Welcome to March ... It’s our birthday! The first ever copies of The Local Answer were distributed in March 2009 and our first Gloucester edition was published in August 2012. The style of the magazine has evolved more by chance than design during the last five years so, to mark this milestone occasion, we’ve listened to feedback from readers and advertisers and are extremely proud to present our brand new look for The Local Answer! We hope you like the improvements we’ve made and enjoy tackling our new Quick Crossword and Sudoku puzzles. We’ll keep adding new features of interest when we can. The whole team at the office, pictured here on the left, have been involved in making the magazine the largest, monthly distributed local guide across both Cheltenham and Gloucester. Delicious Dishes with Helen Kingscott
Very easy, very tasty and very reasonable to make! Save fuel by making it while something else is cooking in your oven, or double up the ingredients and freeze half for an easy meal another day. Ingredients: 1 butternut squash approx 1.5kg; 2 large onions; 4 medium vine tomatoes; 1 medium-hot red chilli 57cm long; 4 tbsp olive oil; sea salt; 900ml chicken or vegetable stock. Optional garnishes: Sour cream; chopped corriander. Method: 1 Pre-heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas 7. 2 Peel the squash and cut into chunks, discarding the seeds. 3 Peel, halve and slice the onions. Halve the tomatoes. 4 Arrange the squash, onion and tomatoes in two large roasting trays in a single layer, adding the whole chilli to one. 5 Drizzle 2 tbsp olive oil over each trayful and season with salt. 6 Roast for 55 minutes, stirring halfway through.
7 Discard any very dark looking onion strands. Split open the chilli and scrape out and discard the seeds. 8 In a blender, whizz the chilli with all the vegetables and the stock, in batches, until smooth – or put all the ingredients into a saucepan and use a hand blender. 9 Gently reheat the soup. Serve if wished with a spoonful of sour cream and chopped corriander.

When it’s time to say goodbye It’s a sad reality of being a pet owner that despite all the joy and pleasure we get from having a furry member of the family, eventually there comes a time to let them go. As a veterinarian it is a regular part of my job and one which I have had to come to terms with over the years. Failing health comes in as many forms for our pets as it does for us humans. Cancer is probably still the biggest nasty that forces the issue but heart disease, organ failure, or just old age are all common reasons for us to have to make the painful decision. I have often said to pet owners at least we can spare them the final unpleasantness of terminal cancer or insufferable pain and I feel that at least this final act can be one of kindness and release. For pet owners though, as much as we know that we are sparing them much discomfort, it’s a heart-wrenching decision to make – and many will feel a sense of guilt that is entirely unjustified. I talk to owners about ‘quality of life’ and try to help establish whether we have come to a point that a pet is either too debilitated or unhappy to continue. However, given that many animals can be incredibly stoic and continue to eat and interact in the face of considerable ill-health, making these decisions is sometimes extremely difficult.
Peaceful, quick and painless When the decision has been taken the actual process of euthanasia is usually very peaceful, quick and painless. I usually place a catheter into a vein to allow administration of the anaesthetic, often alleviating the need to have anyone holding the pet other than the owners should they wish to be there at the end. A sedative can be given if a pet is particularly anxious or stressed by this process. Finally we administer a concentrated overdose of injectable anaesthetic – the animal falls asleep instantly then quickly passes away in a matter of seconds. I’ve performed the procedure far too many times and it always leaves me with mixed emotions. Last year I said goodbye to one of my own pets, Marley the cat – a stray that ended up at the clinic and worked his way into my heart. He lived an over-indulged life with me and the years were very kind to him. Sadly, as with many cats, his kidneys failed and the end came quickly. Like many pet owners I wrestled with making the decision, but once I could see that the spark had left him I knew it was time to let him go. Some pet owners put on a brave face, some can't bear to be there at the end – I felt I needed to do the deed personally and shed more than a few tears in the process. Sometimes a grieving pet owner will say to me that they can't face ever having another pet but it's only because they bring so much happiness and enrich our lives so much that we feel their loss so acutely. I honestly believe that owning a pet is both a joy and a privilege – one which hopefully gives us many years of immense pleasure. Along with that is the responsibility to look after our little friends and make sure they have as happy a life and gentle a passing as we can give them.

Having smoked for 40 years – apart from brief respite when attempting to give up – I decided to try vaping and visited eBuzzCigs. Review by Mel Jones When you hear names like Blazing Fiddles and Blowzabella, you’d be forgiven for not being able to easily identify the musical genre, but after last month’s annual Cheltenham Folk Festival at Cheltenham Town Hall, you’d be surprised to find out how well known these groups are locally and further afield. This year Cheltenham celebrated its 18th Cheltenham Folk Festival, which saw the town literally overtaken during Valentine’s weekend with festival goers, morris dancers and a whole host of folk musicians including a number of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees.
Electrifying and mesmerising Take Bella Hardy, who headlined the festivals Final Concert on Sunday night with Carthy, Hardy, Farrell and Young, called The Fiddle Girls. Whilst Eliza Carthy is the Festival Patron and has been nominated for one of the greatest musical accolades, the Mercury Prize, and is already a multiple Radio 2 Folk Award winner. The concert was electrifying and mesmerising, with an audience of both young festival goers, those new to folk – who I sense similar to me, may well have been prompted by the likes of Mumford & Sons – and traditional folk fans, many wearing festival sweatshirts from the 1st one, back in 1997! I was lucky enough to meet one half of multiinstrumentalist duo, Greg Russell and Ciaran Aigar, who between them play no less than 6 instruments, plus vocals. I was struck by their youth and was interested to hear that they had both grown up in musical families, and are about to release their second album, having already played a successful national tour – whilst juggling their studies!
Versatility of Cheltenham’s Town Hall The concerts were interspersed with live open sessions – musicians literally turning up, tuning up and playing together. It’s amazing how versatile Cheltenham’s historic landmark Town Hall is – the Drawing Room transformed into a session space, complete with Real Ale Bar, and music drifting along it’s corridors which were filled with a busy market selling everything from quirky vintage jewellery to music and even accordions. A short walk over to The Playhouse and there was every kind of musical workshop you could imagine from ukulele’s to harps. My personal favourite was a workshop simply called Cotswold Jigs. Always keen to try something new, this didn’t disappoint, with an introduction to dancing a solo jig. Luckily I had flat shoes and a sense of fun, spending a happy hour as a novice dancer. I quickly grew in confidence, although I don’t think I will be joining a morris dance group anytime soon – even if many of us Cheltonians associate our annual folk festival with their colourful displays in the centre of town each year! Since 1982, Over Farm Market has sold a wide selection of fresh locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables, more recently adding pickles and preserves, local wines, beers and ciders to their range. There is now a bakery, delicatessen and butchery. Even their Christmas trees are home grown! As the years have gone by, Over Farm has diversified massively in order to keep the business alive and well. Their “Frightmare” Halloween festival is now the largest in the Southwest, attracting around 15,000 visitors throughout the month of October. “Barn on the Farm” music festival started in 2010 and is now a weekend home for almost 1,500 people during July. Sponsored walk date moved WIN TICKETS! Gloucester Rugby, in conjunction with their delivery partners for The Road to 2015 Sponsored Walk, took the decision last month to move the walk planned for 9th February to the weekend of 3rd May. The difficult decision was driven by recommendations around the safety aspects of the event due to poor weather conditions. The good news is that the walk now coincides with the weekend of Gloucester's final home game of the season against London Irish.
Event will benefit from match day atmosphere The route is a 3 mile loop, starting and finishing at Kingsholm and taking in sights of Gloucester, including the Cathedral, Docks and the rugby posts in the park. The walk will be finished in time for the match day atmosphere to add a new dimension to the event. Everyone can get involved, raise money and then cheer on the team for the final time this season at Kingsholm. 1 Snowshill Manor is a popular National Trust property and, in architectural terms, is a good example of a typical 15th to 16th century manor house. The terraced gardens were laid out in 1919 on the basic design of a cottage garden. The house once belonged to Charles Paget Wade (1919 – 1951), an enigmatic and eccentric architect and antiquary. He acquired not only a West Indian estate but also a very varied collection of items to fill his house – including bicycles, toys, clocks, Japanese armour, farming implements, and musical instruments. He donated these to the National Trust and they are on show inside the house.

Sitting in a sheltered hollow high up in the Cotswold Hills above Broadway and the Vale of Evesham is the lovely village of Snowshill. Most of the unspoilt and picturesque village is built from the locally quarried honeycoloured Cotswold limestone with the picturesque cottages clustered around the sloping green. When it’s time to call the experts Our garden was in desperate need of some maintenance, including felling a tree which was causing a wall to fall over. The boundary of hawthorn, holly and other small trees had got out of hand and – after trying to keep it as ‘cut back’ as I could with my loppers – I knew it was time to get the experts in! I called Mark Clifford, and he couldn’t have been more helpful. He explained that, for any tree work, he links up with Oakey Tree Care – specialists in their field – to ensure everything is done properly. Following a couple of ‘site visits’, I was delighted to open my curtains early on the morning they were due to start and see they were already up the tree! Mark, Adam Oakey and his colleague Ben Durston worked extremely hard in difficult conditions but, eventually, had to ‘throw the towel in’ due to the lashing rain and high winds making things too dangerous. Although not quite finished yet due to the inclement weather and the inevitable disruptions they have encountered, we can already see how much better our new outlook will be. The view from my kitchen window is fantastic – I can now see the hills and trees over the road, and I even spotted a buzzard sitting there. Some of the disruptions – quite rightly –

Funnily enough, one such person was a friend of mine who called me to ask if I knew of anyone who could help her – a tree had blown down in her garden and she needed two others removed quickly before there was an accident. I gave Adam her number and, that evening, she rang to say they had been round and it was all sorted (ahead of mine!). As they haven’t finished cutting the hedge or remaining trees back yet, we couldn’t
publish an “after” photo. I am assured and, judging by the great attitude they’ve displayed, have total confidence the job will be completed to a very high standard and they’ll clear up everything after them! It was great to hear that Mark works in conjunction with other specialists who advertise in The Local Answer too – including our columnist Julia Smith for her garden design skills. It is reassuring – and quite apt during the month of the racing festival – to deal with someone who understands that to get the best results, it’s a case of ‘horses for courses’.

Grow at least one thing to eat this year! Gosh have we been going five years already? Where has the time gone? I thought I would look at 2009 quickly and see what was hot in the world of plants and gardens then. Well, hot plants were the black varieties which featured very strongly at the Chelsea flower show of that year – things like Black Bamboo, and the Iris ‘Black Knight’. Talk was of global warming and the lack of rainfall of the future (that’s a laugh for a start) and how the Mediterranean plants are the way forward (I still think the people of the Somerset levels would be better off with rice growing!) Well let’s get back to the present ... even if you have never tried before, do grow at least one thing for eating this year. Things for beginners to grow would be runner beans, courgettes, cherry tomatoes, and ‘cut and come again’ lettuces. Don’t plant a whole packet of seed (you can share a packet amongst a couple of interested friends). The cherry tomatoes need starting off inside in a warm place towards the end of the month. Varieties like Tumbler can be grown in baskets and pots and need no special training so are pretty fool proof. The lettuce can be sown in small short rows every couple of weeks so you get a succession of plants to pick over. No one needs 10 courgette plants unless they are running a restaurant – two or three are ample and really one is just fine if space is limited. The runner beans can be made into a wigwam of canes and five or six plants are enough for this – sow two beans per pot and nip off the weaker one to ensure good germination. I know that I nag but do keep on top of the weeding – they will start to shoot up now and it will make it so much easier later on if you get on top of it. Things like dandelions need to have the whole root removed or they will regrow, so if they are in awkward places they are best squirted with a systemic weedkiller such as ‘Resolva’ or ‘Roundup’.

Will the bubble burst? After several years in the doldrums, the housing market has been picking up steadily over the last 12 months or more. At first it was thought that this improvement was restricted to London and the South-East, but actually it’s happening to some degree nationwide. It doesn’t, of course, solve all of our property-related ills. The construction industry employs 300,000 less people than it did six years ago and first time buyers continue to struggle to get on the housing ladder despite the government’s Help to Buy scheme being extended to more properties in 2013.
Does anyone know? It’s been good for those trying to sell property, with the number of jobs in real estate rising rapidly year on year – many of them operating in the rental market. But the questions that everyone is asking are will it last and could it have a damaging effect on household budgets? I don’t have those answers, and I’m not sure anyone else does either. One of the biggest worries is the possibility that the Bank of England will feel obliged to dampen the rise in house prices by increasing interest rates. We have all got used to them being at their record low levels and it would not take much of an increase for our monthly payments on mortgages to become a challenge. And yet, if the bubble bursts, maybe the impact on the general economic recovery will cause even greater damage.

As they say, every cloud has a silver lining, but the only silver lining I can see in this ’orrible weather is that crime tends to go down when its raining. PC Rain they call it. I suppose the reservoirs will finally be full too, so there’s another bonus. But seriously, one’s heart goes out to all the people affected by the inclemency in our changing weather and one wishes them a better March. Talking of March. The Festival is nearly upon us and our plans are finalised – we hope for another fantastic week of racing and merriment with no dramas. We will all be working with not much time off or leave allowed and as many staff as we can muster will be doing one of three main thing – working up at the course, working day shifts in and around the town centre to ensure a smooth operation, and then working the night shift to ensure that people behave themselves and enjoy their Cheltenham week. We will have the police horses out again to support us, extra taxi marshals, the ‘999’ hub outside M&S in the High Street from 10am till 2am, and plenty of uniforms keeping the peace. I will personally be starting at 4pm and working right through till the town’s quiet at 4 or 5am – so rest assured that I will be trying to keep matters on an even keel. Tuesday 11th February was ‘Safer Internet Day’ (SID) with Cheltenham Police playing their part. SID aims to educate and inform the public on how to use the internet safely and make them aware of some of the dangers. Officers from the Safer Community Team visited schools and colleges, and in the town centre they handed out leaflets and engaged with the public. Sgt Ellson was tweeting SID messages regularly throughout the day – increasing awareness through social media being a key part of getting the message out there, particularly for many young people as this is often the only source of news and information they receive. Cheltenham Police now have a new twitter account – @CheltPolice – so please follow us! Anyway, try and keep dry and have a good race week and don’t get too grumpy at the traffic or the organised chaos around Cheltenham. Keep ’em locked!
