Cheltenham Beer Festival Saturday 12th July The current ‘Friends of Cheltenham Samaritans’ group have been raising money for the charity for over 34 years with events as diverse as two large “It’s A Knockout” days at the Prince of Wales Stadium, several Dragon Boat Racing days on Pittville Lake and numerous treasure hunts, pop quizzes and other fun activities. For the last eight years their primary fundraiser has been the ‘Cheltenham Beer Festival’, and each year this magnificent, family friendly event has attracted around a thousand people to the Patesians Sports and Social Club on Everest Road in Leckhampton, Cheltenham. So far these festivals have raised over £75,000 for the charity! This year sees the 9th iteration of the beer festival being held on Saturday 12th July from 12 noon-11pm. There will be over 45 superb real ales available, along with a large selection of ciders and perrys. A Pimms Bar has been a regular feature in recent years, together with a wellreceived BBQ and live music throughout the day in the clubhouse. Only those drinking the real ales and ciders require tickets, but partners and children are welcome to come along as

well. Tickets are available from specialist beer and cider shop, Favourite Beers, on Hewlett Road, Cheltenham. They cost just £8 and the price includes a souvenir glass and programme! One of the key ways in which the organisers raise money at this event is by getting local companies or individuals to sponsor a barrel of beer. For just £50 you will get your name and a logo of your choosing on the barrel as well as getting a mention in the programme. Companies can also buy advertising space in the programme from £50. To help Cheltenham Samaritans through sponsorship or advertising please contact Leigh Norwood on 07595 349059. This is one of the most ‘chilled out’ beer festivals held in the county and is a ‘must’ for any fans of real beer and cider – make it a date for your diary!

Steak, Guinness and Cheese Pie

Delicious Dishes with Helen Kingscott

Why not treat Dad on Father’s Day with this delicious pie? Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil; 3 medium red onions, peeled and chopped; 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped; 2 carrots, peeled and chopped; 2 sticks celery, trimmed and chopped; 4 field mushrooms, peeled and sliced; 1kg of stewing beef, cut into 2cm cubes; a few sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves picked and chopped; sea salt; freshly ground black pepper; 440ml Guinness; 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour; 150g cheddar cheese, grated; 170g ready-made puff pastry (or 500g if you want a top and bottom to your pie); 1 large egg, beaten. Method: 1 You can make the filling the day before if you wish. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. In a large ovenproof pan, heat oil on a low heat. Add the onions and fry gently for about 10 minutes- try not to colour them too much. Turn the heat up, add the garlic, carrots and celery and scatter in the mushrooms. Mix everything together before stirring in the beef, rosemary, a pinch of salt and a level teaspoon of pepper. 2 Fry fast for 3-4 minutes, then pour in the Guinness, stir in the flour and add just enough water to cover. Bring to a simmer, cover the pan with a lid and place in the preheated oven for about 11/2 hours. Remove the pan from the oven and give the stew a stir. Put it back into the oven and continue to cook it for another hour,

or until the meat is very tender and the stew is rich, dark and thick. A perfect pie filling needs to be robust, so if it's still quite liquidy, place the pan on the hob and reduce until the sauce thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in half the cheese, then season carefully and leave to cool slightly. 3 Dust a clean work surface with flour and roll the pastry out evenly with a floured rolling pin to the thickness of a pound coin. Tip the stew into your dish and even it out before sprinkling over the remaining cheese. 4 Place the pastry over the top of the pie dish and crisscross it lightly with a sharp knife. Brush the top with beaten egg, then bake the pie directly on the bottom of the oven for 45 minutes, until the pastry is cooked, puffed and golden. Serve with vegetables of your choice.

Better than willpower alone E-cigarettes are gaining in their widespread appeal with an estimated two million people now choosing them as an effective way to quit smoking. A recent survey found that a fifth of smokers with the aid of e-cigarettes were 60% more likely to quit than those who did not use the devices. Paul Gifford, managing director of Spa Vapes, has witnessed an ever increasing demand for his products and, as a consequence, has invested in premises and staff to help satisfy the growing popularity. Spa Vapes now stock their vast range of equipment and consumables in three shop locations at Lansdown Trading Estate and Albion Street in Cheltenham and, most recently, their newest store in Gloucester’s Westgate Street.

What is an e-cigarette? An electronic cigarette comprises three sections – battery, atomizer and cartridge. The cartridge, many of which are refillable, holds the e-liquid containing nicotine. The battery powers the atomizer to heat the e-liquid and, when air is drawn through, fine vapours are produced for the user to inhale.

Which one do I choose? The devices come in all shapes, sizes, colours and styles to suit ladies and gents alike. Paul and his team will help new customers choose a suitable product and explain the benefits of the device.

Spa Vapes’ Paul Gifford (centre) with Andy Steele (left) and Chris Wilson (right).

Healthier

If you’re fed up of being a social outcast, your clothes smelling of tobacco, or needing to go outside to satisfy your addiction, then why not visit Spa Vapes – and think how you could better enjoy the cash you save!

You will soon notice how much healthier you feel without the tar that is inhaled from cigarettes – apart from the nicotine, vaping does not use the other 4000+ chemicals that cigarettes contain.

Wealthier Once you have your e-cigarette, your only expenditure will be for the E-Juice and, occasionally, a replacement atomizer. The average ‘20 a day’ smoker will only need to spend £5-£7 a week on E-Juice (depending on the flavour and brand) instead of the huge cost for a pack of 20 cigarettes each day.

There is a lot packed into this relatively short walk with plenty of beautiful scenery to capture your attention. Allow extra time to admire the views and to linger in the lovely woodland, some of the beech trees are over 200 years old. A Use the Shortwood car park just off the Haresfield Road. Walk back towards the road and go through the gap in the wall on the right. Take the leftmost of the three paths, signposted ‘Cotswold Way’. Stay on the path until it splits into four. Take the second path on the left and follow it to the road. B Turn left onto the road and at the next road junction turn left. Cross the road to a stile to the left of Stoneridge Farm. Bear left and cross the field heading towards the stile to the right of the two radio masts. C Cross the road and turn right. After a few yards cross a stile and head downhill on the path ignoring crossing paths. Walk down the steep path to the track in the valley (Cotswold Way). D Turn left onto the track and walk through the wood staying on the track until you meet a road. Turn right and head downhill for ¼ mile (400m) to a bridleway on the left signposted to ‘Haresfield Beacon’. E Follow the path uphill at first, past Cromwell’s Stone and on to meet a road. Turn left onto the road and walk 30yds (27m) to a path signposted ‘Cotswold Way’ on the right.

1 This stone is known locally as Cromwell's Stone, erected to commemorate the success of the Parliamentarians in raising the siege of Gloucester in 1643. In July of that year Prince Rupert captured Bristol, leaving Gloucester as an isolated Parliamentarian stronghold in the west of England. King Charles also wanted to open up the River Severn as a supply artery and he surrounded the city on 5th August. It held out for a month, however, until reinforcements arrived under the Earl of Essex – around 15,000 men in all. The King decided it prudent to withdraw and gave the Roundheads one of their few successes in the early part of the Civil War. Why the stone was placed here is not known for certain but, if the trees behind were cleared, there would be an excellent view of Gloucester. F Turn right onto the path, go through two metal gates and up a steep slope. Cross a stile on the left where the path carries straight on to the right of the fence and bear right towards the triangulation point. 2 The site of the hillfort utilized the natural defences of the promontory. The outlook is excellent with steep slopes on three sides and the fourth closed off by a

www.TheLocalAnswer.co.uk

rampart and ditch across the neck of land to the east. It covers about 16 acres (6.5ha) in all and is so well sited that the Romans made use of it in their military campaigns. Numerous Roman artifacts have been uncovered, including a collection of 3000 coins.

3 From the triangulation point at the end of Ring Hill there is a superb view of the escarpment, and probably the best outlook over the Berkeley Vale. Several outliers are visible, including Churchdown, Robin Wood's Hill, and Stinchcombe Hill. In the distance is the Forest of Dean, forming a backdrop to the Severn below, and in good conditions it is possible to see the Severn Bridge.

G Turn sharp left and walk along the ridge keeping the valley to your right. Cross the stile and walk along the narrow path with a fence to your left. Pass through a gate and head down towards the road. H Just before the road turn right down steps and follow the path until it opens out into an open field. Bear half right across the open countryside to the topograph. Turn and head back to the car park.

What’s all the racket about? With the smell of 28,000 freshly picked Kent strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream in the air, and the unmistakable sound of over 50,000 ricochetting tennis balls, Wimbledon is surely here. At 137 years old, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, starting out as a men’s only game with wooden rackets and tickets priced at a shilling each. Women joined in the prestigious games in 1884, and as time went on we started to see a lot more of them. As the floor length dresses began creeping up, one brush of the wind and those brightly coloured pants had officials reaching for the rule book but without avail. However, in 1995 Tim Henman pushed the officials over the edge when angrily smashing a tennis ball inadvertently into the face of an innocent ball girl, crowning him the first disqualified competitor of Wimbledon ever. In 2007, 123 years after women began competing at Wimbledon, the women’s prize money finally equalled that of the men – and their serves aren’t far behind either – Taylor Dent’s fastest serve clocked at 148 mph in 2010 and Venus Williams creeping up with 129 mph in 2008. Maria Sharapova also reached an impressive 105 decibel grunt, the loudest ever to be recorded throughout Wimbledon! But Rufus the hawk hasn’t got his eye on the ball, as he embarks on his daily patrol around the Wimbledon grounds in pursuit of the pigeons out to ‘spoil’ the idyllic settings. So, in the spirt of being British – grab a bowl of strawberries and cream, pop the tennis on and lets hope for another British winner!

Pet health supplements – do they really work? It’s not surprising that for almost every human health supplement there is an animal equivalent. But do they really work? Let’s have a look at some of the more common supplements and consider their benefits. OIL SUPPLEMENTS – These are extremely popular in the pet world – for years owners have been giving their pets some version of cod liver oil or Evening Primrose Oil for its supposed benefit for skin and joints. There is some encouraging evidence that good quality fish oils, high in Omega 3, can have some benefits on skin and joint health. However, they can contain large amounts of Vitamin A which can be harmful if the pet’s diet is already generally high in liver or other sources of Vitamin A. Evening Primrose Oil is popular, but as a plant derivative it has less of the beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids. It can also increase the risk of epileptic seizures or exacerbate bleeding disorders. Bottom line – fish oils high in Omega 3 can be beneficial as part of a balanced diet in certain conditions. PROBIOTICS – There are a large variety of human probiotics available, but it goes without saying that animals all have very different guts and gut bacteria. There are good quality probiotics that are species specific (there’s no point giving a rabbit Yakult!) and they can be quite useful when the normal gut flora has been affected by either a gastrointestinal disease or occasionally antibiotic usage. However, the benefits of probiotics are limited to specific conditions, so there’s no need to supplement an otherwise healthy animal. JOINT SUPPLEMENTS – In recent years there has been an explosion of supplements for joint health. Apart from the fish oils, supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin or collagen have been used with some success in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. Some high quality senior pet foods will even have these added to them. The quality and source of these supplements is highly variable and the benefits generally mild. If you are going to use a joint supplement, use a good quality one that is ethically sourced. MULTIVITAMINS – As in humans there are differing views as to the benefits of vitamin supplements as the main source of vitamins should be from a good quality balanced diet. There are some circumstances where extra vitamin supplements are required such as in Vitamin B12 deficiencies, iron supplementation with anaemias, or calcium supplements in nursing bitches with eclampsia. Most of the time, pets enjoying a high quality diet should be getting all the vitamins and minerals they need. Health supplements appeal to us as a safe, natural treatment for various ailments and conditions. They can have a benefit for specific conditions but are not always appropriate for some animals, and the quality and source of these supplements can be highly variable. Be aware there may be much more effective treatments for advanced or debilitating conditions, so make sure you speak to your vet.

care in a beautiful homely environment A Happy Home Environment for your Child ‘Play’ provides the fundamental foundation on which all future learning is built. Research suggests that playing outside provides further essential benefits for young children. Here at Nursery Rhymes Day Nursery, we create the perfect environment for your little one to develop through play both inside – in the large, light filled playrooms – and outdoors where there is ample space to practise this firm belief that spending time in the fresh air is hugely beneficial. Giving children the time, space and opportunity to play freely and regularly outdoors will enable them to develop to their fullest potential in various ways. Stronger immune systems, better

appetites and elevated self esteem are all confirmation of this approach. Ultimately children’s enjoyment levels are always higher having spent time outdoors and consequently Nursery Rhymes is home to happy, healthy children. Boasting an acre of outdoor space, the grounds are separated into four large areas – the huge lawns for the children to be physical, energetic and exuberant, a ‘Wild Garden’ that encourages children to be inquisitive and explore their surroundings, the ‘Orchard Garden’ full of apple, pear and plum trees, and the front garden providing a small sheltered haven for the youngest to find their feet in the great outdoors. Inside there are plenty of opportunities

to be creative, imaginative and messy as each day children spend time engaged in all types of play under the watchful eyes of the qualified, experienced and well established team of staff. There is a dedicated unit for children aged under two – housing a tranquil quiet room, a cosy play room and a messy room that includes a separate soft play area where the young ones can become confident in their mobility. Home cooked meals are freshly prepared each day by our dedicated cook, fuelling the children with healthy, balanced meals. Parents compliment us on our ‘family feel’ and ‘happy atmosphere’, so why not call to find out for yourselves.

reat taste of summer at Primrose Vale

The ‘Pick Your Own’ season gets well under way in June and Primrose Vale has an abundance of delicious berries, currants and beans for all the family to enjoy collecting – a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. You’ll probably end up doing most of the picking yourself, but tasting fruit and veg fresh from the fields is a delightful and positive experience for everyone. Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO has been developed over the years by owners Charlotte and Paul Keene to become a wonderful source of locally grown or reared produce – keeping food miles to a minimum and supporting nearby farmers simultaneously. There is a large selection of delicious food all year round. There’s also a great variety of crops for you to gather. The most popular fruits with customers at this time of year are strawberries and raspberries prominent towards the end of the month. You don’t have to damage your back in the process of picking them – raspberry bushes are tall and the strawberries are now grown on raised platforms, so there’s no slugs, bugs or mud either! To the side of the shop a recreational area has been created for customers to use during opening hours. Whether you need a sit down or your children want to use the sandpit, ride the vintage tractor, play on the swings and slides or see the rabbits, you are encouraged to use the facilities. In fact, Charlotte and Paul are more than happy for you to take your little ones to use the play area, even if you’re not picking or visiting the shop specifically.

So why not let the kids enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise while you relax with a cuppa and, perhaps, a slice of cake – the outdoor cafe opens from 10am-4pm every day during the summer picking season!

The Local Answer

It’s ‘Chelsea Chop’ time With the Chelsea flower show this month it is the ideal time to do the ‘Chelsea Chop’ which is a way of shortening perennials that can become ‘leggy’. It promotes smaller, later, but increased quantity of flowers. You can try it on lots of plants – i.e. Sedums, Rudbeckias, Echinaceas, Heleniums and Asters. You could also cut back half the stems and leave the other half, thus lengthening the flowering display – have a go, it just takes a bit of confidence. This is a good time to sort out your long term pots in the garden. Re-pot into slightly larger pots (don’t put directly into huge pots from small ones as the plants suffer). Do not use pots that curve inwards at the top for these long term plantings as they are next to impossible to remove the rootball without breaking the vessel. The very big pots are impractical to empty and redo, so with these you can scrape off 10cm or so of soil and top up with fresh soil – something like John Innes No.3. Use slow release plant food pellets to make sure the plant is being fed (refer to the instructions on the packets as to the number needed).

‘Prune early flowering shrubs’ Prune early summer flowering shrubs as soon as flowering has finished – things like Philadelphus (mock orange), Spiraea, Deutzia and Ribes (ornamental currants). Take out one in three of the oldest stems to the ground and reduce the rest by a third. Try and open out the shrub to let the air get to the centre by removing twiggy growth which is growing inwards. After pruning, fork in a couple of handfuls of a balanced fertiliser like Growmore, water well and mulch with some compost to keep the soil moist. These shrubs will repay you with more flowers the following year. Trim the rockery staples – such as alyssum, aubretia and other spreading prostrate plants that have flowered in spring – with shears to keep them from getting untidy. Derby Day is the traditional time of year to give Box a first trim – although obviously it varies from area to area – but by 7th June the risk of frost is unlikely in Britain. Don’t cut it in hot sunshine as the leaves will get scorched.

Garden Sheds, Summerhouses, Home Offices, Garages, Workshops, Site Huts, Stables, Kennels, Aviaries, Pavilions or any large timber buildings!

From humble beginnings 30 years ago, Master Sheds has weathered three recessions and changed beyond all recognition to become one of the county’s leading manufacturers of bespoke sheds. The business was started by Malcolm and Sue Ireson in a small workshop on Innsworth Technology Park in April 1984. Over the years the company expanded and employed more staff including Nick Bailey and Simon Wildsmith (pictured right) who, in April 2010, took over Master Sheds when Malcolm retired. Since 2010 the business has gone from strength to strength, Nick said: “When we took on Master Sheds we were in the middle of the credit crunch and wondered if we would make it work. But we stuck to our principles of excellent workmanship and customer service, and we have ridden out the storm and come out the other side in a much stronger position.” The business, now based in Hempsted, has a great reputation for providing top-quality exterior timber buildings made to the customer’s specifications. Due to their success, Master Sheds have recently employed two new members of staff – one of them an apprentice. As a result, they’ve been able to increase their workload and hope to recruit another apprentice later this year.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year

guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and 3DXO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Local Answer

Better together? It’s going to be a big 12 months in the political world in the UK, from this summer’s European voting to next year’s general election, with a referendum on Scottish independence sandwiched in between. Don’t worry, this is not a political statement, more a musing over the financial implications of splitting up. We all know – whether it is from bitter experience, social contact or reading the newspaper – how costly a divorce can be. It never tends to be amicable either, so the only winners are the lawyers who make a living out of complicating the situation to their hearts’ content. Business split-ups can be messy and costly too, although interestingly there seems to be a better track record of these being completed without some of the animosity attached to a marriage breakdown.

Raging Debate So let’s scale everything up to a national level and wonder what the cost will be of a divorce between Scotland and the rest of the United (or should it now be called Disunited) Kingdom. Would it be just like a large scale divorce or are there other factors in play? Well I can’t see the Scots getting 50% of overall UK assets or a share of the future income streams, but I do know that the lawyers will get even richer if they have to work out who gets what. There’s already a debate raging about whether or not Scotland would be able to be part of the UK monetary system and keep sterling as its currency. Probably not is the answer, as cherry-picking the best bits isn’t usually available to the one who wants to walk away. And what of the continent? Business leaders strongly favour remaining married to the rest of Europe, but there is a significant groundswell amongst the population at large that business leaders are wrong. Are they? I don’t know the answer to that question, but it’s one we need to find a solution to if we are plunged into the messiest, most expensive divorce of them all.

Operational success – but it’s a circle capture It is pleasing to write that we have not had to discuss burglaries for a while, and long may that continue. Our proactive team of officers, under operational name SPA, have had some good successes recently in locking up three prolific burglars and robbers. These sort of people cause real harm to our communities, but we cannot be complacent as the circle of capture, sentencing and release continues with some more prolific thieves coming out over the next few weeks. We have good working relations with our partners in probation and the prison service and we give plenty of notice for when these type of individuals are coming out, and the intelligence they provide usually gives us the heads up about how they have been behaving in prison and whether they prove a risk in the future. This is priceless information in preparation for their release, all with the aim of keeping our communities as safe as possible. But remember to be as sensible as possible in protecting your property and call us if you see anything suspicious.

PRINTER PROBLEMS? WIFI SLOW? WE CAN FIX IT! ~ YES WE CAN! PC SLOW? VIRUS? LOST DATA? The Local Answer

At a recent debate the question being asked was ‘what do the Police deal with the most’. The answer I gave caused a little consternation and debate – that crime was not actually top in our table of demands. For some departments in the Police it would be the only thing they dealt with, for example the CID, but for local Policing we cover so much more. Missing persons and dealing with the vulnerable and unfortunates in our society take up a huge amount of our time. One could argue that the Police should only be dealing with crime but the counter argument would be that who else is best placed to deal with the immediate care of the vulnerable and the missing. If I am being honest, we are not as skilled and versed in using the volunteer and welfare sector as we could be to take some of our burden away, and that is something I am determined to rectify when we get the opportunity in the next few months as we move to a more proactive and targeted neighbourhood policing team. There has been some national debate over crime recording and whether our gathering of figures can be trusted. Well, the recent visit by the Inspectorate shows we have reason to be confident in the integrity of our crime recording processes and that of our staff.
