Stars of spontaneity come to town Cheltenham Town Hall plays host to Paul Merton and his worldrenowned ‘Impro Chums’ on Saturday 19th October – the third night of their UK 2013 Autumn Tour which runs until 23rd November. Paul and his chums – Richard Vranch, Lee Simpson, Mike McShane and Suki Webster – will create a new and unique comedy show every single night, based entirely on suggestions from the audience, their own finely honed improvisational skills and an almost manic compulsion to show off. They are a unique, vintage blend of experience and inventiveness: Paul Merton is a founder member of The Comedy Store Players, and still regulary appears at the ‘Comedy Store’. Mike McShane is best known as one of the original crew of ‘Whose Line’ and has been to and fro, from America to Britain with stops in Hollywood in between. He is married to the beautiful and gifted Karen, and is tolerated by an English cat named Henry. He would like to thank his fellow Chums for keeping him sane. Lee Simpson became a member of The Comedy Store Players in 1987. He is a founder member of ‘Improbable’, one of the country’s foremost theatre companies and, along with
Page 4
Richard Vranch, he wrote and performed on ‘Paul Merton – The Tour’ and ‘Paul Merton – The Palladium’, he also directed Paul in ‘Paul Merton – And This is Me’. Richard Vranch is also a Comedy Store Player. He improvises and writes comedy, and does voiceovers, animations and panel shows. He’s appeared on Radio 4’s ‘Just a Minute’, and toured the world – from Mexico to Palestine – acting in sketch shows. He has a PhD and presented a Channel 4 science show. He now performs a comedy/science/hula-hoop act ‘Dr Hula’. Suki Webster is a regular guest of The Comedy Store Players and has toured the world with ‘Paul Merton And His Impro Chums’. More recently she co-wrote ‘Paul Merton Looks at Alfred Hitchcock’ (BBC4/2) and a Morecambe and Wise tribute show (BBC1). She also cowrote, and was Assistant Director on, ‘Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood’ (BBC2). Don’t miss out on a fantastic and unique night of entertainment. If you’re unable to attend the Cheltenham event, you can still catch the act nearby – the chums are at Coventry, Swindon and Bristol on 2nd 11th and 19th November respectively. For further information and a full list of tour dates visit www.paulmerton.com.

The Local Answer
An education in entertainment Paul Merton – one of Britan’s best loved comedians – is well known for his improvisation skill. His humour is rooted in deadpan, surreal and sometimes dark comedy and he is considered by a number of critics and fellow entertainers to be among the nation’s greatest comedians. He is a regular guest on Radio 4’s ‘Just A Minute’ and is an established face on TV shows such as the hugely popular ‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘Room 101’, ‘Paul Merton Looks at Alfred Hitchcock’ (BBC4/2), ‘Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood’ (BBC 2) and his travel series for Channel Five in India, China, Europe and, more recently, ‘Paul Merton’s Adventures’ and the televised series of ‘Just A Minute’ (BBC2). Paul was born on 9 July 1957 in Parsons Green, London, to his English father – Albert Martin, a train guard on the London Underground – and his Irish mother, Mary Ann (neé Power).
Long-running banter Over many years appearing on ‘Have I Got News For You’, the viewing public have been entertained at times by Paul’s banter with fellow team captain Ian Hislop regarding their educational backgrounds. Ian became head boy at independent boarding school Ardingly College before reading English Literature at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, while Paul failed his ‘Eleven Plus’ before attending Wimbledon College, a Jesuitrun secondary school that had just become a comprehensive, where he achieved A-levels in English and History. After leaving school, Paul
worked at the Tooting employment office for seven years. Paul often claims he was inspired to go into comedy at an early age watching clowns at a circus, remembering: “I had no idea that adults could behave like that”. He gained his earliest professional credits under his birth name (Paul James Martin), including an appearance as a yokel in ‘Time’ – an episode of The Young Ones in 1984. On joining Equity he found the name Paul Martin was already taken, so he renamed himself after Merton – the district of London where he grew up. Though he had harboured serious ambitions of becoming a performing comedian since his school days, it wasn’t until April 1982, at the ‘Comedy Store’ in Soho, that his dream was realised. He recalls that on only his second or third night he ‘found’ the dour role that has influenced his comic approach ever since.
Paul will be performing with his ‘Impro Chums’ at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 19th October (see opposite page). For your chance to win a pair of tickets to this night of spontaneous wit, enter our draw by sending your name, address and telephone number to Impro Chums, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court, Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QS. Alternatively, email details to competitions@thelocalanswer.co.uk – please state ‘Impro Chums’ in the subject line. Closing date: Friday 11th October 2013.

Delicious Dishes Caramelised Tarts with Toffee Sauce
Ingredients: 300g/12oz puff pastry; 500g/1lb 4oz apples, such as Braeburn or Cox; 1⁄2 lemon; 75g/3oz soft brown sugar; 50g/2oz butter; 100ml/4floz double cream; caster sugar. Method: Toffee sauce – this can be made several days ahead, kept in the fridge and then gently warmed when ready to serve. 1 Heat the butter and brown sugar, stirring until dissolved. 2 Gently boil until the sugar turns golden brown. 3 Add the cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes until golden and thickened. Caremelised Tarts 1 Preheat oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. 2 Roll out pastry to 5mm/1⁄4in thick. Cut six 10cm/4in circles and knock up the sides with the back of a knife. Score a line with a knife 2cm/3⁄4 in from the
outside of each circle. Prick the inner area with a fork. Place on a baking sheet and return to the fridge. 3 Peel, core and slice 400g/1lb of the apples. Place in a saucepan with 15ml/1 tablespoon water and a good squeeze of lemon juice. Cook over a gentle heat until softened. Cool. 4 Thinly slice the remaining apple, removing the core but not the skin. Place a spoonful of the apple puree in the centre of each pastry circle. Spread to where the line is scored. Arrange the sliced apple over the top. Brush the pastry rim with milk, sprinkle with caster sugar and cook for 20 minutes. Serve with a scoop of ice-cream.

Withington and Our front cover this month shows a delightful landmark in the village of Withington – a stone crocodile head which jets water into a trough all year round. It was created in Victorian times and recently renovated by local a stonemason. Withington is a small Cotswold The Loca l village between Cheltenham and Cirencester straddling the River Coln. On the west bank of Withington the village rises, encompassing the manor house and the Grade I listed church of St Michael and All Angels which dates back to the 12th Century. In 2006 an archaeological dig was conducted in the village and televised by Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ programme. A family of moles had uncovered pieces of mosaic which were then noticed by local archaeologist Roger Box who called in the Time Team to investigate. They spent three days digging the site and uncovered a previously unknown Roman Villa. Just downsteam from the crocodile is Fossebridge – a pretty hamlet with four acres of gardens and a lake. Why not visit the crocodile and then take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Chedworth Woods – see this month’s ‘Short Walk’ on the next page. You could then, perhaps, warm yourself up and indulge in a superb lunch and refreshments at The Inn at Fossebridge – a charming 17th century coaching inn with a cosy bar and log fires. 1 These are the remains of one of the largest Romano-British villas in Britain. It is thought to have been inhabited as a country house over a period of 250 years. The location was chosen for its sheltered position, water supply, and communications. The first villa was built in the 2nd century but was later altered and enlarged some time in the 4th century, from which the present buildings date. The first remains were discovered by accident in 1864 by a gamekeeper who began to notice fragments of Roman paving and pottery among the rabbit burrows. A museum now houses finds from the site, and there are several impressive mosaics of varying quality, the remains of two bathhouses and hypocausts for underfloor heating.

This is a pleasant walk that includes the wooded banks of the River Coln. The Romans introduced large edible snails to Britain and they can still be seen in and around the villa.
A Use the car park near the villa. Walk back down the road to the gates on the right at the bottom of the hill and turn right along the track. Continue to the road and carry on a short way just past the house on the right. B Turn right up the steps into the wood. Cross the first track and turn right at a second track. After about 30yds (27m) bear half-left downhill to the main track in the valley. Turn right and follow this track up the valley to the open field. 2 The ancient Chedworth Woods have a great diversity of flora and fauna. Ancient woods are those which were in existence before 1600 and because of this they tend to be very rich in wildlife. Bluebell, primrose and wood spurge can all be seen in the area as well as ramsons (wild garlic) and wild strawberry. There are also many woodland birds such as tawny owls, woodcock, nuthatch, blackcap, wood warbler and wren. In damp weather the large Roman snail which was introduced by the Romans might be spotted.
C At the entrance to the field, turn slightly left and head uphill across the field, aiming for the marker posts visible in the distance. Bear left slightly as you pass the two trees and join the road. D Turn right for ½ mile (800m) to a bridleway on the right just as the road starts to descend steeply. E Turn right and follow the track, passing the buildings on the right and walk through several gates. F As the track ends continue along the path which bears slightly right, just to the right of the gate straight ahead. Follow the path into the wood and continue downhill. Stay on the path to a stile and then follow the track straight ahead for a Chedworth short distance. At the road turn left back to the car. www.TheLocalAnswer.co.uk

Leader’s Life
with Councillor Paul James Leader of Gloucester City Council
Turntable or Triangle? A very small part of my job as Council Leader is approving street names for new developments in Gloucester. I don’t decide them alone. Council officers suggest the names based on a series of rules – i.e. they can’t normally be named after people who are still alive and they can’t be too similar to anything else that already exists locally. The Royal Mail are consulted and so are local councillors. Most of the time I accept the suggestions put to me. I was pleased to see that the former Gloscat site on Brunswick Road is to revert to being called Friars Orchard – the name it had when my old school, The Crypt, was there until the early 1940s. But I don’t always rubber-stamp the suggestions. The road serving the new development at the Railway Triangle was due to be called Turntable Way (for good reasons – it was a railway turntable, but I thought this sounded a bit like a record player!). I put it to the public, had a huge response and we called it Triangle Way. The development of the former Gardner Denver site on Barton Street is called Diamond Jubilee Close because construction started during the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s reign. The original name put forward was uninspiring Bluetree Close. We
The Railway Triangle – Gloucester
are one of only a few places in the country to have a road named after the Diamond Jubilee. Cavalier Close was rejected as a name for the Musket development in Matson because Gloucester was a Parliamentarian stronghold in the civil war. I vetoed the name Infants Close for a small development adjoining Longlevens Infants School in Cheltenham Road. I went out to the public and we settled on The Haylings, after a former local grocery shop. So a lot of thought goes into these names – like some of the older streets in the city named after famous Gloucester figures such as Massey Road in Barton, Robert Raikes Avenue in Tuffley, Thomas Stock Gardens in Abbeymead or Whitfield Street in the city centre, or the Inner Relief Road named after our twin cities – Metz, Trier, Gouda and St Ann. There will be plenty of street naming to do in the years ahead. If you’ve got an idea for someone or something we should commemorate, please let me know.

The invention of British Summer Time Amazingly it has been over 100 years since British Summer Time or BST was first proposed to Britain. Now it is just a twice-yearly ritual that we change the clocks, forward and back. William Willett, a keen horse rider was so incensed by the waste of morning daylight hours during the summer that he rallied all his life, even publishing a pamphlet called ‘The Waste of Daylight’ to encourage people out of bed earlier in summer, utilising the daylight hours. He died in 1915 with the government still refusing to officially accept BST, but it was just the following year that Germany introduced this system and Britain then followed suit in May 1916 – just a few weeks after – and we have been re-setting time ever since. The British government passed the Summer Time Act of 1916 swiftly and the first day of British Summer Time started on 21 May 1916, which was widely reported in the press. In 1968 the clocks went forward in March but did not return to Greenwich Mean Time in the autumn entering a three-year experiment called British Standard Time, staying one hour ahead of Greenwich until 1971 when the government decided to return to the original British Summer Time. Opinions still remain divided whether British Summer Time is a good thing – no-one can agree whether it is a solution or not – so the debate continues ...
Don’t forget ‘BST’ ends on Saturday 26th October 2013

October is a good time to get on with the tidying up process in the borders. The soil will still be warm and moist, ideal for planting. Continue lifting and dividing clumps of perennials that have grown too big. Swap amongst your friends to increase your diversity of plants. Everyone loves something for nothing! One word of warning – it may be prudent to take all the soil from the roots of a plant from a friend’s garden, washing them off will ensure that you get rid of any perennial weeds like bindweed, so do be careful. Bindweed will have died down so you may not realise it is there, likewise the dreaded Ground Elder. Collect up fallen leaves and compost in a separate ‘leaf bin’. This can be either chicken wire wrapped round four stout posts set at the corners (have two made and use one whilst the other is rotting down as it takes a good year to create leaf-mold) or, if you don’t have the space, put the leaves into black bin-liners – half fill the bags and prick some holes in, then store somewhere outside. Evergreen leaves don’t compost well but would need shredding (things like holly, laurel and Mahonia). Don’t let leaves lie on heathers and dwarf conifers and other small shrubs as they can cause disease – they shouldn’t be left on the lawn either. A good collection method on the grass is to use the lawnmower, which shreds them at the same time. However, if deciduous leaves are lying on the flower borders in which all the perennials have died back they can be left – by springtime they will have disappeared if the worms are doing their job! Mulch is a term that is bandied about by garden articles, and it basically means a layer of material laid over the earth to keep moisture in and deter weeds. The composted leaves you make are perfect to lay down around Hydrangeas, and especially other plants which prefer an acid soil (pH of under 7) like Azaleas, and Camellias. Bark can also be used, as can gravel, slate chippings, etc. The golden rule is to make sure the soil underneath is moist before you lay down the ‘mulch’, and to remove perennial weeds such as dandelions. As always, if you fancy a change in your garden – be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design – do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

Interest rate dilemma The appointment earlier this year of Mark Carney (pictured below) as the new Governor of the Bank of England renewed speculation about the long-term future of interest rates. Carney has stated that they will remain at their record low level until he sees signs that the economy is on a sustainable course of recovery. He defines that by reference to unemployment levels. So until unemployment drops below 7%, interest rates stay as they are. Is everybody happy with Carney’s announcement? Millions will be, but not all. Actually, pleasing everyone is impossible, but we’ll ignore that for the purposes of this debate! For those who have borrowed money to fund their business ambitions or to buy their homes, low interest rates have been critical to success, and at times survival, during recent difficult economic times. It’s sad, but it’s true, that as we come out of difficult trading times and businesses expand, there will be more failures than in the last few years. Interest rates need to remain low to give businesses the chance to succeed. But what about savers? With inflation running at 2.8% per annum, a standard rate tax payer has to earn 3.5% just to keep pace with inflation every year. With interest rates at record lows, finding this sort of return, without taking risks that may be inappropriate, is a challenge. No, Mr Carney can’t please everyone. But at least he’s told us what to expect for the foreseeable future. Roger Downes FCA – Managing Director

SAVE A LIFE YOU ONLY HAVE MINUTES TO
During September The Local Answer hosted training for the new Community Public Access Defibrillation equipment that was installed at the Ullenwood Court Business Park. Ullenwood Court owner Michael Cuttell (pictured below) arranged for the installation and training to take place as part of his continual enhancement of the facilities tenants greatly benefit from. He said: “Like the representatives of all the companies attending, I’m extremely grateful to Martin Fagan from The Community Heartbeat Trust for the training sessions he has delivered. “Everyone was surprised by how easy the equipment is to use. It talks through, step by step, everything you need to do until the emergency services arrive – giving the patient the best possible chance of survival. Hopefully we’ll never need to use the equipment but, in the interests of our tenants well-being, it’s on site if required. One of the key messages highlighted by Martin was – ‘the only thing you can do wrong is to do nothing’. This was highlighted by the fact that you can’t hurt anyone – the defibrillator will only provide a shock if it is required. Martin explained what the equipment is, what it does, and provided statistics that demonstrate just how important it can be: A defibrillator delivers an electrical current through the chest which aims to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm allowing it to pump again. An AED is a portable defibrillator which uses intelligent technology to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. When applied to a patient, a sequence of voice
commands and screen messages guide the user through the defibrillation process. This means the machine can be used safely by people with no medical background. â—? The cabinet storing the AED can only be opened by a member of the public with an access code given by the emergency services via a 999 call.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) happens between 140,000 and 200,000 times a year in the UK, making it one of the UK’s largest killers. The potential for saving a life is dependent on time – the faster medical help is administered, the better the chance of survival. To achieve a positive outcome when dealing with SCA, medical assistance must be given within 4-5 minutes of the event. In remote areas it is sometimes difficult to get an emergency medical team to arrive on scene quickly and this is
why Community Public Access Defibrillators (cPAD) play a vital role in helping save lives in rural communities. Statistics show that the survival rate after a SCA with CPR alone is 5%. By using a defibrillator, the survival rate increases to 50%.’ Martin said: “The very best people to save a life are those already on the scene. You cannot make the situation worse, only better, and may give someone a chance to live. Call 999 immediately and get the ambulance service to help. They will talk you through what needs to be done and, if required, tell you where to access a defib unit – usually stored in high visibility yellow cabinets for easy recognition. CHT works closely with the ambulance service and together we can save lives!
