The pretty flower on the front cover was not chosen simply for its aesthetic vibrancy – all is explained in our ‘Did You Know?’ column on page 7. The whole county benefited from some great weather last month and a much-needed boost to revenue thanks to the Cheltenham Race Festival which attracted a record 220,000+ enthusiasts. Whether you soaked up the atmosphere or loathed the congestion it was a positive boost for many. Towards the end of March the Chancellor made his budget announcement and we’ve got the initial reactions from two local estate agents in our Property section on page 18. Let’s hope Mother Nature is kind to us with the weather during April so everyone – not just the kids off school – can enjoy a fabulous Easter break and St George’s Day celebrations on the 23rd!

Roast Shoulder of Lamb
with Helen Kingscott
A TREAT FOR EASTER ~ Serves 6-8 Cooking the lamb until it’s deliciously tender means you can shred it straight off the bone, and using the vegetable trivet it’s cooked with to make your gravy gives a wonderful flavour. Ingredients: 1 shoulder of lamb about 2kg, bone in; 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary; Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper; Olive oil; 2 carrots, roughly chopped; 3 celery sticks, roughly chopped; 2 red onions, roughly chopped; 4 garlic cloves; 1 tbsp plain flour; 2x500g tubs of chicken or vegetable stock, or use stock cubes/your own stock; fresh mint for gravy and garnish. Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 220C, fan 200C, gas 7. Using a small, sharp knife, make small incisions over the top of the lamb. Snap little sprigs off the rosemary and poke into the incisions. Season the lamb with sea salt and pepper, drizzle well with olive oil, then rub the seasoning into the meat. Place the carrots, celery, red onions and garlic cloves into a large roasting tray, then pop the lamb on top. Roast in the hot oven for 15 minutes, then turn down to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4 and continue to roast for another 11⁄2 hours. 2 After this time, remove the lamb from the oven and transfer to another roasting tray and return to the oven to cook for a further 30 minutes or until tender and falling apart. 3 Meanwhile, spoon off most of the fat from the tray of vegetables, then put the tray on the hob over a medium heat. Sprinkle the flour into the tray and use

a wooden spoon to mix in and scrape up all the sticky goodness from the bottom of the tray. Holding the tray steady, use a potato masher to roughly mash up the vegetables, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer and leave to thicken. 4 When the lamb is ready, remove from the oven, cover with kitchen foil and a clean tea towel and leave to rest until ready to serve. Once the gravy is of a good consistency, carefully pour the contents of the tray through a course sieve into a jug. Use a wooden spoon to push all the goodness of the vegetables through the sieve, discarding what’s left behind. Roughly chop the mint leaves and stir half through the gravy. 5 Shred your lamb using a couple of forks, then serve with crushed new potatoes and spring greens (or vegetables of your choice) and drizzle the gravy over the top. Scatter with a few remaining mint leaves.

Is ‘modern day’ Easter all about fluffy bunnies and an overdose of chocolate, or is it a time for quiet reflection? For Christians, Easter is a celebration of Jesus rising from the grave three days after his crucifixion on Good Friday. It is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox – typically coinciding with Jewish Passover. Easter Sunday is preceded by 40 days of Lent. Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten during Lent until Good Friday marked with a cross. Forklore says sharing one will ensure friendship throughout the year and, if given to someone who is ill, will help them recover. From a more secular view Easter is associated with fertility and rebirth. The Easter bunny most likely evolved from the German tradition of the “Oschter Haws” or “Easter Hare” which laid brightly coloured eggs for well-behaved children to find – much like our Easter-egg hunts today. Thought to be a time of new beginnings, Easter was a time to wear new clothes – a bonnet was a popular culture where ladies would decorate their hats with brightly coloured ribbons and flowers as depicted in the 1948 musical ‘Easter Parade’.

You may ask what is the significance of The Passiflora or ‘Passion flower’ image for our Easter cover. The flower was known by the Spanish as “La Flor de las cinco Llagas” or ‘the flower with the five wounds’ refering to the passion of Jesus in Christian theology.
Symbolism of The Passiflora The pointed tips of the leaves depict the Holy Lance, the tendrils represent the whips used in the flagellation of Christ. Five petals and five sepals are the ten faithful apostles excluding Judas Iscariot the betrayer and St. Peter the denier. The corona filaments which can number more than one hundred are the crown of thorns. The hammer or the holy grail are represented by the chalice-shaped ovary with its receptacle. The three stigma represent the three nails and the five anthers below them are the five wounds Christ suffered. Heaven and purity are symbolised by the blue and white colours of the flower.

Problem behaviour or a behavioural problem? This might sound like just a semantic argument but an animal behaviourist would describe the former as your classic naughty, unruly, boisterous dog, while the latter is more the significant behavioural or mental issues such as anxiety, overt aggression, marked fearfulness etc. You often read in the news that as many as one in four of us will suffer from some sort of mental illness during our lifetime – be it anxiety, obsessive behaviour, depression, etc. – and it’s thought a similar number of our four legged companions may suffer in silence with us. Behavioural problems in dogs and cats include various anxiety tendencies, such as firework phobias, separation anxiety – even agarophobic tendencies. We also see many cases of aggression either to other dogs or to humans. Obsessive/compulsive behaviours are common – e.g. manic tail chasing in dogs or fur licking and overgrooming in cats. In cats we also see anxiety causing urinating or spraying in the house and it can even trigger a physical illness such as cystitis. Sadly, dogs and cats are also not immune from senility with ‘canine cognitive dysfunction’ or doggy dementia increasingly common.
Prevention is better than cure! For many behavioural issues the best preventative advice is to start controlled exposure early in a pets life – issues can arise when pets are very young. There is a critical period of learning and socialisation that takes place in the first 6 months of a pet’s life. Anxiety disorders often come about later in life because key exposure to noises/other dogs/farm animals was missing early on, or a particularly unpleasant exposure left a lasting impression. For example a dog that doesn’t meet with lots of different dogs when it’s a puppy is more likely to be fearful or aggressive when it is older. A dog that was never left on its own when it was young is more likely to suffer separation anxiety later in life. Dogs and cats that don’t get enough exercise or stimulation are more likely to be destructive or develop compulsive behavioural traits from boredom and frustration. Once a behavioural problem has become established there are still plenty of training and treatment options. Positive reinforcement is the cornerstone of dealing with many anxiety issues – i.e. trying to create a positive link with whatever’s upsetting your pet. Controlled exposure to the causes of anxiety, while giving treats or rewards for remaining calm, can start to break down a negative association. There are dietary supplements that can increase serotonin levels (the bodies calming hormone), dog and cat pheromone sprays (DAP and Feliway), antianxiety medications may be appropriate and sometimes even a lower protein diet can help. The options are many and varied depending on the problem and the pet. If you are having a behavioural issue with your furry friend come in and talk to us about what training or treatment options might help. It is said that as many as 2/3rds of dogs that are taken to animal shelters are surrendered because of behavioural problems. Many of these problems are preventable, manageable or treatable. Of course, some of us are also blind to our pet’s less attractive behavioural traits, fortunately neither of mine have any to talk of!

The River Leach is a tributary of the Thames but in the early part of its course it is seasonal, running above ground only when there is sufficient rainfall. This walk follows a winding valley where the elusive river disappears underground and emerges again beneath deep, weed-covered pools. The countryside here is quiet, offering a chance to escape the crowds and traffic. A Park in Eastleach Turville and walk through the village past the church to the crossroads. 1 This simple stone clapper footbridge is the photographic focal point of the village. It is particularly attractive in spring amid banks of daffodils. It is called Keble's Bridge after the famous local rector, John Keble, who became leader of the Oxford Movement in the Church of England in the early 19th century. The two villages: Eastleach Turville and Eastleach Martin sit either side of the pretty River Leach with the parish churches of each village only a couple of hundred yards apart linked by the clapper footbridge.

New energy efficient scheme launched for Gloucestershire In keeping with the company’s overall objective to consistently improve its service, over the last few months Emperor Windows have been piloting a new scheme to the benefit of both customers and the environment. With Emperor Windows manufacturing their own products, the trial period has been necessary to confirm they could manage the additional capacity required before launching their new ‘Energy Saving Scheme’ on a full scale. Company representative Gareth Ansell is delighted with the results. He said: “The pilot has been an overwhelming success, and I’d like to thank all customers who have had recent installations. We’re only interested in delivering the very best products and services, so proving we could cope with the workload – both in the factory and through our team of ‘in house’ fitters – was extremely important to us. We can now proudly announce the official launch of our scheme.” Still waiting for any announcement of a national Government-backed energy saving plan that may further reduce the ‘upgrade’ costs for homeowners, Emperor Windows are using the revenue they receive from recycling the replaced uPVC and glass to The Local Answer

A wood full of the beautiful nodding heads and scent of bluebells is a quintessentially English experience and they will be coming out this month. Unfortunately they are under threat from the Spanish bluebell which is grown in gardens as it was considered more decorative than its English cousin. How to tell them apart? Well the English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) has scented flowers borne on one side of the stem, the anthers are creamcoloured and unequeal, and the flower spike is nodding. The Spanish bluebell (H.hispanica) has unscented flowers borne on all sides of the stem. It has blue equal anthers and an upright flower spike. So take care with what you plant (under no circumstances harvest any from the wild!), sourcing them from reputable retailers and you too could enjoy the fragrance of your own little bluebell patch. Start feeding the soft fruit in the garden – strawberries and raspberries etc. can do with a balanced general fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone or Growmore applied at about 70g per square metre. This will supply potassium (k) for flower and fruit production, nitrogen (n) for foliage and phosphorus (p) for strong roots. As daffodils finish flowering the faded flowerheads can be removed. The small daffodils which are being grown to naturalise can be left to form seedheads. Don’t cut off the foliage – it needs at least 6 weeks dying to replenish the bulb underneath so it can flower the following year. Don’t tie it up in strange bundles with elastic bands as this can damage the leaves as well as being very odd-looking. Try sowing a sprinkling of hardy annual seeds like annual poppies or Love-in-a-Mist through the flower border in a sunny position. Night Scented Stocks can be sown as well to fragrance the garden in summer evenings. They are not much to look at but are delicious to smell – put them by windows or patios to enjoy. This could be a good time to buy winter flowering trees and shrubs – prices may be reduced in garden centres – giving you a good show next winter. This is also a good time to plant evergreens into well prepared soil with a balanced fertilizer added. Make sure you keep them well watered during the summer if it is dry. Begin feeding the lawn in April when growth starts again. Apply a proprietary spring/summer lawn fertiliser in two applications. It should be high in nitrogen to encourage the grass to grow nice and green.

Backing a winner After months of appalling weather, the sun finally shone on Gloucestershire in March – in time for the National Hunt festival at Prestbury Park. Tens of thousands of people flocked to the county, not only to enjoy the Sport of Kings, but also to sample the delights that the local area has to offer. There’s plenty to see and do in Gloucestershire from the history of our major towns to more idyllic rural settings in the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. But like any hungry child, the local economy needs feeding. And it’s occasions such as the National Hunt festival that provide our county with much needed sustinence. Horse racing is not Gloucestershire’s only festival, of course, with music, arts, literature, tall ships and many more attractions playing their part in putting the county on the map and feeding our local economy. But it’s the activity at Prestbury Park every March that seems to provide a major impetus at just the right time – as Spring dawns and the sun begins to shine. That was certainly the case this year, with pubs, restaurants, hotels etc. all happy to put behind them the months of flooding and poor weather generally in order to welcome hungry (and thirsty!) punters. Hopefully it will help them to recover some of the lost revenue that they will have experienced in that period. There are two ways in which the local economy receives a financial boost. One is the influx of external money brought in by festivals such as the horse racing. The second is for businesses and people in the county to support their own economy by buying, shopping and employing locally. You would be amazed at the skill sets and facilities that are available without you having to go outside the county in search of them. And if you are running a business locally, make the most of the opportunities that are presented to you. Don’t moan about the number of people attending these festivals, work out how they can benefit your business and capitalize on the chance. The Rugby World Cup comes to the county in 2015 – there’s something else that you might be able to make work to your benefit. Embrace it all and back a winner!

I am writing this just before the week starts so hopefully we will all be well recovered and did not experience any dramas during the Festival by the time you read this. Today has been a ‘meetings’ day for me with six meetings rolling from one to another – which is as much fun as you can imagine! To give you an idea of some of the things I deal with, here’s a snap shot: ● Welfare of an officer following an assault. ● Discussing a small spike in robbery offences and a plan around catching the offender. ● Chatting with our local store detectives and their concerns and hopes for the future. ● Discussing the hub at Charlton Kings Parish Council, its future and our hopes to enhance it. ● Talking to the Town Centre Management Team around development and the beggar issue. ● Coordinating future operations for today and tasking officers appropriately. And if that wasn’t a busy enough day – when I was walking out of one meeting a chap that was ‘wanted’ walked across my path. Needless to say he is now in the cells awaiting his solicitor – always a nice feeling to lock a burglar up. Talking of burglars, and thieves in general, don’t forget to report suspicious matters to us. Do so as quickly as possible and give as good a description as you can – such as age, clothing and direction of travel. I know it’s hard, but don’t forget your phones have all got cameras on nowadays and a picture paints a thousand words – but be careful they don’t see you taking it! All this information helps us to help you, and keeps you as safe as possible. These thieves are out there, so please help us to make life as difficult as possible for them. Keep ’em locked!
