Welcome to our September issue and, for all you adults eagerly awaiting the start of the new school year – don’t worry, it won’t be long now! Although the school holidays are almost over, there’s still plenty going on in and around the city to entertain all age groups. Early in the month there’s ‘Gloucester Day’, ‘Gloucester History Festival’ and ‘Heritage Weekend’ – read about them in Councillor Paul James’ column and our ‘What’s On’ section. Another huge event in the county’s calendar, is the Newent Onion Fayre, which takes place on the 14th September. This is a fantastic day out for the whole family – see centre pages for details. Gloucester Rugby kick off their home campaign of the new Aviva Premiership season on Saturday 7th September when they host Sale Sharks. Let’s hope the Cherry & Whites can get off to a winning start. If you haven’t equipped your kids with all the stationery they’ll need for the new term yet, why not pop along to What! Store – see their advert for a great selection. Our ‘What’s On’ section also includes events for October to help you plan ahead. We’ve also got three fabulous venues – Bowden Hall, Holiday Inn and The Capital Venue – promoting their festive party nights for those who wish to get organised in advance.

Expelling the myths about confidence I had a conversation with a friend recently who said “I would love to be more confident”. “What is stopping you?” I replied. She stopped and thought for a few moments – “I don’t believe in myself, but until now I hadn’t really thought about that fact!” she exclaimed. I have heard many tales, and read a lot of research over the years saying men are naturally more confident than women, and extraverts are more confident than introverts, but in reality we are all different. Some fly through exams whilst others of us feel like running off until the exam is over. In job interviews some people perform really well whilst others become tongue tied. When we start a relationship with someone it can be both exciting and nerve wracking, so much so we want to disappear into a giant marshmallow! So why is that? The reasons are different – self confidence is a psychological state in which we believe in our capabilities to do something. The components of self confidence include motivation, self efficacy (i.e. a person’s belief that they can succeed in a situation), levels of self esteem, our personal beliefs, our environment as well as our innate personality (the nature/nurture debate) and depends on whether our outlook on life is positive or negative. “So how can I improve my confidence?” my friend asked. “Start by doing four things,” I replied: • Think with confidence • Talk with confidence • Know what you are good at • Work on what you need to improve and believe you can do it. That might sound an easy solution, but how straightforward it is in reality will depend on your starting point. If you would like some more insight into building your levels of confidence, please get in touch with me ...

September is one of my favourite months – and not just because it’s when I tend to take my main annual holiday. It comes after the Council breaks for its recess (no formal meetings, but that doesn’t mean we stop working) so, in theory at least, we should all be relaxed and refreshed by the time September comes. It’s also the start of the new school year, the start of a new rugby season and a big month for events in Gloucester. Without wishing to jinx anything, it also tends to be a month of fairly good weather. I’ve got high hopes for Gloucester Rugby in the new season. Under Nigel Davies’ leadership, the squad has started to gel and that process will, I’m sure, continue. With the announcement of the Rugby World Cup coming to Gloucester in 2015, wouldn’t it be great if our boys were challenging for top honours by then! A return to Heineken Cup rugby this season is a good start. September is also the month of the Gloucester History Festival. It kicks off with Gloucester Day on Saturday 7th September. Gloucester Day historically marks the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester during the English Civil War. The day, reintroduced by Town Crier Alan Myatt, consists of the Mayor-making ceremony for the Mock Mayor of Barton, a Gloucester Day service, a Parade which brings the community together and a banquet in the evening. The following weekend is Heritage Weekend, where dozens of historic buildings which are closed for the rest of the year throw their doors open to the public. Our offering is consistently one of the best in the country thanks to the efforts of Gloucester Civic Trust. The Sheriff’s Assize of Ale - a medieval pub crawl for charity - takes place on Saturday 14th. Running until the 20th September is a series of history talks at Blackfriars Priory, which includes topics such as Gloucester Prison, Nuclear Power, Richard III and the Tailor of Gloucester. For more information visit www.gloucesterhistoryfestival.co.uk. Sometimes we get criticised for not making enough of Gloucester’s rich history. This is our chance to prove the critics wrong. Have a great September.

WIN TICKETS! Out of Joint returns to the Everyman Theatre this month following their recent successes with Our Country’s Good and Top Girls, with a new play by Stroud-based writer Dawn King. Set in a world of secrets and subterfuge, Ciphers begs the question: how well can you ever know someone who lies for a living?

“Most of what she told me about herself is a cover story. She is a British Intelligence Officer. How far would she go to get information out of me? The answer is, quite far.” Justine is found dead. Her sister Kerry sets out to discover what happened to her and finds herself submerged in a world full of secrets that makes her question who Justine really was. Dawn King’s debut play Foxfinder was “thrillingly original” (Time Out), “a contender for new play of the year” (The Guardian) and a“spell-binding dystopian parable” (Independent). Now, in Ciphers, she has written a smart and provocative thriller about spies, double agents, and the opaqueness of the human soul. Out of Joint is the internationally acclaimed touring company founded and directed by Max Stafford-Clark. It has premiered plays by numerous brilliant writers including Caryl Churchill, David Hare and Mark Ravenhill. Origins of the Newent Onion Fayre Newent Onion Fayre is a one day street festival of food, drink and merriment which attracts almost 15,000 visitors. At the heart of the festival is the ‘Onion Show’ – unique in the UK. The whole town becomes a party during what has become recognised as a celebration of the first day of harvest at the end of the summer. Newent, originally the site of a manor belonging to the Abbey of Cormeilles in Normandy, quickly grew into a sizeable community when King Henry III granted the new town of ‘Noent’ a market and two annual fayres by charter. By the end of the 13th century it was well established as a thriving market town where Welsh drovers, passing through to Gloucester, would purchase local onions at the town’s newly established Onion Fayre which survived to the early part of the twentieth century when, unfortunately, the war years saw its demise.

From 10am Saturday 14th September 2013

Fairground Rides • Dog Show Farm Animals • Belly Dancers Street Entertainers • Pipe Band Morris Men • Food Festival and much, much more! The modern fayre encompasses much more than the original version, and is now a fine showcase for locally grown vegetables, fruit and other more elaborate foods – plus a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic juices and other beverages. Since its revival in 1996 the fayre has grown considerably to become a fantastic crowd-pulling National event. The organisers are proud of Newent Onion Fayre’s status as Gloucestershire’s largest free one-day festival and it’s celebration of the magnificent onion! With over 100 stands, live music, entertainment, food, drink and, of course, the one and only Newent Onion Show, the event is a wonderful day out for the whole family.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.” Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118.

In t he G arden with Julia Smith

September is often thought of as coming to the end of the year in the garden, but it is also the time for planning and planting bulbs for the coming year. It is a good time to order bulbs from catalogues such as Avon bulbs (www.avonbulbs.co.uk) who stock a delicious range of the more unusual bulbs and who constantly win gold at Chelsea for their amazing displays. Tulips are best left until November to plant but other bulbs such as narcissus or crocus can be put in towards the end of September. Another group of plants to think about including in your garden are the herbaceous clematis. These plants are invaluable at this time of the year, and as they are non-clinging they wind their way through the borders sprinkling their pretty flowers amongst the other border plants therefore lifting the whole display. Try ‘Arabella’ with its stunning purple-blue flowers which will keep flowering from June to September, and actually does very well in a pot if you are short of space. Another good idea is to order sweetpea seeds ready for planting next month. Weather permitting, you can get on with lifting and dividing any perennials that have got too congested and have stopped flowering as well as they had been. This can be done in spring but by then things can get very busy so it is one less job to do! Lift the large clumps and with a pair of garden forks back to back, prise them apart into smaller pieces. Discard the woody, congested centre of the clumps and replant the healthy pieces that have a good root system, as well as any new shoots, into compost-enriched soil with some bone meal added. These will give a good show the following summer. Now is also a good time to cover small ponds with netting to keep the falling leaves out as the trees begin to turn. I usually leave a passage through for the toads so that they don’t get all caught up! Cut asparagus ferns to the ground and get rid of them as they may be harbouring the eggs of the asparagus beetle. Apply a balanced feed such as blood, fish and bone meal over the soil surface to help ensure a good crop next year. As always, if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design, do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

Borrowing from the Bank of Mum & Dad For many young people, the first step onto the property ladder is one of the biggest they will ever take. Years ago, we all saved up and when we had enough money we put down a deposit and the building society gave us the balance based on our ability to repay it using a multiple of around 3 times our salary. House prices were at a level that made the equation work. Over the last few decades and into the early part of this century, house prices and salary levels grew substantially apart to the point that the original equation was broken. Funders initially solved the riddle by lending at higher multiples of salary, but that was never sustainable and was one of the fundamental causes of the credit crunch nearly five years ago. So now we are back to ‘normal’ levels of lending, which means that the equation is again out of balance. The government is trying to assist with its ‘Help to Buy’ scheme, which is basically a good idea but it doesn’t answer all of the issues. The first of these is the lack of suitable properties. The housing market has been tough for a long time now and the government shows no signs of the political will that is needed to create an adequate supply. Second is saving for the deposit. Which is where the Bank of Mum and Dad comes in. Latest research suggests that £2 billion is raised every year from parents helping their children to take this first step. Parents borrow against their own property, dip into savings or work longer hours to provide the money needed – an average of £17,000 per property transaction. Even this is not sustainable in the long term and it is available, of course, only in those families where Mum & Dad can afford it. The real answer lies in stimulating the housing market, but that is a subject all of its own. Roger Downes FCA – Managing Director

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

Dear Readers, I hope you are all well and have enjoyed the summer break. I am extremely pleased that my boys are going back to school very soon! As you will recall I have spoken before about the Avenger Task Force that was Neil Smith created in April to support our Gloucester Inspector communities and young people who could be exposed to gang-related activity in Gloucester. We have carried out a vast amount of work since April and are continuing to make good progress with our key partners. We have engaged with many young people and their families and this is really paying dividends. On a wider scale our aim is to help build stronger relationships with all of our communities, which is why we are holding a community event at the Guild Hall in Gloucester on Friday, 20th September. A charitable organisation will be attending and carrying out a workshop based on the British film about gang culture “One Mile Away”. Members of the cast will show clips and discuss their involvement, highlighting that being involved in gangs and gang-related activity is hugely detrimental. The event is aimed at young people and their parents who live in Gloucester. If you would like to attend or require further information please contact me via the ATF secure email address: ATF@Gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk.
