installed at the Ullenwood Court Business Park. Ullenwood Court owner Michael Cuttell (pictured below) arranged for the installation and training to take place as part of his continual enhancement of the facilities tenants greatly benefit from. He said: “Like the representatives of all the companies attending, I’m extremely grateful to Martin Fagan from The Community Heartbeat Trust for the training sessions he has delivered. “Everyone was surprised by how easy the equipment is to use. It talks through, step by step, everything you need to do until the emergency services arrive – giving the patient the best possible chance of survival. Hopefully we’ll never need to use the equipment but, in the interests of our tenants well-being, it’s on site if required. One of the key messages highlighted by Martin was – ‘the only thing you can do wrong is to do nothing’. This was highlighted by the fact that you can’t hurt anyone – the defibrillator will only provide a shock if it is required. Martin explained what the equipment is, what it does, and provided statistics that demonstrate just how important it can be: A defibrillator delivers an electrical current through the chest which aims to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm allowing it to pump again. An AED is a portable defibrillator which uses intelligent technology to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. When applied to a patient, a sequence of voice

commands and screen messages guide the user through the defibrillation process. This means the machine can be used safely by people with no medical background. â—? The cabinet storing the AED can only be opened by a member of the public with an access code given by the emergency services via a 999 call.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) happens between 140,000 and 200,000 times a year in the UK, making it one of the UK’s largest killers. The potential for saving a life is dependent on time – the faster medical help is administered, the better the chance of survival. To achieve a positive outcome when dealing with SCA, medical assistance must be given within 4-5 minutes of the event. In remote areas it is sometimes difficult to get an emergency medical team to arrive on scene quickly and this is

why Community Public Access Defibrillators (cPAD) play a vital role in helping save lives in rural communities. Statistics show that the survival rate after a SCA with CPR alone is 5%. By using a defibrillator, the survival rate increases to 50%.’ Martin said: “The very best people to save a life are those already on the scene. You cannot make the situation worse, only better, and may give someone a chance to live. Call 999 immediately and get the ambulance service to help. They will talk you through what needs to be done and, if required, tell you where to access a defib unit – usually stored in high visibility yellow cabinets for easy recognition. CHT works closely with the ambulance service and together we can save lives!

ALWAYS DIAL 999 IN AN EMERGENCY For more informa on on the Community Heartbeat Trust, AEDs or public awareness and training sessions visit:

Cars have been a passion for Paul Montagu (pictured right) of The Deal Maker Nationwide for many years. From a young age he has worked in the car sales sector for various franchises, progressing from sales to leadership level – and now he’s using all his knowledge of cars and negotiation skills to help the public. The service Paul provides is, essentially, to give peace of mind to those of us – ladies and gents – who are not entirely comfortable when it comes to selecting the right vehicle or service, including finance packages and ‘add on’ products. He’ll also help with negotiations to help ensure you don’t pay an excessive sum for goods and services. Aside from buying their own home, purchasing a new or second hand car may be the largest outlay of cash most people are faced with, so avoiding costly ‘pitfalls’ is important. Paul said: “Both private and group dealerships have enjoyed an enormous amount of power when it comes to negotiating due to their knowledge of the inner workings of the environment. So I started to think! Wouldn’t it be great if I could apply my sales and industry knowledge to benefit the public – taking away the uncertainty and pressure.” Everyone’s requirements are unique, so Paul will tailor his charges accordingly depending on the service you require. This can be an hourly rate or a ‘one off’ set fee, and there are never any hidden extras! For full details of the many associated services Paul can provide, why not give him a call or visit his website (see left).

Interest rate dilemma The appointment earlier this year of Mark Carney (pictured below) as the new Governor of the Bank of England renewed speculation about the long-term future of interest rates. Carney has stated that they will remain at their record low level until he sees signs that the economy is on a sustainable course of recovery. He defines that by reference to unemployment levels. So until unemployment drops below 7%, interest rates stay as they are. Is everybody happy with Carney’s announcement? Millions will be, but not all. Actually, pleasing everyone is impossible, but we’ll ignore that for the purposes of this debate! For those who have borrowed money to fund their business ambitions or to buy their homes, low interest rates have been critical to success, and at times survival, during recent difficult economic times. It’s sad, but it’s true, that as we come out of difficult trading times and businesses expand, there will be more failures than in the last few years. Interest rates need to remain low to give businesses the chance to succeed. But what about savers? With inflation running at 2.8% per annum, a standard rate tax payer has to earn 3.5% just to keep pace with inflation every year. With interest rates at record lows, finding this sort of return, without taking risks that may be inappropriate, is a challenge. No, Mr Carney can’t please everyone. But at least he’s told us what to expect for the foreseeable future. Roger Downes FCA – Managing Director

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

We’re all human Well, its business as usual as officers try and take their summer leave. We talk about having a work/life balance in the Police, as I am sure other professions do, but being a manager of staff I feel it is so important to make sure we try and strike that balance. And that means taking the right amount of time away from the workplace and having some down time. All too often I have seen officers ‘fall over’ because they take on too much and let the job take over their lives. This is something that the general public sometimes forget – that the police are humans as well. They suffer with long hours and stressful situations as much as anyone and it is important to understand, and on occasions empathise and have some forgiveness, if they seem a little curt or unhelpful. It may be that the officer who was a little short with you has just come from dealing with an infant’s death or had just been assaulted or had witnessed a hanging. I think what I am trying to get across in my own way is that we are all human and have human frailties – and clearly it works both ways as the Police need to be aware of the problems our community members face, and be cognisant of them maybe having a bad day also. In short, we should all try to treat other people as we would like to be treated.

“We’re up for the challenge” It’s been a busy old time recently – with a couple of murders to investigate, and all that entails, plus the badger cull is now upon us and the massive staffing implications it brings. Taken together with normal policing, the university students coming back and the end of summer in sight, it will be a challenging next few months. But we are up for the challenge and you can rest assured that your local policing team will not shirk in facing it. A couple of bits of information for you: Push bikes appear to be the chosen item for thieves at the moment, please record your bike details and get a good lock. The other message is to our elderly residents – be extra vigilant when using your debit cards in public places. We still have some eastern European thieves at large with their preferred scam being to follow elderly people and watch them use their cards, then taking a note of the PIN. They then find a way of stealing the card, usually by distracting the target by asking for directions or similar, and an accomplice then helping themselves to the card. Please, please be careful. We have caught a few and locked a few up but Waterhouse there are still more out there. Tim Cheltenham South Please don’t make it easy for them! LPT. Inspector Gloucestershire Constabulary
