We all need a roof over our heads, and our homes can often be the largest single investment we will ever make – so it makes sense that we should protect this investment.
If your roof’s not protected then what is? Your roof is under constant attack from the weather which, together with the menace of moss and algae growth, has the potential to lead to significant damage to the inside of your home.
So, what’s the solution? ...

Welcome to July ... ... and welcome to the first ‘Gloucestershire North’ edition of The Local Answer. Summer is well and truly here and this first issue has plenty of fun activities, events, competitions and recipes to help you make the most of the gorgeous weather. If you enjoy dining alfresco at this time of year, why not make it ‘Cocktail Time’ too – see our new feature and enjoy some food and fizz in the sun. Fancy cooking outside? We have a fantastic competition this month to win a BBQ worth a whopping £475 courtesy of The Spa-Kling Pool Company. Gloucester’s Café René are hosting the 12th Rhythm and Blues Festival at the end of the month – a great event for the whole family. The festival also raises money for charity – this year they will again help Macmillan Cancer Support. The Local Answer is involved in fundraising too this month, as we encourage readers to join us in a ‘Barn Appeal’ on behalf of Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Association.

Cherry Bakewell Pudding
Delicious Dishes with Helen Kingscott
A great twist on the traditional Bakewell Tart with seasonal cherries Ingredients: 900g cherries, pitted; 2 tbsp cherry brandy (optional); 4-5 tbsp red cherry jam; 1-2 tbsp sliced or flaked almonds. Toss the cherries with the cherry brandy, if using, and jam. Tip into a shallow ovenproof baking dish. 2 Put all of the Bakewell topping ingredients in a bowl and, using an electric hand whisk, mix them together for 2 minutes. 3 Spoon the topping over the fruit in the baking dish. 4 Scatter the almonds on top of the pudding. SIX FANTASTIC COMPETITIONS INSIDE
FR ch 20 EE 09
GREAT FOOD, SERVICE & ENTERTAINMENT
The Local Answer has gone from strength to strength since the first issue (above) in March 2009. Initially serving the ‘Charlton Kings & Leckhampton’ areas of Cheltenham – with 5,000 copies distributed – this new Gloucestershire North edition increases our circulation to 105,000 copies every month, delivering 100,000 of these direct to homes across Gloucestershire. The publication was launched to satisfy the requirements of advertisers needing to convey their messages to residents in the area, and readers searching for local services. Therefore, we focused on key aspects that we believed would make the publication work – the best distribution, the best quality of content and presentation for a magazine of its type and, of course, extremely competitive rates (see left). The Local Answer
Our loyal advertisers were only going to get a return on their investment if our non-paying clients – you the readers – ‘used’ the magazine. Fortunately we seem to have got more things right than we’ve got wrong for both readers and advertisers alike. Growing to our current situation – delivering to 20 times as many households as when To advertise call 01242 510500
we started – wouldn’t have been possible without people appreciating what the publication brings to them. Behind this extreme level of success has been a fantastic team. As a ‘family-run’ business, the support from family members has been a key factor throughout – from helping to deliver the first issue, to being involved in all other aspects of the business as the company developed. With a committed and skilled office team, a growing army of loyal distributors, plus great print and facility suppliers – collectively we have delivered great success to so many of the county’s businesses and a wonderful ‘free’ monthly publication to residents. But we’re not finished yet! We will continually strive to improve the publication and its reach. New team members will be joining as we expand to the rest of the county. The next new edition of The Local Answer will serve the ‘Cotswolds’ – scheduled for publication in the autumn – and two further editions will be launched in 2015 as we complete our coverage of Gloucestershire. A lovely quiet walk, following the wooded valley of the pretty River Frome. This secluded part of the Cotswolds is particularly pleasant with its abundance of flowers in the woods and alongside the river. This upper part of the River Frome is called the Golden Valley, alluding not only to its autumn colours but also to its general beauty. Here the river’s tiny proportions and secluded banks totally contrast with its industrial setting just a few miles downstream, where it once powered the mills of the Stroud cloth industry.

COTSWOLD RDA BARN APPEAL
Help us make a difference The Local Answer has expanded! In addition to magazines serving the Cheltenham and Gloucester areas, we now have a new publication. As its name suggests, the ‘Gloucestershire North’ edition covers the north of the county, including Tewkesbury, Bishop’s Cleeve, Winchcombe, Bredon and the surrounding areas – increasing our monthly distribution to over 100,000 magazines delivered door-todoor, and extra copies available at 200+ outlets. Because of our growing presence in the community, Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Association have asked if we can help them with an urgent problem – to ensure local disabled people don’t miss out on the pleasure and therapeutic benefits they get from riding at the local charity’s school at Cheltenham Racecourse throughout the coming winter. Consequently, we are running a fundraising appeal on behalf of Cotswold RDA to help them with a special project to buy a barn and build pathways across their fields, and we’d be extremely grateful of any help you can give.
Benefiting disabled children and adults Cotswold RDA provides riding lessons for disabled children and adults all year round during term times, and riders from schools in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury, plus individuals from all over the county currently benefit from the charity’s work. The lessons help improve each rider’s confidence, as well as developing and supporting therapy and achievement. Most of you will remember the terrible weather that hit us at the end of 2013 – well that’s why this appeal is so important. The fields were extremely water-logged, making access to the riding school too difficult. In addition, the lack of grass and shelter for the ponies created its own set of problems. Thanks to the generosity of the Racecourse, a temporary solution to ‘homing’ the ponies was found while arrangements were made for most of Dave meets Dave: The Local Answer’s them to be accommodated Dave Kingscott meets Dave the pony. off site – dictating the

closure of the school for six weeks and disappointment for all the riders, which can have a detrimental effect on their physical and mental health. The charity is not funded by the government and, in addition to donations from the public, relies on revenue generated through its classes – so finances were badly affected by their cancellation. To avoid a repeat of the difficulties caused by last year’s weather, with the help of others, Cotswold RDA Pony Welfare Officer Debbie Powell has researched various preventative measures. They are now ready to implement plans for the purchase of a new barn capable of supporting all the ponies, and creation of a hard standing area surrounding the barn and a stone pathway connecting it to the fields and making access to the school possible.
Great deal of help needed Staff and volunteers have already started raising ‘barn’ money through car boot sales, tombolas and raffles. So far they’ve collected £4,700 of the £30,000 needed for the project, but it’s clear they’re going to need a great deal of help to raise funds quickly enough for the barn and path to be in place before winter. Readers often tell us how much they appreciate receiving The Local Answer and particularly enjoy the local stories and information it contains. On behalf of Cotswold RDA, The Local Answer is asking those of you who are able to, to support their fund-raising appeal as soon as possible. You can donate in two ways – either online via our ‘Virgin Giving’ page or by sending a cheque to The Local Answer – details at the bottom of the page. We look forward to updating you on the progress of the appeal and thank you in advance for any donations you may make.

FOR NEW CLIENTS during July 2014 with this advertisement

Welcome to our new column, bringing you fresh, exciting cocktails to enjoy with friends and family. This month’s cocktail is the classic Prosecco-based drink – the Bellini. The Bellini was created in 1948 by chief barman of Harry’s Bar in Venice, Giuseppe Cipriani. The cocktail is named after the 15th century artist Giovanni Bellini, because its soft pink colour reminded Cipriani of a saint’s toga depicted in one of Bellini’s paintings. The Bellini was a specialty in Harry’s Bar and, thanks to a French entrepreneur’s idea of creating trade of white peaches between New York and Venice, soon became popular at Harry’s Bar in New York. This classic cocktail can be modified for those who prefer Champagne, which is known as the ‘Bellini Royal’. Peaches are in season between July and September, so now is a perfect time to try our first fruity cocktail. If you’d like to make this cocktail at any other time of the year, tinned peaches can be used as an alternative. We aim to bring you a new cocktail every month, but if you’d like to suggest one, email your favourite recipe to editorial@thelocalanswer.co.uk – remember to include the story behind the cocktail. Ingredients: 200g fresh peaches, sliced (or tinned peaches); peach liqueur (Schnapps); chilled Prosecco; mint (optional). Method: 1 Place peaches in a food processor and blitz until smooth. 2 Divide the peach purée between your glasses – about 50ml worth in each one. 3 Add 25ml peach liqueur to each glass and top with Prosecco, stirring as you pour. Garnish with a slice of peach and a sprig of mint.

Ticks – minor pest or major parasite? To many people, ticks seem to embody all that is nasty and unpleasant about external parasites – big enough to send a shiver down the spine and the way they attach themselves aggressively to the skin sends some pet owners into fits of panicky hysteria! The humble tick generates quite a bit of hostility towards itself, and removing them generates even more excitement and anxiety. There are many suggested techniques for trying to detach the little blighters – I’ve heard of people trying to burn them off (please don’t try that), or smothering them in alcohol or Vaseline to suffocate them. Removing them with a tick remover is actually very easy but the thought of leaving the ‘mouth parts’ embedded in the skin leaves some people too scared to attempt removing them at home. Even identifying a tick causes some people problems. I had one pet owner bring their dog in after attempting to remove a tick from its tummy, complaining that every time they tried to pick it off the dog yelped. I had to explain to them that they had been trying to pick off their dog’s nipple! So the question remains – how much of an actual problem are ticks? The answer varies depending on where you live. Australia has Ixodes holocyclus – the paralysis tick – which is lethal, causing a progressive and eventual complete paralysis of its host. If the tick isn’t found in time and removed it will certainly kill – it is so dangerous that an anti-venom has been developed for severely affected cases. There are other types of ‘paralysis ticks’ in North America but, thankfully, we don’t have them in Europe. However, tick-borne diseases can be an issue, particularly on the continent. These are microscopic parasites, bacteria or viruses carried by the tick and passed on when it bites and feeds from a host. In Europe we are largely concerned with the bacterial infections of Ehrlichia and Borrelia and the blood parasite Babesia. Babesia and Ehrlichia can be serious but, fortunately, are confined to the continent. I have, however, seen cases in dogs that have returned from France and Spain. Borrelia or as it is more commonly known – Lyme’s disease – exists in the UK and can cause fever, joint swelling, lameness and even kidney and brain damage. Thankfully it’s quite rare and mostly confined to specific areas of the country including the New Forest, Dartmoor, Exmoor and East Anglia. Avoiding infection is achieved by good ‘tick prevention’ treatments, and prompt removal helps avoid infections being transmitted. Using a topical tick treatment or monthly tablet will kill ‘attached’ ticks, but they may still need to be removed. A cheap tick remover tool and appropriate tick preventatives can be obtained from your local vet clinic, along with advice on which is most appropriate for your pet.

Birthday with the ‘babies’ As always The Bird & Deer Park at Prinknash has got masses going on with the recent addition of a new baby Pygmy Goat – seen pictured with Park owner Melanie Meigh (above). The two new baby Reindeer calves called ‘Frozen’ and ‘Blanco’ are also getting on really well and have settled in nicely. Despite their enclosure being scheduled for refurbishment, they are coping well with the diggers and dumpers and seem to be taking this all in their stride. They will certainly enjoy the benefits of the work later in the year! The Gypsy Caravan is very much open for children’s party bookings, with seating for 14 children and two adults. In addition, the Mad Hatters Marquee seats up to 30 children and five adults. Both of these locations are a super place to celebrate your child’s birthday in amongst the birds and animals who really enjoy seeing the children. Of course it’s never easy to get your child away from that magical moment when they are enjoying a cuddle with the hand tame fallow deer or getting close to the peacocks for that special photo. For more information on any of the party locations please visit www.thebirdpark.com or call 01452 812727.
For all of you who are wondering about the new Visitor Centre, it’s coming along really well now and we are expecting the roof to be completed by mid July. For regular updates about the progress of the Visitor Centre, or for news on the birds and animals, follow The Bird & Deer Park on Twitter – @thebirdpark – or ‘like’ the Facebook page – The Bird and Deer Park.

courtesy of the Everyman Theatre The Everyman hosts George Orwell’s classic, 1984, presented by Headlong in association with Nottingham Playhouse and Almeida Theatre. April, 1984. 13.00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is watching him – and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye. Its ideas have become our ideas, and Orwell’s fiction is often said to be our reality. The definitive book of the 20th century is re-examined in a radical new staging exploring surveillance, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying. This new major production explores the world inside Winston Smith’s head, as well as the world without, and catches the euphoria and bliss buried deep underneath the cold face of Big Brother. Headlong’s version explores why Orwell’s gaze is as applicable to the here and now as it ever was. To book your tickets visit everymantheatre.org.uk or call the box office on 01242 572573. Café René in the heart of Gloucester will again be flying the R&B flag for the 2014 Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival. Situated within Greyfriars, Café René is the perfect place for this prestigious summer event in Gloucester, with not only a fabulous indoor venue but with an outdoor stage in a natural amphitheatre, perfect for performances. Now in its twelfth year at Café René, the Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival starts its exciting week of musical fulfilment on Monday 28th July with top toe-tapping musicians and bands throughout the week for seven days of great Rhythm and Blues music from the likes of: The DT’s, The Worried Men, and Tommy Allen’s Trafficker. We are proud to announce our weekend line up: Friday 1st August kicks off with Steve Ajao Blues Giants, followed by the incredible King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys. Saturday 2nd August is opened with Solid Gone, followed by Will Edmunds Trio, Funke and the Two Tone Baby, Lewis Creaven, The Clarksville Moutain Band, King Size Slim and 24 Pesos. Sunday 3rd August will commence with Damon T, followed by Steve Morrison, Matt Woosey Band, Keith Thompson Band, Spikedrivers and widely recognised as one of the finest Blues singers, Connie Lush. The grand weekend finale not only has superb musical content, but more entertainment throughout Saturday and Sunday can be enjoyed with face painting for the children and charity auctions. Satisfy your hunger with a pig roast or the famous ‘René BBQ’. The Café René ‘Real Ale & Cider Festival‘ with over 40 Real Ales and 20 Ciders and Perrys from Monday to Sunday is extremely popular with Ale connoisseurs and first timers alike. Each year the festival is FREE for all to enjoy, and is one of the last free entry Blues Festivals in the country. Throughout the week Café René raise money through various fundraising activities. Last year the sum raised was £2796.15 for Macmillan Cancer Support. They are always keen to better their fundraising efforts year on year so please do bring some sheckles for the charity buckets and help support them again.

‘The Arrival’ of a new landmark The Tewkesbury Battlefield Society is a group dedicated to the preservation, promotion and interpretation of history of the sites associated with The War of the Roses, which concluded in Tewkesbury. The Society commissioned the building of two sculptures entitled ‘The Arrival’, which mark the site of one of the crucial battles and celebrate the historic character of the town. The sculptures are located on Stonehill roundabout, where the A38 Gloucester Road meets the new Tewkesbury relief road on the southern edge of the town. This is where the Yorkist forces would have first spotted their Lancastrian opponents on the morning of the battle. The two armies are each represented by a monumentally-scaled oak sculpture. The Yorkists’ is a 5 metre high horse carrying a knight holding an 8 metre long stainless steel lance topped with a pennant. The defeated Lancastrians’ is a riderless horse with a similar lance resting across its back, standing opposite the mounted knight. The project has run since 1977, commencing with a design competition, followed by fundraising and finally the construction of the beautiful sculptures – a lasting memorial to signify the historic battle, and a new landmark for Tewkesbury. Free fruit & vegetables I have noticed the council have planted apple trees in the little gardens opposite ‘The Swan’ on the High Street (funny how my directions always involve a pub!). These gardens have had vegetables sown in them for a couple of years for the public to help themselves to, and the apple trees will be a lovely addition to this theme – what a good idea! Imagine just wandering through the park and collecting apples to take home. One of the annoying things about having apple trees at home though, especially cookers, is that sometimes you get so many – but at least there are plenty to share with others. Well done Cheltenham Parks Department!
Pest control Keep checking for the pesky red lily beetles and squash them! You may have problems with your Bay trees having yellowed, distorted and curled leaves at the tips – this is caused by Bay suckers, which are sap-feeding insects and very prevalent at this time of year. Prune off affected stems to keep it under control and remove the leaf litter from around the base of the Bay. I wouldn’t spray with anything, as you will want to use the leaves in cooking. However, if you don’t use the leaves to cook with and want to spray your trees, use a contact insecticide in early May to kill the females before they have laid their eggs and repeat in June – that should do the trick!
Keep the weeding going! Removing weeds when they have just appeared is so much easier – little and often is the key. Deadheading must be done before the seed sets, as this will stop the plant making flower buds. It is very therapeutic to wander round the garden in an evening and snap off the old rose heads – just the thing to unwind after a hectic day!
Enjoy fresh food If you have grown early potatoes they should be ready to lift now. Keep sowing ‘cut and come again’ varieties of lettuce in small batches in old mushroom boxes, etc. They need to be placed out of the hot sun and kept moist but not soaking – perhaps keep them by the kitchen door and snip at them for sandwich fillings and salad bowls. Do the same with peas, as pea shoots are really tasty in a salad and they grow easily in containers.

guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’
Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and 3DXO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.
I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Money Matters with Roger Downes of Andorran
Prepare for change Last month I considered the question of whether or not we’re Better Together, with a swelling tide supporting anti-Europe politics and the Scots about to vote on independence. But there is another change on the way and, unlike the aforementioned issues, this one is going to happen. During the difficult economic times of the last five years, one thing has stood alone as a bedrock for survival at both a corporate and personal level. The coalition parties would tell you that it is their policies that have been the platform and it would be true to say that good financial management by central government in re-balancing the books has made a major positive contribution to our financial wellbeing as a country as a whole. But it’s something that government handed over to the Bank of England a number of years ago that has underpinned our financial stability. I’m talking about interest rates. We have now enjoyed the lowest base rates in the country’s history for the remarkable period of 63 months – our interest rates are among the lowest in the world. That is all about to change as the new Governor of the Bank warns us on an increasingly regular basis. Will it be good or will it be bad? Personally I think the latter, but that will not apply universally. I know that my dad, and others relying on investment and pension income in their retired years, would welcome a better return on their funds. Their days of borrowing are long gone, so they look at it, quite rightly, from a completely different perspective to those of us for whom owing money on mortgages is a way of life. The main message is that there will be change. Interest rates will rise and put pressure on company and household budgets alike. Times of change are always tricky to manage and can be quite stressful, so think ahead. Is there anything that you can do now that will ease the pain when the cost of borrowing increases? Stress test your financial outgoings. Work out how much more your loan or mortgage will cost you if base rate rises by, say, two or three percent.
Burying your head is not an option The Governor of the Bank has promised that any rate rises will be gradual, but they review it every month, so it won’t take long for a series of gradual increases to become a steep hill. If you’re capable of looking ahead and doing something to manage the change, it will be to your benefit in the long run. Burying your head is not an option; change is going to happen.

DRIVERS for a few hours each month We need Drivers with their own vehicle to collect and deliver copies of The Local Answer to our Distributors in your area. Depending on property types, our current team of people average between 100-150 copies/hour (equivalent to £6-£9/hour). You must be 13+ years old, flexible, reliable and sufficiently physically fit to perform the duties.
